    “Art directors creates characters and stories but instead of doing it with words like a writer or composition like a cinematographer, they use objects, settings, colors and little details.. its somewhat subconscious ”
    This briefs all the job, thank you for the great video!

    That observation you made about how art direction creates the character by using objects and details reminded me of how Alan Moore gives highly detailed instructions on what the artist should include in the scenery for the comics he writes.

      Doda Garcia That’s awesome! I’m sure the production design teams on the films made from his comics are grateful for those details. The art direction in V for Vendetta is one of my faves 💯

    i just cant get the differences between
    art director
    production designer
    and set designer
    and what knoweledge/ or degree i should have studied ( which university)
    or can i do master on it, for example if i studied architecture university...
    whose working on giving the main idea and designing set and scene for the theatres, music videos and concerts?

    3:00-4:00 caught me off guard because about a about yr ago I would notice little things like lightning and angles in films so my mom picked up on that later recommending i should work with photography...on the other hand I appreciate so many other things creatively so IDK if I wanna be a photographer, creative director, artistic director, designer or what! But this video did help me understand this niche a bit more so thank you for that

    I loved the video, everything is perfect. The way that you explain how important art direction is, the films and scenes that you choose were great, the music is so good, and I really appreciate what Garrett said cause it's not the same to read something that some buzzfeed post says about the job than an actual person who work at it. I would like to know more about how got into cinematography, what he studied, his personal experience basically.
    Thank you for making such a good video, I'm going to suscribe and watch more of your videos and if they are the same quality as this, you deserve better.

    What does Art Director do during post production in films?

    • @AlexKillian

      Art Directors really have no role in post, their job is done after wrap and sometimes even done after pre production.

      @@AlexKillian “sometimes even done after pre-production” ? so art directors sometimes doesn’t really work during production? sorry if I have too many questions! haha I have a film subject every Saturday and my professor just asked us to research about the crews of film and tv prod and their job descriptions!

    How do you collaborate with the director of photography? You said that the cinematographer is responsible for the composition which is true but not complete. Cinematographer is responsible creating the visual language of the film and the color can be a big part of that. You said that the art directors decide what colors the wall papers going to be. I cannot imagine a good director of photography who doesn’t care about the color of the wallpaper that will be used in the scene. So I wonder if the art directors can do whatever they want or they are responsible to design the set while considering the needs and the choices of the director of photography. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

    • @AlexKillian
      @AlexKillian  3 года назад

      Correct you are! There should absolutely be collaboration between the Art Director and the DP. I’d say it depends on the type of project and the creative team in particular, which of them has more of a say in the overall visual language of the film. But in most larger scale productions, the DP’s preference is more important. Thanks for watching!!

  • @kamcsat
    @kamcsat 4 месяца назад

    Great video!
    The professions listed below the art director are completely wrong though. The Property master and the set decorator are working directly for the production designer, they have their own art directors. (So they are way above the art directors)
    A storyboard artist almost never works for an art director. A storyboard artist is usually being hired by the director or in a small percentage of the cases by the prod designer.
    The set dresser works for the set decorator, the concept artist is kindof on the same level as the art director - hired by the prod designer, or the set decorator or the prop master. (sometimes by the director). The makeup artist has nothing to do with the art department. (but of course it is a team work so everything is connected in a way)
    In Fact the only 2 professions that are directly linked to the art director within the art department are the assistant art directors and the Draftsperson.
