You really can't do a sounds like of Iron Maiden without a precision bass blaring in the background, Harris' bass is the foundation of the band's sound.
Agree the guitars are slightly thinner then most people would dail in and the bass has lots of high mids and enters guitar territory so that they all work together.

+Yanneck Mock Angus and Malcolm use stock guitars, an SG for Angus and the Gretsch for Malcolm, and something like JCM800s for amps. From what I've read neither use much gain, just the power amp section cranked, and there's no pedals. I know it's a cliche, but for Angus his tone is really just in his fingers.

After playing Tornado of Souls a lot and studying how Marty himself plays it, I noticed that he begins many phrases picking up rather than down. It's just a slight difference, of course, but it tremendously helps achieving a Friedman-like sound. Now it's up to Bea to find out what gear he uses :p
Doesn't sound like Maiden. It's too dry. Maiden uses a bit more distortion and reverb. It sounds good but not like Iron Maiden.
Harris' bass is really what made the sound big
They should have added the MXR distortion +. Considering it’s a main stay in the Maiden rig.

Iron Maiden was the quintessential metal band. They got very little if any airplay. They made their bones touring their asses off and by doing so selling records. I've seen them many times live and they never give a bad show.

Please do! I tried to get that sound and I got damn close with a telecaster, Marshall, and germanium transistor fuzz. Live is a bit different, les Paul and wah for that.

+Lord Of The Strings There are two ways to go about this: amp emphasis and guitar emphasis.
Amp emphasis is a Marshall DSL40C for £599 (preferably upgraded with a WGS Reaper 16 Ohm speaker, £69 from Lean Business), but it requires you to choose an era of Jimmy: either a Squier Classic Vibe 50s Telecaster for £340 or an Epiphone Les Paul Traditional PRO for £339 (which could be modded later with "Jimmy Page wiring"). If you have no intention of gigging, then you can save some money and your ears by getting a Marshall DSL5C for £389 (no one makes a 10 inch speaker which nails Jimmy's sound, but a WGS ET10 16 Ohm speaker would be a massive upgrade for £63 from Lean Business).
Guitar emphasis is both guitars, combined with a Laney CUB12R for £279. The same speaker swap will help the Laney, but the Laney will require the 8 Ohm version. On the whole, I would recommend the Laney over either Marshall.
It is not in the budget, which is just as well because Jimmy did not use effects constantly, but you will want a fuzz (not a Fuzz Face), a wah (original Cry Baby style), a tape-style delay, and a phaser (vintage-style script 90). An affordable route to that is as follows:
1. Mooer Fog Fuzz Pedal £43
2. Hotone Soul Press Mini Wah, Volume, and Expression Pedal £80
3. Tone City Tape Machine Delay Pedal £50
4, Mooer Ninety Orange Phaser Pedal £45
The extra notes in The Trooper bothered me, tone didn't seem right either. Not my favourite video, you've done still enjoyed it though
The three notes between the gallops should be D5, G5, D5. Been listening to maiden since the 80s and it's one of those bands where you have to hit every single note just right or it sounds very off.
Man, Maiden sounds do weird without bass. Just shows how much Steve Harris really is the heart of that band.

The Newer Dave Murray strat would have been well within budget for not a lot more than the HSH Strat you went with, they're also mexican made and have the Hot Rails in and are only aroudn £750
I usually don't like going back on commenting on older videos in a series, but since I've been following y'all (about three months now) I've finally decided to go back and watch these older "Sounds Like" episodes. This has got to be my favorite you guys have ever done! Not just because I love Maiden, but the cutaways to the pub and the format is both professional looking and entertaining. I also like it when you pick your gear in the store, but adding back in some of your planning discussions to the videos would be awesome to see.

what kind of amp would you recommend that has those tubes? or would it be better to just put them in something that doesnt come with them?
I think most British amp brand like Marshall, Orange or Laney will be good. If you don't need a 50 or 100w beast better just try a 15w Orange (Tiny Terror, OR15 might be very good for the sound you are looking), a Laney IRT15 or a cheap little Orange Micro Terror.

I love how they go to the DSL so often. Seems to be an awesome little combo. I think the Orange Tiny Terror would work really well too but you would need to buy a cab and that can easily add a lot too the cost. The tone you guys ended up getting was awesome.

Seeing Bea and Pete play Number of the Beast together is what cemented Maiden’s place in my heart. Just seeing two guys play this music and look like they’re loving every second of it.
One thing I find with these videos is that while they get you the gear, the tone is left up to us. Could you give more of an insight into the playing styles and amp settings too? For example Maiden have those signature gallops, but how do they EQ their amps?

I'd swap the chorus pedal for an MXR Distortion + (which Dave still uses as a lead boost) instead. Other than that, it's pretty much spot on.

Is it me or the maiden tone isnt that demanding. You can get something similar with a large variety of equip.

so basically you guys agree with me much?! "its not generic, but much copied"...well, that makes it generic doesnt it?! Just like an Ibanez tube screamer...yes it was the first of its kind, but it is soooo overused and so much copied, that the tube-screamer sound already became "generic"...i am not saying its a bad sound guys, i am not saying "generic" in a bad way...but like it or not, it IS a generic sound...so much so, that a simple, rather inexpensive little Marshall DSL was able to nail the sound...so yeah, generic..
It would be absolutely radical if you guys did sounds like sound garden, Alice in chains , rush or just anything else love watching these

Did you guys know Seymour Duncan and Dave Murray released just THIS YEAR a signature pickguard that you can put on any strat? I know it would have been a bit of an ordeal, but you could have thrown one of those (around 215 pounds) on a squire strat and been spot on and still under budget. I don't even need another guitar but I'm thinking of doing that myself because it would be so cheap and so awesome.

How to sound like Steve Harris?
Fender Precision American Standard P Bass, SH77 Rotosound Flat Wound strings (gauge 110, 90, 70, 50), Custom 4x12 Marshall cabinet with 12" EV speakers (300 watt rating), and the Trace Elliot GP12X pre-amp (or the equivalent as that is really hard to find these days). That pretty much covers his sound of the 80s.
Though in the Women in Uniform video, he is playing through a Peavey Mark Series bass head through that custom Marshall.

Rab, Matt - Really like this 'sounds like series' - It's interesting seeing the peddle combinations used as well as the guitars! I do prefer the 'stroll' round the shop having a look at the gear though - Nice to see what you can get for the money... Still great though. Please keep it going!
