It was more like "I intended for you to be a weapon of war, so I cannot fault for committing war crimes. And your path was altered by the Chaos Gods, turning you into a monster, so I cannot fault you for going over the edge." It's quite the tragic notion, actually. For all his flaws, Big-E DID care about his sons, even the likes of Perturabo, Mortarion and Konrad. He wanted Magnus to have a chance to fix his mistake. He hesitated in killing Horus until the very end. The only he went out of his way to really punish was Lorgar, who wouldn't accept the Imperial Truth despite preaching that the Emperor was absolute. Not sure WHY he screwed Angron over so much, though. XP
no man... The emperor wasn't cool with that. He tried to tell Konrad that his insanity wasn't his fault nor the Emperor. It was Konrad's environment and Nostramo as a whole to blame. If Guilliman fell in Nostramo instead of Macragge, Guilliman would grew as a twisted person too.
What's particularly interesting about the illusion is that it shows one of two things. Either, though he won't admit it, Konrad has a higher opinion of the Emperor than he deserves, believing that the Emperor actually does love his sons, or, Konrad really does understand how boundless the Emperor's lies are, and that even in this moment, after everything that's happened, the Emperor still won't tell him the truth. Remember, this is all more than likely just in Konrad's head.
I love the ambiguity of this scene. No way to tell if this is the emperor talking to him, or merely his own insanity delivering him an auditory hallucination to torture him.
I can't really be sure but it seems to me this is shortly after the Emperor was interred on the golden throne. If it genuinely was him that'd make Konrad one of the few people he spoke to after his ascension.
*If* it was really him, it shows that he did care about his sons in his own way. One last message of forgiveness to his son, and telling him that nothing ever really dies - an attempt to ease his son’s fear. Quite sad really.
If I remember correctly this is shortly before Konrads death so my best guess is around 50 years after the emperor was interred on the throne. As it took the night lords row decades to build their fortress on Tsaguelsa and Konrad spent the last “few decades” of his life there.
Finally! I like to see the emperor has he is, a father. I dont like how for many the emperor is just another bad guy. He is a father for the primarch and for the space marine. He is not necessarily a good father. But he is still à father and in his way he do love his sons.

I lowkey wanted Konrad to come back as a redeemed Primarch, but the Night Haunter reborn as an Undivided Chaos Prince. His two personalities finally free of eachother.
Personally love Konrad as a character, but it’s because of the fact I love him as a character I do not want him to return. His death was intentional, he could have avoided it, could have fought it, and chose not to. I personally think he was done living, he’d proven his point, had no further interest in either the imperium or chaos, and chose his death which is more than most get.
I like to think this was a genuine last attempt by the Emperor to reach out to his son, I think the Emperor, somewhere deep within, loved his children, but due to his responsibility and the issues he was facing, as well as his experience as an immortal over 40 thousand years old, forming close, meaningful connections was borderline impossible for him. I don't doubt that the Emperor saw his sons as tools, but he also, undeniably saw himself as a tool, a tool to be used in the protection, preservation, and ultimate advancement of humanity. In my view he more or less destroyed his own humanity, to save mankind, and to build it a utopia, which I see as another reason he was so cold to his sons.
He knew the evil that his father is, and stood up against him, during the Horus Heresy. Oh, yes, Empiefail IS a Kaos lord, alright. And Conrad figured it out.

Think of all the "coincidences", like leaving Horus just before they would enter the Warp, allowing him to become corrupted. Or withholding the information of Demons, which affected the whole of mankind AND his sons. Or that Empiefail went to the 4 Chaos Daemon Lords: Tzeentch, Slaanesh, Korn and Nurgle, to help him create these abominations called Primarchs: Why would they EVER help him, if it did not serve THEM in the end, if these Primarchs would be made for GOOD? Look how humanity "exists" (which they hardly even do that, really) in bleakness, terror and insanity? Is that the works of a benign being? Precisely.
The emperor doesnt care for morality, he just wants his empire and his space highway. That's why he never batted an eye when konrad, angron, or mortarion went wild.
