Disposable Heroes is not a commonly known song outside of the metal community and it absolutely should be. An incredibly great song that I never get tired of listening to. Aggression, heaviness, speed, message, and musicianship is just great.
I have a feeling that most long time Metallica fans who also play guitar (like me) think Disposable Heroes might have the best guitar playing on the album. Especially the solo. 😵😎
This was our theme song during the Gulf War, with Delta co. 12th Engineer Battalion, out of Dexheim, (Devil's Home), Germany. We had four armored personnel carriers in our platoon that all had the names of Metallica songs painted on the sides. There was "Creeping Death", "Seek and Destroy", "Metal Militia" and honestly, I can't remember the last one, but I think it was "Damage Inc". We all made it back home, but we are still just empty shells.
Jeez bro, that's hardcore. Glad you all made it back safely. METTALICA has a lot of songs with the military and the plight of the soldiers involved in their music. I appreciate your service on behalf of the those who are living in a free country because of your efforts and sacrifices. Peace and best wishes to you and your family from Toronto 🤘🤘👏👏🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻Cheers to you all
This was released in 1986, an era of music which was all about girls and partying and falling in love... This was when hit songs were 'Take on me' (A-ha)... 'Home sweet home' (Motley Crue)... 'One more night' (Phil Collins)... 'The power of love' (Huey Lewis)... 'Be good to yourself' (Journey)... etc. In the middle of this, Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' drops... and it's the antithesis of everything that was popular that year. Shredding guitarz... slamming drums... lyrics about insanity, death and chaos... They made Ozzy Osbourne look tame by comparison as they opened his tour that year... Bon Jovi, Kiss, Europe, Dokken, Van Halen, and Journey ruled radio and MTV... Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, and Dio were the heavy metal stars... but Metallica conquered all in the underground w/ thrash metal and bands like Megadeth, Exodus, Slayer, Anthrax, etc. coming behind them... Soon, the hard rock and metal bands dominated the 80's and pushed keyboard bands like Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, Talk Talk, and A-ha, out of commercial popularity.
1986 was just a kick ass year for extreme metal in general. Master of Puppets, Reign in Blood, Peace Sells but Who's Buying?, Pleasure to Kill, Darkness Descends, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Morbid Visions, Beyond the Gates, Obsessed in Cruelty. So many classics.
Metallicas “One” changed my life forever when I was a kid. I was in 5th grade when it came out and I was hooked I had never heard anything like it before. It’s story was mind blowing to me.
Same here, especially when the double bass drums come in at the end together with that riff, I was hooked instantly. And the story / lyrics still get me everytime
One of the first if not the first album I listened to was... And Justice for All. The song itself.... And Justice for All really connected and resonated with me. I'd say it changed my life more than One did.
Metallica said in an interview once that they write about things that scare them. It's a way to release those fears and the anger you build up to fight them with. I've always said Metal isn't about being aggressive it's about releasing aggression.
I forgot how great this song was til I started watching people's reactions of it and seeing person after person after person blown away by it. This is truly a hidden gem in Metallica's arsenal.
I think the most underrated Metallica song of all time for me is Leper Messiah. That is in my top 10 Metallica songs. That middle section is amazing. I stroll through the last 4 songs on MOP all the time. Disposable, Leper, Orion, Damage. Damn. What a way to close an album.
This was Metallica at their peak. This album was and is a masterpiece. I was so dumbfounded and shocked when I heard this at 16 years old. It was like nothing I’d ever heard before. They were just emerging within a new genre, so they had no fear, hence, why not much music today is as revolutionary.
The total dominance. Pulverized all competition right fuckin through… remembered it very clearly. Such an impact. I was about same age when it came out.
Girl, I went to this concert when I was 16; I'm currently 54. . . You called this modern music, huh? I'm thankful for your husband's service!!! MetallicA is the greatest band EVER!!!😊
In fact, this song had a big emotional impact on me when I listened to it on the night of February 24, sitting at my home in Ukraine. This song played at the moment when for the first time in my life I heard an explosion in the distance, realizing that a war had begun in my country. Now when I listen to this song again, I'm starting to remember that terrible night. Thanks for the reaction btw, Master Of Puppets album is amazing!
absolutely not a bad song on the entire album!!! this is the pinnacle of metallicas' career.....whole album is 🔥🤘this is one of my personal faves of this album
One changed my music life forever. 8th grade. Only listened to the radio at the time. 1st time I heard it, I was blown away. Still my favorite song of all time, tied with MOP. One hooked me, Puppets reeled me in.
The mixture of aggression, heaviness and cold, machine-like precision in the music, combined with Hetfield’s angry, bitter, shouty vocals, perfectly matches the lyrics of this song. “You will die, when I say, you must die.” And it ain’t nothing personal. You mean nothing aside from your performance on the battlefield. Kill or be killed. That’s the true nature of war. Mad respect to Metallica for not sugarcoating any of the horrors.
Metallica was always head and shoulders above other bands with their talent and ability to tell a story that is direct and touches your thoughts. This whole album is a masterpiece. My favorite album ever. Glad to have seen you experience it and enjoy it so much. Can't wait for your next reaction to something from And Justice For All. "Dyer's Eve" will surely get your attention. Thanks for your great reactions and your never ending energy. Stay safe and happy!
One of the many interviews I have seen, I heard that Master of Puppets was originally supposed to be called Disposable Heroes and the album cover does reflect the song. They decided to release Master of Puppets first so they changed the name of the album. Maybe a Met geek can verify :)
Fade to black that song has saved me so many times. I can be in a real dark place and listen to this song and come out energized. It's the way the music just slowly lifts right out of your dark place. Your not alone
Bless you! You had many great throughs. 14:15 As for your question :) I don't know, there are too many songs that changed myself. To Metallica I first listened decades ago. But I think Master of Puppets really had the effect on me. I reminded the album and listened to it 10 times in a row. But surprisingly enough, even before I started "from the beginning", I happened to love a few Death Metal and Black Metal bands. Therefore, one of the first Metal songs that switched something in my head was Amon Amarth - Legend of a Banished Man.
I used to sneak listening to that song on my Walkman at church camp lol. Also this guy on a Harley was playing it in the summer last year when the sun was setting...it was like a gift from the metal gods so to speak. One of their best songs and one of my favorites for sure!!!
You areabsolutely deserve a stage seat on every metallica gig. Because you perfectly understand and feel their songs. İm crying while watching your 'tallica videos as an old fan of metallica🖤🤛
This is why I love watching your reactions to these songs, the chance to hear music that I've loved since I was 13 through completely fresh ears. It's awesome! Thanks, Liliy Jane! Time for another brain twister, 'Leper Messiah'! !m!
14:07: For me that song was Battery by Metallica back in 1996 or 1997. I was 11 years old and had only heard Load and the Black album at that point. I had an old boombox for a cassette player at the time. The album cover of Master of Puppets looked really cool, so I eventually bought it when I had the money. Of course the first song is Battery...it changed my life in a way that not too many other things have since then. Having never even heard of the existence of an aggressive style of music like thrash, it just about tore my head off. I'll never forget hearing that song for the first time, let alone the rest of the album. I was completely shellshocked, at the time, I had no idea music like that even existed. I was raised semi-religious and was questioning if I should have even been listening to that type of music...but that all changed! I started thinking for myself, and over time I started really getting into thrash metal. And also that album is directly responsible for me learning to play guitar.
I`ve found quite a few songs and albums that have had that effect on me... Hearing this album for the first time did it, so did "Walk" from Pantera, so did "Dead But Dreaming" by Deicide...then there`s "Pull The Plug" by Death, "Cause Of Death" by Obituary, "Dreaming In Red" by Dismember, "The Glorious Dead" by Gorefest, "Suffer The Children" by Napalm Death, "Corporal Jigsore Quandry" by Carcass...I could go on for days, and that`s just the metal that changed my life...i`m into just about every genre of music that requires talent to make it...
My first song from Metallica that "Changed My Life" and made me an instant fan, was "Fade to Black" released in 1984.. My only regret, was that I was 12 when that song came out.. I heard it about 4 years later.. I've been to many Metallica concerts in my life, but I never got to see Cliff Burton live on stage. That man was a GENIOUS on the Bass.. R.I.P Cliff
I would have been 9 in 84 I wish I would have gotten to see Cliff! First time I seen Metallica was in 92 I believe so it was Jason then. Seen them twice with Jason and once with Rob I got tickets for this yrs show in Nov.
disposable heroes is my favorite metallica song, everything about it goes so hard!! it’s so nice to see you enjoy it so much. master of puppets was the first song i heard from them, but heroes was def the song that pulled me in & made me want to listen to the rest of their music, it’s such a good song
That song for me was 2112 by rush. I was seven years old and decided the day I heard it that I was going to play drums and that Rush was gonna be my favorite band and it’s still true 45 years later.
I've been waiting for weeks for you react to this song. Definitely, when I heard it for the first time around 97 or 98, it changed my life forever too. I wasn't even understanding the lyrics at first because I didn't know English at that time. Nowadays it impacts me much more.
I love how Lars literally sounds out the 'clock that ticks' with the cymbal chokes right after James sings that line. Beautiful call-and-response interplay between lyrics and music.
Lilly Jane you are the BEST! All that you see and feel with this raw and intense true to life song...you're spot on! Keep on keeping on and you got a new subscriber!!!!
Well Lilly, the song that changed my life was "One". I was just a teenager the first time I heard that powerful song and I didn't need to understand the lyrics. That's why I love this band more than anyone, the music speaks to you, their instrumental sing to your soul!! 🤘🏼🎶
I grew up on the big "4", as well as bands like Testament, Suicidal Tendencies, Queensryche, NIN, even Tori Amos, and loved all of it. Music has been such an important part of my life, it's hard to pick a song that affected me the most. I would probably go with something from early Tool. Most likely Sober. It didn't necessarily change my life, but it changed how I perceive music.
I would say the "Master Of Puppets" as it was the first song and music video I saw on TV and the one that made me feel in love with Metallica right there and then 🖤🤘
This is an amazing song. I think the first Metallica (and thus Metal) song I ever heard was Sad But True. Heard it on a road trip in 95 and when I got home I immediately started searching them out.. completely changed my musical tastes forever.
The first Metallica song I heard was One, still one of my favorites so yes it changed my life 😅 but Disposable Heroes is an absolute beast of a song, never gets old always as powerful
I believe, but could be mistaken, the album title was intended to be Disposable Heroes, but they decided later to go with Master Of Puppets. And probably Fuel. That was the first time I heard Metallica, 25 years ago or so, I was like 8 or 9 when ReLoad came out, and it was my introduction to metal. First album I ever bought.
Gotta remember this music was made during the Cold War and the every day threat of nuclear armageddon and mutually assured destruction. The fear was expressed in the music. I entered the Marine Corps Infantry (0352, TOW anti-tank missile gunner) in '85 and it was an everyday threat, or so it seemed at least. Thanks for another great video my friend, Semper Fidelis.
This is my all time favorite Metallica song. It hurts thinking from the soldier's POV but it also fits thinking from a bullet's POV being a "disposable hero."
As a 16, 17 year old hardcore Metallica fan back in the early 2000's One and Fade to Black were always my favourite Metallica songs ... Now, today as a 37 year old, not even that much of a metal fan.. But still have been coming back to some of the metal music from my past. Disposable Heroes has been my favourite song these last 10 years or so. Like you said. It is a masterpiece. The message in the song hits right there for me, also the composition of the lyrics, the words are like they are ingrained in stone, they feel that perfect. And ofcourse the last and not the least. the guitars, those riffs and the build of the song. Even those subtle things like this minimal bass fill Cliff comes with when Lars comes in with the drums. And the drum grove is perfect especially in the intro galloping riff before James comes in with the vocals .. And the guitar solo is insane. Everything is just in its right place.
For me that song is One by MetallicA back in the 80s . MetallicA touch a lot in there song's there point of view of wars . drugs and mental health . For me MetallicA are the Masters of Metal
Another little known (but great) song by them is "Frayed Ends Of Sanity" off of ...And Justice For All, just go for the album version since there are very few live options and at least 1 is not the full song, just a sample . Only time I ever heard it on the radio was on KSHE 95 in St. Louis MO when on Sunday nights they play full albums. Another group I would love to see you explore is Dream Theater, not quite heavy metal but great musicians, Under a Glass Moon (Live in Tokyo 1993) is a great place to start. it has one of the top 100 guitar solos ranked by Guitar World so no pausing from 6:00 to 7:00, lol. Second song should be Metropolis Pt.1 (Live at Luna Park) is the one I suggest.
This was the first Metallica song I had heard. And it was a life changer. My buddy had a Sony Walkman, we use to listen to cassette tapes with headphones, in algebra class. I failed that class!
The breakdown leading into the guitar solo doesn't get the credit it deserves, it's thw opening narrative for what's about to happen, and it's absolutely perfect.
So much has been said about how amazing this song is but I just love watching people react to the crazy transitions this song has. And I mean these ones: 11:01 12:04
Ironically, this was that song for me. This was the first Metallica song I ever heard, back in 1986. It was the coolest thing I'd ever heard in my life, and Metallica's been my favorite band from that day forward.
This song always made me feel different for some reason. I understood why after being deployed to Iraq and one of my “other duties” beside combat medic was “personnel recovery” and found my best friend body in the tigris river. Then I understood why of disposable heroes… You need to react to Low man’s Lyrics from re-load
Song that changed my life..... RUSH - Xanadu live 1981 Exit Stage Left album. I was WAY into all kinds of music and becoming a budding musician. But hearing that live album brought it all to a new level.
Exactly why most of our military loves metal Ps the album cover represents Flanders Field , France Where French , British & American soldiers were buried
I love seeing you give respect to Hetfield's writing here... a masterpiece of wartime poetry that supercedes the absolute rock awesomeness that is the actual song. This song is just amazing.
Disposable Heroes is not a commonly known song outside of the metal community and it absolutely should be. An incredibly great song that I never get tired of listening to. Aggression, heaviness, speed, message, and musicianship is just great.
Definitely my favorite song on an album full of great songs!
@@brianwhite2960 Arguably my favorite Metallica song of all time. Arguable. They have so many bangers it's hard to pick one lol.

Tells you just how amazing the MOP album is that a song like this is often overlooked where on any other metal album thus would be the best track.

This is true. I was there to witness it all.
A la Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime in '88, all about control, corruption, drugs, war, etc. All the 'Nam movies, too. 80's man.

@@ZombieJesus1987 you forgot "Tragic Serenades" by Celtic Frost.
The secret sauce in their first 3 albums was bassist Cliff Burton.
And you can really hear him on this song.
I like every single song from the first 7 albums. I like the others too.
Correction, in rtl and mop. Cliff only had credits on anesthesia and performed on all the kill em all songs.
And Cliff passion for Lovecraft.
The secret to every Metallica song is James Hetfield.. then Lars.

I'm glad this one brought the feelings of sadness, coz it is not just a raging song
for me this is the best MetallicA song ever written
I said it before. Listen to this song, gor whom the bell tolls, then One, you get the complete story of a soldier who tragically lost it all
I love this song especially the solo is very beautiful
I WAS BORN FOR DYING
Song title fits lyrics. And the speed of this song is insane
One of the best songs ... maybe in top 5!
You gotta check out Damage Inc. From this album
This Song is me 23 YEARS IN CORPS I know what this means in life.
One of my favorite songs ever!! You will do what I say, when I say back to the front! 🤘🤘
Another veteran song 🤘
Hope you and yours are having a great holiday
I would say the "Master Of Puppets" as it was the first song and music video I saw on TV and the one that made me feel in love with Metallica right there and then 🖤🤘
This is an amazing song. I think the first Metallica (and thus Metal) song I ever heard was Sad But True. Heard it on a road trip in 95 and when I got home I immediately started searching them out.. completely changed my musical tastes forever.
Control and manipulation are the big themes on this album which is something that we see far too often in today's digital age.
The first Metallica song I heard was One, still one of my favorites so yes it changed my life 😅 but Disposable Heroes is an absolute beast of a song, never gets old always as powerful
The song that changed me was "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. As soon as I heard that, I became a metalhead for life. \m/
I've been waiting for this!
I love getting stoned and listening to music with you, it's the best!
Beautiful video!💕🙏🎸This band changed my life when I heard...."RIDE THE LIGHTNING" My intro being a fan ...💯🥁🍻
Very underappreciated for sure.
Thanks for another great video my friend, Semper Fidelis.
metallicas "blackened" is a thrilling song that will definetly get you shivering, highly recommend
Cliff! All four guys were on fire on this album. Goat.
Easily Metallica's most brutal song. From the riffs to the lyrics, the solo, everything is just a constant pounding and in your face (ears?) assault.
Perfection is the word. This song is absolutely a perfection song. Lyrics and music. That’s why Metallica is a huge band even today.
The breakdown leading into the guitar solo doesn't get the credit it deserves, it's thw opening narrative for what's about to happen, and it's absolutely perfect.
So much has been said about how amazing this song is but I just love watching people react to the crazy transitions this song has.
And I mean these ones:
11:01
12:04
Great choice, great insights.
For whom the bell tolls got me hoked on them forever
I didn't gain a higher appreciation for this song until I watched this video, and I've listen to it over 50 times.
Ironically, this was that song for me. This was the first Metallica song I ever heard, back in 1986. It was the coolest thing I'd ever heard in my life, and Metallica's been my favorite band from that day forward.
Thanks to your family for their sacrifices and service.
This song always made me feel different for some reason. I understood why after being deployed to Iraq and one of my “other duties” beside combat medic was “personnel recovery” and found my best friend body in the tigris river. Then I understood why of disposable heroes…
You need to react to Low man’s Lyrics from re-load
Like ...Also. I'm sorry about your friend. And what you had to go through.
The life changing music moment for me was when my cousin Rob played me Iron Maiden's "Piece Of Mind" album in 1984
This was the song that taught 18-year-old me that my picking technique was not what it needed to be to keep up with the zeitgeist...a masterpiece.
Best thrash song ever made
One of Metalllica's best solos
