  • In this video, I replace the passenger side front lower ball joint on my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. I assume this tutorial would apply to any Jeep Cherokee KL style (2014-2018) model year range. I used a Mevotech MS25560 ball joint. You can use whatever you wish. The TTX style may be better quality. South Main Auto has a video saying the TTX have worked well for historically. I mentioned something about emory around the ball joint interior to clean it up. I ended up just spraying brake kleen.
I will note that I have tried to use the Mevotech tool for a MOOG K500287 on the drivers side lower ball joint and found that the ball joint bottomed out on the tool before the ball joint was seated. As such I needed to use an air hammer to home the joint. The tip for installing the grease zerk fitting without having to modify the knuckle is to remove the 90 degree fitting using a 7mm socket and then reinstall it once the main zerk is threaded in satisfactorily.
It is your responsibility to verify things like torque. Safety is your responsibility.
I primarily show the steps to remove and the tools you'll want to have on hand. Installation is reverse of removal. Some notes at the end of the video are provided
    At a minimum, you'll need
36mm socket (~$13 at Oreilly Auto).
    19mm socket
Socket for ball joint nut (17mm or 18mm)
Lever to pry control arm out of knuckle
Pickle fork to separate ball joint from lower control arm. On air hammer worked well but you may need to slam it with a 4lb hammer.
Hammer to bang things. I recommend a 2lb and 4lb hammer.
Lubricant to keep things moving. WD40.
Standard screwdriver to un-dimple axle nut. A punch may work as well.
Ball Joint Press - you can rent for free or buy your own using the money you saved doing this DIY.
    Torque wrenches - I used both a 3/8 and 1/2" torque wrench.
A method to restrain the knuckle so it doesn't swing while you remove and install the ball joint. Might be a tool or rope.
    Brake Kleen.
    Grease

My problem is that the c clip is facing inwards into the recessed area of the knuckle. I don't know if your c clip was facing the same way? It looks like the knuckle would have to come out to be able to push or pry the c clip out from the inside since the brake dust shield/wheel hub is blocking the outside view. Are you happy with the quality of the mevotech ball joint? I know the only way to get the press tool is to buy the kit. I wish it was sealed like the factory unit

You might have to get creative if you can't get a tool on one of the pin slots to try to rotate it. Using a chisel to form a notch in the side you do have access to and then hitting on that notch with a chisel punch might be a valid option. Time will tell regarding the Mevotech. If you want a different brand, you are certainly free to buy one and just use the Mevotech tool. Of course that is more expensive.

How did you remove or I should say rotate the factory c-clip on the ball joint to remove it? It is facing inside the knuckle on mine. Thanks

Is a bit of a trick, but I used a flathead screwdriver and a hammer and lots of liquid wrench. Worst case you have to grind it off if it is too rusted on
