    The brioche stitch is a lovely reversible knitting stitch pattern that creates a very voluminous fabric. After one preparation row, it's an easy 2 stitch repeat that is perfectly suitable for even knitting beginners.
    Here's the repeat:
    Cast on an odd number of stitches +6
    Row1 (preparation): K1, Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front, k1 *yarn over, slip 1 purlwise, k1*, yosl1p, k1, sl1pwif, k1
    Row 2 (first brioche pattern row): sl1pwif, k1, sl1, k2tog, sl1p k2tog, sl1pwif, k1, sl1pwif
    Row 3: k1, sl1pwif, k1 *sl1p, k2tog*, sl1p, k1, sl1pwif, k1
    repeat those last two rows over and over again.
    An easier way to describe the repeat is: Add a 3 stitch double stockinette stitch to either side and then, after a preparation row, k2tog all double stitches (where u did yo + sl1p in the previous round) and do a yosl1p for all single stitches.
    For the 2-colored brioche, you need to knit each round twice. So, cast on, and then slide the stitches to the other side and knit a preparation round across in a new color.
    Only then, turn around the project and knit across in the first color in the brioche stitch, but instead of k2tog, do a p2tog. Then, slide the stitches back the other end of the needle and knit across in the second color (with k2tog) one more time.
    From here, knit all rows twice (once with each color). And whenever a double stitch is below a knit ridge, k2tog, and whenever there'S a purl bump at it's base, do a p2tog.
    You can knit the brioche stitch in the round in the similar way. Just alternate between rows where you k2tog all double stitches and in the next round p2tog all double stitches.

    Just found your channel a few days ago, great turorials, easy to follow and nice and clear but have to say this one threw me a little as I was shown Brioche slightly differently, I was taught it as after the selvage knit one below then purl one and repeat which is nice and easy but I'm not sure how it would work with the 2 colours. will have to give this method a try to see how it compares.

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  2 года назад

      There are two ways to knit Brioche: Like the way I show you here and one shows you to knit one row below (sometimes this is also known as Fisherman's rib). I just feel this is the easier version.

    I just finished a hat in which the brim was brioche, and I love it! I need to watch your videos on how to increase and decrease because I don’t know how to do that. The other thing I have no idea how to do is fix brioche mistakes. My most common mistake is purling without doing the yarn over. So I’m a mess on the next round. If you have any references to share, I would be so appreciative! I ripped out my brim a few times because I didn’t know how to fix it. I know how to fix a dropped stitch, so it’s probably not that different, but something I just need to learn. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  2 года назад

      It's a little bit more difficult and fixing a missed yarn over always means frogging as you cannot add any slack to rows below. Don't have a video for it, tho 🤭

    Hi Norman, thank you so much for these videos! I'm a college student currently on winter break away from home and your videos have been keeping me great company these last two weeks while working on a 2 color brioche shawl. This has become my favorite knitting channel, I really like that you don't only give us instructions and tell us what to do, but you also explain the anatomy and mechanism in which things work. I mostly enjoy aran patterns, this is my first time doing brioche. Even though the right side of my project looks great, I have some tension issues on the wrong side, especially on the sections with increases and decreases. The stitches that are right next to decreases are loose and I cant really stretch the yarn into the decrease stitches because they're twisted and stacked one on top of another. I believe that this is normal, but is there any way to improve this?

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  Год назад +1

      there is...have you watched my brioche increase tutorials here? other than that...well..it's complicated but there are solutions.

    • @eastern_mimolette

      I searched up "nimbleneedles brioche" and this is the only video that showed up, for whatever reason your videos on increases and decreases didn't show up, nor did they ever appear in the recommended section while I was watching your other videos, I had to go to your channel and do a bunch of scrolling to find them. The youtube algorithm really works in mysterious ways! I put some more effort into stretching the yarn into the neighboring decrease stitches and it's starting to look a bit better, hopefully it'll completely even out after blocking. Thank you for replying!

    Thanks for the cool video! I have one question though - how do you count the rows in brioche sticking? Do you count the vertical Vs, or does it work differently?

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  Год назад +1

      well, that IS a difficult quesiton. If you count the Vs you will only count every second row that you've knitted. So you'd have to multiply that number.
      HOWEVER...since brioche is a form of double knitting, one could argue that actually the Vs represent one row. It's just that you split knitting that row into a 2-row repeat for convenience sake.

    Hi Norman! I love your videos and have learned so much from them! I have a question for you. I am practicing the two-colour brioche stitch and was wondering if there was a way to do the double stockinette stitch edge as my selvedge? I realize it would be a bit complicated, but I am not a fan of just doing a knit stitch. If it isn't possible, do you have any other selvedges that you personally think look good with 2C Brioche? Thanks!

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  Год назад

      Hmm...yes you can...but you have to twist the colors as you do the transition...kind like when you do intarsia. Even then, it's a bit more difficult to get it neat

    Hi Norman, wonder if you can create a tutorial on brioche knitting in the round and then turning it into a flat. • @Caloci76
    @Caloci76 2 года назад +1

    Thank you. I bought the yarn years ago to make What the Fade by Andrea Mowry. I did find it daunting and did not start it. I think the biggest thing is that you use simpler terminology compared to how she shows it in her tutorials. One thing I am wondering is if you put down your knitting before completing the 4 rows, how do you figure out where you left off other than making a detailed note. We all know that sometimes we have to put our knitting down and are not able to make a note. I also wanted to know if that is a Lamy Safari pen?

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  2 года назад +1

      the repeat is dead simple really if you stick to "knit the double stitches together and yarnover slip the single stitches". Then you can stop anywhere you like.
      I stick to simple terminology because it IS simple and using things like "brk" I dunno..i think it makes it just complicated.

    hi norman! thank you so much for the tutorial, lots of good, clear information as always! out of curiousity, would it be possible to use a double stockinette stitch selvage for 2 colour broiche? if so, how would it work? would you need to purl then slip knit wise and then purl on the purl rows? i'm very new to knitting and the mechanics of right side/wrong side knitting is something i struggle with, which is unfortunate as i'm trying to knit my boyfriend a scarf and i want to give him something as nice as possible 😅

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  2 года назад +1

      I haven't tried this yet but i sure think it could work. But essentially you would be working...well.pseudo-intarsia.
      So 3 stitches before the border, you'd have to cross the colors, then do the double stockinette stitch edge back and forth, cross the colors again and continue. In my mind it kind of makes sense, but dunno ^^

    I'm thinking of doing a brioche project soon, so this tutorial was great! I wonder though, for a two color project, wouldn't it be possible to knit the back and front in one go, holding both yarns like when knitting with two colors in general? I'm thinking one color would purl and one knit? Instead of doing the row again. But maybe I'm missing something?

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  2 года назад +1

      Yes, you could do that. It's a bit like double-knitting in that case, only you have to hold the yarns differently. Many find that a bit confusing :P
