In the back of your mind, hold on to the fact that Bishop Barron is a scholar and was chosen to run a seminary. The seminary of Chicago, no less. Benefits of doubts are appropriate for when there's a genuine doubt after really mature deliberation. There's really no reason to have that kind of a doubt where Robert Barron is concerned. His cards have been on the table for some time. Could something have changed in him as a result if this interview? Maybe, but we should wait to see more before entertaining that possibility. We ought to be testing the spirits here in his regard.
I attended Old St. Patrick’s Catholic school in the 40s with the traditional mass. I am in a NO parish for the last 33 years and still can’t get used to it. I try to get into NYC monthly for the high TLM and feel like I’m home. There is no comparison between the two. Young couples with babies, everyone dressed, the real candles, the smells, the bells, the singing of the mass and the reverence is unbelievable. Confessions before every mass acknowledging the reality of the Holy Eucharist. JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Agree with you. I attended THE Mass in the 30s on. Began to be an altar server at 8 years old as my older brothers twisted the arm of the good priests to let me do such. We had great and holy nuns teaching us the true deposit of Faith, no? We pray such times return.
I used to travel into Manhattan on business and attend Holy Innocents - I believe on 38th ?
At a particular Solemn High Mass one evening, I was sitting in the upper right hand corner. I positioned myself for a few moments so I could see the congregation and the actions of the priest all at once. It was just as you described. It could have been the year 1200, 1500, 1950, - pick your century - I felt like I was given a panoramic view of salvation history.
@@markredman9173 Exactly the church I referenced. It’s on 37th St. between 7th Ave. and Bway. Surprisingly, that’s in Cdl. Dolan’s diocese and the mass still goes on. I spoke with some of the parishioners and asked if Dolan would put an end to it but none of them seemed too concerned. I live in Staten Island but try to get there at least once a month. I worked around the corner on 38 street and attended mass every morning. At one time they said 11 masses a day, Chaplet of Mercy at 5PM and seminars at noon in the basement. That church is about the only thing I miss about NYC.
@@jimjimmy8391 We sure did. Just think of what today’s kids are missing out on. We were taught respect, reading, writing, grammar, punctuations, math, penmanship and knew if we were MALE or FEMALE. OIY! Poor kids!!!!
@@markredman9173 yes, good memories. A slap in the face if I did not say sir or mam. The good nun twisting my ear and whacking my knuckles with a ruler if I fooled around. The line up by classes for confession on First Fridays. Being taught the meaning of the Mass and confession by the nuns. Could go on and on. Off the straight and narrow at times but the teachings of the nuns pulling me back. It has been a good life. Sad for the kids today.
I remember Laboeuf's unsufferable antics, so it's almost a shock to see he's become a (quite traditional?) Catholic. His words about the Latin Mass were profound.
The best Catholics start out enemies of the Church. I hope Shia lives a good Christian life.
I had seen Shia in interviews think it was earlier this year or last year when he was getting hard time from media and was hoping and believe may have said a prayer that he would have conversion to Christ. Could see his conversion leading to others interest in Catholic Faith. His promotion of TLM looks awesome. Only seen few clips and it does look like genuine conversion. Conversion is from the Heart. He seems sincere. But can say from experience our lamp needs topped up every day as scripture says to keep the burning zeal or Faith in God Alive and burning brightly. 🔥 Pray for him and Bishop.

We Catholics don't call ourselves "saved" like Protestants do. We hope he will be saved, but we don't know for certain.

As for Bishop Barron, I love his rosary videos, especially on Joyful Mysteries. However, I was appalled when I saw only one of his shows (first time watching so far). He was repeatedly pressed by young man interviewer about sexual sin. BB kept avoiding and undermining, saying the Deadly Sin of Lust being the LEAST significant bc it is a sin of the body, as such not so significant spiritually, as in Pride. And he proceeded with lots of extremely nebulous word salad talk about the essence of God, etc. BB IS a smart guy, and while I leave judgment to Jesus, I could find no justification for what he clearly knew he was doing - deceiving (trying to deceive) in a very crafty way. So, I don't KNOW that he is a good guy. I defer to Jesus on that one.

I felt that Bishop Barron's 'How come' was simply asking Shia to elaborate on his experience, not because he was surprised that he preferred the Latin Mass; he was simply delving deeper into what had resonated with Shia. That Shia was so deeply moved by the Latin Mass is beautiful, but the experience of one person is not necessarily the same for another. I attend both rites and know many people who prefer one or the other or, like me, are happy to attend both. I think Bishop Barron's opinion of 'everyone being able to find expression' is one of experience and wisdom.

Exactly! As a 52 year old cradle Catholic I arrived at my first TLM, and within 10 minutes I thought, “This IS Catholism!”
After my 14 year old daughter experienced her first TLM at the Holy Name of Jesus Academy with Dominican mothers and their students she said, “ Did I just go to Heaven?” She is now a student and growing in knowledge and faith.

I'm sure Bishop Barron is smart enough to understand traditional Catholics and is smart enough to know where he belongs in the Church. He's saying why can't there be a way for us to come together and you are saying "It's an Us vs Them thing". I think he knows what he is doing. Also, he is just being a good host. He is asking Shia to elaborate on it rather than ending it there.
And sadly, I have seen how the TLM has been utilized to perpetuate an “Us vs Them” mentality within the Church. I can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve been called a heretic for attending the Novus Ordo Mass rather than the Extraordinary Form, and it doesn’t make me want to go to the Extraordinary Mass more, but instead pushes me away. I do love the TLM but I’m very disturbed by how something that is supposed to draw people closer to Christ is being weaponized and used to divide people rather than unite us as the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church.

I think we can go back and fourth in measured ways. The western rite Orthodox mass of Saint Tikhon is a brilliant balance.
Shia talked about his "feelings".
Catholics know better than to use feelings to grasp any matter faith.
It's not that Bishop Barron didn't get it. It's he that doesn't get it.

Bless you, J. Kennedy. I was fortunate enough to attend the TLM during my early childhood. Thirty yrs. later, a friend asked my husband and I to meet him for a first Saturday Mass at a Discalced Carmelite Monastery. When the dear sisters started singing the Gregorian chant, tears streamed down my face. My first utterance was, “I’m home.” At that very moment I realized everything I had been missing for my faith and proper love of God.
Let's pray Shia runs the course with all of us.

My husband and I were talking about it, he could be like another Augustine, God is going to raise up great saints, pray for this young man! You feel sorry that he was interviewed by a bishop of the Catholic Church? A skillful interviewer that encouraged him to share his experience? How did Shia evangelize a person who's already in the fold? Unless you mean that he may have gained some insight from his conversation with Shia. That is the correct way to put it.

As a former Protestant pastor, church planter, apologist, and video producer, I'm pretty certain my journey into the Catholic faith would have been still born if all I ever experienced was the Novus Ordo mass. Reading St.Ephrem the Syrian and then discovering the Divine Liturgy in an Eastern Byzantine Church...the penny dropped.

We’ll, the Holy Spirit is faithful and God knows what each of us need. One day I will go to a Latin mass but by his grace I will never be divisive. God has worked slowly with me because he knows my bent and my heart. Though I trusted in the teachings of the Church, the reality of the Eucharist slowly and deeply is being rooted in my heart. God is in it all and uses it all; we just need to remain open and obedient. What he hates is division. No offense but some of the radical traditionalist seem angry and proud to me with the way they present the Latin Mass. God exalts the humble because they don’t know they are so because they are too busy loving Jesus and others.
As an exProtestant what got me into Catholicism was High Mass/Latin Mass/Sung Mass.
I started strong, going daily til I moved states. I would cry every time I'd go.
Protestant is the truth - Catholicism is the Road to The Holy Roman Empire - I'm a former Catholic and the true history of this Holy Roman Empire Church is not of God..

As a Conservative , traditional Lutheran, let me just say, I feel and understand everything Shia LaBoeuf is saying. He finds the traditional mass to be a visceral connection, that reaches deep into him and pulls him close. This is a great interview. I am pleased to see this talented young man coming to know Christ and letting the Holy Spirit teach him.
You have just described my experience perfectly. Thanks for helping put words to my experience in going to the traditional mass. The first time I ever experienced it, I was awestruck. I couldn’t stop crying. I was also angry when I realized that they tried to hide this from us. Praise God that they failed!

I am 59 years old. I remember the Latin mass. The New mass did not come until around 1972.
I remember the transition mass and then the New mass.
I remember My Dad, who attended regularly, all of a sudden attend not very often.
He often talked about missing the Latin mass. He said we no longer can step into Heaven, here on earth.
I could not fully understand.
Years later as an adult, I attended a Latin mass.
At some point during high mass, I felt something, as if the outside world was shut out. That of feeling in a hallowed place.
On the way home, It came to me what my father was missing.
I can count the few times in my life I actually cried, but I could not stop the tears. I now understood what they took from my Dad, or from us.
Most people do Not even know.
As reverent as I try to be as I attend our Novus ordo mass, I am often distracted by the speed in which they keep changing the words and watering down even the New mass.
I can see the pause and the negative feeling coming off the Priest as I genuflect and receive on the tongue.

I felt the same about Shia's experience. He nailed it! I was so pleased that he said these things with Bishop Barron.
The Catholic Church has the best mass/sacred ceremony: whether it’s immediately after the Consecration of the bread and wine; whether it’s during adoration when the monstrance or the tabernacle holds the Blessed Sacrament and the sanctuary candle is lit, the sacred message is given: God is with you, right here, right now. The Latin mass captures it perfectly.
I didn't see any problem with Bishop Barron asking why. Everyone has their own experiences, it's a fantastic question to ask and get curious about Shia's experience

As an Orthodox convert, who grew up with, found no weight in, and was eventually repelled by the modern Catholic mass, I was pretty blown away by Laboeuf's interview. Enjoyed your comments, as well.
Yes, I listened to the interview and I get what you are saying. Barron was focusing on technique while Shia was talking about acting from the heart.❣️
Barron then did not want to acknowledge the TLM is a trip to Calvary, the foot of the cross. Envisioning Our Lord's sacrifice for us, it brings us to our knees in true repentance and to the sacred journey done for centuries for us, for humanity. Its not Barron's "something for everybody", it is The Mass ... Missa... The New Covenant that completes all biblical covenants.
Shia said it was like finding his band.

My priests and our seminarians always emphasize that the Mass is a sacrifice. That's something that Shia could connect to.
@@JohnFromAccounting Yet they replaced the sacrificial altar with a table, they faced the priest toward the people rather than facing God on the altar and they also changed the liturgy to such an extent that it would be barely recognisable to any Catholic before the ‘new order’
They also removed any mention of Saint Michael the archangel who is invoked 7 times in the traditional mass. They also started giving communion on the hand standing, removed the altar rails and brought in multiple Eucharistic ministers and altar girls. I could go on and on.
@@TheAmosTree Agree. In a effort to be modern and reach out to the ever divisive protestant faiths, the Catholic Church lost it's way. Afraid that it could not hold up to 20th century "science" and the rapidly changing global world order, the Church abdicated and chose compromise. Become more like protestantism, be approachable, don't be dogmatic. So the wrecking balls came out...jackhammering the altars and communion rails. 20th century iconoclasm happened in so many Churches. And the wrecking ball also happened to the Mass.
An experiment gone bad. 60+ years later, empty N.O. Churches.

Regarding the Novus Ordo, something which I have realised.
All the other rites are ancient and all have certain characteristics that remain the exact same regardless east or west etc. The Novus Ordo mass was something very different, brand new and created by a free mason Bugnini and 6 Protestants. They had the sole intention of creating a mass that’s less Catholic, more palatable for the modern world and for Jews and Protestants in particular. The emphasis of the sacrifice was replaced with a “communal meal”. The sacrificial altar was replaced with a table. The priest no longer faced God on the altar as ALL other rites do but rather he faces the people. Man took centre stage not God. Multiple customs were done away with. The altar was replaced with a table. What’s interesting is that this happened before, in the book of Maccabees. Let me explain.
The term ‘abomination of desolation’ which means an ‘abomination that leads to emptiness’ is used only 3 times in the bible. Once in the book of Daniel speaking of the end times, once by Christ in the book of Matthew again speaking about what to look out for to know those times are at hand and finally once in the book of Maccabees. Maccabees is the only time in scripture that explains exactly what the abomination of desolation actually is.
The Jewish leaders changed the daily sacrifice. They did away with the customs and replaced the altar with a table etc and they did this with the intent of becoming more palatable to the world and the other pagan religions in Jerusalem. In scripture this was called the ‘abomination of desolation’. Only a small remnant of Jews realised it for what it was and they went underground and continued the traditional daily Jewish sacrificial customs hidden away from the leaders. This false church lasted 100 years or so before God destroyed them and restored the traditional Jewish religion and altars etc
What’s also fascinating is that in scripture when the apostles asked Jesus to let them know what will happen just before he returns in his second coming at the end of the age he responded “when you see the abomination that leads to desolation’ as spoken of in the book of Daniel know them times are at hand.
We’ll this is exactly what the Novus Ordo is. It is the abomination that has led to emptiness. It is the birth of the end times counterfeit church.

I follow Catholic and non-Catholic podcasters and non-Catholics criticize our traditions. So Bishop Barrion’s interview was great!! I loved the interview and as Catholics United we stand; divided we fall.
I felt the same way when I entered into a Latin Mass I pretty much cried the whole time the experience changes you deep deeply. Especially going through darkness for almost 50 years it's unexplainable too my core
Shia mentioned having a connection, to which I can related. My eyes regularly tear up during Sunday TLM high mass contemplating the holy sacrifice I am witnessing. But only seldom do I cry at the novus ordo. The NO is all words, but no connection.
@@joekraimer5379 I still go to the NO i cry when I look up at Jesus and I tune NO out and pray but I cannot do not connect the way I did that day...I would love to go back. and I'm Joan Up kind of person i have had words with the priests,deacon, etc. at NO church where they were not teaching the truth and it burns my heart for a while till I am called to say something. They are very fidgety with me and maybe that's why I have to be there for now I really don't know but feels a pull to keep confronting lovingly, weird as I'm not a old Catholic i got confirmed April Vigil lot of weird stuff has happened since I have walked into a Catholic church but will NEVER forget when I walked into TLM and I long for it but God will it when time is up for me at NO and I will travel the hour to The Latin Mass! Listening to Fr Ripperger he said (being an exorcist) satan and his demons cannot abide latin. So I was delighted when the altar got turned around and finally I can see what the priest is doing. I can see how he feels as he celebrates the sacrifice of the mass. I was so relieved the mass was now in english so I could understand every word. Born in the 50s. All these years later? What did they do to us and the mass? Tlm IS the one to go to. No doubt.

I am in full agreement with your sentiments about Bishop Barron. I followed him for long time and his series called Catholicism helped me to want to learn more about my faith, which probably helped me do more searching until I found the TLM. He loves beauty, and he would be such a marvelous advocate if he could deepen his faith just a little more. We should pray for him, and Shia as well.

Bishop barron is a feel good gospel preacher.
Deepen his faith? Are you serious? What are you talking about? It has been his deep faith that has been driving people back to the Church for decades now. He is showing the higher intellectual faith, not the dumb down version, he is a philosopher and a theologian, he understand God's word and providence better than you or any of us in this comment section. These comments are narrow minded to say the least.

I was "born" into the Traditional Latin Mass and attended it until I was 26 yrs old when the NO came on the scene...the NO Mass is like going to a theatrical event...the TLM is transcendent, reverent, and sacred...you are there to receive from Jesus Christ and unite yourself to Him in all that occurs in His Holy Sacrifice to the Father for our salvation..anything less than the TLM is not giving God His due worship.

He didn't say he preferred the Latin mass, he told the virtues if each kind of mass.
Further, his characterization of mass appearing to sell something was in specific reference to certain guitar-led masses.
Lastly, a good interviewer will ask the interviewee to elaborate, which doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't know the answer.
Watch a Sunday political program. You know the interviewer knows the answer to most of the questions he's asking.

Bishop Barron is indeed smart, and he knows that this is not the right time for bishops to be publicly criticizing the NO.
Pope Francis has been very clear on where he wants the church to go right now, and it isn’t the TLM.
He let Shia say a lot in the interview, more than I think many bishops would have allowed in a public interview. I’m glad you were charitable towards Bishop Barron, because he doesn’t seem to be an enemy of the TLM. He’s simply a very adaptive and authentic person. If the pope was bringing the TLM back to prominence, I bet Bishop Barron would be on board.
I think on a sliding scale, this bishop is closer to “a man for all seasons” than a rigid non-traditionalist.
What I enjoyed in this interview, besides the start of a tale of redemption, was that two men coming from two very different places both could speak of their mutual love of the Catholic faith. Beautiful!!!

So well said! I just came into the Catholic Church as an evangelical. I’m so grateful. What has been a turn off is listening to some radical traditionalist who are angry and spend much of their time talking about all that is wrong with the Church rather than sharing the gospel. I understand there is a beauty in the Latin mass but this division cannot be healed when there is constant, negative rhetoric. It seems to me that if we take small steps toward tradition, it’s a start. Is so far right or so far left ever good? No because no one really listens to one another. That’s not the unity Jesus prayed for. Thank God the Holy Spirit didn’t allow me to turn away as a result of some of the negativity I heard in the beginning of my journey. He's conducting an interview. He needs to ask "how come." The point of interviewing is to get the interviewee talking. I don't think asking "how come" comes even close to ignorant in that context. It's a good question and I would have asked it too, because he was getting to the heart of something that was central to Shia's conversion. And it was some of the best part of the whole interview, something we wouldn't have had, if he didn't ask that.

Amen…. I feel like I had something beautiful stolen from me in Vatican II. Something I didn’t even know about until COVID. I was born in the late 60s and I remember my mom always saying she love the traditional Latin Mass. now that I found it, I completely understand why.

Hopefully Shia doesn't get dragged the way that Mel did BUT hopefully Mel can be a type of spiritual guide for Shia if this does occur. I hate that society loves to watch other people fail and rejoices at the sin of another.. but it's beautiful in a sense because it really magnifies the grace and forgiveness that can only come from God.

@@peace-and-quiet Well based on their discussion in that interview it sounded like Shia and Barron have a bit of a history together since they first met while Shia was learning more for the Pio movie and was studying with priests in the LA area where Barron was auxiliary bishop.
The blind spots are intentional. Barron is very aware and self conscious of every vowel he chooses. He speaks in generalizations. This is the way of these modernists, as I have come to understand.

I found Bishop Barron b/c of his movie reviews. I thought they were a very interesting take on the films, and decided to watch some more of his content. It's always been both impressive and refreshing. His interviews on the Rubin Report should be mandatory viewing for anyone interested in learning things.
I would never have watched that shia guy talking if it hadn't been for BRB doing the interview, and I'm glad that it worked out like it did. Of course, I can say the same about the TKR vid in response.
I have to agree with TKR and Shia in that the traditional latin mass is far more important to catholicism and christianity than BRB thinks. As an outsider looking in, I was always impressed with the power and majesty of the catholic church even though I was raised baptist. As a kid, I could see the tremendous difference in the two types of churches, obviously, but also the very real depth of history in the catholic church.
Then one day I heard about how the catholics were going to let the nuns stop wearing their habits all the time. As a non-christian and non-catholic child, this really struck me as horribly wrong even if I didn't really understand why at the time. All these many years later, I can point to one example after another where the catholic church has easily divested themselves of their traditions and beliefs in the hopes that it would make them more appealing to the masses. And while we can say this about christianity as a whole, I don't think it really resonates as strongly because other denominations were never heavily steeped in weird raiments, smoking balls swung about on chains, etc.
In all of Christendom, only the catholics stood out as being really "old school" and powerful. Baptists and all the others... well, those were just a bunch of people gathered in a room, wearing nice clothes, and reading yet more passages from the same old book. If it wasn't for the crucifix on the wall, you could easily imagine you were in a business meeting. Catholic churches were something altogether different, especially in the Northeast where I grew up.
Today, I can see time and time again where the catholics betrayed their own in hopes of appealing to outsiders. It's weird, too, because I see a lot of the same parallels in the blacksmithing community I'm part of, everyone always saying we have to coddle newcomers because otherwise blacksmithing will be lost. It's hogwash, but fighting against it is a Herculean task if ever there was!
One of the reasons I quit church altogether is simply because the christians betray their own without hesitation. In big ways and small, there's always betrayal. I grew up with nuns in habits, and even as an outsider I could respect someone who decided that was their life path. I recognized that it took strength of character, fortitude, willpower. And then the nuns listened to the feminists talking about how it was unfair and that priests didn't have to wear their formal garb all the time. I saw the nuns happily side with the outsiders against their own church, the church they agreed to serve and the vestments they knew were part of their agreement. I saw the church capitulate, throwing away decades or centuries of tradition on a whim. And, sadly, I was left wondering how they might throw me away on a whim if ever someone demanded it. I wondered how they would betray me, a commoner with no power or prestige. If they will bow to the outsiders, allowing rot to set in, how can I trust them to have my back should times get tough?
In the interview, Shia talks about how there's no Puberty Ceremony for young boys, a trial that shows they are now entering adulthood and are expected to act like it. He speaks of men being like Mountains for the community. I think too many people missed out on this, but it resonated with me because it reminded me of an old Russian saying, "Men are like the stone wall behind which the garden flourishes."
The Latin Mass, with all its pomp and circumstance, was at least something. Sure, it wasn't a Rite of Passage and didn't mark any one person out as having achieved a goal or crossed a threshold, but it was at least something. Like it or not, people crave roots. They crave ceremony and meaning and hallmarks. It's the same part of our brain that draws us into a story, making us feel part of something bigger than ourselves. When the church stopped the Latin Mass, it betrayed its own in favor of outsiders.
The Rite of Passage Shia speaks of only works when the society honors and upholds the meaning behind that Rite. The Catholic Church turned their backs on that meaning when then did away with the Latin Mass, just like Western Society turned their backs on the Rites of Passage boys had been going through for thousands of years. It's no coincidence that every single primitive culture around the world has independently developed Rites of Passage for their young boys and girls. This is something that speaks to the very core of who we are as humans.
The problem with both the Rite of Passage and the Latin Mass is that it demands the Grown-Ups live up to the expectations set. You cannot ask boys to become that Stone Wall behind which the Garden Flourishes if everyone's constantly complaining about how restrictive the Stone Wall is, how much the Stone Wall keeps out, etc. Even those stone walls, for as sturdy as they appear, need to be maintained and refurbished after weathering the storms the world throws against them.
Shia mentioned that men are to be like the Mountains, and he is right. However, Mountains grow in Ranges, chains of Mountains locked together to form a barrier. There are passes through the mountains, but they are tight and troublesome and closed to many. That's what the men of society used to be. It wasn't that they didn't allow passage through their blockade, but that they made it just difficult enough that only what was good and worthy could manage the journey. The Mountains protected what was beyond them.
Unfortunately, society, like the church, forgot that they were supposed to honor and respect those they asked to stand firm in their defense. Society, like the church, listened to the sweet-nothings whispered in their ears by the snakes in the grass. Instead of honoring and respecting the men who stood firm, they started attacking the men, calling them all sorts of names and saying they were preventing the garden from growing to its full potential. The people happily widened the passes, flattening them, drilling through the mountains to make for even easier travel.
The Catholic Church, like the larger Society, always takes the easy way out. They betray their own. They forego traditions that have been practiced for hundreds of years. How can anyone take them seriously when they can never know where the next betrayal will come from?
When you look at the muslims, they stand strong together and will chop your head off if you go against them. Leaving that cult comes with an automatic death sentence and they don't care if anyone outside of their group thinks that's barbaric. They take care of their own. They network within their group. They build each other up. And they absolutely do not bend the knee to outsiders who demand "reform". They say homosexuality is bad and throw gays off rooftops wherever they find them.
You might not agree with that, but you have to respect their firm adherence to what they claim to believe. Even when the appear to be going along with the culture at large, they are always working to better their cult, to garner more wealth and power for their kind. You don't have to like it, but you have to agree that they stand firmly.
Where do you see that in Christendom? As an outsider looking in, that agnostic Shia spoke of, I see only betrayal and surrender in the Christian world. I see fear and timidity, and it doesn't inspire me to join. As Shia noted, he was surprised to learn of this tough, masculine Padre Pio because that's something he never associated with christianity. He, like so many others, grew up with the idea that christ was weak and cowardly, beaten and slaughtered, and the christians he knew in his own life actually lived just like that. The christians he knew, like so many of us know, are hypocritical to a large extent, but also have no iron in their spines. Who wants to be a part of that? It's wholly unappealing, but the church has embraced this hippy-dippy feminine way that's ultimately self-destructive, as we've seen.
In the end, I really enjoyed Shia's interview and learning more about Padre Pio. I hope the Catholics will turn their church around, and I think the Latin Mass is a good first step.

My generation, ( born 1960) has been robbed of the beauty and sacredness of TLM. I still remember kneeling down and receiving on the tongue at the Communion rail. Then they took it all away. I have suffered through nearly 52 yrs of the NO Mass, but last year I found a Latin Mass Parish and joined there. I feel like crying nearly every Mass and sometimes do. The sacredness, beauty and reverence are overwhelming. Like others have said, I feel like I'm home !
I saw the interview with Bishop Barron, and I’ve put added him to my prayer list. Conversion to Catholicism is almost always extremely difficult, there’s a honeymoon period and the world does its worst, or best, to pull people out of it.
I am a NO Catholic born in 1969. I went to Catholic school for 12 years and did study Latin and found an FSSP parish when I moved to Southern California. My first experience with the Tridentine Mass was accidental; I took my family to the 1 pm Mass at St Bonaventura Mission in Ventura. My second and third experience were also accidental, Sunday Mass at Westminster Cathedral (NOT Westminster Abby which the C of E stole from us) in London. And the next year back in London again I went to 11 o’clock Mass at St Stephen’s in Spanish Square before I flew home to LAX and it also just happened to be the Tridentine Mass. lol
I decided if I could find a non-schismatic parish close to me that offered it, I would go, and I did. St. Vitus in San Fernando.
I also grew up with one of the first episcopal priests to become a Byzantine Rite Catholic priest under the ordinariate created by Pope John Paul II, Fr. Doug Lorig, so I also love and have a deep appreciation for the united Orthodox rites, so beautiful and so symbolic.
I think, if we go back and do a thorough examination of the second Vatican counsel and then completely undo all of the purposefully incorrectly implemented revisions (and I do believe it was a sinful and willfully deceitful and wrong implementation) and get to the actual heart of the real changes, that is where every truly faithful NO Catholic will find their home, including Bishop Barron.
There’s a beautiful young priest who has made it both his vocation and avocation to study Vatican II and pope Benedict’s (then Cardinal Ratzinger’s) notes as he was the Secretary. It’s incredible how much leeway was taken, how much error was ushered in, how almost nothing was implemented properly.

So since Vatican 2 we don't believe God is leading His church anymore?? Division is being created where there should be unity. We should go to the mass we feel comfortable with without judging others for the mass they prefer. @@barbarafenton1775 I 💯 believe that God through the Holy Spirit is leading the Catholic Church. It’s never been a doubt in my mind. If the Church had been dependent upon all of us weak, flawed, broken humans, we would have disappeared with the first executions in Rome.
I do believe that Vatican II is valid, and it’s actually an extremely beautiful restatement of the Catholic Faith. If you read my comment again you’ll see that I purposefully found a non-schismatic parish. I think that the LeFevre-ites are misguided at best and prideful, sinful and disobedient to God’s will at the worst.
What I did say, however, was that a great deal of what was actually stated in Vatican II was misrepresented on purpose, and several changes were implemented in error. Those implementation errors varied from country to country around the world, and for varying reasons and due to various human agendas. This has historically happened after any substantive changes in the 2000 year history of the Church. The pendulum swings wide one way, then swings wide in the opposite direction. It has taken, on average, about 100 to 200 years to get all the knots worked out worldwide simply due to human nature and the sheer size of the Church. I’m a faithful Catholic. I believe both forms of the Mass are valid, just as I believe the reunited Orthodox Masses are valid. I’ve attended the NO Mass all my life. I made all my sacraments in it. I still teach catechism in a NO parish and I still love my parish and go to Mass there. Attending Mass at the FSSP parish is a personal choice that I make more often than not.
Catholicism doesn't need to satisfy everybody's tastes as Barron says. There are 40000 other denominations that have tried doing that. We have the Source and Summit. End of lesson. Great show KH!

Bishop Barron has changed so many hearts with his work at Word on Fire. He is a great shepherd. Why condemn him? Is it possible to have many paths to relationship with our Lord, including the Novus Ordo? We should rejoice in Shia's journey to the truth, not condemn others that don't choose the path that spoke to his heart.
I served Latin mass, prayed in Latin for 10 years and can tell u mass in English with blue jeans and acoustic guitars cannot compare. Incense, wine, the prayers etc were Beautiful.
My ancestors in Vietnam certainly didn’t understand everything in the Latin Mass. But they were ready to die for the Faith. I noticed that there are very few, if any, martyrs since Vatican II in Vietnam or anywhere in the world for that matter.
Christians are still dying for their faith. Maybe not in your neighborhood but definitely in other parts of the world

Shia's conversion story is so compelling and gets right to the heart of the truth and beauty of Catholicism, especially for men. Barron doesn't get it. It's like he can't get that deep. Throughout that whole interview, I found myself wishing he was being interviewed by a more intellectual and traditional priest, or at least one who knows better than to discount and brush off what Shia was saying about TLM. Anyway, thanks for calling this out.
We took a trip to Italy and did the obligatory trip to the Vatican. They had started the Latin mass while we were there so we sat down. My husband never experienced a mass - let alone a Latin mass before. As a basically non-religious person he said he loved it! He said he felt it was so special. We ended up staying in that place for 7 hours! We didn’t want to leave. It was so special. How can Francis ban it???

Kennedy, I listened to your interview with Eric Sammons, and I was shocked how similar your story was to mine and every other man at our chapel. There is an intensity that humbles the soul at the TLM. Jordan Peterson in his interview with Bishop Barron basically said what the church offers is not challenging. And that’s the key. Sacrifice and challenge are attractive to people…men in particular because that is what we are called to do by nature. This is why Francis of Assisi had so many men follow what looks to be a crazy life in secular eyes. Praise God for this “big fish” that was reeled in.
There is no right or wrong when comparing both mass types. It boils down to what's best for you as the individual. Everything being explained whether it be via Shia or Bishop Barron, it's all perspective and personal testimony. Everyone has their own perspective of what value either type of mass brings to them. If Latin mass is good for you, then go to Latin mass. If new mass is good for you, then obviously attend new mass. At the end of the day, both types of mass contain value in terms of worship and being fed the word of God.

I only knew the Immemorial Mass until after V2. Then we had no choice. After years of this novelty that kept morphing from banal to utter desacralization, I felt I was going to lose the faith. Tradition is the faith and the faith is Tradition. The Mass of the ages is not a preference it is necessary. How you worship is how you believe.
You're speaking nonsense with big words. Latin at one time was the vernacular tongue, hence Jerome's need to create what we call the Vulgate. Greek had fallen into disuse. Latin enjoyed a heck of run, well into the 16th century as the theological go-to, and into the 18th century in Law, and even into today, but it's no one's native language. Faith (Greek: "pistis") is far more than tradition, and you know all this stuff, I'm sure. I encourage you to walk in what you know, not your miffed feelings: "Happy is he who is not offended in me."

I do pray for the Church and her baptized children in Her hierarchy and Her laity, however, Bishop Barron, full of worldly knowledge and VII 'spirit', doesn't attempt to catch when Shia throws him 'the pearl of great price'. I had no inkling of TLM/Trad Catholicism in general. In 2020 I started viewing TLMs for Sunday Mass, I could find a Western European Mass in Latin and their vernacular. I was home. Then I watched a local diocesan priest celebrate his ordination anniversary Mass TLM and I knew it was the Mass of my parents and grandparents. I felt cheated. Paraphrasing Dr. Peter K's book, True Obedience, it describes how 'trying to take away the TLM' wrenches us from the saints before us. Good episode Mr. K.
Pray for Bishop Barron, that the Holy Spirit fills his heart and soul with the Hope, Joy and Peace, that has filled Shia.

I think his interview with Shia shows that he feels that newness because he appreciated it enough to invite Shia to share his experiences in an interview. Maybe the prayer should be redirected towards God giving bishop Barron the strength to continue to do the great things he is doing for the church?

I grew up with it every day from ages 6 thru 14. 800 children kneeling on canvas tarp every day throughout the school year Grades 1 thru 8. Ad orienting/Latin NOT ONE SOUND OR MOVEMENT WHEN THE BELLS RANG AT THE CONSECRATION. I’ll never forget it as long as I live 73 years old. I went NO Mass for many years post Vatican II- recently went back to Latin Mass, so holy/profoundly revenant.
I went to my first TLM June of 2022 a few weeks before my 22nd birthday. I never knew there was a TLM run by the FSSP about 15 minutes from my house but I had a friend that went who urged me to go so I went with my brothers who’s been there before and I just remember feeling like it was a completely different religion but I knew it was Catholic and it was the most beautiful mass I’d ever been to. I tried to follow along with the red Latin to English missal but eventually I just put it down and “Let go and let God” just like what Kennedy said. I was so skeptical about Latin mass before and I thought the people who were advocates for it were just crazy rad trads but after experiencing it I apologized to them and ended up thanking them for inviting me to go and told them how beautiful it was!
Any prodigal son sees where the truth of Christ is and clings to it at all costs. Anyone who has been through hell can see how corrupt our mother church has become.

...many of my friends & family. A longing-yes a home sickness without it. It's hard going to N.O. now.
So happy for you that you found that. Your family and friends don't have to understand because it is your personal journey with God. Don't discount the N.O. Mass. God uses both Masses and Jesus is present in the Eucharist for both rites. Focus on Jesus and it will be easy to get through anything. Like Peter walking on water because he focused on Jesus.
I looked for this interview of Shia with Bishop Barron after seeing the trailer of the film on Padre Pio (which I would love to see) and I was very impressed by the sincerity of this actor who I had never followed before, he says the things he has in his heart with incredible simplicity! I remember the discomfort I felt as a child in the Novus Ordo Mass, all those noises and guitars and no one is ever silent even for a minute and you had to constantly do something and if you didn't do it they forced you because you could not be the different one, then one day I saw the film on Don Camillo taken from the stories of Giovannino Guareschi and I started reading his books and I remember that as a girl I was very sad because those priests and those Masses no longer existed in my country ... No one ever spoke of the Mass in Latin, he named himself Monsignor Lefebvre as if he had been the devil himself, quietly, with terror ... and only after many years I searched the net for the Society of St. Pius X and what was my surprise to see that there were still priests I had dreamed of meeting as a child and who said that Mass that I had always wanted without even knowing that it still existed or that it had never existed, I was born in 1970 and for me there has never been a before Vatican Council II ... So I understand very well what Shia is talking about or what you also say Kennedy, to be in a place where you would like to be and you do not understand what is happening and the first times that great effort, it helped me a lot to follow the online Mass of the SSPX of the Priory of Rimini, the more I looked the more I understood, now it is much easier for me, too bad that there are no priests who say Mass in Latin and the first Priory of the SSPX is 150 km away.
