Standard vs Free Float Handguards

- Join me as we test any affect on accuracy by changing standard to free float handguards on an AR-15. Using a Rock River Arms AR15 with a stainless 16’’ barrel featuring a midlength gas system and a .223 Wylde chamber. Starting with the standard handguards, we take shots at the range and then change them out to free floating without making any other changes to the rifle. Shooting at targets with 55 and 62 grain ammunition, we test for differences in accuracy when grouping with the different handguards.
Two reasons to consider using a classic handguard worth considering.
1.) Very inexpensive
2.) Very Lightweight
Obviously you need to stack the needs of you have for your rifle, but certain builds, the classic is ideal.
Last competition i attended, i brought a car15 style rifle with a pencil barrel. - it was blazingly fast. Heated up quickly, but if thr barrel was cool, i was still hitting my 400 yard targets. And people were just fawning over how lightweight it was.
Good food for thought Mr. Smith! I bought a PSA pencil barrel (the FN make ones) for my daughter. Wanted to make it as lightweight as I could.
Ya I didn't even bother with a low profile gas block I just chopped the sight and bayonet lug off the a2 and fit a free floating hand gaurd xD
How to have fun with an angle grinder? 😁 I'm sure it works!
best thing you can do is buy several types of ammunition and see which one your rifle likes. It does not always mean more expensive ammunition will group better. My PSA rifle with a 18 inch chf barrel gives me 1.5 inch groups using cheap federal 223 ammunition. With my reloads it shoots sub moa. My reloads are not match grade reloads. There are a couple benefits to not having a free floated rail on this platform. One you have a fixed front sight and two the gas tube is more secure.
I have one of those PSA 18 inch Stainless Steel barrels with the Wylde chamber. Is that the one you have? If so, which bullet weight does yours like best?
@@texmexshoots the 18 inch barrel I have are the Cold hammer forged chrome lined barrel made by FN sold by PSA. I would say it shoots 55 grain and 62 grain bullets equally well. My favorite old is 24.5 grains of shooters world AR plus powder with a Everglades 55 grain bullet.
@@theintrovertedcalifornian5047 Nice! Thanks for the info.
That's interesting, thanks. I agree, the groups with the free float handguard are a little tighter. And it looks a little sexier.
It did come out looking nice. Thanks Frank!
That ammunition is fine a friend of mine is shooting portuguese ammunition made in the early 80 with no issues at all.
Thanks for watching. I actually shoot a good bit of the PMC stuff. The Silver Bear was a case of 1000 I bought probably over a decade ago when ammo wasn't as crazy expensive as it is now.
I look at it like there's just no reason not to use free float
Yeah. Unless you just want some standard hand guards for their classic look (which I still like), free float are better for accuracy and much more versatile. Hope you have a great weekend!
@@texmexshoots you too brother, good video!
Not sure how you pulled on the sling and pulled the trigger. Free float looked better to me as well. Thanks for the fun video.
I probably did not explain myself well. I tightened the sling around my arm and pulled it back, keeping tension on it as i pulled the trigger. I did not hold the sling in my hand. It might have been better if I had put my camera on the other side to show how I was doing it, but I was concerned about the cases being ejected in that direction.
Thanks for watching and I hope you are having a great weekend!
Thanks for the comparison. I think the free floating hand guard actually gave better results overall. The group size may have been about the same, but just looking it appears the free float made it a bit more consistent.
I agree. Was surprised to see the effect even at a closer range with budget ammo. Hope you are having a great weekend!
Maybe in the future you can pick up a box of some "match grade" ammo and let us know how good a group you can get with that particular rifle.
Thanks again for watching! For some reason youtube glitched with my last response.
I plan on doing a comparison soon with a PSA rifle that also has a wylde chamber, and I'll get some better ammo.
A like & a comment for the algorithm.
Thanks! I very much appreciate it.
Is you're scope pointed directly at the fsp? 😂
Thanks for watching! Love the pooch in your thumbnail.
Believe it or not, the front sight base did not interfere much with the scope. At the lowest magnification, I could see a bit of a shadow at the bottom, but that's about it.
