Wild Turkey is a sour Mash. A lot of whiskies that don't specifically state it, are sour mashes.
i agree, i think most bourbons are sour mash, i recall only a few do sweet mash like hard truth, wilderness trail and peerless
I believe unless it states “Sweet Mash” like Hard Truth stuff, it’s presumed to be sour mash, whether stated on the label or not.
Is there any advantage to a sour mash? I would assume quality would be better with a sweet mash as you're not re-using ingredients?
@@coolzog It's all about controlling fermentation. Years ago when sanitation practices in distilleries were not quite what they are today, using the sour mash process was a way to lower the pH of the mash to help prevent bacteria contamination while providing conditions more favorable for the yeast. Now, like so many other things in whiskey-making, it's largely just tradition. A lower pH will likely have some impact on what compounds are produced during fermentation, but it's hard to determine if someone would be able to tell the difference in the final product of sweet mash vs. sour mash after distillation and several years of barrel aging.
Got both this year. Didn’t love them at fresh crack but man at a couple weeks of open time…whole different ball game.
Good to know, excited to see how they shape up after being open for a while! Thanks for the info!
Hope they get better, we just got them last week, haven't opened them yet so might just crack them and then let them sit a while.
I had the same experience with my 24A barrel strength. On first crack it was just charcoal, after just a week it had already become one of my favorite pours. Super complex and great dark fruit/chocolate/oak
@@slbdrinks Would love to see a re-visit episode in that case!
@@slbdrinksy’all should either just straight re-review them in a couple weeks, or maybe try to throw them into a blind after a few weeks!
I’ve only recently gotten deeper down the bourbon/whiskey road, got my first Shenk’s (at the store, was like $110). Was super excited to get it, waiting for my brother to fly into town next month to crack it open and try with him. Even if it’s not the best release from them ever it’ll be a fun pour/experience to share
I know that it may be difficult to resist the urge to pour a we dram, but I just to ramp up your drinking experience you might consider cracking it now and letting it air out for a half hour or so then just cork it back up until your brother can come by. Just to let it to open up to it's full potential.
I tried the 2024 Bombergers. It was very good to me. Maybe because my bottle had been opened for a bit. Have yet to try the Shenks.
I love Michters Barrel Strength Rye (2024) and Toasted Rye from 2023. This is the first yr I have gotten Bombergers and Shenk. And after cracking these I learned that I’m just a f’n Michters profile geek.
The Toasted Rye Barrel strength is one of my favorite all time bottles
All of their Ryes are right on the money. Especially the 10yr and the toasted. I have tried a lot of ryes and have to say Michters stays in my top 3.
Shenk's is $110 in Virginia. Bomberger's is $120. For these prices, I'm looking for something distilled by the people that put the label on.
$20 mark up from msrp isn't bad. I am also a HUGE fan of every Bombergers release I've ever tried. I live in southern MD and travel into VA quite often for the abc pricing, especially now that they revamped the allocated system.
Thanks for the review! Wish you would have pulled the Shenk's and Bomberger's from the shelf right behind you to compare!
I get every year of Bombergers...they never disappoint. The Shenks on the other hand....felt very thin and flat. That will be going with me to the next bottle share lol.
I bought the 2023 Shenks and Bombergers. Was not impressed with the Shenks at first but it vastly improved within a couple of months after opening. The Bombergers did as well. This is generally the case with many whiskey's on my shelf.
You boys saved me some money today. I spent about the same on a 1792 Sweet Wheat and it is excellent.
Sweet Wheat is supposed to cost $39, which is what I paid for it. Guess it depends on where you are.
How much was your sweet wheat? I got mine at retail. $45ish if i remember right
@@jj18057 Well he said it cost about the same as the Bomberger's and Shenk's, so probably close to $100. Hard to find the Sweet Wheat though, you got a great price.
@@jj18057nice score if it was retail! It’s hard to find good bottles at retail anymore!!
I asked for this video a while back. So happy you made it! Thanks
I like sweetness in bourbon if it is balanced with some other flavors - richness, spiciness, oakiness, and even a mild amount of tannic bitterness. When bourbons are primarily just sweet, I find them to be thin and watery, even at higher proofs. Additional: In Seattle, they are $160+. I will spend that on a single malt, but I can't see myself spending that much on most bourbons.
I've only had Bombergers 2019&2023. The Shenks I've only had 2023. I absolutely luv them. ShenkBerger is the best 2 bottle blend I've had.
Grabbed the Bombergers for the higher proof the other day. Really like it.
Looking to grab one of these, but having second thoughts now. Thanks for sharing guys.
I do the roll too over the SJ. Just being delicate with the pour
I just picked up a 24 Shenks but have yet to crack it. The 23 Shenks was like a Strawberry Cream profile to me…. Very good!
Hey guys love your videos. My collection is growing, up to 27 bottles. How long are they good after cracking them open?
With proper storage an open bottle can stay good for several years. 🙂
I paid $120 for this years Shenks and I'd pass on another bottle at that price, I paid $139 for Bombergers and ended up buying a backup bottle. Bombergers is in the top 5 bottles i've had this year: very balanced, just the right amount of oak, and at 108 proof it's a very roubust sip without being overly hot.
I got the bottle this weekend, I am a big fan of the Shenk’s this year. I agree, it’s not their best release but still a great pour.
I got lucky at my local grocery store when asking for allocated stuff. Thanks for the review. Looking foward on a revisit review if opening up helps.
wait everything except the M25 rye, meaning Trenton is sitting on M20B, M25B, and celebration?! :OOO do I smell a review in the future?
In Jersey both are normally $150-$200. Many of the gouging retailers price at $250+. pass. Thanks guys.
i got mine this year in NJ for (bombergers) 129.99
There is not a single michters product that states “Distilled by Michters” on it anywhere. All of their bottles say “bottled by”. This makes me think none of it is distilled by them, but I’ve heard from many sources that Trent is correct in saying the core four is distilled by Michters.
My understanding is the only product that Michters distilled in-house is the Fort Nelson label.
Even the base products say “bottled” by but do not say distilled by.
@@lrbtechie even the fort Nelson bottles say “bottled by”. Those aren’t theirs either it seems
forget whiskey. let's talk about things that really matter. Ive got two boys of my own, but they are ages 5 and 1 1/2. I hope I can keep relationships with them as close as you have with your sons when they grow up. clearly, youve done a heck of a job as a dad.
Would love to see a follow up after you let them open up. Even just a short or something
I did get a '24 Shenk's but no Bomberger's. I got both in '23. I preferred the Shenk's last year and still have a lot left. I do think they need to open and found both better a few weeks after opening. With that, I'll probably crack this one and try a neck pour and then let it sit for a while. Thanks for the review!
We have Hot Mustard in SC!
Cheers!
Nice review! I really like the 2023 Shenks! Even being lower proof Michters products are such a rich, bold, viscous, and full of flavor! Cheers!
Love my batch of Bomberger’s 2024. Extremely viscous and fruity with a slight bit of oak. I know these can vary by batch. My batch is 24F2277
I was lucky enough to try the 2021 Bombergers you brought to the meetup and it was fantastic. If these would all taste like that, I’d be a buyer every year.
Good stuff fellas. Try them both in a week, hopefully they open up for sure. Cheers
Thanks for the video. I was thinking of over paying for these but I’ll just keep an eye out for something closer to MSRP. Love you guys!
2023 Shenk’s is incredible. Didn’t love my 2023 Bomberger’s at first crack, but liking it a lot now.
I haven't tasted 2024 Shenk's yet but have the 2024 Bomberger's and enjoy it. Need to stack up against 2023 and 2022 releases.
2023 Shenks might be hard to beat.
@TMExtremeOutdoor 💯 since this year's Shenk's is a different mashbill if I recall. I actually prefer 2022 over 2023 but they were both darn delicious.
I toured mitchters production facility and was told it’s their own distillate from their master of maturation. It was contract distiller at one point, but she indicated even the 10 year bourbon and rye were their own juice now. So seems as though around 2010 or so they started distilling.
The first Bombergers I had was 2017, I believe. It was the first year Michters started using the label. There was no year on the bottle. Might be my favorite bourbon ever. Bought several bottles and gave most of them away. Also got a 2018. Not as good, but still good. Haven't seen on here in St Augustine since. Well, I did see one for $150+ or something, I believe. I paid under $50 for those 2017 bottles!
1000% agree...hot mustard was the best!
Shenks and Bombergers usually need time to open up to air out a bit. They are pricey but I still enjoy them.
Yeah I would lean toward clarifying this is a fresh crack review and intend to go back on it because this is going to warrant it.
I was able to get this year's and last year's! I liked last year's better but I thought this year was good and I am glad I was able to.get them. I am a big Michters fan. Now I heard but cannot confirm that they source from old forester.
I picked up a Bombergers and really liked how it started but not how things developed from there. I’m not good enough to identify specific notes but Kurt’s “bitterness” seems about right
They do distill some at their downtown location, but most is at another location in Louisville not available to the public. Many of their allocated bottles are sourced, but nothing has been confirmed by Michter’s.
Bought Shenks 109 and Bombergers 129
They weren’t great at first but man after 2 weeks those opened beautifully.
I got one of the shenks but couldn’t find the bomburgers I still haven’t opened mine yet though
My favorite time of year, when all the semi or annual releases come out that i'll never see or ever get a chance to taste so I watch whiskey tubers tell me how awesome they are. cheers
You guys are the BEST - but, you should look up what a sour mash actually is 😉
I remember hearing mgp sourced them “they’re own special distillate”
I’ve never seen these out there and have never tried them.
Do a blind with the 90 proof versus the new JB7, Buffalo Trace, and a fourth 90-proof option. Is this worth almost 4 times the cost of the others? I can’t answer that because I’ve never had these. But I’d be curious to watch.
Inflation doesnt impact much at all, it's 90% price gouging.
The 2023 set was pretty nice. Gonna have to keep an eye out for the 2024 set.
I was able to get the 24 Shenk’s but haven’t cracked it yet but look forward to see if get the same result
2 prime candidates for the "did it get better video"
I’m fairly new into all this, like maybe a year, but I had no idea what these were, you guys should do a blind of the past couple years and see if your review holds up well
Talking about people who don’t like sweet bourbons, my wife hates sweet whiskey like Buffalo trace or wild Turkey, she loves beam. Knob creek specifically, so the deeper more dark flavors
I wish they weren't listed at $279 outside the hour they last at TW
Oh no, Dawn and I just got both last week when she was down in Louisville for the Bourbon Women's Siposium, we got the 10 yr Rye also, Haven't opened either one of these yet, so now I'm worried. Reading over the comments, it looks like many have found it greatly improves after it has been opened, so fingers crossed. The 10yr Rye was good, not great, but then neither one of us are big Rye fans. Let us know how you like it after it sets (and for how long you let it set).
I got 2 Shenk’s and 1 Bombergers from 2023. Both phenomenal IMO. Shenk’s was slightly better to me. My buddy went by Michter’s last month and surprisingly they had 2023 Shenk’s and Bombergers that he picked up for me. Glad they were the 2023. I haven’t heard as good of reviews for the 2024.
Really like my 2024 Bomberger's. There are different batches each year.
Kurt, you should go back. They have hot mustard. At least we do in Ohio, and I get it in Kentucky as well when I'm there.
Readily available in FL as well
Haven’t run into either of these in my adventures over the last few years.
McD hot mustard was 🔥
still is, at least the one by me still has it...
I agree with Kurt, a little sweet is good
Hot mustard is back at McDonald’s. At least in the Indianapolis area. Had it on my nuggets a few weeks ago.
I do not regret getting these for MSRP luckily
Fundip takes me back to the good old days at the ballpark. I love Michter's straight rye. In Florida, i haven't been able to find any of those unique releases.
Total wine had them available online. All the grocery chains got them
This whiskey, more than any other, needs air. I almost threw out my first Bombergers but put it on a shelf for a year and it turned out to be outstanding.
Guys you own it to the PEOPLE be real if it’s not good be real about it don’t play into the destilliertes.. like $110 for a bottle is ALOT OF MONEY! for okay whiskey 🤷♂️
Man, y'all really should've read up on this years releases on the Michter's page, they give some nice detail for each year of both whiskeys in the page notes. I've not tasted the 2024s yet, but they began including some bourbon with malted rye in the mash of last year's Bomberger's and that continued this year for both Shenk's and Bomberger's.
Bomberger's is a straight KY bourbon partially aged in Chinquapin Oak (experimented with different toast & char levels over the years)
Shenk's is a high-rye sour mash whiskey that has seen some barrels each year aged in either French or Chinquapin Oak
I've generally found Shenk's to be more interesting but both have been consistently good whiskey to me.
Was the sound really low or just me?
I got the old 2021 and 2022 releases. Still sealed waiting for a rainy day. My bourbon backlog is getting out of control at this point.
I really enjoyed the Bomberger's 2023 version I just picked up so this is disappointing to hear. But glad I watched this!
Last years Shenks was really good. I was lucky enough to get two bottles.
2024 bomb burgers was much better than either 22 or 23. I passed on the shanks due to the rise in its retail price. I also have not very good reviews on the shanks but very positive reviews on the bomb burgers.
I have a Michters 10 that I’m less than impressed with. Interesting to hear some of their other products are sub par as well.
Shenks is a $50 whiskey max and always has been imo. I do like bombergers a lot imo.
It's unfortunate that it's not up to the same standards of the past , was never able to score either bottle in the past at a fair price.
They change slight variables in both of these every year to test things out. That’s why they are different from year to year
Do you have prior year Bomberger's and Shenk's to compare them? Was last year's better?
Who is the distiller?
Most Michter’s products are contract distilled or sourced.
Total wine in Florida has shenks for 125 and bombergers for 135. Too rich for me
Wait, I’ve seen the video with the M20 but Trent said he has *every* Michter’s outside M25 rye - does that include the unicorn of all unicorns, Celebration?
Can you review Calumet bourbon please
The 15 and 16 year bourbons are both terrific. If you find em at Costco it's a steal
Thanks!
Hidden gems - I overpay at least once a year for a bottle of Shenks. I’ve never tried the Bomberger (yet). My only complaint is the lack of info (aka transparency) on the Shenks label.
McDonald’s Hot Mustard was the best sauce for chicken.
Had the shenks just the other day and wasn’t impressed for the price. Very good but 90 proof at that cost is a no for me.
In my local store, both of them sold for $130 instantly 😂I'm missed them twice. But is $130 worth to buy?
There ya go, next video. Blind the older ones with these
As is way too common in the current bourbon market, another overpriced underwhelming limited release. Glad a few distillers are focusing on great whiskey at a solid price like Bardstown with the origin releases
I've heard that Michter's is using Old Forester as the source of some of their bottles.
Just opened the Bombergers the other night. I thought it was excellent. Drinks way below its proof. Lots of chocolate.
Michigan still has hot mustard.
I have the 2019 Shenk's and the 2023 and they are fantastic. I've heard that the Shenk's 2024 is completely different from previous years. Trust me, I had nothing to do with it! ; )
Bombergers MSRP for 2024 is 120. Shenks is $110. Both are elevated over last year.
Bought the 2023 Shenks a couple of weeks ago, the 2024 wil probably not be avalible here in Norway for another 6-7 months.
Norway in the house!!!
Msrp is 100 for Shenk's and 120 for Bomberger's
Like the Michter's US 1 Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey for $45.
