What a time to be a kid and Yankee fan!! Living in Detroit I took a lot of grief for being a Yankee fan. Never flinched!! A great time! Thanks to all of those guys in pinstripes. Especially my favorite...Thurman Munson.
I had this on youtube years ago. But got taken down. The New York Yankees. One does not go without the other. '78 was a fun year to watch. That one game playoff was great! So many characters on this team. The Bronx Zoo so many story lines. My all-time favorite Yankee team 1978. I loved these guys. I was 8 also in '78. Plus i live not too far from the city.GO YANKEES!
If anyone is wondering why Liza Minnelli‘s recording of the theme to New York New York is used in this program instead of Frank Sinatra‘s, there’s a simple reason. Sinatra’s recording was not made until 1980!
My favorite Yankees team. I was 8 in 1978 and was fortunate enough to attend a few games that year including the inafmous back-to-back inside the park home runs by the Texas Rangers. Hasn't been duplicated since.
Bless you for posting this. I missed it in 1979 when it aired. Precious memories of a great season, and my favorite baseball team of all time. Thanks again..
I wish they could have shown Reggie's 460 ft revenge dinger off Bob Welch in game six - it just was the icing on the cake of my favourite Yankee season ever.
It was amazing. That 14 game comeback coincided with the newspaper strike around the same time. Seems the Yankees focused after that though they were a 2nd half team in that era. That was a well balanced club that could beat you in many different ways. Guidry was 25-3, their defense was always great, Goose in the bullpen and had bench guys, veterans like Piniella, White and Spencer that chipped in. Boston was playing .700 ball and was a great team though their pitching was a bit suspect. Rice was having a monster year but they ran out of gas and were not going to keep that pace. Zimmer never rested his regulars.
From late July till the end of the season, he went 9-2, and gave the Yanks a solid number 3 starter after Guidry and Figueroa. Had Hunter not had that procedure done, the Yanks wouldn't have caught Boston. It was just one of a long list of unexpected events that went the Yanks way during the second half of 78. The Yanks have never had a season like that one, and never will. It really was a tale of two seasons in one.
Why would MLB block this? The greatest season highlight story ever done, especially considering it was done back in the seventies. Why wouldn't MLB just put this on sale? Would sell very well
Steve Schulman If you use Beatles music without permission, you disappear. There was a window of time where Apple was reorganizing and people tried to get away with it, 1978 was prime time for that.
The hopes may have been high for 1979, but it would be of the most tragic years ever in Yankee history, losing Thurman in August and not really being in the AL East race at all down the stretch.
Hunter's contribution to the Yanks in 78 were immense. Let me explain: in jult, after about 2 years of having a sore arm and diminished velocity, Yankee doctor Maurice Cowen performed what is called "arm manipulation" on Hunter's upper arm. Under anesthesia, Cowen bent Hunter's arm back further than he would ever have been able to otherwise, and in doing so he broke the adhesions that had kept Hunter from throwing naturally. Afterwards, Cat pitched like he did when he had from 71-75.
Not Good, THE GREAT OL DAY"S !!!! Simple Commercial Say"s It All,...The City Never Sleep"s, CITIBANK !!!! & 77 & 78, It Was Alway"s MILLER TIME !!!! Stay Strong....Peace
Things fell apart for the Yankees the following year, didn't make the playoffs was the most irrelevant thing, the most relevant was the tragedy of Thurmond Munson and the plane crash.
If you ask me, what do i miss most about the world series.... The rushing of the fandemonium on the field after a win.... Political correctness killed baseball, as it has other sports!
RIP Thurman Munson, Catfish Hunter, Billy Martin, and Bobby Murcer

Reggie Jackson and Jim Hunter were the heroes of that 6 game World Series 1978

@@LindenWalker I thought the music was the theme from the Hitchcock thriller North by Northwest.

The Liza Minnelli version was often played after a yankees loss and the Frank Sinatra was always played following a win.
They already weren't having a championship year in '79 before the Munson tragedy.

79 was the year of the Birds.
