NATIVE AMERICAN brings me home on CROW INDIAN RESERVATION in Montana: Life on the "Rez"

- Crow Indian Reservation, just south of Billings, Montana, is where I spent six days exploring the beautiful land and making friends, with my mother Carla.
What is this video about? I want people to see Native Americans, appreciate the music, and see how life is like on "the rez". I was in Billings, the closest city, and I asked about the Crow Indian Reservation nearby. People told me there was nothing to see there. Don't go there. So, we decided to check it out for ourselves. Anyone can drive in.
My day starts with buying some fruit in Hardin, the closest town off the Crow Indian Reservation.
I was lucky enough to make friends with Lewis, a Crow Native American singer when my mother and I went to eat lunch at the local senior center.
In a previous video, Lewis gave me a Native American singing lesson. This time, we went to his house, and he kept singing for us. He still stays in my heart, even though I'm not there.
He took me his house today. He doesn't drive. There is a Crow Tribe public transportation, but not to the towns off the reservation. He likes to go to the movies in Sheridan, Wyoming on discount days. And even to Billings to listen to Jazz music on Sunday evenings. So, he will try his luck at hitchhiking, which usually works around here. It seems everyone knows everyone here. I was impressed how well he gets around, but with his infectious charm, you can see why.
I hope I can make it back here for Crow Fair in 2020, where the Crow Native American cultural traditions come alive, with traditional food, campsites, teepees and a big powwow.
We really loved making friends on the Crow Reservation, and I'm thankful for allowing me into your lives. ❤

I love this mans stories and songs. I would sit on his porch all day to listen to him. Bless him.
I agree.
Watch from beginning to end to really enjoy. I found such joy in the singing and clapping on the porch. Excellent human interest travel video. I love this.
I agree. Being around Lewis just makes anyone feel good.
His voice and his singing are soothing to the soul! Could sit all day and just listen to him. You are so blessed to have gotten to spend this time with him.
Awesome little tape and takes on Crow people. They are truly a wonderful beautiful people. The manager at the end of the film. I remember coming a few weeks ago. Nice guy. I was up at Crow agency and Hardin just a few weeks ago. To visit and see family but also to a family funeral. May God be with them still and always.
What kind generous people you ALL are. This made my heart warm 🥰 Thanks for the tour and greetings from Australia.
Love how Lewis tells stories with humor
Good spirited people Crow. Kind and generous full of life. If anyone knows this gentleman please ask him if he happens to know Mary daughter of Thomas Yellowtail. would like to touch base with her and her family again. Charlie from Brooklyn. Gave her grandson sneaker skates. Might remember that.Met them at Art show at St. Regis maybe in fall1995.
That is a real man, very cool and down to earth with a huge heart to a stranger! 🏹
The Apsaalooke' are very proud and traditional people. They keep songs alive in families for generations.
Bless u grandpa, from Navajo Nation.
❤️❤️❤️
Lewis is so much like most of the elders I’ve visited on all of Res’s in my life. Sign, Lakota Snow Bear
It's so sad that he talks about his Dad so much. Must of been such a big influence.
I agree. I know he misses his dad every minute of his day.
I do that too...my dad was the greatest.
I really enjoyed the video. I would like to see so many more on RUclips. this Elder is a very nice easy going man.
I love this guy he’s all natural and carefree
Agreed. He makes everyone feel good around him!
I smiled when i saw the cars in the yard ..just like back home on my rez
We ride our horses till they cant go no more like the old days
Whenever your paths cross again tell him a 72 yr old native brother said hello
I was hoping to be there this summer, but then corona happened. I hope I can go back to visit him. 👍👌
I’m native from Arizona in Sacaton area but for now living in Sacramento cal.

Lewis is such a kind and interesting man, a real character too! It was great you guys became friends and you and Mom went to his house. Such a heartwarming video my friend, very real. ❤️
Lewis is one of a kind -- a real gem. I felt lucky to be around him. Thank you.
Jason Rupp he reminded me a lot of my mom’s stepdad who was half Sioux Indian. Same type of guy and everything. Used to tell my brother and I lots of stories. He passed away in 2005. Love to all Native Americans!
What a gem. In a way I felt good documenting some of his memories. Love to Native Americans!!
@@JasonRuppVlogYes!!
Yup, same as the reserves in Ontario , Manitoba and Sask. Derelict vehicles everywhere, junk all over the place. Broken windows abound. Houses must be built to spec there.
This is one of my favorite videos!
We better call bim and say hi.
We had such a good time with him.
I love these trip videos about the life at reservation, encourage me to travel there too 💕
❤
❤️❤️❤️
Jason,
tq very much for your videos on the Crow people and other native Americans. I’ve been at home for a while, here in a suburb outside of Chicago and through your videos on youtube I’m able to get out and see Montana and life on a reservation.
What you’re doing reminds me of “Dateline America “ w/Charles Kurralt. And “ A Walk Across America “ by Peter Jenkins
I’m going to be watching these over and over.
Yes, you don’t say good bye, but ✋🏽” until we meet again “
On the West Side of Chicago a friend said, “ bye, but don’t let it be the last “.
Tell your friend with the dog eating horse poop : it could be a sign of stomach problems; I had a dog that had stomach cancer later on
Until next time 👋
Thank you for the kind words. I reallh enjoyed learning about life on the reservation.
Good video.
Thank you ja
Awesome
🤙🤙🤙
Thanks pal
Well done Jason
Thnx. I loved this day.
You're the man!!!!!!!!
Yay! Yes I am!
These vids are everything to me
Keep the beard my brother 💪🏽
Have to say Lewis is a real character and his songs are so lovely it a shame the young people people don't carry the tradition of the elders be lost forever which be a shame to mankind. Also the music u played in the car of the ingenious people singing I can picture them all dancing to it such a poetic beat to it grt video again matey
Lewis is one of a kind. He has a special place in my heart. And everytime he sings, I feel such happiness. He is such a gem.
He definitely is a gem. We enjoyed him. I loved all the animals, too.
I wouldn’t say the younger generations don’t, when have you gone out of your way to see for yourself?
difficult to say.... all these tribes fight and its important that they do. look at Ireland. there are things that should be put in high regard as far as humans...
Hi Jason. Your everywhere
Even on the reservation
love the interest in my people🥰😍😍
I love the kind people of Crow Nation. They welcomed me so kind.
We love your people! Would love to meet them in person!
We use to raise blue heelers good cow dogs👍🏼
Lewis what a character so interesting ..
Quite a character. He is a wealth of knowledge and happiness.
@@JasonRuppVlog I so glad we met him!
Its not a Native Yard unless there is at least one non working vehicle! Lol. Were all one, No matter the color or beliefs thanks for doing this video! People tend to ignore Natives unless they are dying. This is probably the way that 90 percent of Indegenous people live in American society! If you ever get a shot head to a powwow and talk to the people we love to talk and get to know people who arent like us.
Love when non natives take an interest and form connections and friendships! We need more of this kind of connection and love in this world!
Thank you Jason and Carla for introducing us to Crow life. Proud people.
Thanks back!!
Yo Jason🤙🤙 from crow my self. After all this COVID is under control you’ll need to come back at the beginning of August for Crow Fair.🦅🇺🇸
I really hope to come next year. 👍👍👍 Thank you.
I hope 🙏

Seems to have some things going for that community there
Hello Jason my name is toushane Big, an I'm also a first nation native (navajo/Dine') brother of our great tribal natives from Arizona...
Hi Toushane. Nice to meet you.
@@JasonRuppVlog I just watched the post or vlog you have on your channel with you an lewis on the crow Rez, I've been slowly watching you on your righteous journey of our other native brothers an sisters to the north an I really liked the way you have respect an a big heart for all first nation tribes... Thank you for telling the world how it is an showing them it's not all fun an games on the reservation, how us tribes have had to an still have to struggle to get the littlest good things in life...
Right. That is my goal. I really would like to come and show life on more reservations. The world needs to see the good and the bad.
@@JasonRuppVlog you are a blessing in disguise an us first nation people need to be heard an America/ white America owes it to us to give us a chance to regain our pride, regain our strength and most of all regain our native land an population back... If the white house/ white man won't listen to our needs, maybe they will see it's true an will listen to another Anglo male who has made the trip an seen it with his or her own eyes. Maybe then they will believe it's true so you are The voice or the person to show how it is...
I was at that IGA today..
Really? How is it down there now?
@@JasonRuppVlog stocked!..produce looked great. Nice grocery store!
@@joshbradley6841 Awesome I really want to go back again. You think nowadays it's okay yet?
Jason Rupp you coming back for native days to crow fair this year or another???
Maybe! I really hope i can make it. That would be such an honor to be there.
It would be an awesome experience for you and yours. I’m sure you’d enjoy it. And Thanks for coming in the first place. And showing your followers how it is here👌🏼
@@calvinn96 are you doing any dances or music at the fest? Thank you kindly.
Jason Rupp sadly no I am not hopeful next year.
A fine moment. i couldnt think of something funny to happen in there. It was ment to be like that.
Yep. Just a feel good video with Lewis of Crow Indian Reservation. He has a special place in my heart. 👍
What's really in the Peace Pipe??? 🤣
I wonder.🙄🙄
@@JasonRuppVlog come on now you know lol
No comment. 😄😀

🤣🤣🤣. That’s awesome! What an awesome video man, this is the kind of thing that helps restore my hope for humanity. Loved the full minute of that dog eating horse shit too 😂. Seriously though, great video Jason!
Pheonix Arizona land of the Pima Indians so is Lewis a Pima
Not sure.. but I think he is Crow. Maybe one parent is from Arizona perhaps.
Hahaha
Old warior

I like that!
@@JasonRuppVlog 😀
Interesting he grew back his beard so fast look at that
Yeah, I imagine that is kind of surprising to most people.
those poor horses, they are so skinny.
Poor dogs!!
Dogs having toilet stew. Pandemic dog food? The horse giving the dogs the stink eye.
One thing seems clear. Human evolution continues, and at some point we will lose track of our past. The human settled across the world entering a land untouched. Most of the natives died of sickness from the incoming tribe. It was just a matter of time until the humans mix, until no original natives will exist. The time is coming.
