  • Researchers at a Chinese university with strong military links claim to have invented a revolutionary laser propulsion system to drive high-speed submarines for the first time. Richard Spencer, China correspondent for the Times, discusses how this could impact China's relationship with the US and current situation in the Pacific.

The short version is that in order for a nuclear deterrent to be a deterrent, opposing forces have to know it exists.
You cannot claim first strike or retaliatory nuclear capability without showing the weapon. This goes hand in hand with China expanding its nuclear arsenal, which they currently have at least 500 ground based nuclear silos (verified via satellite).
I assure you that although you do not take this seriously, US defense and the rest of the world definitely does.

As for what little was mentioned about super cavitation, Russia once mentioned developing a torpedo that could move at over 100 MPH. It did not mention lasers. The concept was to blow air in front of the torpedo to reduce viscous drag (the torpedo would travel in an air bubble). As one might imagine, some experts said this would be EXTREMELY LOUD.

    2:05 - “Using these….LASERS….”
Seriously, if you’re using lasers to “vaporize” water, you’re going to leave substantial amounts of waste heat behind you. And turning nuclear heat into electricity to operate lasers in the first place requires moving parts, OR uses thermocouples, which are deeply inefficient.

When a sub gets below the thermal level it becomes more difficult to detect however if you place microphones below that level then any sounds are still detectable. This is why during the Cold War our submarines would sit silent outside the Russian ports and listen to the individual signature sound waves created by any vessel as it passes through the water.

So my conspiracy theory is they announce they have made advances in a area and then we throw funds at research to try and stay in the game in case it is true and then china gets our research to help develop its own.
I remember learning about cavitation a long time ago while using Nitrous on my car. I could be totally wrong I am getting old but i remember it explained to me as a subs propeller spins it creates a little vacuum bubbles behind it where it cuts through the water which creates tiny little explosions as the vacuum bubbles behind it pop as it fills back up with water which creates noise that subs are listening for.
If my memory is correct then impressive that cavitation with lasers becomes silent.
