The Grass Roots never seemed to get their due outside of the time that the group was putting out hits. My dad was a big fan and that's how I was exposed to the group's music back in the early 1980s.
Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)," The Doobie Brothers' "What A Fool Believes," and many of the early to mid 1980s hits by Christopher Cross are pretty significant "Yacht Rock" songs that the guys haven't got to yet on the channel as well. To a large degree, the guys have just "scratched" the musical water's surface when it comes to "Yacht Rock." 😂

The part that really hit was his voice - smooth & sexy & then the lyrics. You can't get better "lines" than you can find with this poetic version - & the good part is that he is warning her of EXACTLY what his intensions are - & how it will be delivered - in a sailboat at night with the moon shining down. It is up to her to decide if she is interested (at all - she doesn't have to go for all that he is hoping. Just let him know that he may be on the right track if he keeps it up.) As you said "it's fire."

Not sure how many might be aware but Louis Johnson also played bass on Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)." This was with McDonald on vocals/keyboards, Toto's Steve Lukather on lead guitar, Toto's Jeff Porcaro on drums and Greg Phillinganes (Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson) on clavinet (the awesome keyboard sounding instrument that may be most well known in Stevie Wonder's "Superstition"). Furthermore, Lukather, Porcaro, Phillinganes, and Johnson would also all play on multiple tracks of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album (produced by Quincy Jones, who was associated with The Brothers Johnson) at around the same time as working with Michael McDonald. Talk about an absolute "best of the best" support band. Every player was a total all-star and it still shows today in all that music. 😁

I also love the way the lyrical rhyming scheme follows the A-B-A-B pattern, where first and third lines rhyme, as well as the second and fourth. You don't get that very often in pop music. I saw them do this when they opened up for Wild Cherry at Mississippi State somewhere around 76 or 77. I was like 12 and the entire arena filled with a certain smoke. They gave us a different type of atmosphere that we were used to.
My best friend and I went to our moms and they seem to enjoy the smoke as well.
I’m 59 now and I do remember that xylophone solo.

"Moonlight Feels Right" is the debut single recorded by the American band Starbuck. Written and produced by Bruce Blackman, the song was released in December 1975 but did not chart until April 1976. The song features a prominent marimba solo by co-founding band member Bo Wagner, who in the early 1970s worked as a studio musician in Los Angeles, appeared on The Lawrence Welk Show for three years and toured with The 5th Dimension, Roger Williams and Liberace. Wagner claimed the performance that ended up on the record was his first attempt, really just a rehearsal. But everyone seems to have realized they wouldn’t get it any better.

I love this song. I was just listening to it last week. Windows down and sunroof wide open. I just listened to him talking about how he came up with the lyrics, the arrangement as well as programming the Moog.
They tried to make them take the marimba solo out. Bruce Blackman put his musical foot down.

For Ty, This song was featured in a movie called "Stuck on You," don't know if he ever saw it. Evidently Matt Damon is in the movie. I'm so glad you guys did this song, I was in fourth grade when this came out and literally all of my sisters and me loved this song We couldn't turn the radio up fast enough when it came on. Please do another '70s song, by Nick Gilder, called "hot child in the City". I'm sure you've all seen the movie Big with Tom Hanks. I love this song, it's seventh grade all over again.

I was looking forward to this reaction as soon as I saw that you guys would be doing it. I was only 10 years old at the time of its release, but I immediately bought the 45 (& still have it after all these years)! It is one of the best summertime tunes ever & later on, after having joined Jr. High, then High School band & becoming a lifelong drummer/percussionist, I guess its obvious why I love this song. Although I tried, I never mastered that double mallet solo!!!
