In the famous words of Caddicarus: "If you want a game in a franchise to be given the eternal status of "Classic", you need to be able to compare it to its own failings."
Wind Waker will obviously be in the list due to the thumbnail, but I’m entirely expecting Pokémon Black/White to be included as well. I deserve a veteran’s discount for still loving those games back when it was cool to hate on ‘em lol.
I'm in the opposite camp lol - I disliked them then and still think they're among the weakest major entries (I was very much involved in the online discourse back in 2009 too, how times flies).
Honestly, my issue with Apollo was that his character and backstory felt very underdeveloped, like the game was too afraid to let go of Phoenix Wright and let Apollo do his own thing. Thankfully the sequels fixed all the issues I had with him and now I consider him a mainstay in the franchise. I do recomend still playing Apollo Justice, but honestly only to give context to where he came from.
@@gligarguy4010 Oh yeah, plenty, but I think a lot of the hate towards him was misdirected. Like I said though, the sequels fixed his character and even gave him really good backstories to boot
@@PicketPolecat I don't know about that last part. The 1st and 2nd really aren't developed a lot. Namely, the 1st doesn't do much for Apollo's character since he doesn't get any of the information revealed in it, and the 2nd one expects you, the player, to care about a character that you pretty much never see prior to the game's plot. Now that 3rd one though... that was good.
@@espurrseyes42 You never needed to care about the victim enough to meet him in the plot, you only needed to know he was important enough to Apollo that he started to have doubts about Athena. Sure it sucks we only know about him VIA flashback, but we know he was important enough to Apollo to develop him. But yeah, third game cemented his likability ten-fold.
@@PicketPolecat You kinda do. I might care about Apollo and see that he's suffering because of this, but I don't care about his friend. I've never even met the guy and have no connection him or anything to make me truly empathize with Apollo. Unlike another character he's close to that you DO get to spend a fair bit of time with before he dies, making his death and its impact actually matter.
With the Pokémon thing, we're even seeing this play out in real time now. Someone on Twitter complained about how Gen 9's visuals look and is saying that they hope we can go back to the way Sword and Shield look...the same Sword and Shield that people were furious with for the way the visuals and designs looked
@@smashmaster521 gorgeous is a bit much, way better than any of the recent ones, especially sword and shield, but it ain't breaking any boundaries, even quite early graphic overhaul mods looked better
I was extremely happy to see Super Paper Mario here. It remains the only game I ever rent, played, completed it, took back, then much, much later, bought it outright (iirc, it was when Blockbuster was closing), just to go through the game all over again. Enjoyed it even more that second time! Big thanks to you, and Alex "Autarch of Flame" Rochon, by the way! You guys bringing it up so much back then, convinced me to return to it!
Honorable Mentions: *No Man's Sky -The devs DID NOT GIVE UP on this game, and frequently added in features promised at launch. Now, from what I read, No Man's Sky is now better than it was before and totally worth it. *Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017) -Disney: Those aren't gameplay mechanics, those are extortion practices! EA: ...I don't understand the difference. Around March 2018, EA swallows it's pride and overhauls the entire gameplay progression, now all characters and vehicles are unlocked from the getgo. It's as if they had a realization that people actually HATE to be extorted. *Street Fighter 5 -The launch was too lean and light on content for a full price game. Thankfully, meaty expansions restored it to what glory it was supposed to have. *Final Fantasy 14 -The only thing that could save this game was to nuke it and start anew. And... it worked. A Realm Reborn reintroduced Final Fantasy 14 as a beloved MMORPG with a thriving player base.
At the risk of sounding like a hipster, Black/White have actually been my favorite pokemon games since they came out. The story was great, the rivals actually challenged me, and while I'm not over the moon about all the new pokemon, not very fond of the elemental monkeys, it did give me my all time favorite pokemon Hydreigon, who's been a staple in my team ever since. Despite its ridiculous level requirements.
First of all, you don't sound like a hipster at all. Second, I am also in the boat of fans who loved Gen 5 since release. I don't really hate any of the new Gen 5 pokemon, but I love some more than others. I love the starters, the new bugs, Krookodile, Sigilyph, Chandelure, Ferrothorn, Eelektross, Haxorus, and the legendaries. Speaking of Hydreigon, It's still my favorite pseudo-legendary.
@@CryoJnik Don't forget about Larvesta and Volcarona. A first stage Bug/Fire type you have to use until LEVEL 59. It's outright disgusting but oh my god was it worth catching one in Ultra Sun. Having Endeavor evolve right before fighting Ultra Necrozma blind felt so good.
@@StartouchArts Not to mention the fact that it's a physical attacker that evolves into a special one. So if you're doing the whole state training thing it's even worse since you're likely dealing with a timid/modest mon
I actually was okay with the idea of Gen 5 featuring only new Pokémon throughout the main game. Makes it a good entry point for newcomers. Gives them a bit of the experience veterans had with Gen 1.
I never really questioned that when I played for the first time. It always made more sense to me. New region, new pokemon. Maybe have a couple of old faces from previous generations.... But having mostly new pokemon until later or post game made a lot of sense to me.
Beats having Sword/Shield not even bothering to program in most of the Pokemon at all. Having new Pokemon, for gameplay's sake, that I understand, so you can at least trade in for older Pokemon.
I generally don't get upset when a game series tries something new, I always try to be open-minded about things, and it's entirely thanks to that exact mind-set that I even gave spin-off games with unusual or entirely new mechanics a genuine try, and in quite a few cases I actually enjoyed those changes. Good examples of this would be the Yu-Gi-Oh! spin-off games: The Falsebound Kingdom (a Gamecube title that turns what was originally a card game into a turn-based RPG in the vein of something like Final Fantasy, and actually has 3 storylines [though the third story is "hidden" until you complete both Yugi & Kaiba's story modes], and it also heavily encourages replaying the game at least twice) and The Duelists of the Roses (a PS2 title that uses a very different dueling style and adds the Deck Leader mechanic....which sadly has never been revisited since). I can see why Duelists of the Roses floundered and struggled when it first came out, due to how the game can be rather difficult at the start until you get your hands on some better cards, or when your opponent has a field that they hold the advantage on and that you have a disadvantage on (for instance if you used a Fairy deck against an opponent with a Spellcaster deck and on a Darkness field) but I really think that if Duelists of the Roses were to have been released in modern times (or given a modern remake/remaster) that it would do very well, especially with the addition of online play.
This was honestly a very well written countdown with a lot of joke that just cracked me up. Definitely agree with you on the Pokemon series, there is always a trend where the most modern generation tends to garner the most hate but years later are looked back in fondness. Also yes from what I hear, Legends of Arceus is pretty damn good.
Meh, main problem is that Pokemon has the Dynasty Warriors problem. Shittons of titles, very little evolution/change. And with most of them not having great stories or other reasons to play outside of the main loop they get very samey after a few gens. Arceus is the first title in a long time that has meaningfully done something different. Which is why I prefer to play other games like Nexomon Exctinction instead. The newer pokemon titles may or may not be the best games in the series but after 20 years of being bombarded with pokemon games the formula is just really stale for me. Some people are superfans that could buy a new pokemon game every year and love it. But for the rest of us, the formulae becoming so familiar makes minor flaws stand out more because the core loop has less and less pull due to over familiarity. So I'm technically still a gen oner, I'm just not gonna go out of my way to poop in other people's soup. Though I know those same super fans would gladly go out of their way to be shitty to me for having a differing opinion.
It can definitely be hard being a pokémon fan. I just try to have fun and I feel like I'm the exception rather than the norm. It says something when the competitive fanbase is more wholesome
Although that will cause it’s own issues, like a series not continuing anymore, like it did with “God Hand”. Granted, the dislikes was from IGN being absolutely retarted, but thanks to people believing it, “Clover Studios” took such a massive hit that it was one of the reason it closed down.
@@MultiBoxingKid I didn't even know at the time that IGN gave it a crappy review since I haven't gone online for game reviews yet. With that said, f**k IGN for giving Operation Darkness a crappy review because they only reviewed the trailer. THE TRAILER!!!
Everything you said in the Pokemon segment was definitely something that I seriously needed to hear, ever since Sword and Shield came out I’ve honestly been feeling like its been impossible to share how much I love the Pokemon games due to the fact that there’s always those few people that do the “well actuallyyyy” bull crap Hell literally yesterday I saw someone straight up say that they laughed at someone else because that person said that the textures in the gen 9 games look great, laughing at someone because of that is a stupid level of petty/hate. This video may have been the first time in a while where I have seen someone talk about Pokemon without all of the sudden saying “the new games are dog shit though lmao” which is definitely refreshing Oh and the fact that one of the big reasons as to why gen 3 got hate was because you couldn’t transfer Pokemon from the Gameboy games goes to show that time is a flat circle Sorry for making such a long comment, I just had to let that out
Pokemon is one of those franchises where you have to trust your own heart rather than be influenced by others because their reaction is so predictable. I remember resident evil games always being hated between 4 and 7 just because the game didn't "bring horror back to it's roots".
@@astripedgoon6579 meh, both Revelations games were much better than RE5 and 6 combined despite the former repeating already used concepts in prior games (boat setting in Rev 1 borrowed from Dead Aim and island setting in Rev 2 borrowed from Code Veronica X) those 2 brought back the survival horror aspect the series lost thanks to RE4 (yeah I've said it, RE4 isn't THAT scary) and came back in full force for 7 and 8
I like that Sonic Heroes and Unleashed got on the list. I love both of those games as Heroes is my 4th favorite and Unleashed is my 2nd favorite Sonic game. Hate towards games like these is one of many reasons I have a mostly negative attitude towards Sonic fans. They don't appreciate what they get the first time around, and they absolutely refuse to unless Sega practically punches them in the face with a worse game. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if sometime in the future, people look back on Forces fondly, and to those who say that's never going to happen, people currently look back on certain aspects of 06 fondly. If they can do that, they can and most likely will do the same for Forces.
Sonic Heroes is my second favorite game. I don't care how cheap it was, I still love it. I played as Team Rose so many times, those cute characters (except for Big) were so lovable to me and I want to give those little girls a big hug!
I looked back on some things about 06 fondly since launch. The game is a broken mess, but it did do some things right. Plus it's a guilty pleasure and quite fun to speedrun. As for Heroes and Unleashed... I loved those so much that i got FOUR copies of heroes (played them enough to actually screw up the game disk from loading), along with both PS2 and PS3 unleashed. And oh man was the DLC fun and challenging. Speaking of, if anyone thinks the combat is too easy for night stages, don't even bother to level up werehog at all except for unlocking new combos on the HD version. You'll learn REALLY quick how much you took guarding, combos, and a few other things for granted. Especially in one of the DLC stages for Apotos, where enemy stats are the highest you'll ever see.
Gen 5 is easily one of the most underrated in my opinion. What they did really did appeal to me whenever it came out. Whenever I play a new Pokemon game, I usually love playing it to see the new Pokemon. So whenever they brought out a game that had over 150 new Pokemon, I fell instantly in love with this game. Gen 5 has most of my all time favorite Pokemon. The story was pretty good, kept my attention throughout the whole entire thing. The sequel games were even better, introducing a much more diverse story as well as the interesting mix of old and new Pokemon to be plentiful in the region. The introduction of moving Sprites also fascinated me when I was younger The games are not perfect, but there really isn't a game that is perfect. But I do agree with what you said. Pokemon fans need to stop focusing on what the game did wrong, and start appreciating what the game did right
What's weird about when Wind Waker got popular is that it that it went from Twilight Princess being being more popular than Wind Waker to the other way around
God I’m so glad someone else is talking about Starforce! It’s been nice to see more people talking about it considering just how good the story is across its games. I’ve seen a small surge of people talking about Starforce over the last couple of months, like MangaKaman and RPG Monger, and it honestly makes me happy given how much this series means to me. Starforce 3 was one of the first games I ever played on my DS when I was a kid and it hooked me immediately. I became obsessed with the series to the point where I legit cried when I lost my copy of Black Ace. It’s just nice to see more people talking about it and giving it a good word.
This isn’t really game that was hated in launch, just more lukewarm is Star Wars knights of the old republic 2. At first people thought it was too gloomy and talky. It also didn’t help that it was rushed for the Christmas release so the endgame was rather lackluster. However with the restore mod, people paying attention to the writing more, and the gameplay being better, a lot are seeing this as one of the better piece of non George Lucas Star Wars work. Also a lot of people see as a better Deconstruction of Star Wars then last Jedi.
Here's a game that was hated not by The Gamers but by the publisher Sony's treatment of the original PS3 release of demon souls at least it had a good ending with them making a PS5 remake
I keep saying this, but TLJ isn't character deconstruction, there 's no rebuilding after deconstructing, it's complete character destruction, done with malice.
The Werehog stages were actually really fun once you leveled up your moves to unlock enough jump modifiers to make Mario jealous, which also made the already pretty good base combat several times more fun. Also, Sonic and the Black Knight seems to be getting more love on every level except gameplay.
14:15 THANK YOU! When I first found out about Unleashed as a kid (and eventually got to play it on the Wii), I thought every Sonic fan back then was crazy for calling it one of the worst Sonic games ever made. I loved Unleashed on the Wii, and I was able to play it recently on the PS3 and it was even better! I kind of blame Werehog for everyone's hatred of the game as a whole, but the Werehog stages were not NEARLY as bad as people said (in fact I like them just as much as the Day stages and consider them a necessary break from the fast-pace action of the Day stages). It's just unfortunate that Sonic fans tend to favor the Genesis trilogy (plus Generations and Mania) WAY too much and hate literally every other Sonic game outside of those five. There are too many Sonic games from the 2000s that deserves more love (Advanced trilogy, Rush trilogy, Riders duology, etc.) and, I'm just gonna come out and say it, the Genesis trilogy, Generations, and Mania have been oversaturated to the point where I'm getting sick of people focusing on those games and basing fan games off of them and them alone (like seriously, I would love to see some fan games that try to expand the Werehog gameplay or the mechanics from Riders).
Agreed! Although I love the Genesis trilogy, Generations, and Mania, I wish we had more consistent 3D Sonic games that dared to be different, or at least took up more after the Adventure games. I'm cautiously optimistic about Frontiers, and REALLY hoping it'll be good.
10 - Halo 2 will always be the best in the franchise, as far as i'm concerned, i dont HATE any of the other games but Halo 2 was the one that impressed me the most, it took the first game and refined it's gameplay while continuing the story and even setting up a secondary protag in the Arbiter. 9 - wait... people hated Kirby's Epic Yarn?? why? i mean i get it the art gimmick has been seen before but i dont see how anyone can think it's anything less than a fun and artistic take on Kirby. and people wonder why triple AAA gaming doesnt really take risks anymore... 8 - ok, i can see why the hate was strong with this one... you never turn a beloved protag into an asshole. 7 - agreed, Battle Network was so sequel-saturated Capcom basically pulled a Guitar Hero with the franchise, even a good gameplay system can get old really fast. 6 - oh boy, dont even get me started about Paper Mario's decline. Nintendo is driving me ballistic with how they keep relying on DUMB gimmicks instead of just sticking to the original games' formula. biggest case of "if it aint broke, dont fix it" EVER... 5 - Sonic Heroes was far from disliked in my eyes, i thought it was fine... now Shadow The Hedgehog was better than people give credit. yes it's buggy, yes it's edgy, but Sonic Team dared to take a risk with that game. a risk that backfired yes... but i wholly applaud ST for that, it's better than Sonic 06 that's for sure! 4 - people hated Fusion? oh FFS... change can be a good thing people... seriously! save your hate for Other M, that deserves ALL the hate and then some! 3 - New Vegas IS the best in the franchise, especially thanks to the modding community who turned that game into "Skyrim with Guns" in the best way possible. Fallout 4 to me though is still a step in the wrong direction, leaning even more into FPS and less of an RPG... and let me tell you modders had a tougher time than they should've when modding for it... also Bethesda monetized mods... yikes... 2 - i wasnt sold on the cel-shading myself when i saw the ads, but when i started playing it, that was the only thing that i DIDNT like about Wind Waker, so to me that's a sign that it was a great game. that being said Twilight Princess is equally fantastic, the only thing i disliked in that was the Wolf Howling. the Nintendo Gamecube was a great console and i hate that it went underappreciated for so long. 1 - as a Pokemaniac i can confirm how childish the fanbase can be... personally the only main series Pokemon game that i didnt enjoy was Black and White, not because of the story, characters or the Pokemon themselves mind you... but for a region that was based on the USA, it felt constricting AF... seriously that game gives me claustrophobia the same way that Final Fantasy 13 did for people, only it didnt get much less constricting towards the end... it's obvious that they pushed the DS to it's very limit making Gen 5 and i dont hate that... i just dont want to be left feeling like a region is way too small for comfort.
Shadow the Hedgehog sucks. Sonic and the Black Knight is the true hidden gem of the franchise. The best story in the Sonic series and the last story to actually be good, amazing soundtrack and the absolute pinnacle of Crush 40, and extremely fun gameplay. (made even better on an emulator with the motion controls mapped to buttons) I have no clue why people hate black Knight unless they REALLY don't like motion controls. Or they stopped playing halfway through at the false ending and didn't get to the best parts of the game where the big twist happens and you unlock different styles and other playable characters.
@@krimsonkatt i've heard good things about SatBK, but i've thoroughly enjoyed Shadow's solo outing, i never implied that it's perfect, but i disagree with you saying that it sucks.
Regarding your take on the Paper Mario entry of this list, I’m gonna assume that you didn’t even play The Origami King because, for me, it is FAR better than you think it is.
Part of Paper Mario's decline was Nintendo deciding that they wanted only one Mario RPG franchise, and choosing Mario & Luigi. Who knows what will happen now, since the company behind the Mario & Luigi games went bankrupt.
@@crystaljon yeah, Nintendo should just be smart and return Paper Mario to the RPG format, after all how many more gimmicks can they really shove down our throats? we literally face school supplies in Origami King ffs...
As someone who got the GameCube as their first ever game station, Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine and Legend of Zelda Wind Waker were my go to games and still remain my favorite to this day.
Sonic Heroes DID have a PC port, it's not on Steam, only on CD ROM or installable through piracy, but while Speedrunners will say "it feels like an earlier build", the mods I was able to install say otherwise
The wack thing is that if it ever did get a Steam port there's a decent chance it'll be of that old PC version which is one of the worst versions of the game, like how SADX did the same with its physical PC version
@@Superluigi881 I've played both the PS2 and the PC port, idk which one is worse, they're both pretty dogshit. Though yeah the PC port is mildly obscure due to being part of an old bundle and not having a very active modding scene, unlike SADX
Ironically Pokémon Gen 5 was my favorite from the moment I played them. You make a region based on where I was born, and a starter based on my favorite animal and you've hooked me in.
fun fact about Apollo Justice, originially Phoenix wasn't going to be in that game as his story was supposed to have been finished with Trials and Tribulations

My disappointment in MegaMan X8 is immeasurable, I had high hopes it would be amazing, but it's just good, that's it, it's just good, and I dislike it.
Huh. I never knew that Gen. 5 was hated back then. I remember lots of people being excited about it for the changes it does to the tired formula. I really love that the 151 Pokemon are entirely new since it balances out the newcomers and experts. Newcomers can know the basics of the series without having to play the other games while experts have to relearn everything to know what’s ahead. With the amazing story, fleshed our characters, an amazing region, awesome new Pokemon, a beautiful soundtrack and graphics, and HMs being less necessary, I still find it the best in the series. It’s such a shame the next game afterwards, X and Y, felt so forgettable and safe that I find it the weakest in the series. I dunno. While Team Yell are definitely bad, I still think Team Flare from X and Y are still worse, especially that they are inconsistent with their tone. Lysandre being serious yet his crew is all silly made you question if they’re even the same team. 🤦♀️
Also the fact that someone in the sound department of Gamefreak spilled coffee on the sound mixer and put a song during Lysandre's meeting with Diantha that immediately spell "He's EVIL." That blunder made Lysandre the Diet Coke of Evil.
@@Doctorolivercook Gotta love the Austin Powers reference there. XD But I agree, Lysandre is so obvious as the villain that he is the Diet Coke of Evil compared to the past villains. XD
god I am so happy to see gen 5 being discussed here. Finally get the love it deserved since back then. I never understood the complaints people had with that gen when I had it.
The buildup to number 2 is pretty damn accurate: do something similar in a series, you get backlash; do something different, you get backlash. There’s just no winning with some people. I mostly judge a game by their own merits as opposed to someone else’s. I don’t care what people say, I liked Sword and Shield. The Gym Leaders are some of the most memorable in the series, the rivals consisted of almost all variations in past titles, and a damn good set of starters (as in, I could a team around any of them and they’re all pretty good on their own). There are things I would change, but they mostly involve enhancing the characters’ story beats and the buildup to Eternatus.
You know what, I'll chip in with some positivity. Sword and Shield is one of my favorites in the series for actual world-building and rivals. I loved catching a glimpse of how the world actually worked outside of pokemon battles, I loved seeing Hop grow from being honestly pretty annoying to a relatable and welcome challenger. I loved how cooking was used to help bond with your team ( I know that one's always been a thing in some form but I love the camp aesthetic). Heck, I can sum up my thoughts on the game like this. Great characters, so-so story, still a fun time
I agree with that. Every rival in SwSh has a legitimate and more importantly separate reason to compete with you to be champion. A lot of other rivals just share your goal or only serve to make sure you're strong enough for the next area.
Lol my first thought was "Nearly every major Pokemon title" and I'm glad to see it's #1. Speaking of which can't wait for Gen 9 to join this hatred to loving cycle later this year (around the same time Gen 6 becomes the new internet darling). As it goes, people will always love the gen they grew up with (lots of Gen 5 kids using the internet now made the game popular, and those Gen 6 kids are coming very soon to boost X/Y)
As someone who has been with the series since Gen 2, Sword and Shield are the only mainline titles that I *actively despise,* and I hope nobody ever forgets how truly awful those games are.
yeah, i'm 21 played all the mainline games except gen 2 & i was expecting it to be somewhere, & hey i started gen 4 but my fave will always go to X & Y
For me personally it’s like this Gen 1: good start Gen 2: just play the remake Gen 3: great… that’s it, it’s great Gen 4: the best one Gen 5: best story and soundtrack Gen 6: best ideas (in theory) Gen 7: it’s fine Gen 8: … I mean… I like the characters and soundtrack? That’s something right? Keep in mind this is coming from a Gen 5 person but I don’t want to go into a rant about Gen 8 because I know it has its fans and I’ve been in the same position
As someone who came into the pokemon world end of gen 2 beginning of Gen 3. I have to say I've loved every game so much that I tried to get both versions of the game not to complete pokedex but to relive the stories. I agree Unova had the best story I loved N when introduce to him as I had made characters who like N are able to understand pokemon. So to hear that that gen is hated or any of them surprises me. Like you said each game introduces us to something new from the introduction to the Fairy type(which is my favorite type) regional variants to mega evolution and z-move even the elimination of HMs and our first dark type gym and now with the new games coming I can't wait to see what changes it brings.
Mass Effect 3, how could it not make that list? Seriously, outside the various flavors of "Pew Pew" and satisfying character moments, a great portion of the writing was SUPER stupid, like if we got it from Joss Whedon in his latter years. Stupid action after stupid action, like the Dalatrass making you either choose between her fleets or the Krogans, Kai Leng being a thing (seriously, he's a sword-wielding combination of ALL THREE CLASSES), Mordin's death is both sad and terribly stupid given the first article on this list, the fact that the game's story arrests you whether or not you've played Arrival or if you cut your ties with Cerberus, and then the four flavors of "F*** you" called the Ending. I can understand the idea of choosing your ending, but why not make it based on all your choices in the full series? Leaving it as it was just left other choices in the game as pretty much pointless, and making it to where the only choice that actually HAS an effect on the series is the final choice in the series. And then the gameplay; St. Martha Above, the gameplay. You know you've screwed up your programming when one button has up to FOUR FUCTIONS. Seriously, on Xbox, the A button is the strafe-roll-run-interact button if I remember correctly. As well as how the story just divulged into an ultra-linear shooter with waves of three factions of enemies where it boils down to "Shoot-walk-Cutscene; Shoot-Walk-Cutscene." Even down to how hacking into safes or secret doors became as easy as literally pushing one button: the A button. No skill with pattern recognition, problem solving, or even Simon Says like the first game on console. Admittedly something I hate the least is how the Paragon-Renegade system became a fully-fledged morality system, instead of how it was originally more of a split between a Polite and Professional playthrough and a Rough and Rude playthrough. True, it's had a hunt towards moral systems in the first game, but it slowly became more morally-structured as the series went on. At least the DLC was good. Citadel is one of my favorite DLC in the series, I even liked the Battle arena because it felt like I was using Shepard's military prowess to entertain and win the best armors in the game. I was bummed that Legendary Collection omitted it, but I don't hate it.
I hate that Sonic Unleashed hate the Werehog conceptually….for me it absolutely ROCKS. I know it’s flaws, and many of the stages needed some kinks ironed out. But the Thought of SONIC of all people being methodical and Meticulous peaks my interest to the highest degree. And the adrenaline rush is still there in the form of those beat-em-up sections. And don’t get me STARTED about the SYMBOLISM behind the Werehog. To keep it simple, it could a deep dive into Sonic’s greatest fears and anxieties. How can something so mechanically stupid be so conceptually brilliant?
the ice cream pokemon were the result of fans designing pokemon, yes it was opened to a contest for some pokemon. america made the icecream cone, japan made braviary, the most american looking pokemon ever
In a way, I'm kind of the opposite of Pokémon fans you described-- I usually prefer the most recent generation more than others. Also, good news, Legends Arceus is good.
Me as a Gen 5 fan since it came out now that Gen 5 is finally being appreciated: "This does put a smile on my face." (I get the ideas of why people some hated the designs or elements, but to the issue of pokemon designs I have this rebuttal...hasn't there always been some weird designs or even "object mons" in previous generations?)
@@PlahaKumar That's undoubtedly true. With just how many Pokemon there are now (we're nearing a thousand different individual species at this point, and will probably cross that line in gen9), including things like mega evolutions, regional variants, and even certain Pokemon having multiple forms or even different designs based on gender, there are definitely certain Pokemon that stick out as being better or worse than others, and there's no avoiding that. If I really wanted to, I could probably think of a few examples from each generation that I like and also hate
I think it was great to have Wind Waker on the thumbnail. Considering how crazy the criticism was towards that game when it was more cartoony. But now it's loved by most people. It's just great seeing things like these be so hated and or misjudged at first, then proceeds to be universally loved later on.
13:41 "Up and down than a temperature chart in New England" As a New Englander, you've no idea how on the nose this comparison is. Why, just last week, we had: Monday below freezing, Tuesday slightly above freezing, Wednesday slight rain showers, Thursday lovely 60 degree weather, Friday FUCKING SNOWSTORM OUTTA NOWHERE
I've always liked Epic Yarn/Black & White. It's probably because I was a kid at the time of their releases and they were the first entries I played in their respective series so I had nothing else to compare them to, but I believe both truly are good games.
I'd argue that Star Fox Adventure and Assault are contenders- They're part of the last guard considering things that came after. METAL GEAR Rising Revengance- yeah, it's silly and stealth is OPTIONAL, but it's actually really kick ass. I do agree Sunshine and Gen 5 Pkmn are games everyone loved after the face. Then we get Wind Waker. My first Zelda. By the Goddesses I love that game along with Twilight Princess. Wind Waker is silly land serious and it's. So fun
So what have I learned from this video? That gamers couldn't make up their minds which installments of larger franchises they liked the best and not realizing how good they had it until the next game came out!
I remember that I wasn't the biggest fan of Gen 5 when it first came out. It was an odd time for me, as it was when I stopped caring about the anime, I was pretty disappointed with Mystery Dungeons Gateways to Infinity, and I was also going through some phase, wondering what I was starting to like and dislike. Now-a-days, I do love Gen 5. It is not my favorite gen, and I honestly wasn't a big fan of Team Plasma, but the games were indeed fun, and White 2 is up there high on my favorite Pokemon games. To be brutally honest, I don't have a Gen that I outright hate. Sure I wasn't the biggest fan of Sword, and Brilliant Diamond was a huge disappointment for me, but there were still things from Gen 8, I do admit to liking. Like Legends. So, with Gen 9 being announced, I do share the concerns that it was announced a bit too early, but I am curious on how the game will turn out.
I loved the Gamecube games when they first came out. My alltime favorite video game is from that era, back when the Gamecube was brand new and I look back at those days so fondly (except for school, my homeroom teacher during that year was a jerk) I would give almost anything to relive those days and have my alltime favorite video game, Starfox Adventures, be brand new again!! Just leave out the times when I had to go back to school during that year and I will live in bliss again.
I agree on 2 parts: 1: i suspected Black and White would be here. 2: Pokemon fans spend too much time focusing on what the games do wrong instead of appreciating what they do right
Yup, you hit #1 square on the nose. There are some games where you just have to ignore the fandom in order to appreciate the game for what it is, and Pokemon is the textbook example of that.
the rumour mill and fake leaks before every release certainly don't help i have never understood some people's desire to take out their anger on the devs when a lie isn't in the game or they announced something different than insert remake here or skipping the third version.
Would you kindly, consider this honorable mention? Bioshock 2. I haven't specifically researched this and I might be right or wrong... but upon Bioshock 2's release did it get a lot of hate for not... well being Bioshock 1. "You are too powerful as a big daddy" "The story is so bland. No twists!" "It isn't scary!" But nowadays, inside the bioshock community, is Bioshock 2 (generally) seen as a great game. Amazing combat. Fun and well designed Plasmids. The story, while more contained, is much more personal and you really feel invested in the result. Also the game looks amazing for its time. Just my idea.
Surprised No Man Sky wasn't either mentioned or the top spot. It got one of the biggest media firestorms that any game has ever seen (to the point where the Game Awards hosts were mocking the game when it won an award!) and was considered "dead" a few months after launch, but then the devs not only rebuilt the trust of the fanbase, but also grew the game, added stuff that wasn't even mentioned, won more awards years after launch, have continued to support the game for 8 years after launch and did all of this without charging a single penny more than the base cost of the game (They didn't make a single update for the game paid, some of which are so massive, they are on par with some of the best expansion packs, nor did they make VR a paid feature like other games).
I joined the internet in a period when everyone's stroking Wind Waker's ego, so I can't claim to know about the hate the game got on release either. At the same time, I can understand what it went through since a lot of games after that went through the same thing, and I did get to see those.
Great video! There is one game that got hated on when it came out. The game was Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. The game is fantastic and made many improvements over DKC Returns. DKC Returns & Tropical Freeze were made by Retro Studios - who also made the Metroid Prime trilogy. When Tropical Freeze was announced, there were some people that got mad that it wasn't a new Metroid game and just hated Tropical Freeze. It's completely unfair because Tropical Freeze was actually really good. I'm glad that it got a second chance and was re-released onto the Nintendo Switch. Now some people are beginning to realize that DKC: Tropical Freeze is a great game. I understand some people wanted a new Metroid game, but I felt like hating on DKC Tropical Freeze was completely unfair and unwarranted.
i was a Pokémon gen 5 fan day one and seeing all the people who hated on it now call it the golden standard gives me one hell of a smug grin. It feels great when an unpopular game I love gets a complete u turn in reception because something worse comes out to allow it’s great qualities to be truly seen as such. Same thing with Super Paper Mario’s reception as I loved that game and still do, hell I actually like it’s story more then the thousand year door. Idk man I’m a sucker for Romeo and Juliet types of stories and blumeir and timpani’s relationship really hit me.
I remember from Final Fantasy XII was hated back then like going to a forum on Final Fantasy 12 in the late 2000's. People hated the game. For the combat and not being Anime like. My friend found it boring. But I love the game. Even got the Zodiac remaster on PSN. And now people love the gameplay and story.
While I haven't played all the games on here, there are a good chunk of ones I very much liked when they came out, such as Wind Waker, Super Paper Mario, and especially Pokemon Black and White. I always hoped for something like a Black 3 and White 3 to finish things up that had bene left unanswered, like the original dragon. With things like Legends Arceus now, I feel like that possibility may not be too far off.
I find it kind of funny how the game with the most changes to the Metroid style, including Samus' suit was hated... Yet when Dread came out with Samus' new suit, people fell in love with the change.
People's favorite games are typically the ones they grow up with. Nothing else seems as special when you play it later because you're a more experienced and jaded gamer. So even if everything else was equal each new generation is generally going to grow up and then champion their game.
Kinda surprised FF14 didn't make the list, especially how massive the turnaround has been since last year. Nevertheless, excellent list still, especially agree with number 2, since I was a teen when the Gamecube came out and loved all those games. Always found the hate for Wind Waker the weirdest.
If you're referring to the OG FF14 it was a bad game across the board that so much so that Square remade it from scratch. FF14 A realm reborn however was generally liked when it came out. And being "liked" defeats the purpose of this "hated to loved" games for this particular list.
I started playing Pokémon at Gen 4, shortly followed by Leaf Green and had been a fan of each game that came out ever since, does that mean every game was perfect? No but I could appreciate what each game tried to do. I loved the removal of HMs as it opened up more options for my team, each new Pokémon design will always be a hit or miss depending on who’s playing and there’s always something to enjoy in each game.
I agree with you on Pokémon! But seriously no sly cooper thieves in time, I remember when people hated that game, now they think it’s okay and didn’t deserve the hate!
“It did what the other arkham games couldn’t do. Make bane a legitimate threat” THIS! ALL OF THIS! Bane is my favorite Batman villain and I’m so sick of DC’s really s****y flanderization of him. He’s supposed to be Batman’s equal in battle and they treat him like he’s the Rhino.
Amazing list my dude and yes i am old lol i remember everyone hating on fusion and when i got prime and fusion to get the costume for prime i loved both games prime was more traditional while fusion was the horror version. Great video
I'm calling it right now, The 2022 fails list will include Nintendo shutting down Gilvasunner, closing the 3ds and wii u eshop, and some third thing I can't remember.
Super Paper Mario: Trying to stop an Evil Count from destroying the entire Multiverse! Paper Mario: Sticker Star: Trying to stop Bowser (again) who stole a "very powerful" sticker...and Mario looks like he's been possessed...
I have to mention Nier Gestald and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Nier was trashed upon release and it took years before people actually appreciated it. Kotor 2 got a lot of flak for being rushed as well as for not living up to Kotor 1 however over time people appreciated the great story and characters and while it deconstructed the Star Wars universe like The Last Jedi did, it also reconstructed it something The Last Jedi didn’t do!
also kotor 2 had improved the gameplay, also you said it deconstruction was actually pretty interesting take on the jedi and the force. also we arguable the best antagonist in star wars(Kriea) expect Palpatine
Hey, Josh, you've covered a lot of different elements for bosses in the past, but one that I've noticed is missing? Light. The light is not always your friend. Ultra Necrozma from Pokemon and The Radiance from Hollow Knight are some good examples, and while I can't think of any others right off the top of my head, I'm sure you can find some more.
17:42 - Wait...WHAT!?!? I remembered it happening in the COMPLETELY opposite way! When Prime was revealed, I heard fans HATED it, thinking that Nintendo's ruining Metroid by turning it into an FPS while they say they'll rather support Fusion because it's 'faithful to the Metroid formula'. As for Wind Waker, isn't that more because of earlier on, Nintendo showed a tech demo of a realistic-ish Link and Ganondorf sword-fighting so fans expected that instead of the cel-shaded Wind Waker?
True, Prime's reveal was met with suspicion at best, but once people played it, they realized, "Oh, hey, this is an FPS that actually plays like a Metroid game."
Was expecting Gen 5 to be somewhere since it's the first thing I thought of when seeing the title. Didn't expect it to be No 1 though. That being said, Daniel Bryan Danielson said it best: "Fans are fickle."
Reasons why hating is pointless: 1. It gives no benefit. 2. It takes more effort than not caring or even liking, both of which do have benefits. I'm not saying not to dislike things, I'm just saying that hating things is much more effort for even less reward. If there is something you hate, it might be a good idea to try it. In my experience, everything I've hated I actually liked when I gave it a chance.
Frankly, I don't get why Gen 5 Pokemon got so much hate. I played through Gates of Infinity and I loved the Pokemon there. From freaking Hydreigon to those Timburrs and Gurdurr construction men
Here is my opinion on Halo. Halo 3 original release was good, but it burned me so bad that I've only ever picked up Halo 4 once and I and I've never touched a Halo game as a player unless it was 1 or 2 since the release of 3.
Oh. Now this looks like a fun topic. Sometimes games that seem bad to people aren't really as bad as you think they are. Then again I can think of many games I liked that people hate for some of the dumbest reasons.
This is one of my least favorite trends in gaming, and media in general. Can we start appreciating the good in stuff that’s coming out NOW, and not a decade later? And if you do happen to have a positive opinion on something that’s currently being hated, share it! Don’t stay quiet until it’s “acceptable” to say anything positive about it. Allow me to put my money where my mouth is. I, for one, love Sword and Shield and its DLC. I love the Pokémon, the region, the characters, the music, the shear energy, and the wild area was a step in the right direction for the franchise.
The thing is that true art is often hated for clout look no further that literature snobs hating on comics and Manga. Heck when Brahm Stokers Dracula came put it was raked over the coals and it's the standard for classical vampires. I've noticed that what's immediately popular most of the time will fall off with age as people realize it's glaw where truly good media will only ever grow.
I hate the circlejerk. I don't mind people going back in praising the good aspects of overhated games but my god whenever this happens a lot of people treat these games like the second coming of christ. And if it's a part of a long-running franchise it's always used to shit on the most recent games. Yeah I'm a Pokemon fan lmao. Love Pokemon Black and White and its sequels but I do not like the circlejerk surrounding them.
@@mercerholt8299 And further more, with this modern era, the vocal minority of haters drown out all the positivity. In turn, the love the game *should* be receiving largely goes unheard. And the axe goes both ways; stuff that should not be popular becomes popular, and it isn't all the Uber-love has gone quiet that the cracks are brought to light.
Shit, I'll add to that, brother. SWSH also had two of the best rivals in the series with both Hop and Klara. Hop wanted so desperately to live up to his brother's name, but could never outclass you, his rival. We see him broken after Bede beats him and after the game ends he still feels that paid. It isn't until after the post game where he learns he has other skills that could help not only people but pokemon, and ends up giving up his dream to become a professor. That was a mature lesson I greatly approve of. Sometimes in life you're not always going to get your way, but you can pick yourself back up and try something else. As for Klara, she began as a very toxic person, even going so far as to cheat on a battle by laying out poisoned spikes to weaken your pokemon. But, after being shown up again and again she becomes more humbled, and by the end she's a bit less toxic and may even have some respect for you. She's not completely reformed, but she shows that she is willing to change.
While I do agree with Josh that Team Yell is easily the worst villain team to the point where I feel bad even calling them villains, I 100% agree with all of this
Yeah, I see. Nero was an intriguing new character(before DMC5 where he gained more depth thus being called deadweight which he dislikes), the villains were like the gaming equivalent to Jehovah's Witness(a "Christian Group" who worships God and Jesus even though their true colors were revealed as a horrific cult), and Dante is entertaining as ever! Hell, I even quote the Dante vs Agnus cutscenes pre and post battle to this day thanks to it being an homage/parody of Shakespeare! Like with Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, and among others imo, it's a fun and worthy game in spite of it's flaws! In the Special Edition version of DMC4, we get to play as Trish, Lady, and Vergil who gets their own stories which upon playing DMC5 we can understand smoothly!
While I understand how people thought Sticker Star was a step down compared to the OG Paper Mario, Paper Mario TTYD or, to a lesser extent, Super Paper Mario, I admittedly don't share their opinion because: 1) I never grew up playing Paper Mario 2) I was a little late getting on the Paper Mario train 3) It was the first ever Paper Mario game I ever played/owned.
And apparently I'm one of the few older fans that likes Sticker Star in spite of everything. *sigh* Unfortunately, as I recently said, I predict we'd sooner get both a new F-Zero game _and_ an official Mother 3 localization before the hate for the newer Paper Mario games, especially Sticker Star, dies down.
I actually liked RE 5 when I first played it. A bit hammy, I’ll admit, but it was still as enjoyable as RE 4. Also, Batman: Arkham Origins was fun b/c, as expressed, Bane was an actual threat in this installment. Plus, Arkham Knight was enjoyable, even with the whole “tank simulation.” Guys, y’all have GOTTA remember. It’s friggin’ BATMAN! Superman would NEVER consider being THIS prepared.
5 Pre-video predictions (in no particular order): 1. Legend of Zelda Wind Waker 2. Pokemon Gen 5 3. Super Mario Sunshine 4. Earthbound 5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl The first one should be a no-brainer because of the thumbnail unless I get completely fooled. EDIT: Earthbound was an honorable mention. Josh had to cheat with the #2 entry to include my #1 & #3 prediction picks. Brawl never got mentioned. Pokemon Gen 5 topping the list was a pleasant surprise for me. BTW Gen 5 for life!
Brawl is honestly the opposite. It was hyped as hell and loved when it was the newest entry. Now it gets picked on a lot and is debated as the weakest Smash game. Note: I'm not arguing for that, just stating what I've heard from the Smash community the past 7 years.
Pokemon Black and White was my first Pokemon game. When I watched this video, my heart broke. People hated this game? With Pokemon being number one, I have a hot take. Maybe one day, Scarlet and Violet might be good one day.
My guess is because it was a vast departure from previous 2D Metroid games due to more of an emphasis on a linear, story-focused game than an open-ended one that invited exploration. It’s still a really great game though imo despite those changes.
I think the state of the pokemon fandom is in part the constant frustration about stuff like cutting well liked features (battle frontier, secret bases, mega evolution), sticking to disliked features (forced EXP Share) and finding that the franchise has been lagging behind its peers in terms of quality with things like animations. Some of the hate is extreme but so's some weirdly aggressive apologism and shilling over the objectively bad stuff, which just creates a huge mess.
In the famous words of Caddicarus:
"If you want a game in a franchise to be given the eternal status of "Classic", you need to be able to compare it to its own failings."
Um what about kirby?
@Draven: the frost ace star allies
@@dravenmartinez6311Dream Course is ass
Wind Waker will obviously be in the list due to the thumbnail, but I’m entirely expecting Pokémon Black/White to be included as well. I deserve a veteran’s discount for still loving those games back when it was cool to hate on ‘em lol.
You. Yes, you.
You get it.
No mans sky needs to be here
Pokémon black and white duology I thin is when Pokémon peak(at least in single player, competive wise by the looks of it was a mess)
I'm in the opposite camp lol - I disliked them then and still think they're among the weakest major entries (I was very much involved in the online discourse back in 2009 too, how times flies).
Black/White? I was thinking X/Y.
People disliked Apollo Justice? I had no idea (I played it at launch, though it was cool)
@@gligarguy4010 Oh yeah, plenty, but I think a lot of the hate towards him was misdirected.
Like I said though, the sequels fixed his character and even gave him really good backstories to boot
@@PicketPolecat
I don't know about that last part.
@@PicketPolecat
You kinda do.
The Pokémon cycle is real
Okay, as much as I'm concerned about Gen IX becoming the Pokemon equivalent to Sonic 06, that person is an idiot because Gen IX looks GORGEOUS.
@@skymario1012 I don't think so, you just need to sort the legitimate complaints from the bad/flawed ones.
Goddamn this fanbase.

Same here!
I love the older games and TOK but this is still my favorite....
Honorable Mentions:
*No Man's Sky
-The devs DID NOT GIVE UP on this game, and frequently added in features promised at launch. Now, from what I read, No Man's Sky is now better than it was before and totally worth it.
*Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017)
-Disney: Those aren't gameplay mechanics, those are extortion practices!
EA: ...I don't understand the difference.
Around March 2018, EA swallows it's pride and overhauls the entire gameplay progression, now all characters and vehicles are unlocked from the getgo. It's as if they had a realization that people actually HATE to be extorted.
*Street Fighter 5
-The launch was too lean and light on content for a full price game. Thankfully, meaty expansions restored it to what glory it was supposed to have.
*Final Fantasy 14
-The only thing that could save this game was to nuke it and start anew. And... it worked. A Realm Reborn reintroduced Final Fantasy 14 as a beloved MMORPG with a thriving player base.
When Disney tells you you’re being to greedy and money hungry you have messed up!
Those all are just games with poor launches that were greatly improved through patches &/or rereleases.
A little different there.
Too bad battlefront 2 was abandoned.
Does FF14 really count? A Realm Reborn is pretty much a completely new game.
FF14 basically went from essentially dogshit, to, no joke, one of the greatest MMOs on the market today, EVEN OUTCLASSING WOW.
Black and White had some truly absurd level requirements. 54 for one stage evolutions like Bisharp and the counterpart birds?
@@CryoJnik yeah! Were they smoking crack?
First of all, you don't sound like a hipster at all. Second, I am also in the boat of fans who loved Gen 5 since release. I don't really hate any of the new Gen 5 pokemon, but I love some more than others. I love the starters, the new bugs, Krookodile, Sigilyph, Chandelure, Ferrothorn, Eelektross, Haxorus, and the legendaries. Speaking of Hydreigon, It's still my favorite pseudo-legendary.
@@CryoJnik Don't forget about Larvesta and Volcarona.

I actually was okay with the idea of Gen 5 featuring only new Pokémon throughout the main game.
Makes it a good entry point for newcomers. Gives them a bit of the experience veterans had with Gen 1.
What this guy said
Definitely
I never really questioned that when I played for the first time. It always made more sense to me. New region, new pokemon. Maybe have a couple of old faces from previous generations.... But having mostly new pokemon until later or post game made a lot of sense to me.
It also makes it a fresh experience for veterans.
I would honestly love a Duelist of the Roses rerelease, especially with the ability to duel online.
I agree with how you view things since I also live life that way with an open mind
Can confirm, but I fear people are gonna hate on Scarlet and Violet because of it
Meh, main problem is that Pokemon has the Dynasty Warriors problem.
@@Ralathar44 I think Poketekken is a better 3d Pokemon than the RPG games.
It can definitely be hard being a pokémon fan. I just try to have fun and I feel like I'm the exception rather than the norm. It says something when the competitive fanbase is more wholesome
The Pokémon fandom only seems bad because it’s so big and the vocally negative fans are clouding your vision.
Sometimes it take awhile for a good game to get the recognition it deserved.

Everything you said in the Pokemon segment was definitely something that I seriously needed to hear, ever since Sword and Shield came out I’ve honestly been feeling like its been impossible to share how much I love the Pokemon games due to the fact that there’s always those few people that do the “well actuallyyyy” bull crap
Hell literally yesterday I saw someone straight up say that they laughed at someone else because that person said that the textures in the gen 9 games look great, laughing at someone because of that is a stupid level of petty/hate.
This video may have been the first time in a while where I have seen someone talk about Pokemon without all of the sudden saying “the new games are dog shit though lmao” which is definitely refreshing
Oh and the fact that one of the big reasons as to why gen 3 got hate was because you couldn’t transfer Pokemon from the Gameboy games goes to show that time is a flat circle
Sorry for making such a long comment, I just had to let that out
Pokemon is one of those franchises where you have to trust your own heart rather than be influenced by others because their reaction is so predictable. I remember resident evil games always being hated between 4 and 7 just because the game didn't "bring horror back to it's roots".

I’d say Apollo Justice is still regarded as one of the weaker games of the franchise for a LOT of reasons, but it’s by no means a bad game.
To be fair, is hard to compete when the franchise has higher than usual standards for adventure/visual novel games.
This entirely.

The introduction of moving Sprites also fascinated me when I was younger
The games are not perfect, but there really isn't a game that is perfect. But I do agree with what you said. Pokemon fans need to stop focusing on what the game did wrong, and start appreciating what the game did right
Huh, this should be interesting. Wonder if we’ll get a reverse of this like “Top ten Loved games that aren’t as loved anymore”.
Only one that really comes to mind is Shenmue
Bioshock Infinite for that list. Apparently most everyone I talk to hates that game. Even though it was consistently praised years ago.
It's possible.
Donkey Kong 64, Megaman X3 and Mario Galaxy 2 comes to mind. Note that I still love DK64, but others don't share that.
@@CountShaman DK64 definitely works
Zelda seems to go through that a lot. At least starting with Majora's Mask (my favorite game of all time).
What's weird about when Wind Waker got popular is that it that it went from Twilight Princess being being more popular than Wind Waker to the other way around
Twilight Princess is my personal favourite but Wind Waker is the one I’ve played through the most
@AT Productions oops I guess I spelled it wrong wrong without realizing it
I’m glad that someone else appreciates Sonic Heroes. It was my first Sonic game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, you do a great Doofensmirtz.
@@redseagaming7832 some people actually hate the remake I don't know why but hey you can't please everyone nowadays
Don't forget black Knight. Black Knight was the best.
I used to own a physical copy of that PC port but my old laptop ran it like playing it on a toaster so I sold it.
The wack thing is that if it ever did get a Steam port there's a decent chance it'll be of that old PC version which is one of the worst versions of the game, like how SADX did the same with its physical PC version
@@Chaos.A I thought the ps2 version was the worst port. That's what everyone else seems to say. Though they may not have known the pc port exists.

1. The Entire Pokémon Franchise, but mostly Generation 5.
XD
Oh trust me, Gen 5 got it pretty bad at first. My brother even tried to claim that it was a parody of the Pokémon franchise as a whole.
I miss the dream world...
I remeber when gen 5 got some hate. I'm honestly glad it getting the love it deserves.
god I am so happy to see gen 5 being discussed here.
Which Gen IX starter are you choosing: Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly?
As someone who has been with the series since Gen 2, Sword and Shield are the only mainline titles that I *actively despise,* and I hope nobody ever forgets how truly awful those games are.
yeah, i'm 21 played all the mainline games except gen 2 & i was expecting it to be somewhere, & hey i started gen 4 but my fave will always go to X & Y
For me personally it’s like this
Gen 1: good start
Gen 2: just play the remake
Gen 3: great… that’s it, it’s great
Gen 4: the best one
Gen 5: best story and soundtrack
Gen 6: best ideas (in theory)
Gen 7: it’s fine
Gen 8: … I mean… I like the characters and soundtrack? That’s something right?
Keep in mind this is coming from a Gen 5 person but I don’t want to go into a rant about Gen 8 because I know it has its fans and I’ve been in the same position
@@linhardtvonhevring7262 Quaxly for the win!
Alright. Now how bout reversing this as “Once LOVED Games That Are Now HATED”?
Most of blizzard's modern library
Me as a Gen 5 fan since it came out now that Gen 5 is finally being appreciated: "This does put a smile on my face."
(I get the ideas of why people some hated the designs or elements, but to the issue of pokemon designs I have this rebuttal...hasn't there always been some weird designs or even "object mons" in previous generations?)
See, those bad designs don't count because of Nostalgia Bias
There's alwasy bad Pokemon designs no matter the generations.

As a New Englander, you've no idea how on the nose this comparison is.

My alltime favorite video game is from that era, back when the Gamecube was brand new and I look back at those days so fondly (except for school, my homeroom teacher during that year was a jerk)
I would give almost anything to relive those days and have my alltime favorite video game, Starfox Adventures, be brand new again!! Just leave out the times when I had to go back to school during that year and I will live in bliss again.
Epic Yarn is basically like Tt Lego Games, you can't get game overs...but completing the game is the true challenge
I agree on 2 parts:
1: i suspected Black and White would be here.
2: Pokemon fans spend too much time focusing on what the games do wrong instead of appreciating what they do right
Most do, but not me. I appreciate the mechanics introduced in X and Y, and absolutely love how much Sun and Moon overhauled the formula.
With Pokémon White 2 being my first Pokémon game and, more importantly, my home. It’s nice to see it get so much praise
"You are too powerful as a big daddy"
"The story is so bland. No twists!"
"It isn't scary!"
But nowadays, inside the bioshock community, is Bioshock 2 (generally) seen as a great game.
Amazing combat. Fun and well designed Plasmids. The story, while more contained, is much more personal and you really feel invested in the result.
Also the game looks amazing for its time.
Just my idea.
This should be a fun video to watch. Underdog games earning their love
I never thought Wind Walker was a game that nobody would like, from what I heard it’s due to a sudden change in the art style.
I joined the internet in a period when everyone's stroking Wind Waker's ego, so I can't claim to know about the hate the game got on release either. At the same time, I can understand what it went through since a lot of games after that went through the same thing, and I did get to see those.

I knew a Halo title was going to be here, but didn’t care where it was placed. I did not expect it right off the bat.
i was a Pokémon gen 5 fan day one and seeing all the people who hated on it now call it the golden standard gives me one hell of a smug grin.
Sonic Unleashed wasn't an Xbox 360 game. It was an Xbox Series X/S game that they managed to get running on the 360.

That’s probably because Samus’ new suit in Dread looks more similar to her original iconic suit that everyone loves compared to Samus’ suit in Fusion.
There was a time when Metroid Fusion was unpopular when it first came out?
You learn something new every day.
Another Gamecube example....(though I am not sure.) Might be Star Fox Adventures.
The graphics still hold up, and it is an enjoyable Zelda-like game.
The best way to describe that is Zelda with a coat of Star Fox paint.
@@SuperCaptureDevice It was suppose to be Dinosaur Plant, but Nintendo forced Rare to make it a Starfox game.
Only focusing on the negatives will make it hard to enjoy a series.
And yes, I'm referring to the Pokémon entry
Oh really? I assumed you were talking about MegaMan X.
I agree with you on Pokémon! But seriously no sly cooper thieves in time, I remember when people hated that game, now they think it’s okay and didn’t deserve the hate!
“It did what the other arkham games couldn’t do. Make bane a legitimate threat”
THIS! ALL OF THIS! Bane is my favorite Batman villain and I’m so sick of DC’s really s****y flanderization of him. He’s supposed to be Batman’s equal in battle and they treat him like he’s the Rhino.
Exactly, How do you Battle Darkness, against Darkness, you give it steroids, an anger attitude, a above all a suplexxed spine
I loved Origins from the beginning.
Least the animated series and dark knight rises also go bane right too.
Amazing list my dude and yes i am old lol i remember everyone hating on fusion and when i got prime and fusion to get the costume for prime i loved both games prime was more traditional while fusion was the horror version. Great video
Gotta love that puppetmon syndrome~
Tho I takes me playing the game/watching-learning about the character/etc to love it
I'm calling it right now, The 2022 fails list will include Nintendo shutting down Gilvasunner, closing the 3ds and wii u eshop, and some third thing I can't remember.
Gen 4 was always and still is my favorite! I also always loved Wind Waker and Metroid Fusion. A lot of my favorite games were on this list.
Literally the only things associated with Team Yell I liked are their battle theme, Piers, and Marnie.
Was expecting Gen 5 to be somewhere since it's the first thing I thought of when seeing the title. Didn't expect it to be No 1 though. That being said, Daniel Bryan Danielson said it best: "Fans are fickle."
I was there when it happened. I was bullied for it and now it feels like I’m seeing those same bullies 10 years after high school
Reasons why hating is pointless:
Yeah, kinda why I say I dislike X8.
Genuine question, is it in bad taste to say I loved gen 5 from the start?
No. It shows you have good taste
Frankly, I don't get why Gen 5 Pokemon got so much hate. I played through Gates of Infinity and I loved the Pokemon there. From freaking Hydreigon to those Timburrs and Gurdurr construction men
Everyone loved gen 5 from the start. It's a recent invention to act like it was ever hated.
Nah, I 100% did as well and was shocked to see how much hate it got back in the day.
@@amirgarcia547 What hate? Where are you people pulling this from? People adored it!
For example, Pokémon black and white duology for pushing new stuff and people wanting more gen 1.
Colosseum and XD Gale of Dark was will always be some of my favorite Pokémon games. :3
While I do agree with Josh that Team Yell is easily the worst villain team to the point where I feel bad even calling them villains, I 100% agree with all of this
I'm honestly a little surprised DMC4 wasn't on this list, but I can see why you went with your picks.
I actually loved Unova from Day 1, though I'll admit that it may have made my lack of appreciation for Gen 6 even worse at the time
THANK YOU!!! YOUR OPINION ON POKEMON IS LITERALLY WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING FOR YEARS!!!
While I understand how people thought Sticker Star was a step down compared to the OG Paper Mario, Paper Mario TTYD or, to a lesser extent, Super Paper Mario, I admittedly don't share their opinion because:
1) I never grew up playing Paper Mario
2) I was a little late getting on the Paper Mario train
3) It was the first ever Paper Mario game I ever played/owned.
Same.
Same
And apparently I'm one of the few older fans that likes Sticker Star in spite of everything. *sigh* Unfortunately, as I recently said, I predict we'd sooner get both a new F-Zero game _and_ an official Mother 3 localization before the hate for the newer Paper Mario games, especially Sticker Star, dies down.
It was my first, still can't say I liked it
@@SuperGoker64 I recommend Bug Fable, It's like Paper Mario.
Can't wait to see Josh and Arei's reaction to the Pokemon Direct.
I always loved Gen 5, and I am glad that the fan reception of the games is getting more positive.
5 Pre-video predictions (in no particular order):
1. Legend of Zelda Wind Waker
2. Pokemon Gen 5
3. Super Mario Sunshine
4. Earthbound
5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
The first one should be a no-brainer because of the thumbnail unless I get completely fooled.
EDIT: Earthbound was an honorable mention. Josh had to cheat with the #2 entry to include my #1 & #3 prediction picks. Brawl never got mentioned. Pokemon Gen 5 topping the list was a pleasant surprise for me. BTW Gen 5 for life!
Don't forget Sonic Unleashed
First three I can definitely see happen.
@@gengargamer5657 Unleashed, Heroes, Black Knight, Secret Rings, hell ik plenty that even hated Colors back in the day.
@@shadowlinkbds 06 can kinda be considered now too
Brawl is honestly the opposite.
So um...... HOW DID PEOPLE HATE METROID FUSION?! I'm actually really shocked when I heard that in this list.
