    17:54 That's my sailboat there in the background!
    That day in October there were few ships on the water, despite the fact that there was a nice breeze and it only rained for 15 minutes. Like you, I took shelter inside and after you left, I too went sailing again. If I had known you were on board that Lemster barge, I would definitely have come and have a chat, because I'm a big fan of your RUclips channel! I wish you a safe journey!

    Huub's Maud, the lemsteraak is really beautiful, as is this episode (again).
    A few additional details: The way the mainsail is attached to the boom is called "een losse broek" (loose trousers). And the 'aids' at 17:34 are called "kloten" (balls, as in cojones), which Aladino held in admiration... ;-)
    The lee-boards are called "zijzwaarden" (side-swords). The ones on Maud are actually "zeezwaarden" (sea-boards) as they are long and narrow. Inland boards are normally maybe a little shorter (not necessarily) but surely much wider (twice ore more).
    Looking forward to your next episode!

    I cannot wait until the end to say how much I like this episode! A soon I saw Maud, I knew this would be an exceptionally nice episode. Nothing beats the beauty of a Lemsteraak. Oh, and the music is beautiful as well, as alway, even if you did not play yourself. (At least not in the first 15 minutes).
    At first I wondered why Maud does not have a bowsprit, as a Lemsteraak commonly has, but at the end I understood. My smile was as wide as Aladino's. I love to see you enjoying our country.

    • @SailingMagicCarpet
      @SailingMagicCarpet  3 года назад +2

      My understanding is that they're less well suited for blue water boats, but now that I think of it that may be just the overall design of these boats themselves rather than the leeboards in particular. Perhaps someone else can weigh in? -Maya

    • @ajknives4192
      @ajknives4192 3 года назад

      Yes they are more likely to sail in shallower waters and maybe some parts of the Northern sea. But an Ocean crossing I would not recommend in such a boat. Most or all Blue water boats have a very low point of balance (below the waterline) but boats like this are more stable due to the large area that's touching the Water (like a Catamaran)

      @@ajknives4192 . As a matter of fact . The eel barges that sailed from Friesland to London , they had there own mooring close by the tower bridge , where also flatbotom ships with leeboards . Also the Thames barges that sailed with cargo all around the North sea . And the realy big "Groninger zee tjalken" where going as far as Newfoundland . They also had leeboards . And in the 1600's all Dutch fleets employed one or more jachten mainly for carrying people between the ships of the fleet . All over the world and with leeboards . Sailing with leeboards is very different than sailing on a keelyacht . But when handled with respect and good sailorship a lot is possible .

      Sailboats with a deep, heavy keel sail to windward better than other designs. I had a Irwin 10/4 when I lived in SW Florida (shallow water). It had a shallow draft keel with a centerboard and 2000lb ballast but, it was wide for it's length, 10'4" beam on a 25' LOD boat. The 2'9" draft made it good for the shallow water but, it gave away a lot in upwind ability. There was a small boat design that some people built in the 60s that had lee boards but, Google won't find it for me. There are some rather beamy, shallow draft, twin keel boats, Westerly made several (Centaur 26' was most popular) but, I think the main advantage for them is they stay upright when the tide goes out and leaves them aground.

    This looks like lake 'De Fluessen' .
    I remember 40 years ago that i sailed an 'Optimist' , a small dinghy with a wooden sword. And that sword BROKE... while i was supposed to follow the big family Etap28. But without a sword (skegg?) no more tacking for me, the only thing i could do was to go down wind to that very same island. No mobile phones back then! So i was stuck on that 'deserted' island. Luckily my struggle with the Optimist had been noticed so the Etap had turned around to 'rescue' me. Simpler times. Happier days!
    That Lemsteraak is a sweet ship.
    My great-great grandfather used to own a flat bottom 'Skutsje' cargo ship called 'Nova Cura' , he and his family lived on board while carrying cargo from Friesland to North-Holland and back as 'beurt schippers'. Beurt being that schippers had to wait for getting a load assigned to carry.
    Sadly the ship ended up in Amsterdam as a 'woonboot' ( basically a floating house).
    Thnx for the lovely video!

    This form of boat honestly seems like it'd be an ideal sailing houseboat. You've got plenty of space to live on, without the deep draft you'd expect from it's weight. I was just about to mention that I was curious how well Maud would do in blue water, but I see you've mentioned that. It surprises me that she'd not be good on the ocean because she looks the part, even if not being the fastest.

While sailing a 60 ft schooner in the Virgin Islands, we met 2 men who invited us to sail to St John, Virgin Gorda etc. on their 75 ft x 25 ft Dutch steel sailboat with huge leeboards. It was a beautiful boat, inside and outside. It's sailing abilities couldn't compare to our schooner with a 9 ft draft but what a beautiful liveaboard she was. A funny thing with these flatbottoms is that if you're in the tidal area of the Wadden Sea in one with very low draught and you sail while the other flatbottoms are already stranded by the low tide there's a little envy, and a lot of respect and interest in the boat. Of course it doesn't matter, it's only half an hour of sailing extra and beeing stranded on the Wad is no problem for a flatbottom at all. Nor is it a bad place to stay the night and step out to find some mussels and oysters. It's not a competition, but in low draught boats the draught can't be low enough.

    Ho ho ho, so Nice, so great. I can’t wait any longer. Skip the winter and let’s start sailing again.
    ‘Chickenskin’ from toes to top!
    Beautiful video.

    Very interesting turnaround maneuver! Another boat type which is very well suited for such waters, but more elegant is a Norfolk wherry. Henry Montagu Doughty used his to go from Friesland through Mecklenburg to Bohemia and has written a wonderful book about that journey.

    Casting about for a new superlative and coming up empty. Brilliant day, brilliant people! When I think of all the talented people on RUclips who are not employed by a corporation or studio system; one can see how much diverse beauty Hollywood and other elites have denied us.

    Wonderful story: intriguing boat and its Captain. I’d love to know more of his trip to Stockholm, presumably a Bluewater voyage.

    If you push these boats to their limits, they are quite fast too. They are built for that. The first in would get the best prize for the fish they caught. The other type of flat bottoms called "botters" have a special rig without stays to haul the nets. These typical Dutch boat designs are worth the study for anyone who's interrested in traditional working boats.

    Check out a Meadowlark/Mudlark Design. 33' LOA 8' Beam 18" Draft with Lee Boards and Ketch Gaff Rig. Designed for I think Louisiana (dont quote me on that) but the South Eastern US shallows. Well able for Ocean crossings and Heavy Weather. I have crossed the Irish Sea from Carlingford Lough to the Isle of Man, in Force 8-9 reaching speeds of 12-14 Knots, Reefed and with tripple warp Drouge out behind (due to engine failure). 3/4" Larch on Oak Frames. Fantastic Boat. Unfortunately, she was Lost when a Lorry caught fire beside her in a yard where she was wintering in the early 90s'.

    You said "not for world wide sailing" - well they were used on the English Channel and the North sea - what else could qualify them for open sea?
    And when Huub visited Stockholm he also had to travel on open sea.
    And - if anybody thinks of slow and sailing for elderlies you should attend one of the many regattas they do in the summer.

    I wish I could find out more about Dutch sailboats, I'm a 6'8"/204 cm sailor and I can't stand up inside my own boat nor most ships or anything, really. I'd be so happy if I could get an offshore capable sailboat that I can stand up in🥰

      There definitely would be some Dutch boats suited as many are your height, but flatbottoms are not recommended offshore.

    These "platbodems" are my favorite.. I used to sail a "school/training" talk on the South Netherlands Delta..We trained kids the "on board" discipline and the hard work of sails and leeboards (zwaarden) handling ..

  • @druniver
    @druniver 3 года назад

    For those people questioning leeboards, blue water and speed of these kind of barges, check out this 'tjalk', doing 11 knots in the Mediterraen sea. A tjalk is a bigger boat than a 'Lemster Aak', however similar in design.
    The concept of a rounded bow is re-discovered in the design of the 6.5 Mini by the French naval architect David Raison. www.idbmarine.com/en/maxi/650/maxi650.php
    Raison’s Mini smashed the competition during the Transatlantic in 2011, setting a new course record. His success was so significant that other important monohull racing classes, Open 60s, Class 40s, TP 52s, quickly banned these now called 'scow bows' for fear their existing fleets would instantly be rendered obsolete.
    So, these old Friesian boatdesigners were not that stupid.
    For your information, in the old days, when these barges were build from wood,. these boat-builders didn't use any paper-work for calculations and drawings. Everything was done by heart.
