  • We’ve driven on GBC’s Dirt Commander Tires in the desert and mountains of California, in the brown loamy soil of Montana, and on the gnarly rocky trails of Brimstone in Huntsville, Tennessee. They’ve proven pretty versatile, providing control and confidence in most situations and soil types. In our opinion, they’re good on hard surfaces, great deep loose soils, and will hold their own in the mud with good cleanout.
Forward traction is good in all but the deepest of mud holes. They’ll claw their way up a slick wet creek bank or steep, chunky rock strewn hills with relative ease. We conquered some pretty intimidating hills comprised of flat rock and hard-packed dirt with good hookup and control going up and down. Dirt Commanders are most at home in darker loamy soil and can hold their own in the sand, where their tread offers a great balance of spacing and depth, providing great hookup and good cornering control. Braking hookup is equally balanced with acceleration in all conditions.
In dry, hard-packed conditions, the Dirt Commanders provide sufficient traction on sidehills, but lack the side bite of the Mongrels when cornering at high speeds requiring a bit more throttle control and restraint. Steering precision is pretty predictable in these conditions, working best in four-wheel-drive where the front tires help pull the car through turns.
For most situations, we ran 14-16 pounds of pressure in the tires maximizing traction and ride quality while driving at a good clip. If we were concerned with cutting a tire in the rocks or we wanted to prevent framing out on larger jumps than you see here, we’d up the pressure to between 20 and 22 pounds.
As a tire with a more open tread pattern that’s designed to work in most trail conditions, wear factor is decent. The tread seems to wear pretty evenly with little chunking. If you run one of the 10” wide sizes front and rear, you can interchange them and prolong tire life.
    Conclusion
The Dirt Commanders are great all-terrain, all-condition tires. They perform best in intermediate soil conditions allowing them to work well almost anywhere. We’d consider them good for the desert and a top tire choice in the woods whether you’re tooling around with your friends or chasing points in a cross country racing series.

I have 2017 Polaris rzr 900 eps trail. I am running 26x9-12 s on all 4 corners. I love them, they are an excellent all around 8 ply tire. In the northeast here where I ride it is extremely rocky and sharp where I go and these can take a beating. Mud , dirt, rocks, whatevever. I also purchased a 5th tire for a fully mounted spare just in case. For the price, cant be beat in my opinion.

You guys are insane running that much pressure in those tires. I run 8 lbs in my stock bighorns on my XP1000. I run rocky trails at high speed. No problems.

I love my Dirt Commanders! Mine are on a Grizzly 550 and have done well in rocky or soft conditions. I also conquered a couple decent mud holes with them. NCMudman put me onto these tires last year. Mine have held up well in the wear category also.

While your testing Polaris atvs do you find them to be reliable, when I read different forums some people say they will never buy another Polaris others say they’re great. Have you ever had any problems with Polaris atvs or utvs?
    Thanks

Hatdog11 this could be a 15 paragraph answer. The short version is this. Any machine can be broken and we don't know how the people who complain about Polaris reliability issues are using their equipment. Are they taking care of it or are they just beating the crap out of it and putting it away? We typically put hundreds of miles on the ATVs we test although we have put thousands of miles on some UTV's. On the ATV Side we have had virtually no issues that weren't self-inflicted, usually broken body panels from a get off. On the UTV side we have broken a few axles from Landing Full Throttle for video to keep the nose in the air. We have also had to replace a belt or two for not properly breaking a belt in before a video shoot. Typically, we don't suffer from all of the reliability issues that other owners complain of. We suspect that it has partly to do with the fact that we don't rack up as many miles as some, we also suspect that we are simply doing a better job of taking care of our test units before, during, and after the ride. We don't typically suffer from belt issues because we shift into low range whenever we're driving or riding at lower speeds for a prolonged period of time. We also know to vary our speed somewhat regularly wooden covering a lot of ground to keep belt temperatures from building up. When we land from jumps, we typically get off the gas so we don't put a lot of shock through the drivelines. This works on 1500 lb razors or 800lb ATVs. We aren't saying that there's nothing to the complaints, but we can't say we don't suffer from the high attrition rate that we have heard of other owners suffering from. Maybe there's something to it and maybe we're just taking better care of our equipment. There may still be something to the belief that the Japanese manufacturer is still have Superior durability. However, Polaris does build a good product and there's no doubt who's delivering in the horsepower Department if that is a major factor for you.

Hatdog11 ive got a sportsman 1000xp. The front diff is the downfall. Hd atv gear pinion bearing plate upgrade is a must on the 850 and 1000 sportsman and scrambler models. I just saw a 2018 in my local dealer. Looks to be the same shitty front diff. As for engine no problems. I did blow the stock belt and upgraded to a dayco xtx and never looked back. Ive got 3200km with lots of plowing snow and winter riding and is been pretty good even with the 30 inch monstermayham tires. Would i buy polaris again ... no. Yamaha is the only way to go if you want reliable

Could have been luck, could have been tire pressure, we have not heard of these being problematic tires. We appreciate the comment and you sharing your experience though.
