Majora's Mask is the experimental hardware-pushing concept art game that we actually got! There are so many games in the Nintendo vault that are lost to time due to the fact that they were too ambitious or too weird to be made into a full game. To this day, the time mechanic and mask transformations still feel fully unique and original. In a terrible parallel universe, this game never came out.

I got majoras mask 3D and ocarina of time 3D for my birthday when they were released, I got them both at the same time so It must've been after they'd both came out in 2015. I didn't know which one to play first but I ended up playing majoras mask first, not sure why, I just did... I actually found the time feature really cool, and although near the end I had to resort to some guides because I got stuck, it was blast throughout. Then when I finished, I played ocarina of time. It was just at great but part of me felt it was more linear than majoras mask and I felt the story was just generic. Having played link between worlds prior. Obviously both games are equally good for their own reasons, ocarina of time is one of the most influential games ever made. But I still preferred majoras mask. I remember getting destroyed by the final boss and just taking a step back doing all the side quests and using the deity mask to destory the boss. It was so satisfying.

I've always preferred Majora's Mask compared to Ocarina, nothing wrong with either game but I feel the smaller setting makes the game feel more fleshed out and alive compared to the sometimes empty seeming OoT. My favourite entry is still Links Awakening though, I feel that game is just perfect imo

    • @joshz2491

Honestly the worlds comparatively speaking are about the same size. Even though there are only a few NPC’s in Hyrule field, that space has secrets nicely spread out while not being bloated to the point of annoying like Korik seeds and shrines were in BOTW. Each Zone in OOT is unique enough so that nothing feels to similar to something else. We call it small and empty nowadays because we are spoiled by open world games that are just naturally larger than OOT.
One thing I will always appreciate about OOT is that more than any other Zelda game, it is about Link and all the characters have a particular perspective of him. I also think OOT goes underrated narratively, it quietly speaks to the player about growing up and what happens when nature itself is disrespected.

My perspective over the years has consistently been that Majora's Mask is the better game, but only because it's standing on the shoulders of Ocarina of Time. The parallel world aspect that remixes familiar characters and themes is a huge part of its charm and appeal. If you remove the pedestal that Ocarina provides, MM falls a bit. If the two were unrelated games, each standing alone, I would give the crown to Ocarina.

This is a great take on this debate. Many of Majora’s Mask’s twists and inversions are best appreciated when you’ve played Ocarina first. That’s actually one of the reasons I like Majoras Mask so much-it has both a reverent and irreverent attitude toward it’s predecessor. The genius of that gets lost if the game stands on its own.

The thing is, Ocarina of Time's gameplay and story are both amazing. On the other hand, Majora's Mask has an amazing story (because it's built on Ocarina's rock-solid foundation, like you said) but its gameplay is tedious, frustrating and boring. If there's one thing Majora could do to be as good as Ocarina, it's stopping time when you're in a dungeon. Timers are literally never fun and there's nothing time-sensitive in the dungeons anyway. Interesting to hear your perspectives on the end of the story. Link basically shuffles off after saving Termina, uncelebrated and to no fanfare. He continues on his own personal journey to reunite with Navi, but it’s not explicitly clear that he succeeds in this. Knowing that the Hero’s Shade in Twilight Princess is the same Link from OoT/MM, does this mean that Link turned into a stalfos? According to the Kokori girl you can speak to in the Lost Woods in OoT during the trading quest, she says that anyone who gets lost in the woods will become stalfos. As is revealed in OoT, Link was actually a Hylian, so i guess that would apply to him also. Kind of sad to think that was his ultimate end.

It’s hard to call OoT “safe” when it broke the 3D mould and brought the world of Hyrule to life for the first time in such a way. It feels safe now because it’s common place. In the same way that Mario 64 seems “safe” now compared to Bowser’s Fury. But that could be said for Super Mario World, which many sites have argued is the best game ever made. At the time, I had ZERO idea what Majora's Mask was and that's what I got (since it was the new game, apparently the guy at the store told my family this is the one I would want). I started playing and got frustrated pretty quickly and was like "this is what EVERYONE LOVES?!" I got so frustrated and after 3-4 months playing this game, I put it down. My little brother wanted me to beat the game so bad, he loved looking at the game and was too young at the time to beat this. I knew I needed help so I went to go buy the guide. It still took me until JULY of 2001 to beat it. It was so grueling for me and just put it away.

Do I think Majora is.more polished than OOT from a technical and graphical perspective? Yes, I don't think anyone would deny that. But is it the better game between the two? No, I don't think so, the time mechanic is not bad, but does require too much specificity to appeal to the average player. Take away the sidequests and whats left for a main story is not particularly memorable. I know that over the years Majora isn't something that I've replayed nearly as much as OOT which in my eyes is a well oiled machine that still functions well 15-20 years later because every part of it has a genuine quality to it. Majora by contrast is like the flashy car you buy because you want to stand out but you really only take it out of the garage once in a while. You certainly have fun with it each time but it doesn't ride quite as smoothly as the other car that's older but has better made parts in it.

I disagree the main quest is amazing in my opinion and your point of taking a way the side quests is flawed because that is what game game is built around it would be like someone saying if you take the 3D out of Mario 64 it becomes a boring mess or something

Going to be honest, the time limit really killed Majoras Mask for me, my favorite thing to do in games is immerse myself in the world, and I just couldn't really do that in Majoras with having to keep track of the schedules, all the planning, speeding through stuff and all of that baggage with the time limit mechanic (even if it had a better atmosphere).

i'd say give it another shot, with the half time song, and the skip to the next time of day songs, it's really not that bad.
If anything it made me more focused, as i set goals for myself of what i would focus on in each cycle and ignore everything else.
Plus the atmosphere it creates once you enter the final 6 hours and the music starts playing is really intense.

Agreed. Majora's Mask was more frustrating than fun. I really hated the save system as well, the fact that you had to keep rewinding time to accomplish certain objectives. And I played it the way it was intended, on the N64.

And when I played them again as a teenager it was a fantastic experience, I could relive the endless hours I spent as a kid just wandering around Hyrule and Termina (the latter more than the first), not understanding a single thing but falling in love with the landscapes and characters, and the thing about Majora's Mask that makes it superior to me is the themes, the ambition that comes with the portrayal of such heartbreaking stories, is so much more engaging to an emotional level than OOT. Fantastic games I love with my life.

For me it's not so much a question of Ocarina of Time vs Majora's Mask as it is 3DS vs N64. If the Switch ends up running Majora's Mask on an N64 emulator, then I'll stick with the 3DS version. I don't like having to delete my owl statue saves every time I load them, nor being incapable of saving during the first time loop. Not only does the 3DS fix that problem, it also increases the number of save points via feather statues, which are basically owl statues minus teleportation. Then there are other huge improvements, such as a more intuitive bombers notebook and a Song of Double Time that lets you skip to any hour instead of just 6 AM or PM, as well as smaller improvements such as a seventh empty bottle and the ability to equip fire and ice arrows at the same time so that you don't need to pause quite as frequently in the Great Bay Temple. Also, there are two fishing holes, complete with time-transcending coupons.
Sure the N64 lets Zora Link swim quickly without consuming magic energy, and it lets Link check into the Stock Pot Inn without being a Gorgon, but that's 2 points for the N64 version, but at least 7 points for the 3DS version. Besides, Nintendo probably made that change because those original mechanics seemed "too easy," and I can't blame them for that. More importantly, not all points are created equal, and the massive improvements to the saving mechanic and to the Song of Double Time are enough for me to say "shut up and take my money" to the 3Ds version (if I hadn't already done so).
There are also some relocated side quests and rearranged side quest rewards, but my opinion on the differences is mostly neutral.

    - Link goes into the lost woods to find navi
    - Because link doesn't have Sarias blessing he becomes lost
    - it is canon that when a hylian gets lost in the lost woods they become a stalfos
    - Termina is the decent into becoming a stalfos
    - In Twilight Princess when being taught sword techniques you are greated by a Stalfos who is Link from MM

I might be in the minority but I'd have to give them a draw. The masks are alot of fun and side quests are amazing in majoras mask. Ocarina had better temples and bosses. I remember as a kid having to show my older family members how to beat the water temple. When they asked me about the great bay temple in majoras mask, my response was perfect timing lol. The great bay temple sucks Beyond belief. Majoras makes up for temples with side quest and of course stone temple. Ocarina had the greatness of the spirit temple and playing as an adult but majoras has masks and overall better character stories. I can't place one over another, I kind of think of them as one big game

I disagree. Aside from the Spirit Temple & Inside of Deku Tree, I found the dungeons in OoT and bosses to be the weakest in any 3D Zelda games. There not very unique & clever with the progression, layouts & puzzles. Some are piss easy to complete and others are absolutely tedious with it's gimmick & level designs. And the bosses are also piss easy. With the exception of Ganon, none of them puts up an decent challenge. It's simply just waiting and targeted there weakness.

Ocarina was long considered the greatest game ever made, and I still believe it’s top 5 for sure.
It’s now hip and cool to say it wasn’t that great after all and that an experimental game with a tight deadline (MM) or the open world one with shrines is so much better.
Ocarina is still the best to me, and I didn’t like MM all that much. It’s become more of a cult classic, as it wasn’t that well received back when it was released. It was good, but not the era defining game like ocarina. I do think ocarina has been beaten many times by so many that it’s become boring and is no longer hip to heap praise on.

    • @Alaneeeeee
      @Alaneeeeee 2 года назад

Ocarina was a genre defining game, monumental and awesome for its time. However, I think it has become harder to appreciate it as such over the years. It's a fantastic game no doubt and very enjoyable today, but compared to the hundreds of games it has influenced and even more modern Zelda games, I think it's easy to regard Ocarina as dated, and not as fresh as it once was.
Majora's Mask in the other hand, yes, it owes its DNA to Ocarina as every other 3D Zelda does, but it gives the formula its very own spin that also was revolutionary to time loop games and still to this day it feels just as new and shiny as the day it came out. There's not many games like Majora's Mask, not even in the Zelda series.
You will surely see the same thing happen in the future with BOTW. Old boomers like us will say that it was a revelation and that it was an instant classic, one of the best games ever made. And others will say that it wasn't that crazy compared to whatever games there are in the future.

As a kid I came from Ocarina of Time and wanted more so I jumped into Majora's Mask. There was things I liked but I got fustrated too quickly and I was disapointed by the Dungeons and the lack of Dungeons. I only got as far as the Great Bay Initially before I gave up. I cam back to it older, maybe 15 or 16 and I enjoyd it more. Like I learned it isn't about the dungeons and is about the side quests. I took my time and I basically followed the characters and kinda just learned everyones stories. I found it facenating and I went onto beat it but I was still fustrated because I was using a cheap knock of Wii Classic Controller and it was really bad and made the game hard as hell. But in 2020 I played it again on the Wii U. Since I had beat it before I had a guide for where the Heart Peices were if I needed it but I didn't rely on it. I just ook my time and soaked it all in and had an incrediible time. Like I can't even describe how much I loved the game. It went from my least favourite 3D Zelda game to perhaps my favourite. Never thought that was possible.

For me, it's because Majora's Mask is superb to Ocarina of Time in many ways. While Ocarina of Time may be more impactful and doesn't have the 3 day cycle gimmick & other things, I found getting quite bored with the game. Mainly because I found Hyrule to be mostly too spacies & empty, most of the dungeons and progression layouts are so bland & boring, the game can be wonky at times with the combat & other control schemes and the story or characters isn't near as interesting as I could've been. It also doesn't help that it borrows alot of aspects from Link to the Past, but couldn't accomplish than what Link to the Past so great to begin with. Majora's Mask fixes all that issue, while also trying something different that works well and that's why I think it's better.

It's a good game but stressful. But that stress is part of the games charm and time mechanic. It's what makes it MM. I have a theory about the three-way split timeline. It's obvious that the adult timeline (precursor to Wind Waker) created the child timeline (precursor to Twilight Princess) through the act of time travel, but the "hero is defeated" timeline (precursor to Link to the Past) sounds like a mere hypothetical, unless Majora's Mask created the third timeline.
Hyrule Hystoria does specify that all three splits happen immediately after Ocarina of Time (or during, if the hero is defeated), and that Majora's Mask is in the same timeline as Twilight Princess. But if you think about it, Majora's Mask takes place slightly earlier than half of Ocarina of Time, and seven years earlier than the other half. But Link remembers the whole thing, so it's effectively both before and after.
So how does it happen? We know that child Link tells Zelda everything he knows about Ganondorf's evil plan before he has a chance to execute said plan. We know this happens before Link goes to Termina, since she gave him the Ocarina of Time. But maybe Ganondorf's trial had to wait until after Link returned from Termina. When Ganondorf stands trial, Link is called to witness. If he's still alive to testify, then Ganondorf is banished to the Twilight Realm, and needs Zant's help to escape. But if Link died in Termina (as he did in all but the last time loop), then Ganondorf's charges are dropped, he walks free, then completely takes over Hyrule with nobody to stop him until the events of Link to the Past, several generations later.

    • @computernerd1101
      @computernerd1101 2 года назад

I know, the word of a time traveler regarding crimes that haven't happened yet hardly counts as incriminating evidence, but there are other witnesses to crimes Ganondorf already committed to which Hyrule Castle is oblivious enough to let Ganondorf play double agent.
Why does the court still need Link? Because the other witnesses are all too busy to come to court unless a subpoena forces them to do so, and Link is the only person in the courtroom who knows who to call. The Great Deku Tree is dead, so he can't even be subpoenaed, but there are three other witnesses who can. Darunia is busy trying to save his people from starvation, knowing that Ganondorf caused it by sabotaging Dodongo's Cavern. King Zora is busy treating Lord Jabu-Jabu's Ganondorf-inflicted illness, and looking for his missing daughter Ruto, who turns out to be inside Lord Jabu-Jabu. Nabooru knows that Ganondorf is evil, and probably has enough evidence to prove it, but she got cocky and tried to defeat Ganondorf herself, only to get captured and brainwashed by Koume and Kotake.

Honestly the whole 3 day mechanic is actually very simple to manage and cope with once you learn the inverted song of time.
To any new people to the game, go learn the inverted song of time (it’s just the song of time backwards, you don’t even have to “learn it” in game to work)
This slows down time and gives you more than enough time to do what you need to do.
The game wants you to “unlock” a dungeon by learning the Ocarina song for a specific dungeon, then all you do is reset to day 1, slow down time with the inverted song of time, and instantly warp to the dungeon now you’ve unlocked it
It’s really isn’t very tough or taxing at all once you understand the game mechanics. And as brilliant and unique as the mechanic is - it really is no where near as hard or complex as people make it out to be.
MM is an incredible game as is Ocarina. For me Ocarina wins out just simply because MM feels very short with only 4 dungeons.

Majora's Mask is a Fantastic story with amazing themes and a ton of well crafted Side quests. But at the very same time it is so unfun to play at times. The sense of dread is why some of us find it tense to play through it. Also the controls are not always suited for the situations you are in.

It's about time people acknowledged this simple truth.
I'm old so actually just finished another replay of Majora on the gold cart in my DK green N64 about a month ago... Majora's Mask is not just my favorite Zelda game, it's my favorite game overall. So much to do, and I refuse to save the day without getting the wedding in the ending (best side-quest ever, period).

    Who is more evil?
Majora possessed Skull Kid from Majora's Mask or Kefka from Final Fantasy 6.

I'll admit, my first Zelda game was the Windwaker, and I went play and played through OOT and when I played Majora's Mask, I was so confused at the three day time frame. I have multiple copies of the game, I just haven't got the time to play through it 🤣🤣

Ocarina of time is loads better, didn't like majoras mask as a kid and still don't like it as a adult, the time mechanic is stressful.
