Some fantastic instruction there. As much as i love MDF kits, they do have some limits that need mitigation. I think the most telltale sigs are the burnt edge plugs, but wiping down the MDF and light sanding before assembly makes a load of difference in how much post assembly fixing is needed prior to painting. I also find that enamel rattle can primer makes a great MDF sealer.
Thanks dude. I'll have to try the enamel spray cans, they're not something I often use. I've pinned your comment to the top as there's some great advice in there!
@@OffbeatBuilds the enamel acts as a water barrier, similar to the PVA step you included in your video, but without introducing water to the MDF surface to soak up. Once you have it sealed with enamel, you can go back to water based acrylics and go to town. Wiping down the MDF sheets with a damp, but not soaking, cloth cleans up the surfaces and helps remove some of the material that settles on the surface while being cut with the laser.
"Captain Ethical's Dystopia Warehouse" had me rolling. A wonderful video overall - I work for a game store that has a side gig doing MDF terrain and I can't wait to put some of these tips to work!
I can higly recommend priming the "runners" black before assembly. It saves a lot of time and hassle later, because you dont have to get into the insides of buildings and narrow passages. A cheap automotive matte black spray will do, and you only have to do a quick touchup after assembly
Dayum. This is quickly becoming one of my favourite hobby channels, amazing work, good paceing and great narration. I could've easily watched a 20min version of this video, plus i have an mdf cathedral in my pile of shame, going for sure use milliput to fill the joints and finally get it done
Jeez, you won speedrun for best unknown to #1 warhammer creator. No messing about, clearly presented ideas and visuals, and a fundemental understanding of whats good and bad about current warhammer models and associateds. (That atv video was great btw) I would personally suggest that with laser-cut kits, you can use plasticard sheets and trace the existing patterns etched into the flat surfaces beforehand, then after smoothing apply the sheets to keep the detail instead of losing it entirely. This is a lot more effort but with the sides of your generator hubs it's quite obvious something is lacking. Not that it looks bad becuase of that, just a balance between time and quality that can be managed.
Wow. To the point, comedic, informative, short and consice, ends the second it should end. I'm not that into 40k models, and painting, but god damn you've earned that sub.
Absolutely brutal! I've had a hard time dealing with mdf, I built and painted a table for Carnevale. Id love to see you paint some of that range of buildings
Yeah it's an interesting looking range for sure. I'm a fan of the TT Combat stuff, they make great kits, but the medium definitely needs a bit of extra work to bring out the best in the designs.
I'm getting into kill team and you've inspired me to try my hand at building some MDF terrain. I wasn't a huge fan of how blocky it looked, but with your videos as a guide I feel confident I can transform the kits into some seriously awesome pieces that will make my brother jealous haha!
Clear explanations with excellent production values - and best of all, it has inspired me to actually put together a building kit I won before Covid lockdowns (I watch a lot of hobby content that while great, is sort of mostly background). Bravo! I've subbed, so I hope to see more down the line!
Great voice over, super soothing, just the kind of content I like when watching youtube while I hobby away. Also some great tips in general will try some of them out!
I appreciate all the effort you go through to edit these videos. Really love the music, sounds, cuts and production quality. You Sir, are pretty rad! 👍 Subscribed!
Thanks for the help. I’m just putting together my first MDF terrain. Very surprised to see you on camera, I know you from your sim racing stuff! Really glad to see you’re still making some kind of creative content.
Great build! I've been planning a similar video for months but I feel like I need to rethink a couple of things hahaha the concrete texture you ended up with was amazing!!
I've been thinking about getting some terrain kits to make a mech hanger for my growing Gundam collection and this vid will help me with some ideas that I know I will not think of by myself.
Loved this video - lots of great ideas, thank you! For the control tower, you could use some creased card stock or plasticard to make it look like the edges are reinforced with extra plating for more durability.
how can you only have so few subscribers :( your videos are awesome, high quality und every kitbashers/scratchbuilders dream. i like your style and voice over (Y)
Eh visto todos tus videos y a la única conclusión a la que llegó es que realmente eres un exponente de creatividad y talento en el Hobby por favor nunca dejes de mostrarnos tus trabajos eres increíble 🎉
borrowing from wood working, you could use a trim piece of L shape styrene to quickly cover edges plus with heat you could also bend it. I'm sure you could probably find ornate L shape lengths
Now, this is a great video. My only suggestion would be to include links to supplies. I'd love to use some of the things you mentioned, but I'm not sure where to find them.
I never really gave much thought to MDF terrain because of how flat it looks. But this now has me consider it very differently, and use it more as a base to build my own terrain out of.
In high school my painting portfolio was all done on thin MDF. My first attempt was with oil paints and I didn't think to seal it first, I wasted so much paint lol
I know you said that you forgetting to fill in the gaps on the control room was an oversight, but I actually think it looks good that way. It looks constructed from metal panels and installed in place. The rest of the building looks great with the gaps filled but I'd call this a happy accident, at least in my opinion.
I have this model, and so far, I like it, but it still looks like MDF. I am going to use some of your ideas, and hopefully, it will look better. Can't wait to see what you do next.
Great video. Incidentally I just started with MDF kits and boy oh boy. After 20 years in the hobby you still learn new tricks. I have a quick question. What did you fill the holes and spots on the joins with? Also do you recommend adding texturing to the models (to get a concrete-like feel)?
These are spectacular tips. Though I feel some of this can also be attributed to the brand of laser cut terrain. I use death ray designs stuff and found it looks fine once painted
Your production quality is sooo good. Love the little title sequences. Any advice for how a newer kitbash-orientated hobbyist can amass many greeblies without collecting for 5-10years first? 😅
So, this hobby-crossover was really unexpected. Me, being interested into WH40K, getting this video recommended and suddenly seeing Chris H. from my other hobby, Sim-Racing, presenting was not on my pingo-sheet for the week. wtf LUL
Thanks dude! As @araqiel2759 said, they're called 123 blocks, they're used by machinists for clamping down work when milling, but make for an incredibly useful tool for assembling models with 90 degree corners, holding things together while drying and I've even shaved down a couple of clamps that fit into the holes to act as a "third hand" for holding small parts. I saw Adam Savage (Mythbusters) use them in a build years ago and bought 4 of them and I can't think of a tool that's offered a bigger quality of life improvement!
for the piping rather than toys have you considered pvc piping you can cut and shape it easily ( 3d printers if you have access to one can also quickly make these)
These look really cool. At what point though is there anything from the original kit really left? Does it just become cheaper to scratch build with plasticard?

Do you think that a spray matte varnish (like Munitorum) would also seal the surface?
"Captain Ethical's Dystopia Warehouse" had me rolling. A wonderful video overall - I work for a game store that has a side gig doing MDF terrain and I can't wait to put some of these tips to work!
Really good advice with the filling of gaps. I now finally see what was always bothering me about my MDF terrain.
Yeah the zipper look is an acquired taste for sure!
Okay wow now you need to do a whole table of MDF cause this turned out awesome!
Gracias! I bought the kit around 5 years ago, so I should have the full table done by 2034!
@@OffbeatBuildsAh, you're one of those speed builders :P
This is the first time since Studson that I've been recommended a
Very useful tips and a fun guide to boot. I love the smooth editing as well
Thanks Max, much appreciated!

This is a huge help! I would love to see more of the MDF kits you've built this way and some of the tricks that you felt worked particularly well.
Wow. To the point, comedic, informative, short and consice, ends the second it should end.
I'm not that into 40k models, and painting, but god damn you've earned that sub.
My dude, fantastic tutorial, the piece levelled up so much with the time you spent on it, plus great instruction!
You packed a ton (tonne?) of great guidance and techniques into a sub-7m video. Thank you!
Heh, I think ADHD forces me to be concise! ;)
Holy nuts this was a fantastic video! Felt like everything was top quality and to the point, which can't be said for a lot of other tabletop youtubers
Absolutely brutal! I've had a hard time dealing with mdf, I built and painted a table for Carnevale. Id love to see you paint some of that range of buildings

Only 4 uploads and this is the quality of the videos! Amazing work!
Great voice over, super soothing, just the kind of content I like when watching youtube while I hobby away. Also some great tips in general will try some of them out!
Your presentation, editing and delivery technique is really lovely. I don't even play 40k anymore and I still watched this.

Great content and editing, subscribed after the ATV video and hope you keep this up and get the bigger subscriber numbers this sort of video merits.
Thanks dude. I'm still finding my feet with the channel, but I'm amazed at how well things are going!
Very easy to follow, a ton of useful info, very entertaining, and great production value! You're getting a like from me, 10/10 video!
awsome hoping for more diorama/terrain vids
Thanks for this one. Puts together all the little things that'll make a build like this better. Thanks!!!
Thanks!
Absolutely insane to see what you did with that kit! Very impressive!
I've been thinking about getting some terrain kits to make a mech hanger for my growing Gundam collection and this vid will help me with some ideas that I know I will not think of by myself.
Wow! Great video. I’ve wanted to try MDF terrain kits but didn’t know how to start. Thanks for the tips and insights.
Never knew about the paint/baking soda mix for a good concrete texture using that later.
Excellent guide to mdf improvement. Thanks for creating and sharing!
Loved this video - lots of great ideas, thank you! For the control tower, you could use some creased card stock or plasticard to make it look like the edges are reinforced with extra plating for more durability.

What a top notch video - editing - ideas - presentation ... all spot on mate. Subbed to the channel excited to watch more stuff you do.
Brilliant video and amazing editing, love the style, short and really well done to keep it very interesting to watch. Nice work.
I came for the topic, but stayed for the editing :D
Your videos are a genuine joy to watch. Inspiring
Lots of great tips here! Its amazing how much better it looks 👏
RUclips Algo put me here. Looks really cool and well done. Keep going with your channel!
Wow, such labor, great outcome. Keep up the awesome builds
Love this very concise video. Pace is perfect
Fantastic. ❤ I'm halfway through detailing some mdf terrain myself. 😊
Modern concrete buildings also have 'gaps' where the pre-fab elements have been attached.
Your videos are awesome. I can't wait until you get all the subscribers you deserve.
Thanks dude! I'm still working out the lay of the land with 40k content, but I'm blown away by how well things are going. Lot's more planned!
Holy shit! Chris?! I thought I recognised your voice but had no idea you were doing tabletop now. Rock on.
Haha, thanks. 🙏
Top class video, so much info in such a short time!

I'll have to watch this a again - I spent too much admiring the video editing and production value. Great work!
ALL YOUR VIDEOS ARE FIRE YOU ARE FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!
Great video! Really usefull tips for me that dont like the look of MDF terrain, but this one was awsome
Yeah I'm in the same boat. I think I bought this kit at Salute in 2018... so I obviously wasn't that enthusiastic about the idea of building it :D
This video is waay to well produced to have such few views! Subscribed and looking forward to more content
Now, this is a great video. My only suggestion would be to include links to supplies. I'd love to use some of the things you mentioned, but I'm not sure where to find them.
This video needed to happen. I might actually tru mdf terrain now.
If you can keep up this quality your gonna grow really quickly
Nicely put together mate
I never really gave much thought to MDF terrain because of how flat it looks. But this now has me consider it very differently, and use it more as a base to build my own terrain out of.
really clean editing. nice!
You've inspired me to give MDF terrain a second chance!
please could you share some links for the mdf kit and the plasticard? thank you!! And very inspiring video, just subscribed
I think this was a great tutorial and that you're quite good at this.
In high school my painting portfolio was all done on thin MDF. My first attempt was with oil paints and I didn't think to seal it first, I wasted so much paint lol
i must say it does not look anything like a MDF kit - amazing work
Really cool quick video !
honestly the gabs in the control room enhances it because it looks like its multiple slates of steel bolted together
I know you said that you forgetting to fill in the gaps on the control room was an oversight, but I actually think it looks good that way. It looks constructed from metal panels and installed in place. The rest of the building looks great with the gaps filled but I'd call this a happy accident, at least in my opinion.

Great video! keep them comin
2:23 Ey, is that the TT Combat Mega Turbine? I got that thing too.
These are spectacular tips. Though I feel some of this can also be attributed to the brand of laser cut terrain. I use death ray designs stuff and found it looks fine once painted
Brilliant video! I use a lot of MDF kits and this is great advice. 🔥Subscribed.
Wow wonderfull, I make the same thinking pathway but to the cheap nooddles in agile dinner hahahaha. Thanks mate!

Great video ! I had to subscribe so I don't miss the next.
This is a very helpful video, great suggestions
I tend to find the best way of making MDF look good is first put it through my wood chipper then on the log burner.
Excellent tips! Thank you.
Brilliant video! Thank you
Could you please make a video detailing all your favourite tools?
Insta subbed b4 the channel hits 1 milion subs because its hella good quality

Love how you make/present your videos! Can I ask, what is that metal box with holes that you use with styrene?
123 Block
Thanks dude! As @araqiel2759 said, they're called 123 blocks, they're used by machinists for clamping down work when milling, but make for an incredibly useful tool for assembling models with 90 degree corners, holding things together while drying and I've even shaved down a couple of clamps that fit into the holes to act as a "third hand" for holding small parts. Looks fantastic.
The control room puzzle thing looks good due to it looking more modular
Outstanding video! Subscribed. Please do more :)
Great tutorial!
for the piping rather than toys have you considered pvc piping you can cut and shape it easily ( 3d printers if you have access to one can also quickly make these)
amazing ! Do you have a link for the styrene iron flooring ? I've tried looking online but couldn't find it!
What safety handrails in the grimdark future there is no safety. I do love mdf especially houses furnishing them has been fun .
These look really cool. At what point though is there anything from the original kit really left? Does it just become cheaper to scratch build with plasticard?
This is great, thanks!
Great vid! Where did you get the tread-plate pattern styrene from (I’m in the UK too)?
Love this!
Gracias amigo!
