What a fantasic story to tell. As an industrial designer I can appreciate the time and effort that go into products that may seem simple. It's not easy to bring an idea to market so well done. An inspiration to anyone who has an idea.
As usual, there is much to love about this video: Crazy good production value, thoughtful writing and narration, clear simple explanations and boat loads of valuable insight. The signature Matthew Encina ASMR-meditation-on-organization-and-design is in full effect (and so good) as per usual. A thing that stands out to me is your transparency around the relationship with Grovemade and how that all works. I haven't seen many other collabs so clearly unpacked, and it's very cool to see the mutual respect and genuine working relationship you have together.

I'm a fellow creator and I work in software, but I'd love to launch a physical product in the future. Watching this video was so inspirational (and also quite scary to see everything you need to get something to market). AMazing!
As a mechanical engineer who works with large mechanical equipment, this was pretty neat and cool to watch, I love the design thinking approach. As mechanical engineers, we tend to start and spend more time on function first, with fewer aesthetics, and usually, the designs are not very human-centered most importantly, we design for manufacturing so modular, reusable designs and we go hard on cost and materials. Industrial design on the other hand is pretty creative right from the brainstorming and you can kind of go wild with the ideas.
The attention to detail is crazy. The paper packaging around the note pad (10:43) with the envelope+seal style enclosure ALSO matches the angles at the top of the mod musings logo. Essentially blending the mod musings branding in with the the more obvious grove made logo… Amazing. Love the look of this collection!
I have done some steps of this process separately before. Now, watching this video and seeing the whole process, a realization that this might be the thing I can do all day for the rest of my life hit me hard. Thank you for the content!
It is fascinating how much details go into a product... every other product developer team I see out there is a collaboration of experts... I'm a third year Engineering student with a passion to create and build...and my environment keeps throwing cold water on me... I hope that one day I will find the path to take one of my many ideas from conception to product. This was inspiring in ways. Thanks.
I'm a UI/UX designer and I'm constantly using sticky notes to quickly document ideas, then referencing them later to flesh out in my sketchbook. That way I'm better organized and can filter out the better ideas from the crap. The kit will be perfect for me, so excited to look into it!

I have known Matthew Encina since I watched the first video of Futur's "Building a Brand". I recently started follwing his Mod Musings channel too. The more I watch this guy or other creatives around the world, I just keep getting more anxious, giving birth to new questions and doubts. In a good way, I mean. I am an engineering student currently. I found my passion as designer but had to pursue engineering because I cannot my education midway. Every since then I have been self learning everything to become a designer, or a better creative. The thing I have learned the most is that I am still a noob at many things, my habits, actions and reactions, my view of life, morals, principles and my thoughts. And i am lazy at some point too.. So seeing videos like this just hits me knowing that I am not doing much in life. But somewhere inside me it also lights a small beacon of hope which inspires me to do better in life! So thank for that @Matthew Encina This was a good way honestly. Loved the whole process and its videos like these that always clarify my thought that being in a crative field is such a blessing and fun adventure. Hello, I am an architecture student at the Univeristy of Calgary. It was really interesting to learn about the industrial design process of expanding ideas and then refining them. I think that designing products, specially ones people use for work is very important. It is interesting how something as small as a note pad can have very intentional designs.
I know how hard product design and development being a professional product development program organizer in industrial application. In the future many innovative solutions and innovative products will come. I appreciate this designer and his team bringing great products, All the best.

Love the content and product quality, with all the respect, as a practitioner who takes notes everyday, i am not sure if the physical form is the best form of notes taking anymore tbh, i transitioned all my notes taking to ipad and i found a lot of benefits from digital note taking, share with devices, storage for future, flexibility of editing and sharing etc. I used to love taking notes on my notebook but eventually force myselft into digital because that's where the future will be, in my view.
That makes total sense. For me, I still have a strong connection when I write things down in a physical medium. I process and remember things better this way. Many times when I write things digitally, I don't have that same connection.
The video is fantastic, the branding is solid and the journey from problem to concept to final product is one of the most educational videos I've seen in a minute. And as soon as I clicked to go take a look, I was genuinely floored with the asking price of almost $300/unit. I would be really interested to see sales numbers on this product to see how you intend to navigate the greatest barrier to entry for analytical and assertive buyer types who would just build out a competing model piecemeal for $45-60 from other products. But great design and cool collaboration with Grovemade.
The pricing is aligned with all other Grovemade products, who’s a brand that focuses on interesting design and manufacturing techniques that aren’t optimized for mass-produced cheap goods. There are tons of very inexpensive note-taking accessories out there for analytical and assertive buyers. That’s not what we wanted to make or who were trying to target. It’s a niche of users who take notes in a similar fashion as I do, and who highly value design and quality.
My first thought when I realised what it was, was that it is a silly product... by the end of the video I realised it is precisely what I have been looking for! Well done Matt and Grovemade team

I have a feeling that there is something missing in this video. I have built several products in the past and currently creating one. What really struck me is the fact that you quit your job and could take months of product development without any pay. You have a partnership with a company that doesn’t run on air alone. You have great and fully utilised workspace(s), and it seems that you don’t have to worry about any budget or income. The reality is that startups has limited sources of money and other things. They have to struggle for months, sometimes years, spend 80+ hours per week (especially if you have a job that should cover the cost of living) and they hope that finally succeed with their product, but 8 out of 10 startups don’t make it. This video is too much romanticised in my opinion. It’s absolutely rewarding to go through this process (whether you finally succeed or not), but it is not a walk in the park, like this video suggests.
I really appreciate you sharing your perspective and taking the time to comment. Of course it’s not easy by any means, and was a huge investment of time and money from both parties. This product was one project of many that we were both doing in these two years - they have an entire suite of products they produce and sell, I make video content and have clients. This situation is unique, as is everyone’s, and doesn’t showcase every single challenge and advantage we faced. But the point of this video was to give an overview of the entire process, not a fully detailed documentation. A much longer video could certainly cover those aspects, but I felt it was less digestible, and opted to format the video as you see here. Again, appreciate your curiosity and perspective.
Spot on. The commercial side of the product was glossed over in this video. And if the product is not a commercial success, the whole endeavour is an expensive vanity project.
Hey! Awesome product. I love the video. A SUGGESTION - You can paint the top of the two dividing plates on the vertical organizer with green and red like colors(one on each of the two, or more, plates). This can help consumers sort the notes on the basis of importance. Hope it helps!

Matthew I think this was a great video and you’ve designed a great product. After watching I got my payment method ready and went to purchase a kit, but seeing the price tag made me realize it’s not something I can afford. I agree that it is a luxury, but I’d really like to think you understand there are many of us that can’t afford that level of luxury. I would appreciate if you could showcase other solutions to this problem as well. Something that us broke people could enjoy
Thanks. I appreciate your intent to buy it. I always try to share my processes and solutions around my workflows. Many times I build a solution myself, usually as some DIY solution, but in this case, I had amazing partners to bring it to life in the best way possible. I understand it's out of reach for some, but all of the core ideas are presented in this video. If you study this intently and analyze your own challenges, I'm sure you can build (or put together) a similar solution that addresses your specific challenges. There are inexpensive notebooks, notepads, pens and different ways to use them. Start there. That being said, my next video will be about workflow, so you may pick up more ideas there.
From a design perspective, this video is really good...showing us your design process...but in my opinion, people are better off just buying a journal or a pocket note to take notes than to buy all 3 of these which i assume would be a 300$+ purchase
yep all this is just to sell products in the end. not practical nor economical. It's for people who like overpriced desk accessories and content creators who wants you to buy using their affiliate (who get it for free anyways to advertise for grovemade).

I would bet my house that they wouldn't (I would also bet that there are studies like that)). Having tactile, physical connection to a thought makes it more real/tangible than a notion page. Did you "cat test" though?)
I love the story telling and video editing, also all the furnitures in all the video...but about the product, this is the kind of thing that we dont really need for living or actually for be more productive/creative...but it seems high quality.
Industrial designer here. first of all, great video and a realy nice summery of the design process along with lovely story telling. Just this alone can be quite insightful. I'd like to add that what matt did here is called industrial design and is a career path and speciality within design and the creative field. for those interested this is a full time job. I would also like to add that bringing a product to market is a very complex process and an indutrial designer should be brought it to help anyone realise their ideas before jumping into the deep end. Creating a product isn't as easy as it may look and can go wrong very quickly. always consult a professional before starting. great video though, you have a sub from me

Congratulations! I’d been casually watching your videos for almost a year now but recently subscribed. Very informative and yet soothing to see your creative process.
Neat. I love the idea and focus on note-taking. For a lot of "knowledge worker" (sic), work tends to be fully digital and dependent on the company you work for. At the same time, it's obvious everyone interacts with knowledge, note taking, information in different ways. And with the open space culture, often coupled with a free seating situation, one doesn't really get "a desk" or a dedicated space for work. This changes per company, but even more so when working remotely. Now, for many, it's obvious that having a space with "your" ideal tools, assets and systems to work is a big plus. I love the idea and have been trying to figure out how to optimize and make my note taking work for me on the digital world. But for so many (and for me), maybe a physical solution could make more sense in the end. I like that a lot.
Glad you can see the vision for this. I personally have a much better connection (and retention) to my ideas when captured and stored this way. Though digital still plays a huge role in my project management.
This video was so exciting to watch! Please do more of these kinds of videos to show us the application of design thinking and how that materializes into physical products!

There are tons of very inexpensive note-taking accessories out there for analytical and assertive buyers. That’s not what we wanted to make or who were trying to target. It’s a niche of users who take notes in a similar fashion as I do, and who highly value design and quality.
My first thought when I realised what it was, was that it is a silly product... by the end of the video I realised it is precisely what I have been looking for! Well done Matt and Grovemade team

I have a feeling that there is something missing in this video. I have built several products in the past and currently creating one. What really struck me is the fact that you quit your job and could take months of product development without any pay. You have a partnership with a company that doesn’t run on air alone. You have great and fully utilised workspace(s), and it seems that you don’t have to worry about any budget or income. The reality is that startups has limited sources of money and other things. They have to struggle for months, sometimes years, spend 80+ hours per week (especially if you have a job that should cover the cost of living) and they hope that finally succeed with their product, but 8 out of 10 startups don’t make it. This video is too much romanticised in my opinion. It’s absolutely rewarding to go through this process (whether you finally succeed or not), but it is not a walk in the park, like this video suggests.

Of course it’s not easy by any means, and was a huge investment of time and money from both parties.
This product was one project of many that we were both doing in these two years - they have an entire suite of products they produce and sell, I make video content and have clients.
This situation is unique, as is everyone’s, and doesn’t showcase every single challenge and advantage we faced. But the point of this video was to give an overview of the entire process, not a fully detailed documentation.
A much longer video could certainly cover those aspects, but I felt it was less digestible, and opted to format the video as you see here.
Again, appreciate your curiosity and perspective.

Spot on. The commercial side of the product was glossed over in this video. And if the product is not a commercial success, the whole endeavour is an expensive vanity project.

Hey! Awesome product. I love the video. A SUGGESTION - You can paint the top of the two dividing plates on the vertical organizer with green and red like colors(one on each of the two, or more, plates). This can help consumers sort the notes on the basis of importance. Hope it helps!

Matthew I think this was a great video and you’ve designed a great product. After watching I got my payment method ready and went to purchase a kit, but seeing the price tag made me realize it’s not something I can afford.
I agree that it is a luxury, but I’d really like to think you understand there are many of us that can’t afford that level of luxury.
I would appreciate if you could showcase other solutions to this problem as well. Something that us broke people could enjoy
Thanks. I appreciate your intent to buy it. I always try to share my processes and solutions around my workflows. Many times I build a solution myself, usually as some DIY solution, but in this case, I had amazing partners to bring it to life in the best way possible.
I understand it's out of reach for some, but all of the core ideas are presented in this video. If you study this intently and analyze your own challenges, I'm sure you can build (or put together) a similar solution that addresses your specific challenges.
There are inexpensive notebooks, notepads, pens and different ways to use them. Start there.
That being said, my next video will be about workflow, so you may pick up more ideas there.

From a design perspective, this video is really good...showing us your design process...but in my opinion, people are better off just buying a journal or a pocket note to take notes than to buy all 3 of these which i assume would be a 300$+ purchase

I would bet my house that they wouldn't (I would also bet that there are studies like that)). Having tactile, physical connection to a thought makes it more real/tangible than a notion page.

I love the story telling and video editing, also all the furnitures in all the video...but about the product, this is the kind of thing that we dont really need for living or actually for be more productive/creative...but it seems high quality.

Industrial designer here. first of all, great video and a realy nice summery of the design process along with lovely story telling. Just this alone can be quite insightful.
I'd like to add that what matt did here is called industrial design and is a career path and speciality within design and the creative field. for those interested this is a full time job.
I would also like to add that bringing a product to market is a very complex process and an indutrial designer should be brought it to help anyone realise their ideas before jumping into the deep end. Creating a product isn't as easy as it may look and can go wrong very quickly. always consult a professional before starting.

That could be the case. However, in our test group, it proved to be very useful. Time will tell.
I'm a permaculture designer, and it's really interesting to see you follow many of the same principles we use in system design.
I think most design industries follow a very similar process.
Grove made has cool looking products, including this one but $300 for paper kit?!? And you're gonna have to refill on their specific paper which I assume isn't cheap. Hate how they price their products, not consumer friendly at all, esp with having to buy their specific paper. Lame

I love the idea and focus on note-taking.
For a lot of "knowledge worker" (sic), work tends to be fully digital and dependent on the company you work for. At the same time, it's obvious everyone interacts with knowledge, note taking, information in different ways. And with the open space culture, often coupled with a free seating situation, one doesn't really get "a desk" or a dedicated space for work. This changes per company, but even more so when working remotely. Now, for many, it's obvious that having a space with "your" ideal tools, assets and systems to work is a big plus.
I love the idea and have been trying to figure out how to optimize and make my note taking work for me on the digital world. But for so many (and for me), maybe a physical solution could make more sense in the end.
I like that a lot.
Glad you can see the vision for this. I personally have a much better connection (and retention) to my ideas when captured and stored this way. Though digital still plays a huge role in my project management.
