Over on Clutterbug she said something that really resonated for me and explains why I find your decluttering videos so motivating. I have a tendency towards not doing something until I can do it perfectly. Seeing stages in between mess and done helps me get moving. And the couple videos where you talk about it taking a couple different times of working on a closet before it’s really functioning well have been really helpful as well.
Oh absolutely! It always gets WORSE before it gets better. When I first started doing this I was getting so many comments about not knowing what I was doing because it was looking worse or ppl telling me to stop ruining homes and I realized... they probably feel that way because TV shows don't always show that realistic, messy in between stages but they are ALWAYS there and IT DOES GET BETTER, but you have to trust the process. So I love that these episdoes can share the messiness with you and inspire you to just start and keep going even when you doubt that it will get better! IT will!
@@SpaceMakerMethod Just get it Done Quilts has an annual declutter month and she stresses that decluttering is different and before organizing. No point in buying bins for stuff you're getting rid of anyway. You gotta pull it all out so you can see the reality of how much you have
Overwhelming process, but making progress. Half the battle is decision of what to part with. Selling, donating & keeping. April is the one you want/need in your corner. What a huge relief to your mom. It's like emerging from a fog. Pandemic & life changes energy level. Looking forward to part 3. Such a good daughter. Take care...
I love how you’ve helped both of the moms in your life. That’s such an act of love and respect! It would be fun to see the rooms with their new paint colours. Could someone send you little video clips after the fact?
Oh I got you! Jackson will actually fly in towards the end of the 1.5 weeks I'm there and help me tackle the painting real quick because I just can't leave the dark colors for them... I know it will be such a dramatic change for them.... but when we did start the series we were intending just to declutter, and then the more I was there and working in their space the more I realized just how much the dark colors were effecting me which then made me realize that the painting of those rooms was equally as important as the declutter.... so I maybe only slept 4 hours a night while I was there... but I will make sure we get to the painting 🤪 and thank god that Jackson was able to fly in or it would never have gotten done! Can't wait to share!
@@SpaceMakerMethod It sounds like you made a Herculean effort! I sure couldn’t do all of that work for days on end with four hours of sleep per night. I’m so happy for them and I’m really looking forward to each episode of this series. I love how you use what is already there and personalize the space to suit the homeowner.
I am LOVING this series. Your Mom deserves a nice space to live in. I am SO glad my Mom decluttered long before she had to go into independent living. She was able to enjoy her home for many years after everyone was grown & gone.
Usually extreme declutter videos really do not deal with extreme clutter, so artificial. This, this is overwhelming, but your spirit got to me and did a lot of decluttering myself last winter. Love from Turkey
Another great video on decluttering and how to work in a small space. I like how you stopped and donated a lot of items and got rid of the boxes. It takes time to declutter and you make that point in the video. Thank you for your expert advice.
It's good you're helping your mom; a room like that can be so overwhelming, hard to know how to begin. Having the help makes it an easy process and feel better about making decisions to let items go. She'll feel more relaxed when it's done and gain a dedicated sewing "mom" room! Nicely done!
I bet it's so motivating for your mom to see some progress! Thank you, again, for this series..I started decluttering my own "depression room" yesterday & managed to fill 8 medium-large boxes with things to donate. I still have more to go through today and will schedule a donation pick up once I'm done since there will be so much! Can't wait to have all that out of my house; I imagine it will be very freeing!
This makes me so happy to hear and I'm going to send it to my mom. It's not easy to share your space with the world, especially when it's not in it's best state, but I knew that other "depression rooms" are out there and that showing this would be inspiring to others. April you are doing a fabulous job and it's obvious that you are being sensitive to all her emotions. Also, I love that you were wearing the ankle weights while decluttering!
Oh! The next episode just when I need a bit on motivating, too. I'm glad Mama April has you to help with her depression room, aptly named. I've watched the young people on their tictoks cleaning their depression rooms - and it's great that people are allowing others to see the reality of their lives - whether that be a young person not coping well with the pandemic or Mama April facing first the loss of family members then the last two years of full-on not being able to take a deep breath work in the health care field. Thank you Mama April for sharing your space and allowing us to share your journey to where you would like to be and also thank you for the much needed surge of motivation I got from this video.
Love your mom's voice. Sounds like a mummy's should sound. Calm, soft, loved, cared... Your videos relaxed me. In combination with her lovely whispers I really come down.
Very relatable. Trying to part with things that have memories attached is such a struggle, especially when grief is involved. What a gift you are giving her.
Best tip with lots of boxes to break down and no space in recycling: is to use the biggest empty box and break down the other boxes and put them in that bigger box, so you get rid of all those boxes and only have one to worry about when putting out the recycling :)
Wow! Your Mum must appreciate your help! My kids have helped a lot too. A Christmas time my boys took a huge amount to donate, filled a trailer. It really lightens your load. Thank your Mum for the work she does as a health worker. Looking forward to seeing the design stage.

Wow, childhood memory unlocked: I had the 101 Dalmatians cards! They're also packed away at my parents house along with other random dalmation things I collected. I'm so excited to be reminded of these. I'll have to find them one day.
I have a similar fold down shelf unit, it has been in every room of my house ,held so many different items over the years.storage, display I have told the family when I move into a nursing home it is going with me.😄 Collecting like items enables you to decide what to declutter.

April, my husband asked how many times is this lady gonna declutter the same house and I said honey, I watch the same episodes over and over!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I cracked up laughing! I just had to tell you. I hope you get a good laugh out of it too 😂
Great start and looking forward to seeing more progress in the depression room. Like someone else had mentioned, it would be nice to see a clip of the room after the paint color changes.
I was thinking about all the pillows and quilts that take up so much room. How bout getting some of those plastic storage bags that you can use a vacuum to pull the air out of them and squish everything. Not sure if your Mom has room under any of her beds, but if so, she could store them under there. I have used these before and they work great!
Great idea! I will show it in the other episodes, but that closet we cleared out will be able to store all of them easily but there are so many scattered throughout the house that I will share that in other episodes, but we did get one of those storage boxes that we actually found in another closet unused on a later date, so it was great to wait because we saved money! I forgot what episode is in... I think closer to the end! But I love storing stuff under the bed in small spaces! It makes such a differnce!

I remember helping my mother do decluttering (before I even knew this word) and it was time consuming but rewarding. Unfortunately there was another area that never got done before she died. We ended up hiring a junk removal company to finish. Note: my mother was a hoarder.
I'm sure that was really challenging for both parties and time consuming. I hope that she was able to feel lighter in her freed up space wihle she could💛
Yay! It's been a year of trying to find a style that I like and that doesn't cause more stress during these already stressful projects and I think I've finally found a balance that works! So glad you like it too! 💛
the pillows!! 😄😆🙃 Good job you two!! really good job. looking forward to the updates and watching your library. ahui hou, new subscriber on the Big Island of Hawaii - former 'organizing assistant' current old lady minimizing .... carry on
My mom was a true hoarder. She had over 200 boxes of smelly papers all over the place. Then there were the piles and piles of junk. Whenever we tried to toss things, she'd cry. Over the years, we tossed rotten vegetables, broken glass, rusted bed springs and nails, and rags with mildew. Then some of her beloved papers. Tina, Al's wife
I don't think it's weird to bring things in during this process. I think it's imperative to have an idea of what you want of your space if you can. It's how you always help your clients - you ask them what they envision their perfect space to be then you reiterate what they want though out your process - keeping that vision of calm or creativity or efficiency firmly in the front of your work. Also, for Mama April, whenever I've decluttered huge amounts of my own things in the past - years of build up - I've experienced a physical response. There was the joy and the relief and the deep breath of wonder at having my space back - yes. However, I also found I'd actually get cold-like symptoms on the day or days after - which it odd I know - but there you go. At first I thought it was just exhaustion from the process - but then it happened again and again - and I allowed that I was being physically affected by the removal and opening up of a space. So be gentle with yourself Mama April and perhaps book in a pampering weekend, whatever that looks like for you, once the process is done.
Don't discount the dust that is bound to have been stirred up from all that stuff that had been sitting for a while. Even if you don't have allergies, it's bound to affect the respiratory system. I'd expect a lot of people would have stuffy noses after a big job like that.
That was a big job and could have been an emotional struggle because of the sentimental issues, but you two kept it moving. Way to go!!!! It is great to have the patience to wait to recycle the empty boxes! Think I would have been tempted to take the empty boxes outside and make a fire. Know that isn't the most environmentally friendly, but it is a one and done situation. Huge progress! Bet the donation centers love seeing you coming! Hope you take a couple quilts with you to Denmark. There will definitely be cold winters there and you can be wrapped in Mom's love. Maybe Mom can make a list of northern relatives and give some away. I'm sure they'd be greatly appreciated! Can't wait to see the next episode. Love that Mom is holding on to the pup, deaf and blind or not. The love is the same.
Oh that pup is obsessed with my mom and was NOT happy that I was there taking hte attention off him. Poor guy just wants to be loved and held 24/7. Actually, I want to talk more on going through things with that angle of being more attached to things emotionally. I'm still learning that balance, especially with family, because you have to be professional to get the job done in the right time, but also have to be nurturinng and I know that with this short time span I wasn't able to take enough time to be sentimental because I was worried about wrapping up everything before I had to leave. I'm still learning, and will share some of these thought s with you guys down the road in this series so that you can learn from my mistakes.💛
@@SpaceMakerMethod Sometimes pulling the bandaid off quickly actually is the kindest way to take it off. It may have seemed you could have been more empathic, but that might not have been the most loving thing to help your mom deal with the situation. She seems to be enthusiastic to have her space back and more motivated to declutter with each phase.
I’m looking forward to seeing how this is styled. I would say my style is natural minimal MCM coastal lol but I like what I like. I have been admiring the moody japanie style of your new /old place too. But my husband would loose it if I changed lanes rn. 😂 hahaha 🤍✌🏼
haha it's so hard to balance styles when you're working with 2 ppl who both have opinions 🤣 - oh man, i've really gotten into the dark and moody. love it!
have you considered taping the open sides of a big box and breaking down the smaller ones and putting them into that box? I say this because of the space your working in. I know how overwhelming it can be when its not your things. I love the tip on not getting rid of storage and shelving as you may want to use it later. Have you also considered that your streamlining your life and organization skills have come from moving around ? As our society in the U.S. is more about material wants not needs. Personally I have moved many, many times and I make conscience choices with everything I bring into my apt. Much Love.
Oh absolutely. Moving so frequently really helps you to asses your needs and wants and what you really want to keep with you in your home. And we did do something similar to your box idea and just moved them into the living room, but i never thought about taping down the flaps but wish I would have. Nothing annoys me more than when you're working in a small space and you trip or get stabbed by the open flaps of the box. Its the worst!
Parents need to realize they need to start decluttering now and not leave it for their children when they pass. I don’t want to seam morbid but it’s reality.
So exhausting! But you made some progress. Getting that carload of donations out must’ve been such a relief. I totally get it about the pillows - how do you get rid of them? Especially ones that are just *sort of* used/gross - too used to donate, too new to trash. I had a stack that I had turned into throw pillows. But I recently found a textile recycler that pays a local school by the pound for soft furnishings and fabrics. They were happy to take them, I hope they’ll get recycled not trashed, but the school benefits regardless.
Unfortunately where they are in Texas is super behind on recycling, it's really unfortunate. Someone said donating them to a animal shelter would work. In other episodes we save all of the good ones and put them in the guest room, but the really old ones that had discolored unfortunately went in the trash I would love to find a better way to repurpose them but I know some states and cities/countries will be more advanced than others.
Sorry..I SAVE the boxes in a storage area for "products"...in case you want to sell them in the original box and/or for moving purposes. Just fold the box down,, you can always retape them for usage.
Overwhelming! You're able to provide not only a more impartial view, but also for her to find out what items you want to keep (like the cards). FYI: The volume was all over the place, and I kept having to turn it up and down.
I found out recently that plastic toys that were made before 2005 may not be donated safely, since they may be made with chemicals that are harmful to children. It will be so sad when I get around to sort out the plastic toys that really shouldn't be played with by other children
P.S. I'm sure you have already broke them down, but if you have someone in your area that does Operation Christmas Child, they can use those shoeboxes!

I'm sure that was really challenging for both parties and time consuming. I hope that she was able to feel lighter in her freed up space wihle she could💛
Enjoying the blog style!
Yay! It's been a year of trying to find a style that I like and that doesn't cause more stress during these already stressful projects and I think I've finally found a balance that works! So glad you like it too! 💛
@@SpaceMakerMethod 🥰
the pillows!! 😄😆🙃 Good job you two!! really good job. looking forward to the updates and watching your library. ahui hou, new subscriber on the Big Island of Hawaii - former 'organizing assistant' current old lady minimizing .... carry on
I love those Lego. I would play with them in my slp sessions all the time.
Same here! Had so many memories of playingg with them as a kid! Did you have the knight set too!?
Omg I went to Angelo state, didn’t expect to see that mug!
You did??!!?! Small world!
GIRL😱
That is insane!!! I have to help my mom declutter to pretty soon. N seeing you this way,I'm not looking forward to mine😩
My mom was a true hoarder. She had over 200 boxes of smelly papers all over the place. Then there were the piles and piles of junk. Whenever we tried to toss
things, she'd cry. Over the years, we tossed rotten vegetables, broken glass, rusted bed springs and nails, and rags with mildew. Then some of her beloved
papers.
My son would absolutely love those legos if you didn’t donate them! Those ones are all sooooo cool!
Oh those are for sure staying in the family! We stashed them under the bed until my brother can pick them up!
@@SpaceMakerMethod very awesome & a good call ;)
When you asked the cat if they liked scent bird it seriously sounded like he said yeah lmfao
Love salt and vinegar chips too 😁
The best!
Love your channel. Boo Hobby Lobby.
Haha ya, some don't like it but it's the only thing they've got there 🤣 small town.
I like the how you say Stuff as Shhhstuff, lol.
I need to forever call it just that 🤪
I ❤ the TX quilts!! Please let your Mother know if she ever decides to part with them to sell them to me.😉😅
Oh she's definitely keeping them! And she's planning to finally finish them once we get her sewing room cleared out!
I’m looking forward to seeing how this is styled. I would say my style is natural minimal MCM coastal lol but I like what I like. I have been admiring the moody japanie style of your new /old place too. But my husband would loose it if I changed lanes rn. 😂 hahaha 🤍✌🏼
haha it's so hard to balance styles when you're working with 2 ppl who both have opinions 🤣 - oh man, i've really gotten into the dark and moody. love it!
I wish my mom would let me help her do the same thing!!
Eating an elephant one bite at a time. A huge elephant.
A very big elephant that you sometimes need a break from 😜
have you considered taping the open sides of a big box and breaking down the smaller ones and putting them into that box?
There's a saying, two moves is as good as a fire.
Um yeah Lego castle was my favorite.
Would a neighbour be willing to take the empty boxes for recycle
Parents need to realize they need to start decluttering now and not leave it for their children when they pass. I don’t want to seam morbid but it’s reality.
It is something to think about. My parents just told me to have an estate sale 🤣
Legos 2:50
We still do!
Donate them to animal shelters or foster places, they use it as dog/puppy beds !
👍
Hey, our 'depression' room is called the 'dead people' room! Lol.
P.S. I'm sure you have already broke them down, but if you have someone in your area that does Operation Christmas Child, they can use those shoeboxes!
legos are worth a lot of money
Oh those are def staying in the family!
Old Lego lately for some reason are collectible especially the little figures worth money.
I hope that you’re aware of the value of those legos now? They are expensive to purchase new.
Just found it funny….. as we all have loads of allergies….. cats and most dog breeds for sure…. asthma too…. You don’t have trouble with a cat?…
Haha. So you declutter but then go buy items to reclutter. 😹😹
