Later in life, I had a close friend who was a bit of a music snob, having been classically trained on the piano. He looked down on country music until one day when Roy was performing live on TV and broke a string. Without breaking rhythm, Roy changed key and played around the broken string. That day on, my friend told me he took Roy to be a serious musician.

To play at that level of expertise, and still clown around at the same time is astounding. He was a multi instrumentalist and a megatalent. Love Roy Clark's talent & his humor. He made it look so easy but what he did was actually very difficult. He was able to play his instruments with a really fast tempo. Roy Clark was a great entertainer, humble man & super talented. He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary. A lot of musicians & artists today could learn a lot from his style & technique. Glen Campbell & Jerry Reed were also underrated guitarists. But these men paved the way for a lot of musicians today.

These guys are smoking. When I try to tell some of the younger ones, they kinda giggle. I tell them to try and copy it, seriously. Well, they play a different tune after that. I have to admit after seeing Jeff Beck, I'm a Strat guy ever since. When I saw Glen playing a Sunburst Strat on the PBS Special, it warmed my heart. They may be gone from this earth, but they live in our hearts.

My great-uncle was a railroad depot clerk and a multi-instrumentalist on guitar, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer (which he used to make), autoharp, squeezebox (concertina), jaw harp, harmonica and fiddle. He learnt it all playing with the family, his grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles, cousins just letting it rip for fun. I feel sure Roy probably learnt the same way when he was young. At any rate, Uncle Willard would whack you if you dared to make noise while Roy was playing anything on the TV or radio. He said that he had never heard anyone have so much music inside him just waiting to pour out. He's been gone since 1984, but every time I hear Roy Clark I can see the rapt look on Uncle Willard's face as he listened.

The great Roy Clark. A truly amazing talent, and so humble. A true musician.

What I really appreciate about you Fil is the fact that you acknowledge the talents and skills of past and present artists in just about all genres of music. You, being an accomplished artist can really break down and dissect everything that is involved, makes for a great reaction. Roy Clark was a very gifted musician. Thank you for your wisdom and for sharing it with us.

“30 frames per second film is not enough to capture all the technique” - that about says it. Incredible guitarist!

I do like classic country music very much. Roy Clark is amazing. The humour he showcases here adds to the brilliance of his guitar playing. Thanks for sharing this analysis video. Cheers, Fil! ✌️

    It is an instructional video.
An accomplished guitarist, in his own right, is educating us on just what level roy was on almost 60 years ago.

He has a sporting right hand. Great spring effect as well. Keep in mind it is live and direct into a tube amp with no effects. A virtuoso.

You're a brave man, Fil, taking this on. You did well, considering you're trying to imitate the inimitable. Lol. The thing that made Roy so beloved is that he obviously took the music very seriously, but he didn't take himself seriously at all.

While I was growing up we had maybe five albums to our name. Hank Williams, the too fat polka, and Roy Clark. My dad played violin, accordion, harmonica, piano, guitar, and banjo. It seems if it had strings he could play it and all by ear. Even without a little finger that he lost her in World War II he still played today. This brings back a lot of memories of watching he haw while he was slowly leaving us from emphysema. They brought a lot of joy to his later years. I was 16 when he died so it’s extremely important for me to remember some of those childhood memories.
