It might be a sunflower sea star (star fish). It is one of the largest species of star fish to exist. They have more limbs than a regular starfish.

Love all the awesome sunflower starfishes. It appears to me when the food was at the bottom they had to come into eat and was easier to eat then hanging upside. That one pot I watched, yes I watched another pot, it had it on the bottom which made more sense. First nothing could eat it unless they came in, when it’s on the top it looks like anything could snack on it from the top and never come in. Also when it was on the bottom the amount of crabs and fish chowing was amazing. They all wanted a piece and could climb over each other vs more limited space when you have to hang. Just an observation. I would just put the food cage to the bottom and not the top and do a experiment. Just seems more inviting to crabs, because everyone wants to be where the crowd is, and it everyone is hanging from the top no one will see them. Want those crabs to have fomo!

Seems like an inefficient design if the crabs have a difficult time getting in.
Quality over quantity, only the strongest get in. Perhaps you can pause and think before you comment next time.

As already commented, Deadliest Catch never showed this. And they have more camera gear than anyone. This is so fascinating. I never realized how smart they are. Makes me feel bad when people drop them into scolding hot water and boil them alive. I imagine they feel every ounce of that pain. I remember living in FL and we cooked crab. You could literally hear them scream when they hit the boiling hot water

The larger and very curious fish in the video are Sculpin. The flounder-type fish are either baby Halibut or another fish we call Arrow Tooth, which look similar to Halibut but are not as tasty. Of course, the crab are Dungeness crab. The star fish are actually sun fish. It is amazing, and annoying, how sun fish can squeeze into the small opening of the crab pot.

Super late to the party! I was shocked how long it took the crab to figure out how to get in. Caught pretty much everything but crab LOL. And one even escaped.
But it’s like all the movement the crabs make when they smell the bait attracts other crabs to see what all the fuss is about! I love crab, but lobster, shrimp and oysters are my favorites!
The starfish was like: fk! I came here for crab food, not to be the food of crab!!

Belatedly, Big Toni realized he was trapped with a few very unsavory multi tentacled monsters. All his friends were gone... he had never felt more alone. Making matters even worse, the tips of his left claw were suddenly itching.
I'm only a few mins in, but so far the first and only crab I have seen is a real idiot. It tried for several mins to access bait from behind the camera.... and now it's trying to get into the trap via the opposite corner..... Jesus!!!

Wow that first crab - I had NO idea they were so fast and SO strong. That crab really breaks out some muscles trying to get in through the corner. I guess crab meat IS muscle and lots of it - they look strong as can be.

+Lord Byron i think that is a regulation for some areas to have the round hole that will allow small enough crabs out but keep the regulation sized ones inside.

BrO! You have your pot UPSIDE DOWN.. The bait is suppose to be at bottom of cage.. The crabs can feed on top without even entering the cage.. Also you need weights zip tied alone the bottom of your cage to keep it right side up.. see your doors are suppose to open inward from the top ,so when the crabs get in they fall down so when another crab comes in, a different one can't escape.. also if your pot gets moved around, and sand is builds up in front of the doors..the crabs can't open them.. But yeah Bro.. your pot is Upside Down my man.

looks funny when you play it at x2 speed. also quite sad. when the crab managed to crawl into the cage it looks like he was frantically trying to find a way put. when he was outside it looks like he was using the cage as a back scratchier.

No light rigged. The camera was simply tied to the crab trap.

Makes me wonder if you were to put some dark backing on the crab pot door the Crabs would find it easier. Making it look like a hole rather looking similar to the rest of the cage. Might not be permissible maybe???

The State of Alaska requires a current fishing license for harvesting shellfish. There are regulations for how many pots you can have and how many legal-sized crab you can keep.

What is the legal sz. for Dungeness crab in Alaska? Here in Washington State it's 6-1/4" in Puget Sound and 6" on the coast.
The legal size for Dungeness crab in Alaska is 6.5 inches notch to notch. Only male Dungeness crab can be kept for consumption.
