    That's certainly a good old Perkins engine, I worked at the Perkins factory in 1970-71 (UK) at that time the engine of the day was the 4108 the one just after yours though virtually the same. The engine was shipped to the US and used in Massy Ferguson tractors. It was used by Sir Francis Chichester’s round-the-world yacht Gipsy Moth III. .30,000 were built at the Peterborough (UK) factory in 1970

    Congratulations - best choice - I Iove to see like minded fellow boaters. After all your comparison with "Giraffe", there is the biggest difference to your Cheoy Lee yet to be discovered, once you are ready to sail her. You will find a BIG difference, and your present boat has tenfold the sailing characteristics and capabilities compared with today's short keel, spade rudder affairs.
    P.S.: I have a 1965, 30 ft Cheoy Lee ketch, still in the reno phase, of course.

    Great to find someone willing to restore a classic wood boat. My hubby & I have owned 2 wood boats ( 2nd one was a 34' Franz Maas yawl - teak hull, teak decks, mahogany cabin). Then (for more self punishment) we got a Swedish Ohlson 41 (steel hull, teak cockpit, mahogany cabin & interiors). We believe that traditional oil based, quality varnishes are best for the wood. even teak; get 6 coats on & then make or buy a awning cover to keep the UV sun off. Re-coat with 1 or 2 coats every 6 months. For our solid teak cockpit seats, we use Semco - it's a type of oil - it worked really well for the year we spent in Mex & So Cal. I think it would be hard to use on your decks because you are not supposed to get it on the caulking. Generally teak decks should be kept clean but just with water, many cleaners are too harsh & erode the softer grain of the wood. Tropical sun ruins the teak decks on lots of FG boats, so awning are a must!
    We totally re-caulked the decks on our Maas yawl; it's a real hard job removing the old caulking. Our decks leaked like a shower! Good luck

    On the water Pump or any Copper items . I use Barkeepers Friend. I shake out some of the BKF Powder into small cup add water or degreaser and make a paste. Then spread paste and one can use brushes and or 3-m scotchbrite pads to shine like new.

    Beautiful looking boat Josh. My guess is that she was originally a gaffer. Those belaying pins are typical of gaff rigged boats and the metal mast would have replaced the original wooden mast. There's a lot of gaffers here in Falmouth in Cornwall, England.

    When I first started just "window shopping" for my first sailboat, I was totally smitten with a '70s Cheoy Lee 42' Luders-designed clipper-rigged ketch rather similar to yours. Of course it was absolutely the WRONG boat for me, but I totally get it. Hell, if you weren't three time zones away, I might pitch in to help refinish that teak. By now you've likely learned that many owners just strip that teak decking if it's too far gone, but yours still looks salvageable, and you might get away with a proper recaulking. Carry on!

    Great to see you once again and Big Congrats on your ... New Old Boat... a Choi Lee ... many many years back I had a contract on one of those boats but sadly at a closer look it did not pass . If memory serves me right those teak decks are screw downs into cored Balsa and fiber glass . On the video they appeared to be a bit thin and not sand-able . I have sailed a number of Choi Lee's and always liked how they Sailed a very good solid feel .

    It’s not in too bad of shape for it’s age. It has been maintained up to a few years ago. That varnish needs to be redone about every two years if exposed to the elements. You will be a slave to the boat to keep it ship shape and Bristol fashion.

    Beautiful boat Josh. I also have a fiberglass hull with teak decks and lots of wood trim except it is a 38' trawler. I've been having a lot of luck refinishing with three coats of West system epoxy with 207 UV hardener, followed by three coats of Epiphanes varnish. I apply the three coats of epoxy back-to-back without sanding, when the epoxy is tacky. The end result looks like 12 coats of varnish and so far is holding up very well in sunny Marina del Rey. Good luck with her. I am the author of myself!

    Brightwork - have you considered just oiling the upper cabin & other " wood "? Once you commit to varnishing, you are committing to untold hours of yearly / biyearly sanding, sanding, sanding....
    With oil, you should have less hours sanding, tho yes, bi yearly oiling..... but more sailing adventure time
    Looking forward to watching her transformation.

      Thanks. I’ve researched all kinds of options: Cetol, oil, sealer, etc. Nothing looks as good as varnish, in my opinion. But after re-varnishing most of the boat already, I’m beginning to question whether the looks are worth it. It’s a crazy time-consuming process. Many people say it’s like the Golden Gate Bridge where when they finish painting one end they immediately start back at the other end. That is not an exaggeration with varnish, even on my small boat. But there’s also a reason varnish has been the gold standard in boat brightwork for centuries. Thanks for following!

    Hi guys. Loving your videos. I'm new to sailing and just been offered a 26ft sloop wooden boat from 1966. She's in superb condition and been excellently maintained over the years. A few people are telling me I'm ma buying a wooden boat and will spend more time maintaining her than actually sailing lol.
    Wondered what you guys think on the matter. Be fascinating to hear from you. 👍

    • @JoshPostVlogs
      @JoshPostVlogs  2 года назад +1

      Thanks. You will definitely need to devote a lot of time to the wood maintenance. You have to create a schedule and plan a day or two per month with varnish or other maintenance. If you stick with a strict schedule and if you have time for that, it’s not too bad. But if you are busy with other stuff. Maybe you work a lot or have other hobbies and not planning to work on the boat much, then it’s definitely a lot of work. I’d say a wooden boat is for someone who is retired from work and who loves to tinker on their boat with maintenance a few times per week. Or someone who can pay someone to work on the boat a few days per month.

The Classic's are amazing to look at, yet I not the condition of the teek and the bullworks, all exterior wood is in need of full restoration! and I already have $$$$$$$ signs and many hours of labor! The sails are far gone and need replacing! Wenches need attention and the troubles with the classic deck/sail mechanisms is finding the parts to recondition them!

    The BIGGEST issue is the deck ... 1965 .... hundreds of screw holes ..... an the boat looks like the decking was not properly maintained, the salt/sun is a brutal on teak decks. Leakage is gonna be your main issue, have you spotted any leakage inside the cabin ? I first learn of Cheoy Lee in 70's from none other than Jimmy Buffet, he had Clipper 48, sweet boat.
    Good luck with the decking, a lot of current CL owners are stripping and either going with glued teak or the NEW faux vinyl teak or plain FG with Awlgrip (no teak)
    The teak pin rail is a very nice touch, mine had 4 bronze belaying pins on each rail. Most sailors don't realize what they are missing by not having these.
    How is this hatch 17:32 secured, watertight ?

    • @JoshPostVlogs
      @JoshPostVlogs  3 года назад

      Thanks. Yes the deck is going to be tough. No major leaking under the deck but the water certainly gets in below the teak but luckily not through the fiberglass that is below the teak. I’m looking at the faux teak perhaps. Was thinking of trying to salvage this deck but not sure if possible. The manhole at the end is water tight. It simply fits down in a groove and the lid / hatch itself super heavy. Cool story about Jimmy Buffet.

    Reminds me of Dad's old yacht, an Abeking and Rasmussen 10 meter. He sold it in '86. I always wondered what happened to it and did a google search on it a couple of years ago. To my surprise, there it was, fully restored and it was for sale. I live a long way from the closest mooring these days but I decided to give the owner a call and have a chat. I was on the 'phone to him for over an hour. He'd done the restoration as soon as he bought it and had been living aboard for nearly 30 years and had kept the boat in immaculate condition.
    Despite the geographical challenge (3hr. round trip), I still wonder if I made a mistake in not writing a check.
    I hope that you can achieve what that fellow did and I hope you can make his son envious too, in another 30 years.

    I couldn't believe it when I saw those 'belaying pins' as in 'belay that order' great boat - Choi Lee is one of the best trawlers out there so I have got to believe their sail boats are the same.

    As a lawyer perhaps you might consider teaching what the immigration laws are like in the Bahamas, elements of maritime law, becoming the go-to-source for legal information.

    Looking to do the same. Do you mind stating the purchase price? I'll help me gage my search. Congrats. Maybe I'll see you out there.
