Hi everyone! What is your experience with Self-help?

    • @MartinGarden

Real good but especially Owen Cook to be honest. The marketing side of self help is the toxic part, if you just see thru that you can actually help yourself. Books are the best and teachers with integrity. And life is pretty simple, but that’s hard for most people to understand. My favorite book is power vs force about frequencies you can function at 😁! Self help made me the man I am today, but I can see thru the marketing stuff ☀️

My first book I read was about The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy at age 14 and I miss the initial feeling I got when I read it because it made me excited to believe I could change my life to however I want it to be as long as I use positive affirmations 😆😆

For me, self-help books can be a “reminder” of something I already know or practice. And for that reason, I find myself reaching for those self help books when I need that reminder. But I also know, it’s not the one stop shop cure as we are constantly evolving and changing.

Most helpful one is the Bible, and then all of Alfred Adler's psychological books and Karen Horney's. Through understanding the original misperceptions of our past, we can better find the proper way to become a better self.

Self help makes you lose confidence and feel inadequate a lot of the time.
I will say though, that the 4 hour work week was transformational for me when i was just starting in 2011.
But the issue for me was deeper, psychological issues where I didn't accept myself or considered myself not good enough.
More than self help, self acceptance is more impactful, I think.

Less self help! More philosophy! If you wanna be motivated, better is read literature. Read Papillon, and you will feel motivated to life for to enjoy the life (you, not a future imaginary better version of you) and the adventure it is, no for to achieve any goal, only enjoy the game.

Self-help, or personal development is SO important for the different areas in life we want to improve. But sometimes the danger can be that we end up consuming these books/ podcasts instead of actually doing the work. Crafting out the time to actually implement any of the self-help strategies is even more important than consuming more of that content.

Guilty as charged here. I fell into the self help trap and was stuck in it for many years. Just got fed up one day as I was spending the majority of my days reading and absorbed in my head all day long. It's an addiction indeed, where once I "fixed" something, I had this strong need to find my next "fix". It was never ending and at the end of it all, my happiness thermostat didn't increase. Today, I'm trying to "unlearn" by meditating and emptying my mind, quit social media, exercise, spend less, make food at home and just be in the present. So far, by doing this, there is this feeling of self acceptance as I am I have never felt before, it's really quite remarkable. Not totally there yet but it okay, there's no destination anyways, it's just a journey. Thanks for a great video, loving the channel.

That book greatly emphasizes on finding a teacher or an expert in the field you want to thrive who would help u and guide u achieving your goal (financial goal). That’s when i realized it doesn’t have to be always being independent or relying solely on yourself or self-help, but also reaching out to learn from others, from someone who had already achieved what u wanted to achieve

I think people are scared to face their own needs and would rather escape into ‘how to’ instead of just choosing for what feels right to them. Sometimes life just doesn’t give us time and space to sit with our own feelings and desires.. but then again, you only have this one life to live..

I remember getting into the whole self-help, it was much later in life and I got hooked. To a degree, I needed it, it was tough time in my life and the motivation to push through was quite helpful. Eventually I got through the rough patch and life was much better, but I was still into self-help books, and certainly found the information to be repetitive. You made a great point that the self-help industry is a multibillion dollar industry. Based on that information, I think their so many people struggling, in their own tough circumstances and they are trying to find a way out. At the same time, it could also be greed and the desire to become super wealthy. Either way, I think too much self help might not be a good thing. They do say that too much of anything can be a bad thing, even self-help. :) Like-149

    • @toliviawoods
      @toliviawoods 3 года назад +3

Totally agree. I'm very much into self help but just stick to a few books and just make sure I mix it up a little. I enjoy self help. They do get repetitive but also realized that they are repeated for a reason because whatever it is that's said, works for many. But it definitely gets to a point where you just need to live your live and experience things for yourself and learn.

To whoever stumbles across this comment, you are whole and you are complete (: You are not a project in the works, you are not an unfinished puzzle, a broken human or an imperfect machine. Self help tells us we need to constantly reach outward to find fulfillment, but our soul tells us that we must sit with ourselves in stillness to see that we already contain perfection within us. We already have all the seeds of our own desires. Productivity is not an antidote to low self worth, love, connection, and acceptance are.. as cliche as that sounds.

Self help material may be a could start, but it is typically not deep and enduring enough for the long-term. This might be a better approach: "Be yourself--not your idea of what you think somebody else's idea of yourself should be." --Henry David Thoreau

As im on a journey to live more sustainably, one day I realized that as much as it'd be good to make progress, there's really no rush in getting to the end. Often times, these books have a achievement-oriented tone to it. As you implied, shifting the focus to 'being' and developing self-awareness (eg body, emotional awareness) brings a lot more fulfillment.
As with most things, it's how one uses it intentionally, with reflection on how it applies to their own lives. For example, as someone with a sensitive biology, I chose to find alternatives to caffeine for better energy. The way I saw the world was transformed with that change.

I loved this video! It was really engaging and thought provoking. 💛 After viewing this, I realize that the self help books that have marked me the most are those that invite reflection and questioning of one’s self, as well as acceptance. Or simply memoirs, people sharing their thoughts and experiences, just as you are. This type of content proposes more sustainable solutions and less of a quick fix. I feel like the intention of these creators is more pure. As a person who cares a lot about others and their well-being, I do find that the industry is of value, but there is definitely some excess happening.

I guess it is an individual journey and it always seemed I was led to the next book I needed. Something I've learned over the years is to ask yourself if you're living your 'best life', and that the first step in getting what you want, is to get rid of what you don't want. That being said, avoid the trap of over analyzing yourself, especially when reading self help books. Consider what is being said, take what you can use, toss the rest and don't take yourself too seriously. None of us has it all figured out. Just enjoy the journey and celebrate small victories.

I cannot agree any less about what you said. I'm constantly switching from one self-help app to another, one book to another but I never feel satisfied. I feel like I'm trying to achieve something that doesn't exist.

Thanks a lot for sharing those thoughts. I found the distinction between self-help books and philosophy books very insightful and illuminating. I think it hit a point that I’ve been struggling with for a long time and clarifies why I felt much more motivated, powerful and “myself” after reading a Prentice Mulford book ages ago than any of many self-help books I’ve been half-reading and less applying since then.

Finally someone who talks about the truth;) I feeel so knocked out because of all the beauty and especially health ideals that showed up during the last years. It can be really toxic but though I also always look for these advice when i feel unmotivated.I really wanna get out of this vicious circle, because i realized that most of these advice make my life even more complicated. But Sophie, your channel helps me a lot to get out of this. It was the first time that I heard about simple living and I just do so. No longer any new health trend to follow along but a simple healthy diet and lifestyle. Thank you sooooo much;)

Experiences shared by others should only provide us inspirations not molders of which we will measure our own lives. The role of Self to ask questions and reflect with all the factors of our personal context has is what matters most.

    Excellent video amen.
I got started/hooked on early Tony Robbins. Then a couple of decades later it was Robert Kiyosaki.
I noticed at different times in life when I read them they always worked. But anything will work if you believe it will work. My problem has always been "Why" do I want this? I never answered myself to humble satisfaction and just said "no more."
A couple of months ago I decided to remove all the self help, business and success books from my life. You're so right about a constant diet of not feeling good enough can wear a person down for sure.
    Thanks for sharing,

Thank you for these videos, Sophie. I never read any self-help books, they always give me bad vibrations "mal rollo", and to feel that if I read some I will waste a time than I could invest in reading literature. The goal mus'nt be to be a better person, a better etc, must be love us like we are right now. Enjoy the moment. And no read mainstream advice. The goal must be to do your questions. The answers don't matter at all. You do philosophy when you think your all questions about how to do better the things, or simply ask why are you doing something.

sometimes i'm just so tired of self improvement and i will feel guilty about it. cuz all the videos, books and articles r telling us to become better, better version of ourselves, so shouldn't i picked up those advices and try harder?
this video is really reading my mind! explain why i feel this way and tell us: it's okay to not follow what "self-help masters" said, but be aware of yourself, ur current state. we r not chasing to be perfectly self-improved. tune in and listen, follow your heart, and it will find its way to guide you through your journey.✨✨

I am so surprised that I am the kind of person you talked about. I wasn’t conscious about this at all. I seem to unconsciously avoid questioning my relationship with self help contents cuz I’ve learnt so much through these contents and I thought these are never going to be dangerous in any sense. As you said, I looked for more contents after finishing a book or podcast or article or speech. I have more questions and desire for more. I feel I am never enough and I am being more anxious. I seem to be always learning something but now I feel like it’s toxic cuz I can’t let myself rest and just do nothing for a day. It feels so inspired to finish self help contents. It makes everything look possible. Every day right after I wake up, I devour anything that might make me feel like motivated; then I can feel more energized to start my day, which is a really unhealthy way. I’m really grateful that you make this video. I need to review my relationship with those contents.

I've read many of the same books, and others not on the list. I went through a "self-improvement" journey over a several year period. What I found is that "self-help" IS effective. It's not that there is one magical book that makes the difference, it's more like each book has some gold-nugget in it and if you take what's valuable from many sources and combine them, that can make a REAL difference. My efforts were highly successful and resulted in me accomplishing some BIG goals I had. Books cant "fix" a person just by reading them. But if someone is really driven and commits to putting in a solid effort over an extended period of time ( using some ideas from the books ), great things can happen!

Very useful information that you are sharing! Thank you for that! I have read several books of self care theme. And I realised that they are all the same. I need just one. They are not like novels with diferent stories. They say all the same with just diferent word. In 2018 I began fitness as a self help - I become more firm and in better shape, I like how I looked but after three times in which I had experienced back pain after workouts and after I found out that I am feeling obligated in some way to workout, I realised that I was involved in a fitness wellness industry just for buying new gears, new supplements, reaching new misterious goals and etc. Everything was "must" to feel good but my body was saying me it was'nt. I even gained some weight and despite the fitness goals I've reached they didn't come down. Untill.... I returned to myself. To my truth. I stopped. I returned to yoga - which I was practising till 2018. In the end of summer 2021 I returned to it. I lost the few pounds immediatly. Maybe because I realised that I am good enough without any goals which we have to achieve. I started listening to my body, to my soul and now I feel amazing. I don't buy any help books anymore, any fitness subscriptions or gears or any "powdered" food. I don't buy happinness. I think every body should sit and listen to their own wishes and needs and not following someone elses' blindly. Thank you for the inspiration to think about this!

I am so happy someone finally mentioned it. I am well educated person, who also studied lots of self help books and to numerous seminars.
I would like if I said some of them didn't have great impact on me but with a time I noticed similar pattern Sophie is mentioning. I felt like I was always lucking something every time I read another book, like if I read another one it would the "it" moment. Well it wasn't. I realised that like spent on looking outside of yourself for answers and following grand coaches, teachers and authors bought me no where near where I want to be. It's a bit like beauty industry...you feel you have to buy all this products to make yourself look beautiful where in fact it all starts with finding out who you re as a person, accepting yourself and looking into what is your Tue want and desire. Once I started doing that I moved so much quicker towards real happiness...
