  • I converted my Fuji X-T3 to Infrared for black and white landscape photography. In this video I take the camera out in to the field and test it. The resulting images are incredible, especially the last few. I'd love to know your thoughts on infrared photography, so let me know in the comments below. I used Protech Photographic for my conversion. I went for a 720nm filter at the cost of £260, which took about 3 weeks. For 10% off your first purchase visit www.squarespace.com/heaton

    Hi Thomas, I was really excited to see that you've finally converted one of your older Fuji cameras to IR. I did the same thing years ago with my XT-1, then my XT-2 when I bought the XT-3, etc. It was fun to see your enthusiasm and joy in this video as you started using your newly converted camera. I for one love shooting IR this time of year and agreed with everything you said in the video. I'd love to see more IR videos from you and see if I can pick up any cool new ideas for my photography as you get out and explore with it. I'm curious about the photos you shared in this video. Were they the straight out of camera JPGs from using the black and white film simulation, or did you go back to the raw files and process them in lightroom / photoshop? Thanks and please keep sharing your IR work!

      @@ThomasHeatonPhoto You should film water with IR camera, the reflection looks so good because the waters emit little IR and look really black. Also for those who can't afford a camera for conversion, there is a IR filter that goes over the lens. The camera sensor's original filter gets rid of most IR but some will pass through. You just have to work at higher ISOs with a normal camera and a black IR filter

    • @MacM545
      @MacM545 Год назад +1

      @@yuxuanhuang3523 Yes, for many camera models, a non-converted camera can work. but, there have also been many models which are extremely insensitive to Infrared. For example, with a Canon 500d and the standard kit lens, in the best lighting, you might still need something like 30 seconds of exposure. With Fuji X-T2, which is actually thought to be a rather sensitive stock camera, the exposure also needs to be quite long. Interestingly, older cameras are better at it, but I've been able to get results using my modestly new Samsung phone!

    • @yetanotherbassdude
      @yetanotherbassdude Год назад

      @@SteveMillerhuntingforfood it depends. Some IR conversions just extend the sensor's sensitivity into the infrared by removing the camera's internal filter that would cut it out, but others will also include a new filter over the sensor that's like an R72 and will cut out a lot of visible light to emphasise the IR. Given that he said that in colour the images from his camera were just purple and weird, I have a feeling that Thomas may have gone for the latter. Even so, given that it was an old camera and he has both an XT-4 and the GFX as his main digital shooters, it's still a pretty awesome alternative use for what would otherwise just get stuck on MPB.

I have found that incorporating water and/or buildings into the images gives another dimension, as they reflect IR differently (or in the case of water, not at all), rather than getting an overload of whiteness. If you sometimes consider converting another camera, i would recommend converting it to full spectrum instead, as you get a lot more flexibility from it. With a full spectrum i put a filter in front and can then go 720nm as here, around 600nm for color infrared, 850nm or higher for more intense black and white shots and you can even get a filter to use it for regular visible light.

      @@elusivelens1744 Most DSLR cameras have an IR blocking filter right in front of the sensor. Conversion involves removing the filter and replacing it by one which blocks some or most of the visible light spectrum. 720 is the middle filter, and probably the most commonly used. The conversion means the camera won't take regular colour pics afterwards - so its best to commit a spare camera for conversion. This means carrying two bodies when you go out !! One thing to watch is that not all lenses are good for IR, some lenses exhibit a "hotspot" or area of low contrast in the middle of the image. The hotspot can vary depending on the scene,, I've never read a good explanation of what causes the hotspot.

    Really great images, Thomas! I had an X-T20 converted last year for B&W IR, and it is really fun pursuing this kind of photography, as you said, in the summer especially. A caveat or two: Not all lenses do well for IR. Stopping down past 5.6 or so, might create "hot spots" in your images. It does so with my camera, even using prime lenses. A great source to check your lenses and anything else about IR photography, especially for Fuji, is Rob Shea's YT channel.

    Tom, well I for one really enjoyed today’s video and as someone who has a few older Fuji X series cameras kicking around it made me think about perhaps also getting one of them converted. Really liked some of the images a lot, and as for future videos I think you should maybe take it with you on other shoots to give you a back up option for taking shots where the light doesn’t suit what you’d normally go for (supplementing other videos rather than having lots of dedicated infrared videos). Personally though I’d love to see you explore and show what other, less typical subject matter also looks good in infrared to broaden everyone’s understanding of what looks good this way. By the way, you never mentioned but does the conversion mean the autofocus still works the same, or do you need to adjust for infrared (like in the old days)?

    Just FYI, Tom. 720nm (nanometers) is the frequency of light in the near-infrared spectrum that this sensor is now sensitive to. Its called 'near-infrared' because 720nm is at the very extreme red end of the visible light spectrum which--under average conditions--runs from about 380nm to 750nm. There really is no hard limit, but human vision falls off rapidly above 700nm.
    720nm is also sort of the traditional spectrum of IR film from ancient times, so it gives a familiar look.

      @@elusivelens1744 Yes, though it looks like camera conversion might need a lot less light than a filter. That's what I've just read, so don't take my word as your answer. I would hesitate to limit my camera to IR when I could just use a filter. Filters look expensive and might be more tedious to use?

    • @jman6194
      @jman6194 Год назад +1

      @@elusivelens1744 yes, it is achievable with a filter, but it depends on the camera body. Some have very strong infra red blocking filters on the sensor, so do not do well with a filter only. Canon is one such brand that have strong blocking filters. Olympus, by contrast, perform very well with filters. I can't speak of other brands, as I have not tried them personally.

    Hi Thomas!
    I also had an "infrared phase" a few years ago and enjoyed the outerworldly looks very much.
    Perhaps we should mention, that it's quite easy to create good simulations of ir-photographs by photoshop or affinity. Not everyone owns an unused second camera and the money to let it convert. 😉

    • @ConstantinSPurcea
      @ConstantinSPurcea Год назад +4

      I'd like to disagree with the simulation bit. Yes you can reduce the luminosity of the blue in the sky and increase that of greens then turn everything black and white but it will never have the same effect as an infrared photo. It's not colours that reflect infrared, it's particular materials. Without knowing how each material reflects infrared it'd be hard to simulate it. I took a photo of my friend wearing a white tshirt and blue jeans and in camera both looked just as white. His skin looked quite dark and his eyes looked very dark.

      I must say it's easier than one could expect: in Italy I found at least two professional labs that have no problems in doing these conersions tasks (for sure, not to be tried at one's home!). Shipping to and from the lab is part of the standard procedure. Last year, I paid 210 € for the conversion work (perfectly executed). Also, I think it's also very common to have a semi-obsolete digital camera at home, still working fine but less performing than a more modern camera. This was my case: my first digital mirrorless (a Lumix GH1) was lying in a drawer, overtaken by a state-of-the-art Olympus E-M5 MkII), and the IR conversion took it to a new life!

    Tom, a few tips, use a polariser filter, it helps push the sky blacker. Also I find the silver Efex pro photoshop plug in from NIK(i think its NIK..) really helps in post to enhance the B&W aspect. You also need a lot of direct sunlight for IR photography, an overcast day isn't going to help the contrast. And the great thing with a converted camera is you can hand hold if needed, no long exposures like in the old days. There is a list somewhere on the net that shows all the fuji lens that dont suffer from a hotspot as some do.
    Ive got some images on flikr using a converted xpro 1 & 2, just search my name and you will find them.
    Have fun!
