Jamel, I started to learn to play guitar about two years ago at the age of 52. There is no better time to learn than when you realize that you want to play. "If not now, when?" was the question that I asked my self back then. I have no illusion that I will ever get "good" at it. I practice about 30 minutes a day give or take. It gives my mind a break, and I almost always feel better afterwards. I've found the best thing about it is that it has given me a much greater appreciation for people like Roy Clark. It is even more impressive now I know what they are actually doing on the instrument. Plus, once you can play a few songs, your wife and family can sing while you play. What better quality time is there than enjoying music with the family? That's how is was done before records and radio.
If not now, when? Is always the right question to ask. I've played quite a while, but I ask myself that every time I go to learn something new. Also, as long as you're good enough to enjoy it, you're good.
Back in the 70s, I got to see Roy in concert and he played this song. It knocked the crowd out of their seats! It was a performance that I will never EVER forget! Simply amazing!
Roy Clark, Buck Owens, Marty Robbins are all great classic western music artists. Old Hee Haw sketches are dated but hilarious. Lesser known Marty Robbin’s songs are Big Iron, Faleena (*El Paso pt 2 - the before story)
I was lucky that my Dad took me to Wichita, Ks. to see Roy play at a concert and he played Malaguena ( Mal-uh-gwayn-yuh pretty close phonetically to how it was pronounced ). I watched most of the Hee Haw shows too and Roy and Buck Owens always put on a good duet or three each show. He was a true master that picked up where Chet Atkins left off. May they both RIP, they are missed.
A novelty song of his that I'm sure would love is Thank God and Greyhound. He sings in this one. More songs of his are Tips of My Fingers and Right or Left at Oak Street.
He also sings. He also played on the tv show Hee Haw. Guitar player the best. He can play the crap out of a banjo too , he played it a lot on Hee Haw. But there's not an instrument he can't play. Check out Hee Haw, the show had special guest each week like Dolly Parton,, Johnny Cash,, Loretta Lynn,,& many more.
Jamel , so glad to see you covering Roy Clark he truly was multi talented artist in almost every instrument weather it had strings, sticks ,keys, wind, you name it and could sing and was a comedian too !
You nailed it with “technique”. His technique is unbelievable but in addition to that his right hand technique is unbeatable. Those explosive continuous strokes were so powerful. Top ten guitarist.
I remember playing this in high school marching band, but an arrangement that wasn't even CLOSE to this level of technicality. I'm glad you came across this... I've never heard it and Roy was amazing!
Watched him in Branson, play this on an Ovation 12 string. I quit trying to play guitar after that. I wasn't worthy. Roy Clark was above the guitar Gods, and nobody will ever come close to the ability and talent Roy had in his pinky finger, let alone the other nine.
Roy Clark is one of the most underrated guitarists ever. He never got the respect he deserved as a musician because he was kind of goofy and made a lot of jokes. Plus, he did goofy shows like Hee-Haw and stuff. So a lot of people didn't realize just how good he was. But he was one of the best. He was also a kind and humble man. No one who knew him ever had a bad word to say about him.
When I was in high school, I belonged to a club that provided ushers for a venue that normally hosted classical concerts and we always got to stay and watch the concerts for free. As luck would have it, that was where Roy Clark chose to perform. I pretty much spent the whole time with my jaw on the floor. The man was amazing, and this is the song he played that impressed me the most.
Thanks, Jamel - don't look at the video... Roy Clark was amazing... he always had this "ole country boy aw shucks" attitude.. very humorous and humble.. but this man was a MASTER of not only guitar, but banjo and other stringed instruments! This is incredible... right?
I would also add Glenn Campbell's rendition of the william tell overture to list of amazing guitar performances. That one and this one are two of the time.
At some point you should check out the guitarist Andrés Segovia. He gave his first public performance in 1909, and his last in the 1980s. He influenced many generations of guitarists and was almost solely responsible for guitar to become accepted as a serious instrument for classical music.
Master class guitarist..one of a kind..check out this version with his acoustic when he was on the Odd Couple show.. even harder on acoustic but he nails it
Because he was a comedic tv actor on a silly vaudeville-type show, even the best of musicians underestimated him... until he would bust out performances like this and leave people speechless. Roy was a shredder before the word was ever used to define guitar players. Pure world-class talent and performer.
I would argue that Roy had all the respect he deserved, from his peers of professional performers. He just didn't seek the spotlight for himself. Throughout his career, he liked to seek out special talents among youth. He would then present them on stage, and take on the roll of "second fiddle".
@@darrinlindsey I agree to a point. If you ever see Neil Young in interviews, all he ever talks about are those that helped him and influenced his well-known career in a generous and kind way. Roy was the same way, yet his career and talent is not remembered for the leading talent that he was. We know who he was, but most people have no clue these days. I think that affects his legacy and potential influence on modern players and performers. He needs more mainstream recognition. In reality, Roy surpasses many lesser-talented and better-known musicians.
@@JoeGator23 Yes, but he didn't seek that fame while he was alive, so it's not a travesty that he doesn't have it in death. Yes, I've often said that it's a shame that he didn't do more to become the "star" that we know him as. But, it was only himself that put that barrier up, not anyone else. Many will say that his work on Hee Haw held him back. But, it was that that made him happiest. That's all it takes to be successful in life.

Roy Clark has always been one of my favorites. He does tend to leave one speechless, but I really like your comments! You’re a good man!
He did an acoustic version on a TV show called "the odd couple" and it is absolutely incredible
Check Roy Clark and Johnny Cash Folsom Prison Blues
Back in the 70s, I got to see Roy in concert and he played this song. It knocked the crowd out of their seats! It was a performance that I will never EVER forget! Simply amazing!
Roy Clark, Buck Owens, Marty Robbins are all great classic western music artists. Old Hee Haw sketches are dated but hilarious. Lesser known Marty Robbin’s songs are Big Iron, Faleena (*El Paso pt 2 - the before story)
One of the most underrated and overlooked entertainers of all time. Do a deep dive on some Roy Clark!!
Watch Jose Feliciano version of Malagueña. He's also at Daryls House!
I started learning guitar almost 4 years ago at 50.
I'm having so much fun with it, even though I'm not much beyond a mid level beginner.
One of the great instrumentalists. You really should watch "12th Street Rag" by Roy Clark wonderful early work I'm sure you'd enjoy.
A novelty song of his that I'm sure would love is Thank God and Greyhound. He sings in this one. More songs of his are Tips of My Fingers and Right or Left at Oak Street.
Something similar is Misirlou by Dick Dale. It’s used for the opening credits of Pulp Fiction.
He blew it up...worldwide
He was one of my favorites and a very talented man with a sense of humor. A rare combination
A great artist. He could play just about anything!
The guitarists Virtuoso. He was so great at so many instruments, banjo, bas on and on.
He was the greatest, guitarist. He could play any instrument. Actually, he could make any instrument talk🤗
This is gorgeous, but I love his rendition of Malaguena on an acoustic guitar!
Jerry Reid is another old country guy who plays amazing. Jim Stafford, too. Just have to look beyond their hits.
I got to see both of these men as well as Roy Clark in Branson, MO. Wonderful performances!
There are no words to describe that music from him. He was a total Master of the strings. 👏❤
So happy to see this one on here, Thank you for including it! Roy is awesome. I recommend you check out Charo playing Malagueña, she is an amazing guitarist too!
This is a flamenco dance music and very beautiful to watch!
Thanks for paying homage to Roy and his guitar virtuosity.
One of my faves is THE THRILL IS GONE - Roy Clark with the wonderful Candi Staton.
When I was a kid, the only version of this song that was well known was by Liberace on the piano. In the early 70s, Roy appeared on the tv show The Odd Couple and did a shorter version of this. That brought the live audience to its feet.
You should listen to Charo performing the same music. She's among the greatest flamenco guitarists in the world.
Incredible - thank you for showing this!!
Pure talent, Thank you Roy. R I P.
This was when musicians played actual music.
God given talent. Roy was a great musician.
This is a traditional spanish song.
I'ts my first time hearing Roy Clark and he's amazing.
I suggest you all to look for the Sabicas's performance of this song. In my opinion the best one because of his technic playing the guitar.
