I'm surprised Cyberpunk 2077 didn't make the list.Considering the fact I haven't seen a game in my lifetime with that level of hype. Everyone was duped by its marketing and I mean everyone
@@pancakes8670 well at least with no man's sky they're still working on it. Feels like cyberglitch wont ever be a decent game no matter how many updates they throw at it. That game is just terrible
I'm surprised Balan Wonderland-world didn't make it on this list. It's the first time Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima worked together on a video game in years starring a character largely inspired by Nights and was going to be published by Square Enix. The hype was real... and then the demo came out.
@@donovanboykins1995 Balan Wonderland was square's idea. They wanted Yuji Naka to a 3d platformer and Naka just said yes. I feel like Naka is creative when the idea comes from him like Nights.
i have been playing it. sure i probably didn't have to deal with the Jank of the demo. but really it isn't as bad as people make it out to be. there's better platformers out there, but it just got way to much hate at release for what it is. it's actually quite fun to find out how to work with each costume. wish there was a little more direction on what to do though.
...an anime fan on prom night? How is that bad? Do the ones you know forget to bring their waifu pillow/cutout? I almost forgot mine but remembered last minute. She was jealous of my locker waifus though.
I can agree that Other M's story was a mess, however, I hate the aftermath that game caused. For those unaware there were a few false allegations thrown at Sakamoto where they claimed he hated the Prime series (even though he was involved with it) and that he mistreated/abused his staff. The poor guy had his name dragged through the mud for over a decade now because of these this and just because he got a little too ambitious with this game. It's only now with Dread coming out that I've seen the tone start to shift. Still, I think it's time to drop this and just realize developers are human too, they'll make mistakes. And while you can criticize them for said mistakes it's not worth over 10 years of unwarranted hate.
I’m just assuming the outrage was also caused by the fact that the main series, along with prime, had never really had a bad game till then. Every single game up until that point had been solid and told its story mostly through atmosphere. Then fans got this game and it felt like a giant slap in the face. Honestly it was the perfect shit storm. So perfect that it killed the series for essentially over a decade.
@@Phantron By today’s standards yeah. But back in the day it was a classic. Not only that but it was revolutionary for the Metroidvania genre. It was basically the first of its kind. I don’t like the game either but it’s got its place in history.
Even with Dread, I doubt the fanbase is still gonna forgive him. Only his death will satisfy them, as they think of him as little more than a talentless and misogynistic hack. Not to mention that the fanbase now seems to want Japan nowhere near the franchise, and hate anything that could resemble anime being a part of it, blaming that style and the country as a whole for how Other M turned out (due to it being made to appeal more to them). ……Man do I hate the Metroid fanbase at times. I groan every time I see Josh put Other M on a list, due to knowing it’ll just bring out more of these sorts of comments.
Honestly, I would put no man's sky lower just because of how much they fixed across the years. It takes guts and is impossible for me not to respect that
Meh, it's kind of a scumbag tactic. Hype the game up beyond belief (aka deceive people), deliver a disappointing product, and then use the money from your initial scam to slowly, over years, turn it into the game that you originally announced and that it should have been on day one.
@@Howitchewstofeel5gum but they already got the money. They didn't need to fix it. Heck, they lost the opportunity to just lie and get away with the money. Now, if they want to earn that money again, they need to make a new game AFTER losing the public trust
@@Howitchewstofeel5gum if you consider No man‘s sky is a scumbag scam to you, I don’t even wanna know what you’ve gotta say about EA, Bethesda, Activision, Konami… etc., considering they make no man‘s sky look like a saint.
@@sasir2013 Well, they got the money from the initial sales and pre-orders then, yes. By patching the game up they no doubt have generated a lot more sales over the years, probably many times what they made from the initial launch. My point is that everybody goes on about how much they improved NMS over the years to the point of almost forgetting that they could only improve it so much because it was an utter disappointment at launch. I want companies to release finished products, not scam people into pre-ordering games with an insane hype-train and then make good on their initial promises after the fact and even get praised for it.
To give you an idea as to why the 6 year hiatus hurt Metroid fans so much, we got 5 amazing Metroid games within the span between 2002-2007, the Metroid Prime Trilogy, Fusion, & Zero Mission Hell, Metroid used to be one of THE reasons to be a Nintendo fan, instead of a niche franchise
I hate to break it to you but it’s always been niche. There’s been 2 true successes for the franchise; super, and prime 1. Metroid fans love to voice their opinions but I have never seen a fan base this unwilling to vote with their wallets outside of touhou. This is precisely why people must by dread. Even the metroid 2 remake that everyone shouted with praise for finally “giving people what they wanted” except a reason to buy it apparently because it sold only about 50k copies. Other M probably exists because Nintendo needed a reason to justify making these games and were willing to try anything.

I actually remember wanting to pick up Colonial Marines at one point. Until an employee at the store actually warned me about how bad this game was and convinced me not to buy it. To that unknown hero who stopped me from loosing my money to this travesty, I thank you. I only wish they could have stopped me from downloading TLOU Part 2.
oh shut up, TLOU Part 2 is amazing, easily my favorite game of all time. Also ACM ain't that bad, it's been patched so the AI is leagues better now. I actually had a good time with it.
For western audiences, yes. The problem is that Sakamoto REALLY wanted to make Samus appealing for the japanese audiences, and Japan's ideals for waifus are short submissive kitchen dolls, which he tried to turn Samus into. All it ended up doing was alienating the western fandom and the japanese audience didn't care
@@quintonblackburn3916 Based on what I’ve seen, not even Japanese fans liked how she turned out in Other M, and also go for less submissive characters. Best to not generalize them based on how the game turned out.
From what I remember, the Authorization thing in Other M is even worse. It's not Adam authorizing Samus to use federation equipment. But _her own equipment._ And I mean sure there are sensible reasons why they wouldn't want her using some of her things, those could actually be dangerous to the other people on the mission. But then you have stuff like not allowing her to use her _entirely non-dangerous heat-resistant suit_ in the heated area until some distance into there (iirc), at which point it starts to feel like the people designing the gameplay and the people designing the story and lore elements had no communication in between (gameplay devs maybe expecting it to be the old "Samus finds her stuff in the levels" thing or something).
Fun Fact, Aliens Colonial Marines is a major reason why game previews all now include a "game footage not final" disclaimer on them. The lack of one is what caused Gearbox to get burned.
Gonna be honest, I was really scared KH3 was gonna be on this list! KH3 is an overall pretty good game, but there were TONS of videos talking abour how "KH3 was disappointing." with a ton of people still talking about that to this day. Thankfully, there's still a large audience (myself included) who feel the game is still very good, albeit a bit lacking in some areas. Honestly, with how much development hell KH3 went through, it could of very easily turned into the Sonic 06 of the franchise. We definitely dodged a bullet or two.
I am one of those fans who were very dissapointed with KH3 (For good reason) but I couldn't see it on this list since it's a more general list and there are clearly worse games, as said Sonic 06. They made what they could for KH3 and for a rushed game its decent, it just didint live up to the hype for me and others.
Kingdom Hearts 3 didn't disappoint me because, let's be honest, it was expected that the story would be all sorts of silly. But hey, at least the gameplay was fun!
FF13 was a hallway, but it worked because it KNEW that it WANTED to be a hallway. Honestly, the disappointing one for me was 15, that one had no idea what it wanted to be.
@@amirgarcia547 The problem with FF13 is that it was directed by the guy who did Final Fantasy X 2 and the FF directors we do like were busy with other projects.
Well there was Jedi fallen order but the only reason I thought that because EA. However, I really loved it and I consider fallen order to be one of the best star wars games we got in recent years.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2020 is how you make a more realistic take on Sonic. The devs on Sonic 06 thought that realism meant dark when you can make a more realistic take on a character without having to go darker and edgier.
Another problem with Metroid: Other M is that it had WAY TOO MUCH dialogue and way too many cut-scenes for a 3D Metroid game. The Metroid Prime Trilogy worked so well because it GRADUALLY introduced small cut-scenes and dialogue in each subsequent game, while still keeping most of that feeling of isolation coupled with the drive for continuous exploration and puzzle solving.
Everytime I see someone talk about Mighty no. 9, I’m always reminded I was one of the Beckers and my name will forever be on the wall of shame (credits). The shame will never leave me.
I love how Halo: MCC never made it onto the list nor the honorable mentions The Updates and New Season Content has really made it into a New Game unlike it’s 2014 Past
The funniest silver lining on Mighty Number 9 is that while it was far from figuratively reviving the Mega Man series, it literally did revive it. Well, it was one of the recipients of 11’s existence, but still. Talk about irony.
I think the two on here with the massive story problems on this list, Sonic '06 and Metroid: Other M, could easily be fixed if you tweeked one or two things each: Sonic '06 - Get rid of Elise and replace her with Blaze. It gives Blaze a reason to be there, it actually connects the story to Sonic Rush, and instead of having Blaze unleashing Iblis through crying, she does so by giving into her rage, which actually works story wise Metroid: Other M - Have it either be a story that takes place when Samus is just starting out as a Bounty Hunter, before the first game, or - as you said - have Adam's condescending attitude towards Samus be more of an inside joke
In the case of Other M, it would make Samus' freeze up much more forgiveable in particular. It would make sense that Samus would be scared of the thing that killed her family if it was the first time she had to fight him. Overcoming that would subsequently make her more badass.
@@WillieManga because other M is an experimental game, I think the story would’ve benefited if it wasn’t too faithful to the Metroid timeline. However, when the game takes it off too seriously, has a lot of dialogue and takes place before fusion. That’s that in of it self is restricting.
@@orangeslash1667 As is Sonic '06's "What if Sonic took place in the real world" & "All the characters just spontaneously developed amnesia or something"...yes, that's ACTUALLY what they went with. @@bluestreaker9242 The problem With 06 is that the game was rushed for the anniversary, in addition of half of Sonic Team working on Sonic and the Secret Rings.
@@orangeslash1667 Very true. The game would have probably been more fun had it had more time to bake in the oven, but the aesthetics and the story hinged greatly on that design philosophy of "What if Sonic took place in the real world", and even if the game was fun...the anachronistic style & tone would have been too distracting regardless of, never mind the story being a hot flaming mess to say the absolute least. :/
Agreed. Reached Heart of the Swarm's ending before I couldn't go any further and by what I hear that ending for having all three would have made me pop a blood vessel. Probably foreshadowing to the current clustercrap the WoW storyline is with how terribad that got.
Man I love StarCraft 2. I rode that development hype train as a kid and I was not disappointed. A very nostalgic time for me. Well, in some ways the graphics seemed a little tuned back compared to alpha footage, but then again other parts of the graphics were way better so I don't know.
I liked Nuts and Bolts. I’ve always just loved the building mechanics and the music was catchy. Only real complaints I have are the art style and cliff hanger ending, but other than that I really love it.
From what I have seen the general consensus is that it isn't a bad game but a bad B & K game. Had they used another character I doubt they would have got the backlash they received.
It suffers from the problem I like to call "The developers/publishers couldn't read the room" There's a time and place for a drastic overhaul to a game series and it is almost NEVER as the highly anticipated revival of a franchise.
It’s not a bad game per say,but it isn’t a Banjo and Kazooie game. The problem with these types of games is that if they removed the franchise title,it’d sell decently and be rated higher(one example is CoD Infinite Warfare,if it was just called Infinite Warfare everything would have been fine for the game).
@@Altoryu I think Banjo Tooie is so good that even Rare can't top it, so they made a spinoff instead. The good news is that Gregg Mayles(banjo's creator is working on Ever Wild. If I can give my honest opinion on mighty number 9.: sure it’s handling behind the scenes could’ve been better, and there’s a few bugs. But it brought back one of the franchises I love Megaman. It opened the door for MM11 and to be honest I’m happy for that and would honestly like to see Beck and Call again
Honestly, same. In a lot of ways. It brought back Megaman in a big way and I loved 11, and am still hoping for my games in the X and ZX series. But, despite MN9’s MANY issues, I oddly really liked the characters. I loved the idea that the 9 Numbers were like a legit family, and the fact that they’ll help you out on other stages were great! Plus, I adore the designs of the characters, easily the best part to me.
It's been awhile since I played it, but I remember really liking it, hell I even got the dlc. I'm glad they tried experimenting with mechanics from games other than just the classic series, like the dash from X onwards, or taking inspiration from Axl's gameplay in the boost mechanic in dashing through enemies. Mighty No 9, no matter it's flaws, had really interesting ideas, if somewhat inconsistent execution. From making me actually care about the main 8 bosses, to introducing a new way to deal with bosses and enemies, to a pseudo Sonic-like approach to levels of "Go fast and have fun".
I'm going to say this now in advance before the video goes live: Disappointment is a largely subjective opinion. While there are some that can be considered objective, I think a list like this should be more personal.
I suppose we'll have to wait to see what metrics he uses to judge "disappointing" after all he could be using sale figures, he could be using overall reviews, or some other metric.
I'm surprised Fable isn't on here! 'Plant a seed & watch the tree grow as the story progresses.' Peter Molyneux is basically the staple of what NOT to do when hyping up games
2013 was a good year for "escort mission" games. Both Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us cracked the code for making them not suck, which is to make them undetectable by enemies and give you random bonuses.
Now the Top 10 Satisfactory Games; Games that, when announced, were hated or straight up ignored, but upon arrival, surprised everyone at how great they are
I admit, I'm an outlier who actually enjoyed FF13. I liked the linear pathways as it reduced my chances of getting ganked by something I wasn't ready to handle (in FF9 you can run into a Grand Dragon or a Garuda if you climb up the vines in the Moogle Room of Gizamaluke's Grotto, 10/10 do not recommend). I liked finding "grinding points" where I could spend some time increasing my levels to make the next portion easier. I liked that xp was linked so when the party split up and you switched to a different group you could easily level them up really quickly . I even liked the convoluted and confusing story, because I'm the kind of person who reads everything I can and putting the pieces together to make it coherent. I loved the characters - yes, even Vanille - and watching them grow, learn, struggle, and turn things around in their favor. About the only thing I didn't like about the game was Vanille's voice, as it was way to high and squeaky. I can't say anything about the sequels, as I haven't gotten around to playing them, but I enjoyed the original.
Hey, Josh. If you want a Sonic product that manages to take itself seriously, read the Archie and IDW comics. Those do a MUCH better job with the characters and world. Edit: Oh, and the IDW comics follow after the events of Sonic Forces.
@@dmcx-tv2308 I take it you never read the comics after Ian Flynn took over? Even before then, the comics managed to get into the characters (And have more consistent mythology) than the games have ever done. The echidna civilization got some serious development and expansion, all of the characters were given great backstories (Heck, even Charmy got his own backstory and went through some pretty serious stuff over the course of the series), characters died and stayed dead (e.g. Tommy Turtle, Knuckles' father), and, oh, yeah... SALLY GOT ROBOTICIZED AND TURNED INTO EGGMAN'S PERSONAL WEAPON. And don't even get me started on the stuff that goes on with Geoffrey St. John and Ixis Naugus. Now, how is that not taking itself seriously?
I liked Cyberpunk 2077. But I may have just got lucky that the biggest glitch I faced made one rock song play on loop _and_ made me invincible. Made killing the Voodoo Boys a truly epic experience.
Unfortunately they're many choices for big budget/ hyped games that can fit this criteria. I can definitely see cyberpunk for example being pretty high on this list if not #1 even.
Mighty No. 9 was expected for this list, but what I DIDN'T expect was him NOT bringing up THIS infamous line from the trailer: "Send the bad guys crying like an anime fan on prom night"
While I never got around to playing Mighty Number 9 due to already hearing about its reputation, I did get to play Inti Creates' other biggest disappointment: Dragon Marked For Death. The promotion was simple, but effective: After the Gunvolt series, a spiritual successor to the setting of the Zero and ZX Megaman eras had gathered a fanbase, they announced a spiritual successor to those games' gameplay, only this time in a dark fantasy setting and with multiplayer, local or online. The trailer's spritework looked amazing and they showcased the characters representing a Jack-of-all-stats, a tank (confusingly referred to as the Warrior), a DPS and a Mage. After playing the base game, it left a lot to be desired. One of the biggest complaints was the levelling system. In Gunvolt, your experience was collected as soon as you killed an enemy, and the level ups were fixed and largely inconsequential. In DMFD, you only obtained the experience by clearing the level you're on and the fact that it was described as an RPG meant they were extremely important. Despite the fact that all four classes have a designated job for each, the levels were not fixed, gave one stat point you needed to distribute resulting in Luck becoming a dump stat because it didn't tell you what it did and enemies gave you less EXP the higher your level was despite milestones already taking forever. Also, level layouts were repeatedly reused and always had a time limit that didn't stop ticking even when talking to someone. They were also so big and devoid of checkpoints that a 15 minute time limit was considered cruel. Also, thanks to the multiplayer gimmick, all classes suffer from overspecialization, which makes single player absolutely miserable, especially as the Warrior. Multiplayer is pushed even further by the fact that it was the only thing that gave you a safe EXP bonus. And if you decided to cut down on the annoyance by playing with friends, you either had to deal with the fact that local required a Switch console with a copy of DMFD per player or online required a subscription. And even then the game slapped you in the face, because you won't get the True Ending unless you beat the final boss solo, after beating him with all four characters in one save file, with the weapon he drops after beating the stage and without dying to him on that attempt and avoiding grabbing the sphere on either phase . Also, on the base game, all those level ups did was let you play higher level versions of the same stages you played before, many of them lambasted for having bosses be unwinnable by accident with classes on single player. That, and the fact that levelling up wasn't enough, you had to rely on equipment randomly dropping after was cleared. Which had level requirements and different upgrade tiers. Worst of all, Inti Creates made the game a live service. While some of the updates did fix some of the issues people had with the game, such as the Dragonblood bandit arc giving you more stage variety, the black market made items easier to obtain, the later updates would add a notice on the townsfolk offering new quests , adding the Bandit and Oracle classes, gave us a list of possible item drops for every stage and finally giving us a way to upgrade items into their next tier, they also either made base game flaws more noticeable or made more. The players had gotten so used to exploit a bug in one of the stages for the sake of avoiding the grinding that when it got patched and the level cap was raised, many players quit in frustration. As for the Bandit and Oracle, their story and gameplay were recieved very negatively- their story is presented as text only, they weren't the same Dragonblood bandit and Dragonblood oracle we had met beforehand despite still being part of the Dragonblood clan and weren't seen as particularly fun to play as. The update that made me give up on the game was the one advertising the game's True Final Boss. It didn't say where it was and I had to look it up. You find him at the bottom of the Cavern of Torment, a massive enemy gauntlet that was now over a hundred floors, long, featured base game superbosses as mandatory fights and this was after the game had increased the max character level again while still not making it easier to grind!
On Other M's Authorization thing, I remember reading a comment that would have fixed it or at the very least made more sense. Have Samus's Suit be hacked and Having to go through the game like that while Adam try's to unhack it or something like that. That way we get the Metroid staple of Samus Losing her powers make sense make. And That way we don't have Adam look like a sadist for not turning on her heat protection WHILE SHE'S IN A VOLCANO LAIR.
Since this game already cribs plenty from Fusion, they could even have it where Samus’s suit isn’t working properly after her battle with Mother Brain in Super. And so she can only get her upgrades by Adam manually uploading them to her suit from the federation’s database.
In the original Japanese, Samus intentionally forgoes the heat protection to prove how "strong" she is, because she's feeling very insecure about being around Adam and the rest of the team. Adam actually knocks some sense into her and tells her to turn it on out of concern.
As a hardcore Mega Man fan, while I don’t think Mighty Number 9 was very good, I didn’t find it to be the worst thing ever. When separated from the disappointment and hype, it’s just a hollow attempt at trying to recreate the glory of Mega Man, I did enjoy certain aspects though, such as the music and I liked some of the character dynamics between the MNs, glad they’ve at least salvaged the characters with a good series in Gunvolt. And hey, it was a wake up call to Capcom to revive the blue bomber, and the series is now more successful than ever, so I’d say the disappointment was well worth it :) Great video as always, Josh!
You know while so many guessed Cyberpunk or fallout 76 would be #1 I should of known what the "real #1" was for this list since you've talked about it a lot Josh.
Actually surprised that 76 never even got a mention considering how much of a colossal screw up that game ended up being with fail after fail to the point that Todd Howard became a meme for the bs he spewed at e3.
This is the first video of yours I’ve seen in a long time and man what a nostalgia trip. I was an actual child when I was watching your videos. Now I’m 24 and still think these videos are bangers
I really think the "authorization mechanic" would work in a prequel. That's exactly how you tell the story of how Samus decides to leave the federation behind. And the whole "stifling command structure" isn't just something that happens to Samus, but to us as the player. I'm playing the game being annoyed that I can't use armor or weapon until my boss says so. To riff on Egoraptor a bit, I feel that. I don't have to be told in some cutscene that "oh I didn't fit in with the rigid structure of the federation and chose to break out and be my own woman". No! I felt that, I was annoyed at Adam, I was annoyed at the federation regulations causing me to take constant damage in this FUUUUUUUUUUUUCKING region. So when Samus eventually goes "Yeah fuck this, I'm out" I would be all "Damn right, girl! We ain't about that shit!". That would be such a great use of that mechanic. But that's not what we got. What we got was a stupid story and the most badass competent woman since Ellen Ripley being demure and subservient to some asshole. YOU TOOK BADASS AND YOU MADE IT NOT BADASS, HOW'D YOU EVEN DO THAT?!
It wouldn't work in a prequel because Samus wouldn't have that technology in the first place. The stuff she keeps gaining and losing each game was mainly stuff she first found in Metroid 1.
@@k-leb4671 Sure, that's a very good criticism of my comment. I think I'd rather have a mechanical plot hole if it serves the narrative structure though. One way to solve it would be to have entirely different gear in the prequel.
Even so I think that considering that Hello Games owned up to their mistake and went out of their way to fix everything that it should have been much lower on the list.
Sonic 06 and Driv3r are supposed to be warnings to other companies. Do NOT rush, not even a bit. It doesn't matter if you wind up missing a deadline you want, let the devs finish and polish the game. Delay the release if you have to. Unfortunately, it seems this warning missed a lot of people, since we've been getting more broken games nowadays than before
Great video as always, Josh! These're my own personal thoughts on each of the choices, all of which I say rightfully belong on this list: #10: This game has to be super underwhelming, considering I hadn't even heard of it 'till now lol. #9: The FF13 trilogy is honestly one of the lowest points of the series for me for the reasons you mentioned. And while 13-2 did improve on it somewhat, especially in the gameplay department, Lightning Returns unfortunately undid anything good about either game. #8: Not a bad game, per se, but a bad Banjo-Kazooie game. It honestly should've just been marketed more as a spin-of instead of some big new game in an era where the franchise was basically dead. #7: We all know how rushed and buggy this game is, but after playing Project '06 for the past few days...it honestly makes me sad for what could've been. This truly feels like a proper sequel to SA2 and Heroes due to the large, open levels and satisfying focus on physics and alternate paths alongside speed. Of course, the actual product was so unfinished that those aspects unfortunately mean very little for the retail versions of the game. #6: Just goes to show how something great won't always come from someone great. Even the best creators have their duds, and the honestly laughable marketing didn't help the game much either. #5: Duke Nukem was honestly a product of his time, and so despite how long this game spent in development hell, it honestly would've been much better and have been a much less waste of money to just cancel it. #4: Well, the marketing was right in that it *did* make me cry like an anime fan on prom night. At least the Ray DLC was good, but at that point it was too little too late. At the very least, it did make Capcom finally revitalize Mega Man again afterwards with Mega Man 11. #3: Unfortunately promised way too much but couldn't deliver upon most of them. Unlike with Infanune with MN9 though, this was just a case of a small team being put in the spotlight for a project that ended up becoming overambitious, instead of a misguided and messy development cycle. #2: This game is the main reason other than Randy Bitchford that I dislike Gearbox. Especially when it came out that they took most of this game's resources for Borderland 2 and flat-out lied it in the trailers and marketing, much like Ubisoft with Watch Dogs. #1: Alrighty, this one is definitely gonna be a the longest. Apparently the localization for this game is the root for most of its issues, but even then I'd say it isn't a good Metroid game by any margin. Plenty of its ideas, while good on paper, were just poorly executed (the Deleter side-plot just being randomly dropped or Samus having an entirely out of place mental breakdown over Ridley are just some examples), and it easily character assassinated our favorite blonde bounty hunter. Who both narrates way too much, contributing to this gams’s awful pacing, and sounds as bland as robotic as Microsoft Sam. Then there's the forced and restrictive upgrade system, linear and boring environments and a lack of any atmosphere the previous games had that just make it overall a shell of its predecessors. Hence why even with its fun gameplay and honestly very engaging and well-designed bosses, I've had zero drive in returning to it. Thank EVERY lordy we're finally getting Metroid Dread next month to wash away this game's stink.
Cyberpunk 2077 for being a complete lie of a game. All I wanted was for my choices to matter, good gameplay and story, and for the game to be good, and look at that! I now know how it feels to learn the hype lesson!!
@@AkaiAzul A few times honestly. Fallout New Vegas, Deus Ex (at least mission to mission and possibly further in later games), The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante, a good few visual novels, and so on.
You missed a joke about Duke Nukem Forever. You remember Miyamoto's quote "A delayed game is eventually good but a rushed game is forever bad"? This is the antithesis of that quote.
The case with Banjo-Kazooie still hurts. Some *other* dishonourable mentions: Pokémon Sword & Shield: Yeah, we now have the DLC that adds more Pokémon and overall content, but seeing how the hype train derailed with the revelations surrounding the games' base Pokédex and the animation quality before they came out, after how Game Freak knocked it out of the park with Sun & Moon, that was heartbreaking. Also, so easy to overlevel. Sonic Forces: the game begins with the main villain of the franchise fulfilling the goal he had been aiming for since Day 1, something they had to have realized they could only do once, and *all* of the dramatic war story potential surrounding that was squandered. And 2017 was going so well for Sonic with the release of Sonic Mania, too. Capcom Fighting Evolution: Finally, a fighting game that the stars of Capcom get all to themselves, even characters from the often forgotten Red Earth. Then the game comes out to reveal itself as a mess of unrefined hodgepodge gameplay, combined with a pathetically small character roster. Trespasser: an ambitious game for it's era that the developers put so much faith in, and on paper it seemed like a fun, exciting adventure in the Jurassic Park world. That ambition was it's ultimate downfall, as the end result was a clunky, near-featureless and frustrating train wreck; yet it gained a huge, dedicated following that persists to this very day.
9:29 So, i'm about to start a fire in the comments section with this. Technically, Elise wouldn't be committing beastialty. Sonic is a being who has human-like intelligence, and can communicate in our language. Sonic can fully consent if he wanted to, therefore, not beatiality. The real issue here is that she's kissing a presumably dead Sonic, so necrophilia is actually the bigger concern here. This scene is still stupid though.
The scene should've been Knuckles reciting the "Chaos is power" mantra from the Adventure games while everyone wishes on the Emeralds to bring Sonic back. Heck, Tikal in spirit form could've come back to help out.
Final Fantasy XV should have been on the list. turns out switching directors half way through production and forcing people to watch a movie, a anime, play multiple dlc just to understand the story proved fatal for a game that had a lot of hype going for it, only to be a let down.
About the disaster that is Metroid: Other M, apparently some of its most hated concepts were things that the English translation team came up with. There's a retranslation floating around that attempts to keep to the Japanese script more closely and ensure the implications of the Japanese script are present in the English subtitles. How accurate it is, I can't tell, and the creator did acknowledge that they might be more charitable with the interpretations than is warranted, but the resulting subtitles are drastically different from the actual English version. The video is called "The Other M that never was". To highlight a couple of points about how big the changes apparently are: - The "PTSD scene": It's not actually a PTSD scene, but a twice-mangled visual metaphor for a core plot point. In the Japanese version, Samus is grappling with basically Impostor Syndrome, fearing that she's still a weak child underneath all that power armor and that despite her renowned adventures she hasn't actually accomplished much. So when Ridley pops up, her fear freezes her for a moment, since Ridley being back again is a pretty direct point towards the idea that she's weak and hasn't accomplished much. The scene isn't exactly good in Japanese either, but since this plot point about "Samus fears she is weak like a child" is _nowhere to be found_ in the official English version, the scene becomes nonsensical in English and our best explanation (PTSD) is basically an out-of-story handwave / game theory. - The Hell Run: Apparently not even in the game. Oh sure, the sequence of events and the gameplay section are still there, but it's not done out of Adam's insistence. Instead, it's Samus trying to pull some speedrunner sequence break shenanigans in-universe as a flex, with Adam going "Samus, what is wrong with you?! Activate the varia suit like a reasonable person!!" Adam in general is more reasonable here and Samus is far more headstrong, to the point of attempting self-imposed challenges as a way of dealing with her Impostor Syndrome. Whether being headstrong is a good character trait for Samus is debatable, but it's a far more on-brand one for her than "is submissive enough to subject herself to harm because father Adam said so". The retranslation doesn't make the game magically good and the direction the story goes is still pretty weird for a Metroid game. The bad gameplay is naturally completely unchanged, the story is still overall bad and not all scenes were any better in the Japanese version (eg. Adam shooting Samus in the back is still just as stupid), but the direction and core points of the Japenese version (Samus dealing with Impostor Syndrome) is far more palatable than what the English version presents (waifu-bait Samus uwu-ing over Adam-senpai). The game is still bad, but maybe a better translation would have limited the game to just "being bad", rather than the "is an unending garbage tire fire" we got instead. Maybe it would have been remembered as "the failed experimental Metroid game" rather than "the Metroid game so bad that it killed the franchise for the better part of a decade".

Likely Metroid: Other M made fans pine for the days when the serial manga from Nintendo Power Magazine told a more coherent story. And yes, I am talking about the serial manga based on the SNES game. But still...
I don't really have any personal disappointments considering I'm a pretty easy guy to please when it comes to games, but Sticker Star would probably be the closest to it, but even that let me have Color Splash and Origami King, which I think are good at worst, and fantastic at best. Also, I'd probably dislike Nuts and Bolts too if I was around for Kazooie and Tooie and the buildup for the game.
The funny thing about No Man's Sky, is that I knew someone who was OBSESSED with it when it was announced a d religiously followed its progress when I was on high school. If I remember right, he bought the game day one. I wonder what he thought of it.
not one word about Paper Mario? alright how about this for an idea, good Escort games like Bioshock Infinite? I remember Elizabeth being useful throughout the game
Maaaan if we had gotten a real Banjo-Threeie on the Gamecube... And that "shitting on its legacy" part of Nuts&Bolts also made its way into Yooka-Laylee, to the point that it seems like the game is ashamed of itself (which, in honesty, would be justified lol).
About Other M, it's even more depressing that most of the problems with characters and plot came with the english localization. I recommend you check out Lexicon Lookout's “The other m that never was”.
Blame Sakamoto. He demanded the English localization make Samus's voice acting be intentionally emotionless because said lack of emotion worked in Japanese.

@@tyrant-den884 Yes, because it was a traditional RPG Paper Mario game after Super Paper Mario was more of a platformer with RPG elements, and was being released on Nintendo’s hot new console, the 3DS. Meaning you could also play it on the go instead of at home, which largely suited RPGs. And it also looked gorgeous to boot. Too bad people wouldn’t realize ‘till after launch that it had a paper-thin (ha) story, no EXP or badge system, making combat repetitive and virtually useless, and a terrible and intrusive gimmick thay relied entirely on stickers. To say that it retained nothing good of the previous PM games would be an understatement, and while the future games would be an upgrade, they’d sadly never fully recover from the formula that Sticker Star established.

Another problem with Metroid: Other M is that it had WAY TOO MUCH dialogue and way too many cut-scenes for a 3D Metroid game. I think the two on here with the massive story problems on this list, Sonic '06 and Metroid: Other M, could easily be fixed if you tweeked one or two things each:
Sonic '06 - Get rid of Elise and replace her with Blaze. It gives Blaze a reason to be there, it actually connects the story to Sonic Rush, and instead of having Blaze unleashing Iblis through crying, she does so by giving into her rage, which actually works story wise
Metroid: Other M - Have it either be a story that takes place when Samus is just starting out as a Bounty Hunter, before the first game, or - as you said - have Adam's condescending attitude towards Samus be more of an inside joke

Take itself serio....naw
It's just the creators want a gag version of Sonic to be God among Gods in a nutshell. . .
John and Ixis Naugus.

ikr.
Unfortunately they're many choices for big budget/ hyped games that can fit this criteria. I can definitely see cyberpunk for example being pretty high on this list if not #1 even.
Cyberpunk got way better once it got patched though.
Mighty No. 9 was expected for this list, but what I DIDN'T expect was him NOT bringing up THIS infamous line from the trailer:
"Send the bad guys crying like an anime fan on prom night"
Couldn’t resist eh? XD
It's been so overused it's become groan inducing, and not in a good way.
It's better that way.
Low hanging fruit and all that.
Isn't this the same franchise with space pirates? Am I to believe that they couldn't just hack Samus's suit?
@@Doublemonk0506 or infect a virus in to her suits hardware

And hey, it was a wake up call to Capcom to revive the blue bomber, and the series is now more successful than ever, so I’d say the disappointment was well worth it :)
Great video as always, Josh!

I was about to get angry because it sounded like you were going to ignore NMS's progress. I'm glad you made sure to mention it's improvement.
Even so I think that considering that Hello Games owned up to their mistake and went out of their way to fix everything that it should have been much lower on the list.

It's a big part of it's history, it would be stupid to ignore it
Sonic 06 and Driv3r are supposed to be warnings to other companies. Do NOT rush, not even a bit. It doesn't matter if you wind up missing a deadline you want, let the devs finish and polish the game. Delay the release if you have to.

"Space... It's soooo beautiful." 🎵
Great video as always, Josh! These're my own personal thoughts on each of the choices, all of which I say rightfully belong on this list:
#10: This game has to be super underwhelming, considering I hadn't even heard of it 'till now lol.
Thank EVERY lordy we're finally getting Metroid Dread next month to wash away this game's stink.
wait... we're getting Metroid Dread NEXT MONTH!?

Me staring at Other M: Oh yeah, they're gonna have to put you back together....IN NORFAIR!!!!!
The case with Banjo-Kazooie still hurts.
Some *other* dishonourable mentions:
Pokémon Sword & Shield: Yeah, we now have the DLC that adds more Pokémon and overall content, but seeing how the hype train derailed with the revelations surrounding the games' base Pokédex and the animation quality before they came out, after how Game Freak knocked it out of the park with Sun & Moon, that was heartbreaking.

To highlight a couple of points about how big the changes apparently are:
- The "PTSD scene": It's not actually a PTSD scene, but a twice-mangled visual metaphor for a core plot point.
Wow, I remember this channel! And the content is still good! I’m gonna binge your channel now.
Daikatana, noticed on Rerez’s It’s Just Bad Games video, the N64(not this one) and Gameboy Color(much better) version are developed by Kemco, aka the guys who made *sigh* Batman: Dark Tomorrow, another disappointment game, Duke Nukem Forever, also noticed on Rerez’s It’s Just Bad Games video, too
