I consider myself an advanced knitter but have been intimidated to try brioche. Just now I checked out some RUclips videos on the techinque, but they were all loooong and complicated seeming. Then I found yours! Short, sweet, to the point ... thank you so much!!!
You are most welcome, Donna :-) I'm happy that this tutorial helped you make friends with brioche stitch. Happy knitting!
I always thought brioche was an advanced technique. You made it look so easy!
Nothing is too complicated in knitting as long as you know what you are doing :-) Happy knitting, Barb!
I have struggled with brioche for years. Been knitting 24 years. This somehow makes it make sense. Thank you!!! ❤️
Happy to help! Thank you :-)
this is the most clear and concise and easy to follow brioche stitch tutorial i've ever seen!! this helped me so much 💕
Look mum! I'm doing it!
I watched a dozen other tutorials and couldn't get it, until your video. This is THE definitive brioche tutorial. Also the tip to combine the yarn over with the slip is the absolute game changer! It makes the workflow that much more simple and fluid. With this method, I finally see how the brioche is considered an 'easy' pattern. 💖 Thank you so much!
This is the best explanation of brioche knitting I have seen thus far. Thank you! 🙏🙏❤️
Your technique is the only understandable one I have found. Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorial!!
Thank you, Jaimie :-) Happy knitting!
Yes, the best explanation! Finally I understand it.After years!!
This is awesome! I've been wasting my time watching other tutorials. Your video should be on the top of the search list!
Thank you, Fren :-)
So happy that I found your chanel. I almost gave up learning brioche after I've watched 20+ videos. Thank you so much!
You are most welcome :-) Happy brioche-knitting!
I started a brioche scarf and put it aside for about a year. When I picked it up just now I had completely forgotten how to do the brioche stitch! Thankfully I’d saved this video and you’ve taught me again 😊 Thanks!
You are an amazing knitter and the most didactic teacher I've seen on RUclips!! MANY THANKS, REALLY!
Thank you for sharing this technique. ❤
I am new to knitting (learned English style as a child but not knitted for almost 50 years!) and have used your videos to help me get to grips with Continental style - which I have now finally learned (although still slow!). I want to knit a scarf that uses brioche stitch and your video is fabulous! Thank you for your clear and easy to follow videos! :)
Thank you, Margo! I am happy I could help you get back to knitting 🙂
Thank you for a concise easy tutorial! It is so difficult sometimes to find something that doesn’t ramble on and on. This is great! And I am a new subbie !!!!
U are my new favorite RUclips channel!! Ty
This is the best and easiest Brioche knitting tutorial I have seen. Thanks so much for your excellent video tutorials! I can’t wait to try brioche knitting! 😊
Great easy to follow, clear, and well demonstrated stitch tutorial! THANK YOU for demystifying this lovely but seemingly difficult and intimidating (which you proved wrong!) stitch.
This helped me so much!! You really simplified the technique and made it easy to learn and I am so grateful!
Thank you, Nina. I'm happy this tutorial helped you make friends with brioche stitch :-)
Where have you been all my knitting life?? LOVE your presentation, your clarity. Thank you!! (On my way to your other videos...)
Thank you, Mulvene :-) Happy knitting!

Gosh I was so sure this was complicated but you made this video for me! Because my brain understood you ❤
I am so glad I could help :-) Happy knitting, my friend!
Beautiful! Thank you for simplifying the instructions.
Thank you for the large yarn & needles. So easy to see what you’re doing. Also you look lovely in your pink sweater.💃🏻
Thank you, Rosalind :-)
You’re welcome 💃🏻
WOW when you explain and show how to make the stitch you make it so much easier to know what to do. Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure, Linda :-)
Thank you for this video and the tips! Knitting the selvedge at the sides helps keep the yarn overs in place and saves me from knitting a decorative edge.
Thank you, you made this look so easy and attemptable💕
Will try it for my next project!
Thank you, Sharika! I am happy to know that my explanation makes sense to you. Thank you, my friend 🙏
Great video! Nice and clear and totally demystified this stitching! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Perfect demonstration - now I get it!!!! Thank you!!!!
My next scarf project, just lovely and...easy! Thank you!
Brioche is a perfect choice for a scarf! You are absolutely right - it is easy and creates a gorgeous scarf :-)
Thanks so much . You made it easier to understand 👍
Oh my! I have tried brioche and was able to do it, but then got confused 🤷♀️. (Of course I had to try a complicated pattern, 😆). This is so simple! Thank you 😊!
Dear 10rowsaday, thank you for making this tutorial! Now I REALLY know how to knit a scarf in this pattern! And indeed, you did make it easy. I had always heard that brioche knitting was difficult. Thank you again.
Thank you, Katherine :-) I'm so glad that this tutorial helped you to make friends with brioche stitch. Happy knitting, my friend!
Thank you! So easy to follow!
Thank you very much for your tutorial. You make it look so easy. Your instructions were easy to understand and follow. I will try this for a scarf.
Thank you, Tammy :-) Happy knitting!
Thank you Maryna best and easiest ever pattern ♥👌👌👌💕
Thank you, Mary :-)
Thank you very much. I decided to knitt a scarf for my sun with this pattern. 💖
Happy to hear that, Azadeh! It would be a gorgeous scarf :-)
Thank you so much for your advice! I will try.
Thank you for this very easy to follow tutorial! I'm learning brioche stitch for a sweater pattern I just started.
Thank you, Nancy :-) I'm happy to know that you find this tutorial easy to follow. Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment. I appreciate it a lot.
Many thanks, very well explained!!
EXCELLENT explanation!!!!
Thank you for this! I knit a brioche scarf when I was beginning to knit... and now I'm trying a brioche sweater many years later and it's kicking my butt! Honestly I think not knowing what I was doing really helped haha
I agree - sometimes it is better to simply trust our instincts :-) Good luck with the sweater!
Thank you so such a nice and easy video !!!! ☺
Another wonderful tutorial, thank you so much! I love your tip for working a yarn over with the next stitch, so simple, and so obvious, but I've never thought to do it! I shall from now on.
Thank you, Sally :-) Speaking of that tip, there is one little thing to keep in mind - it won't be as easy to slip the yarn over together with the stitch if you hold the yarn in your right hand (the English way of knitting). In that case, it's better to make a yarn over first and then slip the next stitch purlwise. Happy brioche knitting! :-)
Aaah, of course! I knit the English way, so probably no good for me. I've considered relearning your way, as it looks so efficient and fast, but I've been knitting the English way for over 50 years and can't face trying to change!!!
Give it a try. It might work for you. Even within one knitting style, we all have different habits and ways of knitting and purling. Who knows, maybe this little trick will fit perfectly into your personal style? :-)
I'll give it a go next time I need to yarn over, thanks Maryna. x
This so easy thank you so much !
You are amazing - and make it look so easy!!
Thank you, Betty :-)
Very nice. Thank You!🌸
Thank your for this! It helped me tremendously, especially because you knit in the continental style.
Is 'continental style' left handed? Because the yarn is being wrapped from the left...I have only done it from the right!
@@pedrod7153 Yes, the loose end of the yarn is held in the left hand, similar to crocheting. It is faster than the English way, I think. The yarn is not wrapped, it is just picked through the stitch. Look it up on YT videos.
Wow! Now that is easy! And the use of large needles leaves less margin for confusion for me!
A thousand thank yous! 💙🦋
Thank you, Carla :-)
So useful - as usual!
Thank you. It is easy !
Very helpful. Thanks
Thank you, you make me believe I can do all o' yer tricks with sticks... I've been looking through your library savings some videos that might help me when I actually go and find my two pair of sticks I've packed away for when I was going to learn knitting. Well now I'm learning tips and tricks but can't find my sticks. I'm just about to go sharpen a couple of pencils and use some gray yarn just so I can start Something!
Thank you, my friend :-) Happy knitting!
I can't seem to get the trick of keeping the yarn in front but I did finally make a decent brioche swatch. Thank you!
Thank you again 💗
Oh my, it is the best explanation I've seen. I can finally understand how to do it. Thank you !!!
You are most welcome, Olga. I'm happy I could help :-)
@@10rowsaday Would be great if you could do a two colour brioche video too. 😉
It's in the plans. Stay tuned :-)
True
You seem to be able to make everything seem approachable and unintimidating! It's great!
Thank you, my friend 🙏
Nice
Thank you!
You've made it look so easy..... Thks a ton!
Děkuji za jednoduchý návod vzoru brioche👍🤔
You are most welcome, my friend :-) Happy knitting!
thank you for the pattern, looks great :)
Thank you so much..
You're most welcome :-)
Could you do a tutorial on two colour brioche in the round? Specifically, I'm struggling with the colour change at the beginning/end of the round. Thanks so much, your videos are the best!
Thank you for the suggestion, Gina :-) I'll add it to my to-do list. Normally, it is easier to work two-colour brioche in the round than back-and-forth because there is no need to slide stitches on the needle to get to the "right" strand of yarn. Both strands "meet" at the beginning of the round and we simply pick the strand that is in a different colour than the colour used to work the previous round. The change of colours happens smoothly without any issues. If you are having issues with the change of colours, send me a message with more details about what's going wrong, and I'll do my best to help :-)
Lovely ❤ I wonder whether Italian bind off would finish it off nicely
That's an interesting idea. It could work, but only if you work preparation rows or rounds (slipping every other stitch) before you bind off stitches. These rows will make the edge less elastic, so that it could keep brioche fabric from stretching out too much. Good luck :-)
I know this is an old video but I have just made a commitment to learn how to do brioche well. Your instructions are always very clear AND you knit continental style!!! So thank you
My question is: what is the difference between brioche and fisherman knit stitches - aside from the technique, of course. The fabric from both seem quite similar
Again, thank you
Hello Diane. Fisherman's rib is a variation of brioche stitch. Just like the classic brioche, It forms a gorgeous highly-textured fabric, but it have a different look. Happy knitting :-)
Please, do the tutorial on brioche knitting with two colors, and also on decreasing and increasing on brioche stitch. thanks.
Thank you so much for the suggestion. I'll add these topics to my "to-do" list. Happy knitting :-)
Thanks for the cool video! I have one question though - how do you count the rows in brioche sticking? Do you count the vertical Vs, or does it work differently?
Each vertical V in brioche equals two regular rows or one "brioche row". Happy knitting :-)
In order to get the three dimensional feel and the depth of this stitch I get it with the fisherman's stitch.
Fisherman's rib is a variation of brioche stitch, and it also has a beautiful texture.
Thanks for demonstration. Can you show how to fix brioche mistakes?
Thank you for the suggestion. Brioche mistakes are any knitter's nightmare. I'll look for simple ways to fix at least some of them.
😍😍
Oh that's what I did wrong! I wrapped the yarn-over in the wrong direction! I mean I really love what it's turning into so I'm gonna keep doing it but I was surprised it looked so different.
You are right, Sven - a regular yarn over and a reverse yarn over look very differently in the fabric, especially in brioche stitch. I'm happy you found out the reason why your brioche stitch didn't look the same. Happy knitting :-)
Great video...my stitches decreased in rusty
Thanks, could this be used for a heel?
Hi Samantha, Usually, it is recommended to make the heel part of a sock fairly dense to keep the heel from stretching and wearing off. Brioche stitch is loose and is not a very good option for heels. It works great for scarves, hats, cowls, cozy sweaters and cardigans - anything that you'd like to be fluffy and warm. Happy knitting :-)
Great video...very concise. In result, what is the difference between brioche stitch and fisherman's rib? And also, is this stitch as difficult to repair as fisherman's rib? Lifelines required? Thanks very much.
Thank you, Monelle :-) As to the difference between the two stitch patterns, fisherman's rib is a variation of brioche stitch, we can probably call it "half-brioche" because one row is worked as brioche, and one row is worked almost like a ribbing. Yes, it could be quite tough to repair it, and a lifeline helps a lot :-) Happy knitting!
@@10rowsaday- Thanks much, but I work every row the same in Fisherman's Rib ... ? I'm wondering which stitch is faster to work ... Fisherman's is so slow!
Sorry, I haven't considered different ways of making fisherman's rib. The way you are using is probably not the same as the one I usually use. If you are interested, I [make a yarn over + slip 1, knit 1] in row 1, and [purl 1, knit 2 together] in row 2. Work brackets to the end of the row. There are also several ways to work brioche stitch. The easiest one I know is explained in this video. The best way to know which stitch pattern works faster for you is to try both and decide for yourself :-)
Great video!! This is a stitch I have always wanted to do. Not as difficult as I thought.....Thank you for sharing.
I’ve been knitting this exact stitch for hats and scarves I make for charity. Been just using one color because I’m not sure how to change colors smoothly. Is there a way to do so?
Sure. Two-colour brioche is pretty straightforward. Here's a tutorial that explains how it works - www.10rowsaday.com/colourful-brioche Have fun :-)
It would be nice to use a tubular cast-on with matching tubular bind-off for a brioche scarf. Is it possible to do that and maintain your elegant selvedge edges too?
Of course, it is possible. You can use any type of cast on and bind off method you like, but because the texture of brioche stitch is so puffy, it needs sturdier cast on and bind off edges to keep it from stretching out. That's why I usually don't use tubular cast on for projects worked in brioche stitch. If you feel that your project will benefit from a stretchy cast on and bind off edges, try it on a swatch first. Happy knitting :-)
@@10rowsaday Good to know, thank you for your answer and for all of your excellent tutorials! :)
How do you add new yarn if you run out of yarn in the middle of your project? Thank you
Hi Dorothy. It is better to join yarn at the sides of the project. If the yarn that you have left is not longer than at least three times the width of the fabric, then, most likely, you won't have enough yarn to work one more row. Unless the yarn is bulky or extremely expensive, it is better to attach a new ball of yarn before you start a new row. If you knit with bulky yarn, use the trick explained in this tutorial - www.10rowsaday.com/split-join - to make the place of join almost invisible even when you join the yarn in the middle of a row. Happy knitting :-)
The edges look much better if you treat them the same as all the all the other stitches in all rows.
That is: one row: slip with yarn over, next row knit with yarn over.
Have you ever tried this?
Thank you for the tip, Mario. I'll give it a try.
what is the difference between this and regular ribbing, k1,p1 ???
Yarn overs. That's what makes the texture of brioche stitch so luscious. Happy knitting, Leah :-)
Help my brioche is too tight! I'm following your instructions, but i don't know what im doing wrong
figured out my mistake
I am glad you did. Thank you for letting me know. Happy knitting!
How would you knit this pattern in the round? I am knitting a sweater in the round
Hi Leah. Here's a link to a tutorial that explains how to knit brioche stitch in the round - www.10rowsaday.com/brioche-stitch-round Happy knitting, my friend :-)
@@10rowsaday Thank you, I did it
Does it matter which way you cast on?
Not really. I usually use long-tail cast on, but any other method that forms a sturdy edge will work fine. Happy knitting!
@@10rowsaday thank you so much! I’ve been using it now and it gives such a nice edge! I also figured out that if I purl the first and last stitch that neatens things up quite a bit for a garter knit. So many fund things to learn!
It seems complicated when most knitters slip the purls and the brioche stitches always with the yarn in front. What's the difference in the resulr?
Hello Nora, to get the honeycomb texture, we should slip stitches with the yarn at the back of the work. Happy knitting :-)
I have seen other knitters that knit the knit the brioche stitches with the yarn in front. The is more confusing. Is it just another version?
There are a few ways to make brioche stitch. The way described in this tutorial is the easiest (in my opinion) to learn. But if you prefer to use a different method, that's perfectly fine. Happy knitting, my friend :-)
I have tried time after time to do this stitch but it's not coming out correct. I then downloaded a pattern, and it's identical to what you are doing, but I am still not getting the stitch right.
Try to talk yourself through each stitch. We often make mistakes without realizing that we stray from the pattern instructions. It helps to repeat the pattern instructions to yourself as you work each stitch. Also, make sure you have an even number of stitches on the needles, and try to work with a yarn in a light colour to help you better see the stitches as you practice. If none of this helps, take a close-up photo of your swatch and email it to me. I'll try to understand what goes wrong. Happy knitting :-)
In the round
Hi Erika, Here's a tutorial that explains how to work brioche stitch in the round - www.10rowsaday.com/brioche-stitch-round Happy knitting :-)
I don't understand how to continue from there
Simply repeat the working row described in this tutorial until the project gets as big as you want. If you prefer to follow written instructions, go to www.10rowsaday.com/easy-brioche Happy knitting!
Can't follow continental style. Maybe you could make a video with normal knitting.
Linda, the only difference between the English and the Continental knitting styles is the way we hold yarn. Whenever I wrap the tip of the right needle using the yarn held in my left hand, you do exactly the same thing but with the yarn held in your right hand. Otherwise, these knitting styles are identical.
Va rog ,multiplu de cate ochiuri ?
Hi Cristina. Google Translate translated your comment as "Please, multiple stitches". If this translation is correct, please specify what exactly do you mean? Many thanks :-)
@@10rowsaday As dori sa stiu la acest model ,multiplu de cate ochiuri necesita modelul ???Multumesc !!!
Even doesn't work out because there's 2 extra stitches when you finish a row
There shouldn't be any extra stitches left. It is possible that there is something off with the stitch count. Please email me a well-lit close-up photo of your swatch, and I'll try to figure out what went wrong. My email address is maryna [at] 10rowsaday.com Thank you.
thank you! I hate the bark terminology, it messes me up. You show the stitches, who cares what they are called
You speak well but the yarn and the needles match so I can't tell what's going on
Sorry about that, Carol. You can also learn this technique from the detailed photo tutorial. You'll find it at www.10rowsaday.com/easy-brioche Happy knitting :-)
