Hi I'm just about to start my product design course at university and I'm a bit nervous, what do you think are the key skills to learn that would help and benefit me the most throughout my time studying this course for me to become a successful designer in the future? thank you and great video by the way, it's really inspiring and paints a clearer view of what the true meaning of what product design is!
Great post, thanks :)

Hey, great vid! I literally can't figure out how you still have time to edit, thanks for the content, I still find it hard to find how much business one should do or know, would you share some resources on that so to actually be able to call myself a PD instead of UX? I do have the soft skills, strategic mindset and such,Thanks again!
Hey Lucrecia! Sometimes I wonder the same thing! 🤣 I'm overworked forsure. And more videos on product design coming soon. So thanks for supporting & subscribing! 🙌
Great video...
Hey Andres, I am a digital designer based in India. I love your videos, I would like to know your business updates. Best of luck man.
More videos coming soon!
So question: can i pursue product designing if im a total noob in editing or just computers in general? I've never had a computer or a laptop in my life nor do i know how to use one, aside from the basic functions. The only editing i do is cropping my Instagram pictures. So is it my time to think of another career or can i just try to learn laptop...things?
Perfect
Ur perfect
Now that's called a COOL and USEFUL video 👍 improvement point - content wise I would add more details and examples how does the product designer collaborate with product manager, dev team and product marketing
Great point!! Feedback appreciated!
Well put it simply it's how someone experiences your product end to end with instructions. Because we are really algorithmic in nature. We are addicted to a sense of direction while in reality we don't have any. What we do have is freedom
I used to not like UX product designer to refer to themselves as a product developers cause, in my world products are physical goods(which encompasses engineering, art and manufacturing). But tech was come so far that apps are seen not only a service but a product aswell. As a hardware product developer we definitely share some common objectives and methodologies.

Josh! I really appreciate your comment! Super excited to be connecting with my people! Hahaha God bless you my man
Design mean solving problems short easy and Clear .
Thank you Quba! I appreciate the support 🙏
Thx for all this intel.
Now a note on the industry : all this terms of visual designer and UX/UE , product designer are BS. Before everything was just design (for objects), architect (for houses), fashion for fashion, and graphic for graphic. But all were thinking about the user experience. Graphic designers never were just pixel pushers. The industry is jsut for whatever reason making 3/5 different jobs out of one.
Makes no sense and also put bounderies for each who's called this and not that. You're a designer or you're not (the thinking goes with it). Period.
Quality Video
Thank you!
So i’ve been doing some courses to become a graphic designer but i would like to change to product design. My problem is, i don’t want all my effort and time put into graphic design to go to waste. Does product design involve any sort of graphic design?
Graphic design principles like visual hierarchy & typography always help when you're designing an interface in product design. It's not a wasted skill! But you'll need to level up in other areas like user research, business acumen, product strategy, etc... as well!
Good day Andres, I just discovered your channel by looking up about graphics design and UX/UI design. Please I will love to learn and have a class about UX design, do you organise one or is the a good UX learning platform you can direct me to?.
Good day Kelechi! I know there are some great skillshare classes by Maddy Beard! Might be worth checking out.
Cool''''
Just here to stand up for all the 'Product Designers' who had their job title stolen by UX and UI designers.
Nothing more infuriating than getting your Masters Degree in Product Design to have the term changed a decade later. 'Product Design' nowadays is so laser focused on app/digital design instead of physical product design that everyone who studied Product Design any further back than 5-10 years ago has been forced to call themselves 'Industrial Designers'.
Design is the organisation of stuff to perform a function.
🤣 true
Hey man. My Name is Yax Francisco, i'm from the UK and just found your channel. I think it's great and love what you're doing. I'm sure we'll be working together soon. Would be nice to talk some time soon. Love broski
Hey Yax! Nice to meet you and thank you for your kind words! Would be happy to connect
Cool! Love your content ^^
Thank you! 🙏
so very well explained, but better product design of the video would be for me: background music less loud to understand better...
I appreciate the feedback!!
I have a question. Can i do a bachelors program of graphic design and then an masters in product design?
Not sure what your objective is but I've never seen a master's degree in digital product design. Not even Google designers have them. The field is too new. You can get a master's in visual arts, communications, or multi-media... To be a really good UX designer, you need to master multiple disciplines. Psychology, marketing, tech, visual communication, research, and creative thinking. I'd even add business, economics, and cultural studies to really draw the full picture. To master design means you're able to map out the marketplace for your industry and manipulate the variables options just so to achieve the desired outcome your client had as a goal. And present those options in a captivating visual system that allows people to abstractly interact with those options structured by the business. A master's degree is merely a prep for a PhD. To see if you really want to dedicate your life to research. There is a lot of research being done in interaction design and HCI, but not specifically on app development or digital design space. The industry has forced research to be focused ads and engagement manipulation... But I doubt anyone has a secret formula that can always be applied to guarantee results. That's crossing over into dark pattern territories... I like the degree of starting to teach design philosophies for digital architecture. I think there is a curriculum to be built around that concept in this decade as our information world complexifies.
Nice vid
Thank you!
Hi, so i wanted a help from u i am a BCA graduate and i really wanted to take my masters in product design and also wanted to pursue it in UK. As of my counselor since i am opting for a change of field i might not get admission for this specific course as the universities have a requirement, Also she says that finding a product design related job will be very hard and risky because if i dont find a course related job within a year my visa will be over and i have to come back. So in a very confusing place right now can someone give me some advice.
I got an offer for a product design job, but I’m a web designer. Should I still take it considering I still have the skills for 90% of the work involved?
Look inward and ask yourself whether you'll enjoy the product design work and the company environment. Will it be better than your current job? If so, then do it!!
I still don’t understand what kind of courses I need to make to transition from UX to Product. I’m worried that product design is trying to be too many things (can you really be UX/UI an product strategist at the same time?)
Honestly, the difference between UX and Product design is very minimal. And I'm seeing a trend that Product Designer is replacing the term UX Designer. So don't worry, there isn't much of a transition from "UX" to "Product" in my opinion.
I had no option than to subscribe
No Way my mans actually edited this video 🤟
yup, my man. it's me 😎
DE DE DE BOP BOP
Do I need to study UX design first to be able to become a product designer?
And also, do you need any coding skills to be a product designer?
I know, it's super confusing. Yes, you'll need to study UX design to become a product designer. Product designers focus on both business goals and user experience goals. No coding needed to be a product designer.
UX/UI design hijacked the term product design which is just adding to confusion. To be fair, product/industrial design should have been 1 term even though they are slightly different.
I totally agree. I think we should be called software designers if we design software. Web designers if we design websites. Just like developers! They're called software developers. This makes way more sense to me.
Can I be a UX designer in physical product company like Philips , JBL , lenovo ?
I haven't seen many UX design opportunities for companies like those. However, I'm sure there are some out there. Worth a shot!
@@AndresTheDesigner I think there may be a separate UX designer related to industrial design ?
Can be shorter
Literally am I asking If you could be my teacher - mentor? 🙏🏼
hahaha, I'm not qualified yet to be a UX teacher or mentor. However, happy to hop on a call to help in anyway I can. Feel free to email me at AndresTheDesigner@gmail. com
Based on what i saw you are partially an UI designer too.(i can be terribly wrong, im sorry)
I design for both UX and UI 👍🏻
Can you be my mentor🥺
I don't do one-on-one mentorship at the moment. But I'm launching a community-based course soon! If you're interested, definitely sign up!
Hello, product designer of 30 years here... sorry to be 'a bore' but the examples you've given here are not 'product design', they're digital, service or interaction design. For example - Uber is not selling a product, they are a service, running on a digital platform, using a digital app to interact with the service. I realise these are specific bits of the whole, so this is more being called UX Design now, though personally I prefer digital design.
A product designer on the other hand designs THINGS that are 'produced' using a production process', i.e. physical objects that use industrial machinery and processes to create lots of them, probably to create an economy of scale - which is distinct from artists (creating one-off pieces) or craftspeople (who make one or more of something, where the human skill and handmaking craft is inherent in its value).
I'm only being pedantic about this as you've gone to the effort of trying to clarify this for people, plus there is a lot of confusion about this already, with lots of people nowadays turning up at our door thinking we're going to design an app for them - which we can do, but our superpower skill is designing and engineering things to be manufactured.
You know, I totally get where you're coming from. I'm pretty frustrated with how this industry has defined everything from "UX" "UX/UI" "Product" Design, etc... I'm actually considering taking this video down and refilming it. Anyway, thanks for the feedback!
I liked Andres' overall definition, I've been trying to define UX better myself as it does affect how people see us, and when explaining my profession to others, this video is pretty close to how I've been expressing it. Experience design is about how the digital product should look, function, and feel. We know a design is good when it is intuitive, easy-to-use, and satisfying.
My background is in industrial design, the classic (physical) product designer, the term/profession emerged in the period of the Industrial revolution starting from the Bauhaus days. We now live in the digital information age, so why is it so hard for people to imagine a digital designer making the same blue-prints, but instead of a mold, they are making screens and workflows for an app, a website, a software platform?
I think the fact that the digital world is already a layer of abstraction which makes it hard for people to grasp... and the skill of being a "visual communicator" is not recognized by a lot of industry and is simply sorted somewhere between graphic design or front-end dev is not sufficient.
The trouble with the UX industry is that it is such a multidisciplinary field that people are entering it from all walks of life, that a marketing heavy UX designer thinks of highlights different aspects of UX differently then a psychology slanted UX designer, or an UX designer who came from information architecture, or a data science background... Yes, it is the overall experience, and all of these components are important... Which makes me very curious about how Andres will define a "digital architect"?
I think of it similar to system architecture but this term was already taken by the hardware and software engineers. So very curious to know your thoughts and interpretation of architecture in the digital experience realm.
I couldn't watch the whole video because the background music was too loud and distracting. Please try to use a subtle audio going forward. Switching to another video that explains the concept now.
Thanks for sharing your feedback! 🙏🏼
Music is too loud
So annoying
I appreciate the feedback!
Why that loud background music? Are you making some dance video? Please be more subtle
again... movie making - I love it! 😂 you keep me on the screen like on drugs 💚 you inspire me!!!
WOW, hahaha. Super happy that you appreciate the editing style 🤣 You inspire me to make more videos!! Thanks for watching.
