I agree that the grandson actually did a great job with keeping up the standard. I moved to Clementi in 2008 and the grandfather was still frying; that was when I gave my personal thumbs-up to this carrot cake. I tried all three generations carrot cake and just as you have mentioned, I am pleasantly surprised that the grandson did a great job with upholding the standard.
I'm really glad that the grandson is willing to run and take over the stall. We've already lost a lot of iconic hawker stalls, hopefully this one stays for longer :)
Hi greg, do you happen to have the link to the video clip u showed at timestamp 1:02? Am interested in watching the full interview and wasn't able to find it on the specified channel. Thanks alot!
hi Gregory, you might also wanna check out at this same food centre Kian Seng's Lor Mee / Prawn Noodle / Laksa + Fong's Dee Curry Puff + Kee Hock's Beef Hor Fun...
I lived in Clementi for 5 years but sadly only ate there once cos weekdays go straight to work and I don't wake up early enough on the weekends and they'll be sold out by noon lol. Now that I've moved away, I miss it! Will definitely travel back for this
Hi Gregory, Since you came all the way to this market food centre, did you eat the Soon Lee porridge and the "You-Tiao"? Plus the "guo-tieh, shui-jiao and literally hand pulled la mian in the coffee shop next to it ? Plus the "Brothers Rojak" in another nearby coffee shop?
@@GregoryLeow it has been around for at least 5 years. It is rather unique in Singapore's coffee shop to have a real hand pulled la mian on the spot. I enjoyed their guo tieh and sui-jiao.
Brothers Rojak! The last time I had them was in 1998.. Been having then since my pri and sch school days where i would just go to clementi from west coast to tabao home..
Hi Greg. Another great food recommendation via your food channel. I have to go try this particular type of carrot cakes as i prefered the original type from the 60s' especially lard cooking version.
Where you would recommend a good homemade fried carrot cake stall? I used to patron toa payoh lor 7 market carrot cake stall but unfortunately the original owner has hand over the shop to another guy and I'm still unsure if it's good or not
Hi bro ! Went down clementi hawker give it try, both carrot cake(black & white) it was total 200% night-mare the food is super oily(still can accept) & super salty, no standard wasted time
This carrot cake is really nice. I didn't know their story/history as i only ordered from the grandson or someone younger. I prefer their white version.
First time i visited in Singapore 🇸🇬, they asked me if i liked to eat carrot cake i said yes! I like cake 🎂... then the give me this carrot cake. But its still yummy
The best carrot cake i have eaten is nestled at a corner of Blk 49 next to the Tanglin Halt Market, Peking Room coffeeshop accommodates three stalls - KL Pork Noodle by Old Village, Tanglin Halt Roti Prata & Nasi Briyani, as well as a Fried Carrot Cake stall. Mr and Mrs Chow have been in the business of selling fried carrot cake for the last 2 decades. Their carrot cake is first fried with seasoning (incl. butter), then coated with egg, and pan fried till lightly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Operating hours: 5am - 10am Closed from Mon - Wed Address: Blk 49 Tanglin Halt Road #01-365 Must try it before the demolition of blocks affected by SERS at end of 2021.
I grew up in Bukit Ho Swee in the early 70and have been eating the old man carrot cake at the old Tiong Bahru market. The old man kept his signature carrot cake in big chunks while his son shreds them to bits which is a shame.
@@woonchungliong4173 if i am right, OP is referring to Bukit Timah Food Centre, near Beauty World (right behind the hokkien mee stall). they only sell the white version.
The original Bukit Timah fried carrot 🥕 cake hawker is dead! Originator son is alive at Blk 504 Jurong West Hawker's Centre! The strange couple apparently doesn't open on Sundays as the little man has additional business as an illegal bookie! I don't like fried carrot cakes in Singapore anymore when they started chopping them into small bits. I've never like the white ones so stopped eating them with few occasions when I got to eat the ones in Malaysia.
could you have bought from wrong stall ? There are 3 chai Tao kueh stalls in this Clementi Market. The other 2 are cooked by ladies and one of them is awful

Both versions full of wok hei. Soon Lee Heng Chai Tow Kuey at Clementi West market is very good too.
