12 Days of Unrivaled Beauty & Adversity: Peru's Huayhuash Trek | Silent Hiking

- Опубликовано: 17 июн 2024
- Join us on a breathtaking journey through the stunning landscapes of the Cordillera Huayhuash in the Andes mountains of Peru, a 12-day trek that's nothing short of a bucket list adventure. Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of one of the world's most captivating treks, where glaciered peaks over 6000m (20,000ft) high pierce the sky, and turquoise and azure lakes glisten like gems.
But for us, this trek was more than just a scenic expedition. We faced and conquered adversity head-on. Amidst the staggering heights and serene lakes, we overcame severe illness that nearly ended the trek before it started. Worse yet, we faced unexpected racism on the trail. However, we did not let this stop us from having the adventure of a lifetime.
Over the course of 12 days, we did a loop around this legendary mountain range, covering an incredible 125km (85 miles), ascending over 5500m (18,000ft) in elevation, including two passes of over 5000m (16,400ft). Each step brought a vista that was more beautiful than the previous.
Witness the Andes Mountains of Peru as you've never seen them before, as we share our silent video capturing the grandeur of the mountains, the serenity of the lakes, and the triumph of the human spirit.

Huayhuash is the most incredible trek we've done so far, but it was not without its challenges. What's the best trek you've been on? What hikes are on your bucket list?
Salkantay trek with you guys!:D
@@GibiTravels Aww! Yes, excellent trek! Not many treks culminate with one of the Seven Wonders AND have an amazing high altitude pass. AND a coffee plantation. AND hot springs! AND, of course, amazing new hiking buddies!!
@@MEOWnderlust definitely! I can’t wait for the next trek! Need to build stamina up im high elevation and altitude and meet you guys somewhere around the world! :))
@@GibiTravels Looking forward to it!
YOUR WORK IT`S STUNNING, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL
🙏Thank you for watching and the nice comment! We're glad you enjoy it!❤️
Absolutely wonderful
Cheers!🙏 This was an absolutely wonderful trek. The Peruvian Andes are amazing!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
да, сверху виды потрясающие!
This trek has some of the most spectacular views we've ever seen!
@@MEOWnderlust я давно мечтаю о съемке с квадрокоптера!
We hope you have the opportunity!
without a doubt this will be my destiny one day
You will not be disappointed! It is amazing! Thanks for watching and commenting🙏
This is lovely, thank you, takes me back to when I hiked this trail last year.
We've seen your Huayhuash video! Your videos are inspiring, so your comment means a lot to us! Thanks for watching and commenting!!🙏
Great video! Raw, unfiltered, and silent. Your bits of humor here and there are really appreciated. I laughed out loud at "Obligatory Drone Opening". Your own music fits this so well. Keep up the great work!
🙏 Much appreciated! We're so glad you liked the video (and the humor)!
Thank you for the video! I recently did a 10 day variation of the Huayhuash trek (August 2023), and had a similar experience, being very sick the first two days, and then again on day 7 and 8, when I needed to ride the horse. I also met the cat at Carhuacocha, who posed on a rock in front of the lake as the sun was rising. It was such a beautiful cat, and after posing for the picture, it came over and rubbed against me. I'm sorry to hear of your negative experience with the other couple.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Congrats on completing the Huayhuash trek, especially when you had to overcome not 1, but 2 illnesses! Way to perservere!! It's a beautiful corner of the world, isn't it? We're so glad to hear the Carhuacocha cat is still spreading his magic!! Thanks for the kind words!!
hermosa experiencia. y que lindo que hayan disfrutado de esos hermosos paisajes del Perú
La Cordillera Huayhuash es increíble y Perú es un país tan hermoso. ¡Gracias por mirar y comentar!
What a journey! Such beauty. Sorry you had to deal with that bs from another couple. Glad you guys persevered. Happy trails!
Cheers! It certainly was an unexpected challenge. Regardless, it was an amazing experience overall.
What a breath taking and arduous hike with such beauty and adversity. Words can’t adequately express what i feel and what emotions and grandeur must of been going on during your journey. I felt being right there with you. Thank you for posting this amazing video. Everyone should view it and take in this simple but complex hike. I salute you best yet
🙏 Cheers! Our goal is to create an immersive experience that makes you feel like you're on the hike, so we're very happy to hear that! Huayhuash is truly a spectacular trek.
What a awesome video. The film quality and cinematography are on another level.
Thanks for the kind words! We're glad you enjoyed it!
I certainly enjoyed this Hike that you guys did! Wonderful shots of the views, landscapes, mountains, and wildlife! Don't let the negativity ruin the experience of your hike. :) It makes me want to go to this place, although it's a 12 days trek! haha :D
We're glad you enjoyed it! We will forever have positive memories of this amazing experience, but we won't be able to completely forget the negativity either. Unfortunately, you can't always have amazing hiking buddies like the ones in Salkantay! If you do visit Cordillera Huayhuash, there are certainly shorter treks that you can do. Thanks for watching and commenting!!🙏
Waoo hermoso ,yo también lo voy hacer este año o el próximo Quizás
¡Esperamos que puedas hacerlo! ¡Es tan increíble!
what a wonderful hike and video, it's on my plan as well :)
🙏 Thank you for watching and commenting! We hope you have the chance to do this hike soon. You will love it!!
It's amazing how you can show me sides and views of my own country that I never thought were possible. The cinematography is top notch and inspiring as a fellow creative soul. That said, I watched the video with a sense of impending doom because of the subject of racism, which is a problem I have experienced myself too when traveling abroad (particularly in Europe). I just hope the couple wasn't Peruvian, since that's the vibe I got from the initial presentation of the video/thumbnail.
Thank you for watching and for your thoughtful words! We are sorry that you had to experience racism during your travels. It is such an ugly side of humans. Also, sorry for giving you a feeling of dread while watching the video. To be clear, the couple were not Peruvian (they were from my home country). In fact, all the Peruvians we have met during our travels have been amazing people! We love Peru and hope to return many more times!
@@MEOWnderlust Thank you for the clarification. It sounds shallow but it was a huge relief for me. We Peruvians don’t have a lot to offer so we pride our ourselves on our hospitality (and food!).
Besides my personal feelings about the difficult topic of racism, the video is so beautiful that I keep showing it to friends to showcase my country. It truly makes me proud and I am beyond thankful to you for sharing your unique art with us.
@@Aiyoukim I totally understand and am glad you can breathe a sigh of relief! Thanks again for your kind words, and for sharing this video with your friends. It means a lot to us. Peru is an amazing country and should be on every traveler’s bucket list! Breathtaking scenery, world-class hiking, interesting cities, friendly people, rich culture, delicious cuisine… You have a lot to be proud of!
Excelente video
¡Muchas gracias!🙏
Hi, great video! I loved the footage and story telling. I’m sorry to hear there were some not so good experiences along the way. I had a question about how you kept your drone usable along the whole trip. How many batteries did you carry? Was there any opportunities along the way to recharge so you could still fly on the later days? Seems like there was a town stop along the way.
Thanks for watching and the kind words! We're glad you enjoyed the video. We took 6 drone batteries, 12 camera batteries and 2 power banks, though we couldn't use the banks to charge the drone batteries. So, we budgeted roughly half a drone battery per day of the trip, though we didn't fly it every day. There was one town stop, which actually wasn't on our original itinerary, so we didn't have our drone charger. Are you planning to do the Huayhuash trek?
Amazing cinematography!! What’s your camera set up??
🙏🙏 Much appreciated! 🎥 Our primary camera is the Panasonic Lumix GH6 (love it!). Most of the film was shot with a Lumix 12-35mm f/2.8 lens with VND filter, with some Leica 9mm f/1.7 and Lumix 35-100mm f/2.8 mixed in. We use the camera's Natural color profile and color grade/edit in FCPX, though we might make the leap to Log recording for our next project. 🎤 RODE VideoMic Go II mic, though wind made it hard to get audio. 🚁Drone shots are from the DJI Air 2S w/ ND filter.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@MEOWnderlust That is some serious bi of kit!! Don't know a lot of people who use a leica for youtube content haha
😁Sometimes I wonder why we bring so much gear hiking. It certainly doesn't make it any easier!
@@MEOWnderlust well your content is bloody beautiful so has some advantages haha 😂
🙏 Cheers!
Best trek yet was Laufavegur in Iceland. Bucket list is Three Passes in Nepal coming up in October.
Nice! We're jealous! Both of those hikes are on our bucket list. We have a few more in South America to conquer first though. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Annapurna full circuit trek is one of the best too, despite road construction....
Nice! That one is definitely on our bucket list. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
@@MEOWnderlust I remember my Huayhuash.....2012!
@@doussotchristophe9411 I bet it hasn’t changed much since then
Nicely done. Takes me back to my 1980 climbing trip in Quebrada Rurek near Huantsan. Wonderful to keep it free of spoken commentary and the addition of drones is a big plus.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words! We're glad you enjoyed the format of the video. We do our best to capture the natural beauty and create an immersive viewing experience. The Huaraz area certainly has some of the most beautiful trekking we've encountered in South America. It's hard to do it justice!
Great video guys, really enjoyed it, I'll let trekking there in March. As someone that lived in japan for 2 years and has a lot of close Japanese friends I was sad to hear the comments on racism - I hope it didn't spoil the trip or tarnish your memory's.
I will follow to see your future adventures! And if you like I have a good trek video of nepal and lots on japan. Take care
Thanks for the kind words!🙏 ❤️ The Cordillera Huayhuash (and nearby Cordillera Blanca) are absolutely stunning. A video just can't capture how beautiful it truly is. You are going to love it!! Have a safe and wonderful trip!!
We'll definitely check out your channel! We've done some great hikes in Japan (with more to come soon), and we are aiming to get to Nepal in the near future. Happy Trails!!!
Among all the videos I've been watch for this trek, the artistic video of you has thr best shots, best story telling, gave me the feeling of cinematic short films with good transcripts and wonderful videography of all highlights. I'm planning to do this trek but wondering which months of the year you recommend it. Which month did you two do this trak? Also how can i find information about the guides and how am i able to book myself in? Do you recommend to find partners or can be done solo through those guides? (Since i don't have anyone in my team yet)
Hello from the Atacama Desert! 🙏🙏 Thank you so much for the kind words. It means a lot.
We did this trek in July. The conditions were ideal. Generally, June to September is the best time to trek in the Andes. Other times of the year, you have a higher chance of rain and snow, and the passes can close when there is heavy snow.
We booked this with Quechuandes. We highly recommend them, but they typically require a minimum of 4-5 people to form a group. They might be able to support a solo hiker, but you’d have to check with them. There are probably other agencies that can support a solo traveler, but you may need to give yourself a bit of time in Huaraz to check out the options. You’ll want to spend some time there to acclimatize anyway.
We hope you have the chance to do this trek. It is truly amazing, dare we say a life-changing experience!😁
@@MEOWnderlust Thank you thank you thank you! appreciate your time and great tips. Please keep up the good work and can't wait to see more of your awsome adventures!!!
No problem! Hope you have an amazing trip!!
thanks for sharing with us your adventure, what was the name of your tours company guide ?
Thanks for watching! We used Quechuandes. Very professional and fun! Highly recommended!
Thanks for the beautiful video! 🙂 May I ask what month did you hike there? And also, which company did you book the tour with?
Cheers! We did this trek in early July, which is the middle of the Andean summer. The weather was perfect! We trekked with Quechuandes. They were outstanding. Very knowledgeable, professional and kind!
это где такая красота, товарищи?
The closest city to Cordillera Huayhuash is Huaraz, Peru, which is about 7 hours north of Lima by bus. Huaraz is the hiking capital of Peru, with plenty of amazing day hikes and multi-day treks. Highly recommended!!
@@MEOWnderlust I am very glad that you have seen this beauty and can show it to people! Nature and tourism are wonderful! But unfortunately, in our consumer society, long-distance tourism is a great luxury. New roads to you, new impressions and good health!
🙏Cheers! We are quite fortunate to be able to visit these extraordinary destinations. Our hope with these videos is to inspire, and take viewers to places they may not be able to visit themselves. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I didn't observe any instances of "racism" or "cruelty" in this video, maybe its frustration on slowing the pack down.
I guess I should not have cut the footage of the couple in question hiking in their white hoods and robes, or the scene where they flashed their Ku Klux Klan membership cards. 😛
In all seriousness, I guess in the subtitles I failed to adequately explain all that happened. I certainly left out a few details to keep the story moving along.
Racist behavior is not always obvious to those committing it, or to those not on the receiving end. Maybe you just had to be there.
Your theory provides me another opportunity to sing the praises of our wonderful support team at Quechuandes. We were always able (and encouraged) to move at our own pace, and it was never necessary to wait for anyone, so (fortunately) we did not have to hike together as a group unless we wanted to. And whenever necessary, there were enough members of the support team to hike with folks moving at different paces, as was the case when I was ill and hiked with the muleteer and/or cook.
Thank you for taking the time to watch the entire video and follow along with the subtitles, and for taking the time to comment. It helps bring visibility to the story.
Absolutely wonderful
Many thanks!
