@@honestplacesYou can visit the tower in Jaywick I think it's a quid to get in.. maybe you could have spotted a half decent boozer from the roof😊 plus the reason the tower looks rough at the mo they are doing work on the sea defences it's costing millions.. 😊
I grew up in Jaywick. Moved around a bit but settled back in Clacton. It was/is a bit of a shithole, with drug and alcohol problems as you'd expect from an economically deprived area. I was very young and so most likely oblivious to a lot of other things but I can't say my family ever had any real problems there. I think most people are nice enough and try to get by as best they can. I feel like I've been to equally as bad places elsewhere in the UK. Hell I lived in Mansfield for a while. That place was grim.
You can really see how it used to be a "getaway" location. Small houses right next to the ocean, thin paths but you can imagine it bustling with people on holiday enjoying the summer. Such a shame how it's ended up and seemingly been forgotten about by the local councils. Potential there for sure. Hopefully one day some very rich person goes and changes it all for them.
And yet still, I bet nearly all “normal” people would still feel much, much more safe and unthreatened being out after midnight in Jaywick than they would on ANY estate/inner-city area in London. But of course it’s “insensitive” to talk about that nowadays 🤔.....
Nice vids. 1991 to 1998 i lived in clacton , used to go to jaywick a lot , it was worse then ,it was called a shanty town and them towers are called martello towers. Quite a few of em spread along the coast . Next to jaywick is St Osyth. They have nudist beach. Just sayin....

And yet, all of the sympathy and outreach initiatives designed to combat poverty seem to be concentrated on areas where the St George flag never flies.
They should try flying the flag of the true English Anglo-Saxon saints: St Edmund and/or St Edward the Confessor. Not this Norman imposed foreign Saint George. Cap toffing to the Norman elites will get you nowhere.

Try somewhere like merthyr, or even some of the out of the way townships in north Wales, like well away from the touristy parts. That might be an eye opener..
It is a Martinez Tower and there is a string of them all along the south coast to maybe portsmoufh? To keep Napoleon at bay. Many have been turned into homes - i know the one in Dymchurch, kent. Some just left like this one.
Back in the 70's we had a family friend who owned one of these chalets in Hillman ave remember having holidays there. Just around the corner was a pub called the Mermaid inn ( closed down now ) which was ok back then. I've been back there a couple of times due to work back in the early 2000's and couldn't believe how run down the place had become.

Your vids are always really interesting. I've moved away from the UK, been away about 14 years now, but every time I see a video like this I can't help but feel a little depressed at how bad some places have become.
In the 80's at Leeds Poly half a dozen of us used to crawl round the city pubs. One night down a dimly lit ginnel we saw a gloomy looking pub. It took a while to convince everyone to venture in. In we went, three or four "gangster types" sat at the bar. They couldn't believe six students had the balls to go in, but were really pleased we had. Had a smashing hour with them. The Whip!

I reckon somewhere along the line society lost the plot.
Awesome vlog as always my friend 👍
Good read that pal. Alot of people don't like to put effort in anymore. I admire your dedication 👍
The opening shots were of travellers' homes and that pub serves travellers who have been barred from other pubs for fighting (I haven't seen them fighting in there to be fair)
Didn't know that 😬😬

That's a Martello tower. They're all around Ireland's east coast as well.
I love them
@@honestplacesYou can visit the tower in Jaywick I think it's a quid to get in.. maybe you could have spotted a half decent boozer from the roof😊 plus the reason the tower looks rough at the mo they are doing work on the sea defences it's costing millions.. 😊
Ive seen far worse places. Bet there are a lot of decent folk there.
Me too. Yeh they are always decent folk 👍
Some of the buildings look decent, i noticed one with a cracking big balcony
You can really see how it used to be a "getaway" location. Small houses right next to the ocean, thin paths but you can imagine it bustling with people on holiday enjoying the summer. Such a shame how it's ended up and seemingly been forgotten about by the local councils. Potential there for sure. Hopefully one day some very rich person goes and changes it all for them.
I love watching you, you defo give off Karl Pilkington vibes!!!
Still dunno how to take that 🤣
It’s definitely a compliment,. Your a say it as it is, dry sense of humour., down to earth bloke. You make me laugh!
@@Ferret247 well cheers pal. appreciate that
Haha I get the same vibe
Think it’s the head like an orange and the Accent
And yet still, I bet nearly all “normal” people would still feel much, much more safe and unthreatened being out after midnight in Jaywick than they would on ANY estate/inner-city area in London.
But of course it’s “insensitive” to talk about that nowadays 🤔.....
100% mate. I'm in the center of london this weekend and will deffo feel more on edge
Nice vids. 1991 to 1998 i lived in clacton , used to go to jaywick a lot , it was worse then ,it was called a shanty town and them towers are called martello towers. Quite a few of em spread along the coast . Next to jaywick is St Osyth. They have nudist beach. Just sayin....
Nudist beach? Here in the uk?? Jeez....reminds me to buy some button mushrooms.
Even though Jaywick has a reputation to be fair everywhere Up and down the UK has elements Of this Now .Our Government Chose to Ignore this Problem Many Years ago and Sweep It Under the Carpet When Most Of Us Had Seen It Coming .The Powers that Be Should Be Forced to Watch Your Videos 👍
Yeh Jaywick just gets a bad rep. As you say alot of the UK is the same 👍
A Napoleonic Martello tower, part of a chain of similar towers around the south east coast.
Proper well built them 👍
@@honestplacesShould've popped down to Point Clear, another dump with a boozer (The ferry boat inn) right next door to a Martello Tower that has a air museum in. I've never been inside that pub not as brave as you😂
@@honestplaces I think there are five Martello towers in the Clacton area.. Point Clear to Clacton Pier..
Watching out for small boats then
The Martello tower at jaywick is well worth a visit £1.00 entry fee.
4:58 you can’t say there’s no investment in property. That owner clearly has an environmental mindset - the amount of solar panels on that roof could run half of Jaywick - can’t think why else he’d need such a large coverage ?
Since you're in Essex. Please consider coming to Suffolk, visit Ipswich. Or maybe some of our villages.
Summer i will be 👍
Be limited to rubbish places in Suffolk, Lowestoft and Ipswich thereafter a lovely county

i live about 7 miles away and remember a time when the "houses" in jaywick were up for sale as buy one get one free
Some of those houses dont look bad to be fair, shame the council cant tidy it all up a bit, least you got a Guinness!
Nah, just needs abit of tlc the whole area. Guinness was suprisingly ok
Nah council help only migrents
I've delivered to Jaywick several times. Really friendly people.

You do realise St George was a foreigner😂😂?
@@OfficialSP7I believe he does, that’s why he suggested supporting St Edmund.

I bet that fella gets great wifi.
Try somewhere like merthyr, or even some of the out of the way townships in north Wales, like well away from the touristy parts. That might be an eye opener..
Yeh alot of people keep saying that area!
It is a Martinez Tower and there is a string of them all along the south coast to maybe portsmoufh? To keep Napoleon at bay. Many have been turned into homes - i know the one in Dymchurch, kent. Some just left like this one.
Deffo a nice touch keeping them as is 👍
Martello tower not matinez
Back in the 70's we had a family friend who owned one of these chalets in Hillman ave remember having holidays there. Just around the corner was a pub called the Mermaid inn ( closed down now ) which was ok back then. I've been back there a couple of times due to work back in the early 2000's and couldn't believe how run down the place had become.
So sad to see went to jaywick in the 60s family holidays beach great used to walk along the front into Clacton well to the fair outside butlins if we were lucky go to pier the steel Stella and visit Walton on naze Happy memories
We used to go there when I was a kid in the 60's, because it was all my parents could afford. Although we had little money we always had a good time, and fond memories of Jaywick.
There’s worse places about than jaywick. I visited there a few years ago and found the people friendly. Would be nice if the council put some money into the area though.! 👍
Yeh there are. The folks are sound like most places. But as you say even just abit of money would do wonders
I’d visit jaywick again no problem 👍
Tendring Council never seemed to have enough money for anything
Yes. Our council is the same😳
Get in, was only hoping for a lunchtime drink!! Nice one, you're a natural at this mate, brilliant.
Cheers pal, really appreciate it 👍
Have a few pints in the Never Say Die pub walk the short distance to the sea look across and if you’re feeling fit you can swim over to Margate
Essex to Kent across the estuary

Ill let you do it instead😂😂
Great vid.
Looks a nice spot , £3.50 sounds good price , I live in Ireland and if you go to Dublin to the temple bar area you can pay up to €10 for a pint of Guinness
Brilliant vids pal loving them , why don’t you see what’s cracking off down the wirral area I live in Chester way but loads of pubs and dodgy estates round certain places in Wirral 👊🏼
It aint far from me that. Deffo a shout. Cheers pal
It doesn`t look very diverse around there.........Perfect!!

Hi great videos what do you use to old your go pro to backpack 🎒 thanks.

The Whip!

Good luck trying the Hare and Hound for a pint, has been a wedding dress shop for about 10 years. Though a little walk along Norwich road in Ipswich will show you a rough old street, with randomly one lovely department store (coes) bang in the middle.
Is St Jude’s on Norwich road, which you won’t get Guinness at but lots of cask ales, however only open in the evening.

Jaywick definitely has character and probably has some proper unique people too. I love those old holiday chalets. My home town in Devon had them, until they were bulldozed for luxury apartments.
