Are Infrared Converted Cameras Worth It?

  • I bought an infrared converted camera. A Fuji XE-1 with a 720nm IR filter in place over the sensor. I wanted to head out and have a play with some infrared photography, I'll admit the conditions for this weren't ideal, but for a bit of fun it kind of worked. Not my best images I will admit.

    I used a converted Olympus Pen-F to Full Spectrum Infrared. This conversion gives me the option of using it as a normal colour camera with a Hot Mirror filter, or any other IR or UV wavelength with the use of a filter. With your video title, I was expecting a bit more of a "Was it worth it?" comments, but didn't really pick up any. LOL. For me, I like the effect from IR. I recently got an IR Chrome filter from Kolari Vision, This effect I really do like, plus it doesn't need any colour swapping. Right out of the camera with Auto White Balance the image is set. The Pen-F isn't my first IR converted camera, I started with a Canon S120 point and shoot converted, this had hot spots on the centre of the lens at high F-stops, which was disappointing. Then I converted a Canon M2 into IR Full Spectrum. This was great to be able to use it as a normal camera as well. Filters can get annoying when you have several lenses, but I've started to just use a 17mm F1.8 on the IR camera only. I do have a couple of Clip-in filters that go over the sensor. These are great when you never need to change wavelength in a shoot. But I am the sort of guy who will take a 590nm image, then a 720nm, etc, just to see the difference between each wavelength, which means I need to change filters each time, and the clip-in versions run the risk of dust getting onto the sensor when changing. So, I now just cope with the on-lens filters, and keep the same lens on most of the time.
    I really enjoy IR, but you are correct, you need a nice bright sunny day. They say the best times for photography is sunrise and sunset, but with IR, you can fill in the rest of the day with more photography. LOL. Not that I keep to that advice, I am often taking images on my normal cameras in the bright midday sun, especially when I am travelling on holiday.

      Originally I was going to pick up a full spectrum XT-3 but the need for filters put me off a little. I honestly regret my decision at this point. I’m going to pick this IR stuff up again in the summer and its definitely a different approach. I think winter is just the wrong time for it.

      @@ChrisBaitson Summer is the better time for IR. Although, of course, it can be done any time of the year. Just takes a bit more thought. I would prefer not using filters, but they do give more options with a Full Spectrum. Look forward to seeing you progress with it.

    Interesting Video. I have a Converted Fujifilm XT 20 and use it with Fuji lens and have no problems with autofocus. I find at +2/3 exposure works best and gives a lot of leeway to process.

      That could be my adaptor then? I’ll try adding some exposure next time and see how I get on. Everything seems to over expose if I don’t use the exposure comp. Not used the camera too much though.

    Let's start by saying that infrared is not for people who want to take selfies in terms of photographic expectations. In the other hand it's great for people who have or like to shoot with tools that give us a chance to experiment with other than pure perception. Learning to interpret your tools as part of an experimental or creative process is not about just capturing moments. Shooting pictures of not visual energy is different than taking pictures of our own visible spectrum.

    Not sure how you’re struggling with the settings on the XE1. You’ve got a shutter dial and you can set your aperture on the lens. Don’t even need to suss out the menus.

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  Год назад

      The Canon lens has no aperture control on the lens.

    • @Station9.75
      @Station9.75 Год назад +1

      That’s more the fault of canon then. Fuji literally couldn’t make it easier to to physically change your settings externally.
      Maybe try a vintage lens with an aperture ring. Really fast and easy to focus with focus peaking.

    I've been considering a converted camera body. I work in a museum and I've seen photos done with infrared and it brings out pigments that are faded to the naked eye. But I'm not sure which conversion to go with. Standard infrared? Full spectrum? Black and white infrared? I'd also want to use it for landscapes.
    I was doing the screw on filter thing, but I didn't like how foliage would be blurry do to wind/breeze.

    Not used a designated/converted camera yet myself, but tempted to get one of my point and shoots done,
    You may find that on a clear day the Low winter sun provides the type of lighting that helps?
    Keep on expanding your experiments,
    Even if you don't get the image/s you are hoping for you still get to learn something new,
    Have a good winter 👍

    I have a D7000 converted to 830Nm which I bought last year for less than normal D7000 and I like it. Obviously best effects are achieved in summer , but even on winter sunny day you can photograph/make video. Best when used sparingly in photo or video portfolio to make it more diverse and interesting.

    I really enjoy Infrared photography and have done for a few years have three converted bodies two infrared a 665nm conversion a lumix G5 a 850nm lumix GX85 and a full spectrum Olympus EM10 mark 3. I only use native lenses so no issues with focus. Shot all year around both landscapes and cityscape yes the IR effects are stronger on bright sunny days but you can get shots all year around.

    And fuji lenses got an aperture wheel on them, so it is rather comfortable to use camera without a mode wheel.

    I've been using a full spectrum X-E1 for about 8 years now and the auto focus has always been an issue, even with Fuji lenses. It will produce some really lovely infrared images, but part of photography is using a camera that you enjoy picking up and that feels natural to use. When it's struggling to autofocus it removes the joy from shoots and I've given up on so many images because of it.
    Before you invest in some of Fuji's outstanding glass, I would suggest having a good think about selling the X-E1 and maybe getting a converted or converting a Canon instead.

    A warning to photographers needing conversions (to infra-red, astro, etc.) or camera repair: Stay away from Spencer’s Camera in Utah, which bills itself as doing work for NASA; they have photographers recommending them on YT videos and so on. The are outright crooks; no other way to put it.
    Back in February I sent them two Canon T6s, both for sensor cleaning, one for conversion to Infra-red. I made it clear I needed it done quickly as I am on the road in my RV, etc. They said no problem, about $375. Okay.
    It took more than 6 weeks, with no answer on their phone (filled up voice mail). They finally returned my emails saying everyone was ‘at a workshop’ in Canada. Aggravating.
    The eventual package was so poorly wrapped that one T6 was sticking out of a ragged hole. There was no invoice or receipt or even an indication of which T6 was converted, which was merely cleaned. I went online to my bank to see that they ‘rounded up’ to $400.00 on my cc. No invoice indeed. Would have been iffy to round up. But the real reason was only one camera was actually worked on, the conversion. I assume they didn’t want to put a lie on paper since both cameras still had filthy sensors and are useless.
    I wanted to have it on record, so I used email to complain. My two emails went unanswered. This is a well-known company (NASA, etc) but they obviously do not care (in the extreme) about us peons. I have posted the first photos out of my cameras on my blog if you want to see what they… didn’t do and over-charged me for it after being 4 weeks late. I’m a well thought-of writer (3 books, many TV/feature scripts) named Allan Weisbecker; I have worked professionally as a photographer (including covers) for magazines like Smithsonian, Men’s Journal, Popular Photography, and so on. Google me and do a search for my blog if you want to verify what I’m saying (and see the dirty sensor pics). ‘Allan C Weisbecker + blog’. Look for the title ‘Spencer’s Cameras Are Crooks’.
