Hello, could this stitch also b called the Fisherman's Rib? The reason I ask is that I am attempting to knit the Fisherman's Rib Beret and the instructions are almost like this and I don't understand the instructions. I hope you can help me interpret them because I really really want to knit this beret for my mom who loves it.
Row 1: k1, p1 and repeat across the row on an even number of stitches.
Row 2: k1, yo, sl 1 across the row
Row 3: k1 yo and sl1 from the prev row, yo, sl1 (knit the stitch that was slipped in the previous row together with its yarn over)? yo, sl1
Row 4: Repeat row 3
The pattern is on ABC Knitting

Abbreviations:
- K: Knit
- YF SL YO: Yarn forward, slip stitch yarn over.Bring working yarn to front under the needle, slip 1 stitch purlwise, bring working yarn over top of needle to the back. This produces a yarn over that crosses over the slipped stitch.
- BRK: Brioche knit.Knit the stitch that was slipped in the previous row together with its yarn over.

+Shelia Wilson - Fisherman's Rib and Brioche are different. With Fisherman's Rib, you knit or purl in the space below the stitch. There are no yarn over stitches.

I've been watching beginner knitting tutorials. I like yours, because I can pause it, read the stitch pattern, and then repeat the pattern to my self, as you demonstrate the stitch. I find this to be an excellent teaching video for myself.

I think it boils down to this: Brioche knitting is a lot harder to describe than to do. And, at least for me, to see it done slowly and repeatedly is the best way to learn. I found this uncluttered video without audio to be the best starting point to learn brioche knitting. With it you make a swatch using an even number of stitches in a single color with no fussing over the cast on or selvages. That can come later. Crawl before you walk. It quickly became comfortable for me. And, to make it even easier, in the single color brioche shown here you repeat the same steps in every row front and back. (The setup row differs only in that it doesn't yet have the yarnovers across the stitches you will knit.) After watching and playing back over and over I only then paid attention to what the steps I was now familiar with were being called and suddenly it wasn't so frightening. What you will learn here is slipping the first stitch with the yarn held in front which in written form is yf, sl1yo. The confusing part for me was that the yo part of that really happens as you go into the next movement which is the k1 and here is where it becomes the "shawl" Nancy Marchant talks about as it comes to rest across the top of the slipped stitch. Maybe it should be called "sl1yok1". I also found that after I had finally grasped the steps, holding the yarn continental style as I am used to knitting was a piece of cake and promises to be faster for me than holding it English style. Thank you so much. My brain is no longer locked up on this. I am off and running to watch your two color video!

Thank you -- now that I've actually tried it, your video has helped me see where I was making a mistake. I was sometimes getting the YOs backwards (impossible to work in the next round), but you divide the sl1yo command into two steps, the way it occurs in practice, which makes it much easier to do in sequence and get it right.
The annoying thing about brioche, is that it's so easy! It looks as if it should be much harder, allowing my mind to invent new ways to complicate it.
This is the clearest version I have seen!!!!!! Thank you!!!!

In the pattern row instructions: What does the abbreviation "BRK1" stand for? I know that YF is " yarn forward", and SL1 is to "slip one stitch", and YO is" yarn over" and K1 is "knit one stich". But what exactly does the "BR" in the BRK1 stand for? I've watched the video and I see what the technique is but what does it actually mean? And also I just want to say Thank you so much for demonstrating this Brioche Stitch pattern; it's a lovely stich and I'm working up a practice swatch so I can eventually make a scarf. Like a lot of knitters here, I'm more of a visual learner, so this video has been extremely helpful to me.
BRK (sometimes pronounced "bark") stands for BRioche Knit.
There is also a BRP (sometimes pronounced "burp"), which is the abbreviation for BRioche Purl stitch.

The Brioche and the Fishermans Rib is basically the same stitch it's just executed in a different way. It gives the same appearance. If you YT both stitches you will see what I mean. I have knitted a scarf in Fishermans Rib and I have knitted one in Brioche and they are exactly the same. Like I said it's just the technique that's different.

Tried this in the round and silly me... didn't think that when you never turn your work you have to work every odd row as BRP1 instead of BRK1! It's such a nice stretchy ribbing, I love it... until having to fix an error. I know it can be done, I'm just so new to the stitch that I get very confused with all the bars, figuring out which ones are live. Using a life line if something I'd strongly suggest if you're working on a larger project.

I'm a bit confused. It says to repeat pattern row until I reach the desired length, so does that mean I'm just repeating YF SL1 YO, BRK 1? That's how I originally interpreted it, but then I started wondering if I'm not supposed to be alternating that row with YF SL 1 YO, K1. Thanks to anyone who can clarify!

Does anyone knows wats the different of using even or odd number of stitches? I search some video and they are using odd and some other using even number of stitches, there must be some effect to the scarf right? Pls tell me the difference thank you so much
For K1, it looks like the yarn is wrapped in the opposite direction than a regular K1.

Hi, I'm still kind of a knitting newbie. Can you explain the code? I don't know that abbreviations/jargon.
YF is wrap the yarn on your right needle as if you were doing a purl stitch (not from the back in a knit stitch)
SL1 means slip 1 stitch, and usually it means slip purl wise. Just put your needle from top to bottom like you are doing a purl stitch but just pull that stitch off to the right needle (don't wrap the yarn to the front again like a real purl)
Then, just complete 1 knit stitch as normal.
If you need to breakdown further any pieces of this breakdown, there are tons of great videos explaining the purl stitch and yarn overs...it's how I learned!!! Good luck

Are you supposed to be losing stitches when you knit this stitch? Because I started out with 50 and now I have 35.
Start over. I ripped mine apart at least 10 times before I finally got it. If it looked strange, it's probably wrong. The sooner you rip it out the better.

It would be better if you explained the stitch whilst doing it.
This stitch is really heavy in yarn usage, a lot more than a usual rib pattern.

I'm having a really hard time correcting errors on this pattern. Can anyone show what it looks like to rethread the loops onto the needle if they fall off? The pattern is hard for me to figure out. I keep having to start over from scratch.

This is a good video to watch repeatedly. It's clear. When you finally understand the steps, you will laugh at how easy it is. First, you have to rip it apart 10 times or more. It least I did.
