YES! Another Production Design video! So happy! I love seeing PD representation. Thank you for asking all these in-depth questions because so many people don't understand these things.
Weirdly enough i DID notice the design in Uncut Gems because the whole thing is so chaotic and kinda feels so insane that it looks real? But it didn’t take me out of the story, it drew me in further. Never ever thought any of it was on a soundstage. It felt all « on location » and the constant overlap and insane direction just grabs you by the hair at 200mph so you dont think about it.
Damn this is crazy, I didnt think there was this much attention to detail for the sets modeled after a certain time period. Thanks guys for sharing these and adding in the dope animations and edits.
Had no idea he did those films! And that bo burnam directed eight grade! The little things you miss.. thanks indymogul for spotlighting all these incredible talented artists !
So you’re telling me Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach and Sam Lisenco lived in the SAME APARTMENT. Wow...damn so much talent and success in one apartment.
The whole content in here is pure gem ! Thank you so much you both, you're making things simple to us... about how complicated they actually are on set (and before !).
That brings me back, I remember a long time ago working on a production about teenagers, I had to create and populate multiple my-space accounts (yes that long ago), then get the actors to take over and talk to each other over it for a few weeks.
6:58 i love egg chairs and notice every one i come across in a room, i also love Frances Ha and I never saw that egg chair off the street before. Interesting, good subject matter Indy Mogul
The production designer is typically the highest paid member of the art department (according to IATSE 891 2021 rate sheet), and it has the SECOND highest position (the art director) making $52.44 per hour. It's easy to work 60+ hours a week when you're making that kind of money.
woooow I have dreamed of this video since I saw Uncut Gems. I am very interested in production design especially in the independent field. Yes, Wes Anderson movies look very nice but it's the work in movies like Uncut Gems that really blow my mind. literally in each frame you can see crystals, gold and blue tones. It is possible to create an aesthetic consistency not only by smearing a series of colors on the walls, but with each small object that is seen on the screen, creating a connection between completely different places and scenes. (BTW, Howard's showroom is one of my favorite sets in history) Lastly (omg I'm a total nerd) in the scene where Howard enters his office to fall asleep and the musical piece "f * ck you Howard" plays, the camera pans right at the exact moment so that when the plasma ball enters to frame, a synth sounds, as if the same object produced the sound, MINDBLOWING! Thanks for all Sam, you are a great inspiration !!!!
It would be awesome if you could ask them about their work or collaboration with the DP and vice versa, for example if Sam wants a color consistent and the DP has a color of light that changes the color that Sam wanted, how that relationship works?
I really don't understand why Production Design is so under spoken about and unknown to the general public. It's literally everything you are seeing on screen besides the actors. Even lighting if the source is seen on camera, falls under the responsibility of Production Design. Thanks for helping our department become wider known.
5:11 does this Fair Use submission become unnecessary when the project they appear in is NOT a COMMERCIAL production intended to make a profit, but is instead a freely available (no charge to view thus no profit) and intended as a kind of public service message or a film intended solely to educate?
How does Sam keeps track of what objects are needed in which scenes in relation to its inventory ? Does he use a specific software like Airtable for that ? Or does he do it the hard way with simple but enormous manual lists in excel ?
When I saw that shot with the wire, it really bothered me. I don't think the white network wire was a good choice at all (unless it going to be used to strangle someone). The other blue and black wire feel organic in the scene. Even the white router is fine.. But that white wire is annoying and distracting. I'm on the DP side on this one.
Seriously enjoy this type of content -- it's awesome to see all the different approaches to different roles.

Of course! Are there questions that you have for future production designers coming on to the show?

Definitely feel like the busy look of the sets contribute to the chaotic feeling of the movie!
Dude, I thought Uncut Gems had used real scenarios sets. Can't believe they were designed! Incredible work!
Damn this is crazy, I didnt think there was this much attention to detail for the sets modeled after a certain time period. Thanks guys for sharing these and adding in the dope animations and edits.
Yes! Production design is soo important
Had no idea he did those films! And that bo burnam directed eight grade! The little things you miss.. thanks indymogul for spotlighting all these incredible talented artists

King's Landing.
Thank you for this video. There are not enough production design videos on RUclips.
yeah now we see how important are the details, i must say this is one of the main things in the movies but no one is noticing 👏👏👏 respect

That's amazing. And people complain about "how hard" their job is. Wow. Ordered chaos. :)
True filmmaker here!

Great video guys. I love the touch on locations and giving props to the locations managers. 💪
My favorite episode in a while! Thanks for making this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
3:48 lol I'm literally looking at that lamp as we speak, still thinking of the best way to dispose of it
Can't believe I'm just now discovering this channel! This is a gold mine of incredible filmmaking content. Keep it up😄
Great interview and insight to the filming process!
This guy is a legend!!! I love the art
Production design is the hardest term to explain to the low budget film makers. I always have a hard time.
Informative and straightforward thank you!
I used to watch your channel everyday back in elementary school when Erik Beck was on here and the wheel and puppet all that
This was amazing, thanks so much for making the interview happen. 👍
Ooh, the video timeline is tagged by the scene being discussed... Is that new? Nice addition!
Thank you , thank you , thank you finally
More of this topic please please 🙏
There's definitely more in the works!

This was awesome. Thanks for posting!
That was eyeopening! Thank you so much!

El mejor video que he visto sobre diseño de producción
This episode is awesome! Thank you!
I would have never guessed that was a soundstage in uncut gems 😮
Really great stuff. Thanks!
Such good content! Thanks for sharing.
very cool !
Love it as always!
Can you explain an effect in Scott Pilgrim vs the world where the room exponentially extends following the camera?
Awesome episode! It would be cool if y’all could make a video about fair use branding.
Great idea!

Is it the best frame for the movie , not the best frame u can design 🔥🔥🔥
Production design is definitely in the small details!
Indy Mogul hmm no offense I don’t get what that has to do with my comment can you please explain
Great video . thanks you

Is that Adam Driver in Frances Ha?

Update: just listened to the full podcast and holy shit. (!)
Right? What on earth is that story??
Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!
Bo “Burnman”, you say?
As a writer and director, he’s becoming a real playa.
The comedian who's also a festival in the desert. Yes.
Very, very underrated
Absolutely!
I thought for sure the jewelry showroom was real. Amazing work!
Just wow
Splice where ?
Nice
Lisenco is a ukranian surname, cool cool.
Love all the work he has done
Where can I get me that Aputure hat tho

Heres some questions from twitter, first...ok last question..wait that's only two.
Is there room to become a director as a production designer?
what is the difference between a Production Designer and Art director ???

Funny how much that director Bo Burnman guy looks like Bo Burnham the comedian... OH WAIT! ;)
It's literally a magic trick.
ive been putting off watching uncut gems coz its obviously a real film..... netflix here we come (after this finishes obviously)
It's so good! Love the chaotic feeling of the film
Bo Burnman
