      Nowadays, "56K" and "dialup" are basically synonymous to those who don't know, but in 1998 56k was brand new and almost nobody had it - and if you *did* have it, you almost certainly didn't get the full 56k.
      Most people would've still had 33.6 or 28.8 which was even slower, and there were even still some people with 14.4. Downloading a 3MB file at 14.4 would take almost an hour - ironic for a speedrun video.

      The decision-making process is very shortsighted at the best of times. He even said back then that the lure could be about the same time as the previous strategy and that it was more consistent because of the Doak odds but he also said that no one had really bothered to try it. Pretty surreal that it took another two years after he mentioned it for someone to try it.

    This is why I'm a big proponent of running on your own and coming up with your own routing and strategies before diving into existing speedrun routes and strats. No only do you gain a better understanding of the level/game this way, but you also never know when you might come up with something that seems perfectly sensible to try but has not yet occurred to the community at large (or worse, was tried and prematurely discounted as not viable).

      Yeah there are a few stages left I think like this in the game unfortunately - Theres a Bunker 2 Agent strat or B2AROG meaning reverse OG mainline - There was also a shooting lure at the time on the reverse route however others are saying its non beneficial...not sure its been tested though on the proper cut scenes even though some say they've "tested" it all with no avail...the reverse mainline on B2A was pretty close to the mainline now thats not reverse (time wise) - I dont think it would beat the WR the B2AROG line however it has high chances to tie in my opinion...

      I don't know how familiar you are with current Hitman WoA speedruns, but luring with shots is incredibly useful in many ways. There's the obvious usage of distraction shots. There's the implementation of firing at guards three times to either A) move them out of the way so you can get by, or B) having the guard NPC come towards you since they are your target.
      There's also a more recent strat found on Hokkaido. On that particular level, some doors can only be opened if you are wearing particular outfits. If you lure an NPC with such an outfit to a door, 47 will be able to open it.

    always nice to see new goldeneye strats. i've long wondered if something new would be discovered for control. i remember realizing as a kid that the second story balcony overlooking natalia is within the radius that she still works on the satelite and that all enemies that attack natalia spawn on the third floor and climb down the stairs at the center (then either move left, right, or down). whether enemies attack natalia or bond are also identifiable by their hat color (i believe black attack bond, red/blue attack natalia). so you can just stand on the balcony facing away from natalia and pretty safely fire at the center stairway. some guards spawn to your left and right, but they all attack you not her. the problem is getting to the balcony requires moving outside the radius she'll work on the satelite and potentially doesn't set you up as well for getting to the level exit once she finishes. but this strategy still seemed way safer for full run games and had some merit for casual play that i was always surprised no one talked about (plus the pile of guns lying in one area after the protect sequence ends is very satisfying to pick up).

    • @biblicallyaccuratecockroach
      @biblicallyaccuratecockroach 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@drunyon214 If I had to guess it means if Bond moves too far away from Natalia, her script will stop and she'll stop doing what she's supposed to until you get back close enough for it to resume. Probably something to do with hardware limitations built into the game that stop processes running further away from the player to spare system resources and allow the game to actually run. Likely the devs never intended for the player to leave Natalia in that section, so they didn't program an exception for her script to keep working while you're out of the usual range for NPCs. Remember the average mid-range smartphone today has several orders of magnitude more processing power than the strongest gaming console then, only powerful industrial computers even came close to a modern smartphone. Both The Matrix and The Phantom Menace were released in 1999, two years after Goldeneye, and that was the peak of CGI back then, taking weeks to months of processing for each scene to be spit out of custom-made computers.

    There's even a SECONDARY shooting lure that I brought up several months back on the forums which is on RI 's back up RUclips page where he gets 53 HIS FIRST attempt on SA (well he didnt show the end time and suggested it was 53...) This 53 of his was done with a bad trev as well as going too far in 2 spots..(the lure spot and the return to doak area) - Now having the Bad Trev (BT) is probably losing .8 itself so that brings in 52 as I timed his 53 at 53.34 ..then his 2 other blemishes going too far in each spot may have gotten a high 51 as the rest of the run looked optimal/ideal - This SECONDARY SHOOTING LURE probably is as good/fast as the old route time wise however falls about .5 seconds short from Illu's found mainline shooting lure (which puts it about equal to the OG mainline) ...thats unless this secondary lure somehow becomes more optimized from the few attempts that have been run as RI literally got a low 53 his FIRST ATTEMPT at trying with the SECOND shooting lure (which is a totally different shooting lure than the new Illu found shooting lure) - Lastly this second shooting lure though is ONLY good for the BEST DOAK LOCATION and DOESNT encompass double doak odds which the other shooting lure does ....

    I absolutely have to agree with the video quality back then having a sort of "vibe". I lived in a rural area, and our internet connection was horrendous. Even a 3MB video would take multiple minutes to download. Not to mention, ever connection was metered back then, so you would have to ask for permission before downloading "such large files". And then you would rewatch this choppy, low-resolution clip over and over and over to learn all the secrets you can. It was truly a magical time.

      Check out the Speedlore series from Goose (another Goldeneye runner). It's exactly what you're looking for. He's been doing them for years and has covered every level on every difficulty at this point. He starts with the very first known world record for a level and then slowly works all the way up to the current world record, showing videos of the runs and explaining the different strategies and how they have evolved over the years.
      Most of his recent Speedlores have been about DLTK (a different category of speedrun) and other stuff, so you may have to go back a year or two to find the full level Speedlores. Some of them are getting a little outdated as new strats have been found since then, but it's a good place to start if you want to learn the history of Goldeneye's levels.

    I used to try getting enemies in Wolfenstein 3D to open locked doors so I didn't to go all around the level to get the gold and silver keys. In fact in episode 6, floor 3, it was an officer that opened up the locked door near the beginning allowing me to practically speedrun the floor going straight to the secret level. That is the closest to lure strategy you get.

The bit about getting emotional over a strat being replaced…I feel the same when Super Mario 35 was discontinued, and when CSGO was changed to CS2. Change can be difficult to deal with, especially when it’s forced on you.

      Facility was definitely hard but I think Caverns 00A was also a hard cheat for me to unlock. The target time was like 9:30 but the level was very long and full of guards with AR-33s which meant that you could only get hit a few times before dying. Multiple times I missed it by a few seconds and finally squeaked by with only a few seconds to spare.
