The difference between mach-e and this is that id.4 is eligible for the 5000$ from federal gov in Canada. This brings the price 13.000$ down in Quebec (tax in). Putting the base price below 45k was a great marketing strategy for VW. At a lower price than the competition will sell very well.

I've interned at Volkswagen a couple of years ago in their Coprorate Strategy Department and let me say: This car symbolizes everything that is wrong with this company.
VW stated its meant to compete with the RAV4 and CRV, a completely different target market than the Model Y and Mach E. Its not meant to be flashy or cult worship, just an electric crossover for the masses.
With the annoying interior controls, gloss black everything, and charging issues, I might as well stick with a CR-V or RAV4 over this. The interior execution just ruined a very decent car.
Yeah, the cheapest Model Y you can order today is $12K more than the base ID.4, and you don't get the $7,500 tax credit. You can guy a second car with that extra $19,500. Totally different pricepoints.
I'll be cross shopping the ID.4 with the hybrid RAV4 and CR-V, so I'd like to learn how the ID.4's handling and acceleration compare with those two and other compact SUVs.
I've noticed that. These reviewers have to walk the line carefully so they don't offend the manufacturer. If they do they risk getting blacklisted and cutoff. Sorry, but I'm team Yuri here. This design is good looking, functional, and inoffensive. The Y looks comparatively awkward. I think the performance complaints are overstepping it. This is clearly designed to fall in the footsteps of the average car purchaser, think about the HP ratings for the CR-V, RAV-4, Civic, Soul, Camry (4 cylinder). These numbers and this performance is completely in line with those. The black plastic and control complication comments are completely spot on though. I don't think you guys commented on ride quality much, but perhaps I missed it. Here in Montreal it's a big deal, and I care more about the ride quality than I do the 1 time a month I have a fun curvy road to take.

As a grown up vw fan boy VW needs to here all of this negativity because the future is not all touch screens and gloss black. And we definitely dont need baby sitters. Excellent review guys.
I don't need driving engagement in a daily driver. Why so annoyed that it won't let you go fast? I don't go fast in my diesel SUV, ever. I just want comfort and practicality. The touch sensitive buttons and some of the features are annoying though.
Because electric cars have so much torque, which allows you to accelerate instantly. This doesn’t do that nearly as well as the mustang Mach e or Tesla model y
@@recnepse7498 I hate to break it to you, but most people do not buy cars to accelerate instantly. This vehicle was designed to compete against small ICE suv/crossovers not model Y and Mach E. The Mach E is hideous and the Tesla while fast is not a looker either, not to mention the horrible build quality. I will take the gloss black over crushing my kneecap on the infotainment unit in the Mach E. To put it quite simply this vehicle will sell in volume which is what it was designed to do. I wish they would have reviewed the vehicle as someone who the vehicle is intended for. Not every vehicle has to have blazing acceleration and ear piercing exhaust note. Not every vehicle has to do twice the speed limit through cliché corner. Some vehicles are meant to take you to work and run errands in comfort.
@@shawncarr9855 Here's the thing, though: The vehicles this thing competes against DO offer speed, power and performance that this thing lacks. It's a weakness that bears mentioning. Will it be a deal-breaker for everyone? No. But it's a piece of consumer advice that may sway people's decisions.
The problem is that ID4 doesn't gain anything for its complete lack of driving engagement - it is just as expensive and has no greater practicality than its more engaging competitors.
I saw it the other day in person when I test drove the ID3. Quite like the looks of both. Also liked how the ID3 drove. Yes, maybe not extremely exciting, but at that pricepoint, it's pretty good value for money overall if you need a usable family electric car.
I'm curious to know how sport focused one can make these two cars in the future by changing tires and rideheight (or suspension if the budget is there)
I love how brutally honest y'all are so keep the rants coming! Very excited to see what you guys think of the Ioniq 5 later this year since you liked both the Ioniq and the Kona so much.
This car reminds me of when Apple computers had 1 mouse button. It was supposed to be "simple" but it ends up being more complicated when you need to hold a keyboard button while clicking a mouse button instead of just using 2 buttons. They added a rear button to toggle between front and back windows instead of just using 4 standard buttons.
Maybe the review would improve with the AWD version, ability to turn off all the traction control and a software update to fix the lag? Oh, and a VW-supplied microfiber cloth to constantly wipe off the nasty piano black interior surfaces.
Team Jakub on the exterior styling. The wavy beltline is my biggest complaint. It makes the body sides look taller and puffier than they should. Visually, there's too much vertical distance between the beltline and the wheel well openings. I do appreciate your honest reviews, including both complaints and praise!
I have an id.4 for 2 years and it’s been great. I drive around 50 miles back and forth everyday for work and not once has it let me stranded. With 30,000 miles on it I would say that’s pretty reliable. the stuff your complaining about window switches and temp controls isn’t a big deal in reality. The car is one of the best value Ev’s for around $40,000 with tax credit. Y’all are tripping.
This is my 4th EV and I actually love it. This isn't meant to be a sports car. We own a Model 3 for that. Some of the things they complain about they just need to learn more about. You can leave the air on when you get out. Read the screen! You can't just test drive this and know everything. But when you own it and know what you can do it's great.
I ALWAYS appreciate your guys' honesty. Your chemistry as reviewers is 80% of the reason I watch, 10% for y'all calling out the OEMs bullshit, and the last remaining 10% is for the dope editing. This ID4 seems like a swing and a miss, but for VWs first independent full electric model (not counting the eGolf) it needed to start somewhere. The biggest issue for all these non-Teslas will be infrastructure related until the bugs get worked out of ElectricAmerica/Canada.
No one wins when the review is sugar coated. If the product is bad, an honest review is a gift to the manufacturer and to consumers. Volkswagen, an “Approved by Straight Pipes” label would carry a lot of weight with me.
I think the styling outside is outstanding, especially compared to a Tesla or Mach E. Unfortunate about the rest of it and VW is not famous for their reaction time in correcting things. I am not optimistic about getting an EV replacement for my GTI.
Thanks for the brutally honest review guys!. Still interested in the VW. There are some quirks. I drive a prius c right now and love it, so i'm probably dead inside.
I am one of those people who didn't know how to defrost windows until I was 26 years old and got my very first car. I used to think you just blow air on the windows with or without a/c
18:31 When Jakub puts it in Park there should be a screen popping up where you can select to keep the a/c running. At least that's what it does in Europe 🤔 (And yes there is a sensor in the seat)
I actually saw one of these on the road and I thought it looked really good but for me the turning off when you get out of the seat or try to back up would be a deal breaker. Also the rants are crucial they aren't getting too long
Yeah, being German myself, having been proud of good german car-engineering and as a owner of an Audi (VW-group) I would totally agree: what the hack came to their mind, when VW-developers created that UI? VW always was sort of the pinnacle of intuitiv operation. Tesla apparently made them feel completely insecure. They forgot about their strengths because of trying to be cool and modernistic. The non-backlighted touch-/sliderbuttons beneath the centerscreen tell it all. 2nd thing: where is the build quality?? VW always had quite nice materials built in their cars, now it feels definitely cheap (which it isn't at all!!). I don't mind, if they're not the cheapest competitor, but i do mind their attitude towards the customers: "Being expensive and feeling cheap is the future, so get over it!" No, I won't. The new Audis give me at least a little hope for better products in the future, though even they lost a bit of their famous build quality. But worst of all: EV's aren't competitive yet. Technically speaking I think they are a bet on the future, which will be electric anyway because of emission regulations. (BTW: Feeling any resemblance to planned economy, anyone?) EV certainly will evolve, but the development has just started, whereas right now petrol-fueled cars really are so sophisticated. So if you might consider buying an EV right now, you will have the same issue as with any PC: the best day to buy one is tomorrow, when specs will be better... I don't see myself buying an all electric car for the time being.

@@shawncarr9855 thank you for saying this. I actually hated this review ngl. They sounded misinformed tbh
I'm curious to know how sport focused one can make these two cars in the future by changing tires and rideheight (or suspension if the budget is there)
14:18 Yuri: please stop or VW is never going to send us another car
This review can be summarized in 14:02 😂 Yuris silence after his rant is speaks volumes. 26:22 🤣🤣 27:10 this review is too funny
The quality of your videos is so amazing! Keep it up guys!
"Yuri... it had a check engine light" lel
Team Jakub on the exterior styling. The wavy beltline is my biggest complaint. It makes the body sides look taller and puffier than they should. Visually, there's too much vertical distance between the beltline and the wheel well openings. I do appreciate your honest reviews, including both complaints and praise!
Pulling up with this bad boy to the Sundowner!!!!
Model 3 definitely isn’t a sports car😂
I just realized after 2 years of watching car reviews on RUclips that there are 2 different Canadian channels with 2 guys reviewing the cars. Wow
DUDE! I thought I was going crazy with how many times I hit my knee on the steering column
I just finished watching the Audi Q4 video and HAD to come watch this one based on how hard you bashed the ID4 😂
lmao me too
Same!
@18:57 🤣😂😅 the most dad thing I’ve ever seen these two do. Just watching jakub look inside through the window 😂😂 so adorable
Been obsessed with this channel recently. I think the ID4 design shines in other brighter colors. Black makes it bleh.
This rant was completely warranted, and honestly it was pretty refreshing.
Thanks for the brutally honest review guys!. Still interested in the VW. There are some quirks. I drive a prius c right now and love it, so i'm probably dead inside.
I’ll take 60 mpg in my Ioniq hybrid over 700 hp any day, your not dead your smart
been so busy with life, good to watcha straight pipes video for some normalcy
2021 VW ID.4: the official car of "just buy a tesla"
Love the honest rants and arguments, felt like a behind the scenes peak.
8:15 perfect description of the whole car
I support the actual automotive journalism you guys did here.
"Why does it start beeping?" - Jakub 2021
"I couldn't be bothered to learn how it works before making a video."
Most honest review of the I.D. 4 right now. Much respect!
These earlier ID cars are going to become props in masterclasses on "How not to do user interfaces" :(
Team yuri for logic , Team jacob for driving hard into cliche corner, and other features experimenting
The "Statement" they made with this package is "we're boring, overpriced and have unusable tech so you should buy a different EV" 🤣🤣🤣
I actually saw one of these on the road and I thought it looked really good but for me the turning off when you get out of the seat or try to back up would be a deal breaker. Also the rants are crucial they aren't getting too long
I love your videos soo much
I don't know why, but the music you played during the box test made me happy 😊🤷
Backstreet’s back, alright!
Beat me to it.
Can’t wait for you guys to review the F150 Lightning ⚡️
Really like the comment, except I'm so against waiting for EV perfection.
