I have a friend whose parents had a country band and were on Hee Haw a couple of times. They said Roy was so friendly and welcoming to the acts that came on their show. I loved to hear his music and still like to hear it. I really miss him a lot.
Later in life, I had a close friend who was a bit of a music snob, having been classically trained on the piano. He looked down on country music until one day when Roy was performing live on TV and broke a string. Without breaking rhythm, Roy changed key and played around the broken string. That day on, my friend told me he took Roy to be a serious musician.
Here's a piece that has an Australian guitarist start a song playing a 5-string guitar (the A-string is broken), rather than take ten seconds to swap to his second guitar. ruclips.net/video/j01Ho74qRx0/видео.html
When I was 17(1981) I took my gf to the county fair to see Roy Clark, she thought I lost my mind both being metal heads, after picking her jaw up off the floor she realized I was quite sane. Roy Clark’s talent and ability defies description, you have to experience it.
I think Johnny Cash said it best when introducing Roy on his TV show, "When he talks, he makes you laugh, and and then, when he plays, he makes you listen, 'cause he's one of the best, Mr. Roy Clark!"
My great-uncle was a railroad depot clerk and a multi-instrumentalist on guitar, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer (which he used to make), autoharp, squeezebox (concertina), jaw harp, harmonica and fiddle. He learnt it all playing with the family, his grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles, cousins just letting it rip for fun. I feel sure Roy probably learnt the same way when he was young. At any rate, Uncle Willard would whack you if you dared to make noise while Roy was playing anything on the TV or radio. He said that he had never heard anyone have so much music inside him just waiting to pour out. He's been gone since 1984, but every time I hear Roy Clark I can see the rapt look on Uncle Willard's face as he listened.
These guys are smoking. When I try to tell some of the younger ones, they kinda giggle. I tell them to try and copy it, seriously. Well, they play a different tune after that. I have to admit after seeing Jeff Beck, I'm a Strat guy ever since. When I saw Glen playing a Sunburst Strat on the PBS Special, it warmed my heart. They may be gone from this earth, but they live in our hearts.
There's a serious reason why there aren't lots of instructionals on any platform covering Roy's guitar masterpieces. This is the true definition of ORIGINALITY.
With Roy Clark comedic skills it's easy to overlook how good he was at playing his instruments especially on his guitars. As you mention Roy was an all-around entertainer and actor. Many have said Roy was a one man show. 🎸🪕🎻🎤
If Roy's playing doesn't bring a smile to your face, then nothing will. This dude was at a whole other level. To play at that level of expertise, and still clown around at the same time is astounding. He was a multi instrumentalist and a megatalent. RIP Roy and thank you for the great musical legacy you left us with.
Most guitarists would be thinking, “Oh, I hope I don’t make a mistake during this TV show!” Roy was probably thinking about what he’d order for dinner that evening… What a crazy amount of talent In one musician!!!
On my first visit to the famous Texas honky tonk "Billy Bob's" I saw him and everyone left stunned at his mastery and versatility. Like many, I only knew him from limited TV viewing, and like everyone there our heads were spinning upon really experiencing him. And the biggest smile in the history of show business. Like someone you'd feel was your best and closest friend.
Love Roy Clark's talent & his humor. He made it look so easy but what he did was actually very difficult. He was able to play his instruments with a really fast tempo. Roy Clark was a great entertainer, humble man & super talented. He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary. A lot of musicians & artists today could learn a lot from his style & technique. Glen Campbell & Jerry Reed were also underrated guitarists. But these men paved the way for a lot of musicians today.
Roy Clark had so much fun when he played that his technical skills were under appreciated it seemed here in the U.S. He had some great duets too over the years on HeeHaw.
When I was growing up, Hee Haw was very popular…I loved Roy Clark because it would be a break from the ho hum skits…I knew even as a child I was watching greatness..
"The Lightning Fingers of Roy Clark" was the first I heard of Roy when my dad bought the album. In that time frame, I saw him perform in person at the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport, Louisiana.
My dad and I had the best time ever at the 1964 Del Mar Fair when we saw Roy Clark, (while my mom and sister were off at the exhibits) and we just smiled from ear to ear for the rest of the day! He played guitar and banjo and clowned around and won our hearts!! 💜🎶✨
Many years ago I had the pleasure to hear Roy Clark in a small dinner theatre. I can’t tell you how amazing he was. I will never forget that evening. What an honor. Roy didn’t just play music he felt it, Roy was the music
A truly one of a kind performer. If Roy was just a singer, he would have had a nice career. If he were just a guitar player, he would have been a huge star. Add in his comedy and all the other instruments (banjo, fiddle, mandolin, etc.) and he is LEGENDARY!
I have no doubt Roy practiced millions of hours to get to play like this, but TBH I also think he's got that "born with it" talent that just takes it to the next level(s). I really like the analysis. I'm not a guitarist so it gave me a whole new appreciation of how incredible this performance really is.
Incredible. I can't make my fingers move this fast even if I'm not trying to hit certain strings and play an actual song. And the thing is, he made it look so effortless. RIP, Roy. There will never be anyone to fill your shoes.
A fantastic one here Fil! I've lived Roy Clark's guitar playing since I discovered a couple of his albums in my parents record collection and than seeing him on "Hee Haw". It was a Wonderful era of great country guitarists who were much more technically advanced than 3 chord country music.
Roy Clark was very talented along with Glen Campbell. The accuracy and technique of his guitar playing is incredible. This performance does make you smile from ear to ear! Great analysis Fil!
Incredible entertainer, on all levels! Glen once said Roy and he had an agreement-- Glen stayed away from Malaguena if Roy stayed away from Wm. Tell Overture!

Thanks Fil.. great analysis, as always. I grew up watching Roy, and many of the other country greats, most of whom have now left us. A gift for sure.. but I’m quite sure there were hours and hours and hours of practice involved, in order for it to ‘appear’ effortless.
While I'm still thinking about it (the video isn't over), you are 'spot' on! Roy is a master PERIOD!!! But your point was that he makes it look difficult (which it is) and easy, at the same time. Also, as you noted, he is producing 3 dimensions of showmanship, not to overlook supreme mastery, all at the same time. Easy, difficult, and entertaining. NOBODY didn't love Roy Clark. Thank you Fil. What a treat! I grew up listening to Roy Clark on TV and Radio, but never heard this before. Wow! Roy's talent and performance is incredible, but then he always puts in those facial expressions and body language that makes so fun and funny.
Good analysis of Roy Clark. Just finished watching your live stream from yesterday. Missed it due to poor connections. Loved your red lights love the color red. It’s very strong positive and strength and good luck. To bad that you didn’t keep them up. 🎃🧛♀️🎸
Fil, I saw Roy and his band perform in the '80s. Tremendous musician and comedian. His band was first rate as well. He didn't mind letting his band do some comedy as well. The bass player did a little funny bit too. Fun show.
He seems so incredibly comfortable with the entire fretboard and his picking hand as well, that it seems like he's just teasing the audience... I think he actually has to pretend it is difficult and he's trying hard! I don't know what makes me smile more, Roy being so incredibly happy, or Fil being so incredibly happy! How can I watch this video and not be forced to be incredibly happy as well??? GLORIOUS!!!
FAntastic analysis and demo, Fil. Many thanks. Every time I see Roy I am amazed and can;t help but think of the hours of practice to get the muscle memory and make what is very difficult look so easy while being fast but accurate
Impossible to watch him without smiling. So much talent and such a fun, sweet man. There will never be another Roy Clark.
I was in awe and smiling the entire time!
He was a fun, sweet man.......
On stage, off stage... not so much.
I have a friend whose parents had a country band and were on Hee Haw a couple of times. They said Roy was so friendly and welcoming to the acts that came on their show. I loved to hear his music and still like to hear it. I really miss him a lot.
Tulsa native here. I could see the roof of Roy's house from my backyard. Loved being so close to a legend.
Mom was from Wagoner and my Dad, Claremore…they married in Tulsa!!!

I think Johnny Cash said it best when introducing Roy on his TV show, "When he talks, he makes you laugh, and and then, when he plays, he makes you listen, 'cause he's one of the best, Mr. Roy Clark!"

How can I watch this video and not be forced to be incredibly happy as well??? GLORIOUS!!!
Very well stated!
Roy Clark and Glen campbell are my favorite musicians thanks Fil for showing this video of roy he was a talented person on many instruments
His fingers move so fast- I can’t see them moving. 😂 so fabulous
FAntastic analysis and demo, Fil. Many thanks. Every time I see Roy I am amazed and can;t help but think of the hours of practice to get the muscle memory and make what is very difficult look so easy while being fast but accurate
