You guys upvoted this as one of the top songs in our marathon community post. Yet here we see, "This isn't a one hit wonder." I have a feeling next year's marathon will be easier for you all and for us as well 😂 We're still having fun, though.
At the least, I hope the countless "This isn't a one hit wonder" and "Where's Ty?" posts are helping the channel on RUclips's algorithm. #Silverlinings
To achieve your goal for next year's marathon, don't even think about suggesting anything to do with "what's a one hit wonder?", "how do you know a song is disco?" and "what's a yacht rock song sound like?" 😂
Please react to Bee Gees songs
Alive.
Living Eyes.
Kiss Of Life.
@@user-lq4qe7pj9sI’m laughingggg and I appreciate this comment!
Ok, but she was a TWO-HIT wonder, which is certainly close to the stated category of song. Great reaction, guys!
@@sarahzentexas Thanks for the reply, Sarah. Most times, the best reaction to these types of situations is to try to find the absurd and laugh. 😂
the Bee Gee's are descendants of King Midas because everything they did was gold.
She was not a one hit wonder , she is one of the original Disco divas
Yep, she had two other Top 20 hits, "Love Me" and "Hello Stranger," the year before this one. "Love Me" was also written by the Gibb brothers, and "Hello Stranger" was a cover of the Barbara Lewis hit from the '60s. But this one is the biggie, went all the way to #1.
Nah, Donna Summer is the Queen of disco.
@mikeroche9986 they said one of.
One of the greatest movie soundtracks EVER!!
Absolutely!
I can't believe you guys haven't heard of Jesus Christ Superstar! Yvonne Elliman sang the part of Mary Magdalene, her big song, I Don't Know How to Love Him is fantastic!
They were born in the 90’s.
❤ it's weird the younger generation not knowing the monumental stuff we grew up with. I'm thankful to have been alive in the 70s and old enough to remember this great decade.
@@tracycampbell3060 Well, Ryan, who was born in either ‘95 or ‘96 probably doesn’t remember dial-up internet but can clearly recall the debut of Facebook (and Chris Brown). And for many millennials and Gen-Z, playing GTA and other games are largely how they were exposed to songs from previous decades. The Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack is not something that was passed on to other generations (unlike, say, the Saturday Night Fever hits). I’m 52 and I only know JCS bc my mama loved it, playing it sporadically in my upbringing. My parents met in Hawaii so Yvonne being from Honolulu was also a draw. Personally, never cared for “If I Can’t Have You” but I know how it’s the jam for many Baby Boomers. ✌🏽
Well sung but the theme of the song is rotton
@@gabrielmcdonnell8699 This is always so weird to hear for me. I knew 40's/50's stuff in the 80's. Older stuff is even more available today, which is why I like these reaction channels.
Every song was a hit in Saturday night fever
Pretty-much.
Her song "I Don't Know How to Love Him" charted in 1971. Six years before "If I Can't Have You".
Didn't know that! I loved Jesus Christ the Savior and seen the movie when I was a teen❤ wow she was that singer😊
Bee Gees were genius songwriters. This song is FIRE!
Pretty damn close to the quinnessential Disco song. Great production sung by a sultry and beautiful woman . Written by the Bee Gees no less
Ahhh, yes, Hawaiian beauty Yvonne Elliman who was discovered by Robert Stigwood (The Bee Gees' manager) when she appeared in the London run of "Jesus Christ Superstar" playing Mary Magdalene and singing the hell out of "I Don't Know How to Love Him." She is one of the backing vocalists on Eric Clapton's "I Shot the Sheriff."
And on the other songs on his 1974 classic album _461 Ocean Boulevard._
Also "Everything's Alright" from "Jesus Christ Superstar".
~ A true one-hit-wonder written by the Bee Gees was done by Samantha Sang called, "Emotion" . It's another dicso style song by them and it reached #3 in 1978.
Barry Gibb sang backup vocals on this. (I checked with Wikipedia to be sure.)
You guys are so much fun to watch! 🌟🏆🌟
Thanks for the post, Brigitte. I second your thought. The guys better trademark "disco chair dancing" or they're going to lose out to John Travolta making millions off that idea. 😂 Nick's line of "Somebody help ya!" In the video and Ryan's statement "Smells like clean!" in the outtakes are gold as t-shirt merch ideas. 😀
Ryan, I think you’re referring to “Flashdance” featuring the song “Maniac” lol. But you guys need to see Saturday Night Fever to truly get “ disco” at its best. Great review this is one of my all time favorite songs to sing, ❤️
Bee Gees performed and/or written songs stayed #1 on the Billboard charts for 2 or 3 straight months in 1978. Them, Brother Andy and this song
Saturday Night Fever! 🕺
The sunglasses were perfect for this classic 😎
💨✌🏽
I harken back to Ty’s description of a “one hit wonder”. This IS the one hit I think about when I hear Yvonne Elliman. Makes me happy right down to my bones.
Love, love, love this song! I expect you guys will love it too… love all the brass in this song!
Love this song! I also really, really love another one hit wonder from this album, Disco Inferno by The Trammps. When I think of disco, I think of this song! Awesome base, great vocals, amazing.
Burn, baby, burn!😀
Burn baby Burn!
“Who’s not enjoying that?!”
Exactly
You have to see the movie. Epic dance moves !
Yvonne maybe is a one hit wonder, but the song itself belongs to the hundreds hit wonders! The Bee Gees wrote three #1 hits in one day!
Guinness World Records lists Gibb as the second highest-grossing songwriter in history behind McCartney. Gibb's career spans more than 60 years. He and his brothers were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 as a member of the Bee Gees
Another great hit McFadden & Whitehead - Ain't No Stoppin Us Now - you'll be dancin ' in your seat.
I can't get enough of this hit❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Man, did I love this song! I wasn't old enough to go to clubs but I danced the hell out of this song.
She also sang another hit "Hello Stranger" which is worth a listen.
Also “Love Me”!
What a great voice! Yvonne Elliman! and a great song- it makes you dance! You HAVE to watch Sat Night Fever. It was HUGE.
One of the greatest disco songs ever. Top 3 easily. Gorgeous gal and voice.
Thanks for the post, Anthony. I was glad to see the guys include another female artist in the marathon.
She was on an episode of Hawaii 5-O. I saw it on reruns. I love this song.
Please, after this, please check out the official music video of Bee Gees, "Too Much Heaven"...
The movie takes people by surprise because it is dark. It's like Taxi Driver... but with dancing. 😁
One of my favorite all time songs, however, Yvonne was not a 1 hit wonder. She had hits with 'Love Me,' and 'Hello Stranger,' among others!!!
"I don't know how to love him" from JC Superstar also charted.
This song is fire! Always has been.
Another reason why songs back in the day were well crafted, had substance and style ❤❤
This one has an extraordinary arrangement and orchestration. The instrument that stands out for me in the arrangement is the French horn; it's given a strong counter-melody at the end of the chorus. The drums are also excellent; more movement than the typical disco groove.
Thanks for the post, Dave. I saw a documentary a couple years back about The Bee Gees. In discussing this era, Barry Gibb talked about how many of the most popular and well known songs were written in the studio just before they were recorded. One of the brothers would come in with some notes on a sheet of paper and the three would work the song out with their band in real time. That is just astounding!
You need to listen to "I Don't Know How To Love Him" to truly appreciate her beautiful voice.
Saturday Night Fever is an incredible movie--and not just for the music and dancing. It goes *hard* (if you know, you know 😯). The Bee Gees' music and lyrics captured that mix of glitz and hedonism of the 70s, with that constant undercurrent of grit and darkness of the time.
This was an amazing time in my life (high school) and this, of course, was part of an incredible album.
Thanks for the memories, Boys. Luv ya!
Anything, the Bee Gees touch is a hit The way she’s Singing it was perfect You wanna get up and boogie
The dancing woman movie is Flashdance. The Bee Gees wrote for so many other artists Chain reaction Diana Ross, Heartbreaker Dionne Warwick, Islands in the Stream Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton and Woman in love for Barbara Streisand. Disco song by Bee Gees You should be dancing. ❤❤
Wow. I was a toddler when this came out. It's deeply buried in my consciousness somewhere but I haven't heard this in decades. And for some reason right now it sounds like the best song ever! And the lyrics are surprisingly dark! Super danceable tune with such dark lyrics, quite haunting 🔥🔥🔥
You know you like it because it’s written by Bee Gee’s. It’s just a given that it’s going to be a banger. Not only are their songs lyrically amazing but the musical compositions are always amazing as well. They don’t just ‘do enough’ they make it sound great!!
The BeeGees wrote this and many many other songs that got them into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. ❤❤❤❤❤
Massive disco tune with that signature Brothers Gibb sound.
I'm really surprised to see that you're reacting to Disco? Wonderful! This was an extremely popular song in the 70's after Saturday Night Fever came out. Disco was huge, I loved it. Another great song with two lady entertainers is A Taste of Honey, "Boogie, Oogie, Oogie!" You have to react to Taste of Honey, another Disco song you will be pleasantly surprised.
This is an awesome song, guys. You still have to get POCO on. "Heart of the night" great song, guys!
That is a great song by Poco.
Juice Newton also does a real good song which is named "Heart Of The Night."
Great song!!! An all time favorite! Just played in the car this afternoon. Can't wait!
Yeah, you should watch the flick. Despite the upbeat groove of the tracks the movie is actually somewhat dark, and interesting.
Very dark.
Top 5 female voice in my book. The song is fire!
Not just one of the best disco songs, but one of the best songs of the 70s! The film is also one of the best films of all time. Check it out.
Thanks for the post, Ben. I couldn't agree with you more about the song. I'm not a big fan of disco, but this tune is just amazingly good.
❤ this album was a massive cultural hit. Saturday Night Fever was a movie so many people saw . I was young when this came out, my family had this album.
Love, Love this retro disco Jam! Been on my playlist for a while. Glad you guys liked it! Watch the movie. It’s a trip!
💃🏻🕺🏻
Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
This is the chorus of Get Together by the Youngbloods
Probably one of the two greatest one hit wonders of all time. Maybe if this post gets 20 👍 the boys will take notice…. Come on people now!
The movie is actually pretty dark in terms of theme and story revolving around the life of Tony Manero (Travolta) but the music and dance scenes are legendary and carry it forward in a memorable / unforgettable manner. The entire soundtrack epitomizes the 70's disco scene and vaulted the Bee Gees into super stardom.
The Bee Gees wrote this song, and I've heard them sing it. She did a much better job of it, imo.
Thank you guys for this marathon. It's been a blast.
No, she did not
I LOVE ❤ this song!
You have to see this movie guys.
Now we need to hear some Abba and Donna Summer once the one hit wonder marathon is over!! Donna is THE Queen of disco, and ABBA was one of the most popular groups in the world!!
Evelyn "Champaign" King. "I don't know if its Right " is along these lines and love it even more. ❤
Also we would definitely watch you guys do a reaction to the movie!! 💯👍
I danced to this in club's all the time . Still do ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Interestingly enough, Yvonne Elliman's role in Jesus Christ Superstar as Mary Magdalene also gave her her first hit single with ‘I Don’t Know How To Love Him’, which was also the title of her 1972 debut for Polydor. Her co-star, Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, subsequently signed her to Purple’s UK Label. She sang lead vocals on “Everything’s Alright”, a scene where Mary Magdalene tries to quell a heated exchange between Judas (Murray Head) and Jesus (Ian Gillan).
~ Another great song by Yvonne Elliman from the same time period is "Love Me"!
Yvonne was Eric Clapton's backup singer for awhile before she went solo.
Always loved her voice❤
Ultimate 70's disco hit. And it's GREAT!
Awesome song! Brings back fun memories of ninth grade. Once again, I do not want to sound too technical, but Yvonne Elliman had a No. 28 pop hit in the early 1970s with "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from the soundtrack to "Jesus Christ Superstar." She also had a No. 14 pop hit with "Love Me" from 1976 and a No. 15 hit with "Hello Stranger" from 1977 and a No. 34 hit with "Love Pains" from 1979. So she's really not a one-hit wonder. 🙂 On your own, check out the music video to "I Don't Know How to Love Him" (actually the scene from the movie musical), in which she plays Mary Magdalene, on RUclips. Very beautiful and moving!!!
Her other song written by The BeeGees is the great "Love Me" which was also a hit by her. Give that a listen.
Perfect song! Lyrics, voice, and music.
I saw the movie only once. It was enough for me, because I was not a disco fan. However, I love this song. My favorite from the soundtrack. I also liked "Disco Inferno" as well. Keep up the good work, Gentlemen!
Just dancing away here thinking about Saturday night fever such an iconic movie . I was in love with John Travolta back in the day 😂😂 Peace out ✌️ ☮️
Her cover of "Hello Stranger" was a big hit. At least in Indiana.
Yvonne was a gift.
If you are interested in disco and a variety of instruments Please Please Please check out KC and The Sunshine Band... Get Down Tonight is a good one to start.
Up
Yes, Yvonne as Mary Magdalene and Barry Dennon as Pontius Pilate are the only two singers/actors to appear in all three incarnations of "Jesus Christ Superstar": the original concept album, the Broadway stage play and finally the hit 1973 film. Watch Yvonne's scenes from that film here on RUclips, especially "Everything's Alright" and the famous ballad she sings to a sleeping Jesus "I Don't Know How To Love Him", later covered by numerous female recording artists such as Helen Reddy ("I Am Woman").
Love love it.
Love this one! ❤
as much as USA wanted disco to die , disco gave USA the middle finger and carried on....the hits just moved to other countries..... and live on today and still sound fresh
She actually used to be a back up singer for Eric Clapton.. Look up the Song "Badge" by Clapton live version from 1977 and watch the video.. Great job guys!! Love the channel
Saturday Night Fever is the quintessential disco album ... 16x platinum for a double LP! Speaking of one-hit wonder, listen to The Trammps' "Disco Inferno" from this album
Steele Breeze . 1982 one hit wonder. Great video goes good along with. The song; you don’t want me anymore.
They originally spoof the dance scene in the 1980 movie Airplane. Then, they spoof the Airplane spoof scene in the 2012 movie Ted.
The Betsy Disco has lots of orchestra type instrumentation bc that was only way to get that lush, big sound, was via real live players. Creates a deep bed of sound, when done right.
In the movie, this song was used on the scene when Tony aka John Travolta goes to a room n asked a lady to strip dance for him n they played this song.
This is where Vinnie is dancing with the girl he likes at the dance studio. I remember when mainstream music stations were smashing disco records on air.
'I Cant Get You Out Of My Mind' is still a great song of hers.
bee gees forever
Pop Muzik by M is a great OHW!
I think the movie you're thinking about where the woman is dancing really fast
is Flash dance.

I prefer it by Ryan's name: "Dancing Woman." 😂
When this was popular, I was 12 and into Rush, Zeppelin, Floyd, etc and it would have been blasphemy to admit I liked it, but damn it's catchy! 😂
LOVE!!!!!!!
I remember this song!
I loved this at the time it came out, and I still do! ❤ I remember her as Mary Magdalene in the film version of Jesus Christ Superstar. She was phenomenal.
Give disco a chance. It’s got a lot of great songs. Try Thelma Houston’s “don’t leave me this way”. (This old rocker’s personal favorite)
My dad liked this song and I do too
😂This could play at a club tonight 🔥🔥🔥🔥and not one Gen Z would know this isn't a new song......well they don't know disco so not fair. Ryan save yourself the time.......the movie did not age well but the video You Should Be Dancing by the Bee Gees has that scene in it and it is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
FRENCH HORN❤
Far from a one-hit wonder.
She also had hits with "Hello Stranger" (It was a cover of Barbara Lewsi' original but is the most successful version after Lewis' recording.) It hit #1 in the US Adult Contemporary Charts.
She recorded "Love Me" (written by the Robin & Barry Gibb). It was a hit at #14 in the US and charted higher in some ofther countries.
She first hit the Billboard Top 100 with her recording of "I Don't Know How To Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar in 1971. HIt #15 in the US Adult Contemporary Charts.
She sang backup on 5 Eric Clapton LPs including the single "I Shot The Sheriff".
Thanks for the post, "Filthy." As you were the one that made me aware of Elliman's other hit songs, it's necessary for a response.
First and foremost, the guys made it clear in the description for the marathon and reiterated it in a recent video with Ty that they are going under the definition that if a song is most successful/memorable, then it can be considered a "one hit wonder" in their view. Whether or not you and I agree with that definition, it is the framework that the guys are using. As I've pointed out in other posts about the song, it was Elliman's only #1 song on the Mainstream American charts and her last significant hit. It's also likely the song most average music listeners know her from as well. Thus, those points all seem to fit the above criteria that the guys defined from the outset.
Second, it is difficult to argue that songs were hits on other forms of charts (like Adult Contemporary) because many artists have hits in those alternative formats that were not big hits on the main chart. That would nullify a large amount of artists considered as having "one hit wonders" in the first place. The guys have seemed to be quite clear that they were going by the main charts, not auxiliary charts like AC, rock, R&B, or dance.
The argument that Elliman sang backup on albums for another artist (who might have had a hit song) simply doesn't have a bearing on whether or not she qualifies as a "one hit wonder" as a solo artist. There are many former backup singers (such as Sheryl Crow and Mariah Carey) that went to great success as solo artists, but their time as backup singers did not factor into whether or not they had more than one major hit song as a solo artist.
Finally, whether we as the viewers agree with each other or the guys, it is the guys' decision to define the format of the marathon as they see fit as it is their channel. They have graciously allowed us to recommend songs for the marathon. This song had a lot of support from viewers to be included, whether it's classically defined as a "one hit wonder" or not. I hope all will be respectful not only of the viewers' suggestions, but the guys' choices as it is ultimately their decision on what makes it as it is their channel to make those decisions.
Thanks again for the post and your comments throughout the marathon. While we may disagree on this topic, your posts are typically very infotmative, insightful and add to the great discourse here on the message board. Thanks again for your participation, even if we disagree about this particular topic.
@@user-lq4qe7pj9s There is no dismissing of her chart success with those songs.
Like Bilboard Top 100, Adult Contemporary (AKA U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary), and U.S. Cash Box Top 100 are "Mainstream American charts".
Evidently, the term "one-hit wonder" has become as elastic and malleable as the Commerce Clause.
T^he reference to her background vocla work wasn't so much an argument as the fact that she is well known to most everyone that bought records in the 70's & 80's.
Thanks for the reply.
@@Coowallsky Thanks for the reply, "Filthy." I want to separate that I understand and acknowledge your argument about Elliman's other hit songs besides "If I Can't Have You." Recently, I posted a list of the times when female solo artists had #1 "one hit wonders" and I did not include Elliman for that reason. However, my response to your original post was about how the hosts on the channel have defined a "one hit wonder" for the purpose of the marathon. I apologize if that did not come across more clearly in my original reply.
Unfortunately, we don't have common ground on the topic of how to determine a "one hit wonder" through chart usage. For example, Deee-Lite's "Groove Is In The Heart" was seemingly that group's only mainstream hit. Yet, the group had SIX #1 songs on the dance charts but none of those other songs may have made it to the mainstream chart. Should Deee-Lite no longer be considered a "one hit wonder" due to having so much success on a genre specific chart? I'd argue "no" because those other #1 dance hits weren't apparently as successful as "crossover" songs like "Groove Is In The Heart."
I know how big a fan of Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs. Jones" you are as a one hit wonder with your advocacy and success for that song getting into the marathon. Yet, Paul scored a top 10 soul charting song entitled "Am I Black Enough For You?" as his direct follow up to "Mrs. Jones." Furthermore, Paul's next album had a top 40 mainstream and top 10 soul hit with the song "Thanks For Saving My Life." Do those songs disqualify "Me and Mrs. Jones" as a "one hit wonder"? I would argue "no" but your position might actually eliminate it as such.
My guess would be that most average music fans, especially those that lived in the 1970s, might know Elliman from her role in "Jesus Christ Superstar" far more so than her work as a backup singer. However, that is just anecdotal and not evidentiary on my part. What is truly fascinating is that while Elliman's version of "I Don't Know How To Love Him" was on the mainstream chart, another version of the same song by Helen Reddy was also on the mainstream chart at the SAME time. Furthermore, Reddy's version actually peaked HIGHER (#13) on the mainstream chart than Elliman's version (#28). This is particularly stunning when considering that it was Elliman that first recorded the song on the album for the musical, performed it live on stage, and in the film adaptation as well. Thus, it may not be out of bounds to argue that Elliman wasn't more well known than another singer that only recorded a version of a song that Elliman had sung for years.
As a historian, I'm truly grateful for your "Commerce Clause" reference. There's no doubt that this issue of what constitutes a "one hit wonder" is the music equivalent of the "Constructionist Clause" in the American Constitution. 😀
Thanks again for the reply and the interesting discourse. It's been a pleasure communicating about this topic with you.
She actually reached the Top Ten with “Love Me” on the Cashbox chart. I know that people don’t often think of Cashbox charts but in the 50s-70s they were published in some newspapers (instead of Billboard) or featured in some record stores when they used to display the top 45s. Cashbox probably started to decline in the 70s once Casey Kasem started his countdown and used Billboard rankings. But I can remember buying both publications as a kid to see how their charts compared.
@@jayo.7086 Thanks for the reply, Jayo. I believe "Filthy" also mentioned the Cash Box charts in a previous response. The purpose of my original response was to make the argument that viewers can choose to define "one hit wonders" as they see fit, but the guys have explained their criteria for the marathon more than once. As viewers, we can agree or disagree with that definition but we should respect that it's ultimately the hosts choices as to what gets on the channel.
As for Cash Box, it appears those charts were in existence from the early 1940s to mid-1990s. Given the wide time frame that the channel covers, it might make most sense for consistency's sake to use what seems to be the industry standard chart (Billboard) as that has likely been in existence for the entire run of music that might be in the marathon (it looks like Billboard has been around in one form or another since the early 1910s to today).
In my limited time as a viewer and commentor, it sure seems like "one hit wonder" is in the running for most contentious music term on the channel with "disco" and "Yacht rock." My thought is: Whatever people want to call it, let's just enjoy the music, the fun and insight that the guys bring, and our interactions with each other. 😀 Thanks again for the reply.
Love the french horn in this!
You have to move for the whole album 😁🌟
Yvonne Elliman also took the Bee Gees penned "Love Me" to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1976. Anyone interested in more of her should check this one out. People of a certain age might remember it. Radio has all but forgotten this one thereby leaving Yvonne with the One-Hit moniker.
ruclips.net/video/rOHT50xcOBQ/видео.html
Yvonne's voice is more front and center in "Love Me." It's kinda buried in "If I Can't Have You." Love them both, though.
I'm pretty sure they played this song during the topless dancer dancing on the bar
