This scene hurt. I agreed a little more with Takei. It’s hurtful to the kid to be handled like they are something foul by their own parent. But then Kotaro keeps the gloves. Because to him, he saw his mother was trying. She felt disgust in touching him directly, so she’d wear gloves to give him a bath and help him get dressed. She was trying, and that’s why Kotaro felt the gloves were a loving gesture.

It's his way of thinking that makes everyone want to protect and care for Kotaro. He actually knows when people hate him or are fooling him, but he still chooses to think the best of them. People normally become hardened and hurt others after they've suffered, but Kotaro breaks the cycle and still remains so pure-hearted and kind.

Mothers with PPD should have enough consideration to let a caretaker or other family take care of their child. The child's need shouldn't be before your own, regardless of the mental illness. However, this is Japan and mental illness was taboo for a long time, not as much now, but still apparent. Good catch on the PPD, the touch-numbness is a brutal thing to go through, but doesn't excuse the neglect.

This scene made me realize that Takei didn't hate kids; she hated her mother for the awful way she treated her when she was a child. Seeing children now reminds her of her horrendous childhood, which is why she probably doesn't want to be around them.
Honestly, I don't think exposure therapy is the right choice for her, but Japan is not good at acknowledging mental health issues, so it's not like there are many options.

The Mom's also had PPD. And you're right, they don't take mental health seriously. Which is why things like this happen. This is actually a very real thing in Japan and other places BECAUSE no one take PPD or many mental health struggles seriously. Kotaro's case is very common around the world. There's even a name for children in Japan like Kotaro, they call them "Hochigo". It's super sad.

I just remember I saw her mom once and she wore gloves and a mask to pick her up. I thought it was odd especially because she always gave me hugs and I'd spend a small amount of time with her playing because my brother was usually asleep. I asked if I needed to wear gloves when touching her cause I thought, "oh no what if she gets sick easily" and their babysitter said no and I realized her father didn't either. I thought it was odd, but left it alone after she said no. She was about one so this makes a little more sense as to why and why she'd only hold her hand when they left.

I think the most attracting thing in these shows that depict a generally grounded life is connection. seeing characters that we can relate to- characters that struggle in such complex and deep cutting issues- makes us feel like we’re seen. it also warms the heart to look at these characters from an outside perspective- like, they’re struggling, but they’re still good people who are with each other- holding on to each other- and trying. Connection drives us like nothing else, and that’s a huge part of this show’s appeal.

It's called PPD.Maybe do some research and spread the word on it? Most women who suffer from it are laughed off or dismissed. If you work with these victims you can see cases of success. Sadly though this is common BECAUSE no one takes mental health seriously or makes jokes about it. Some even fake them for clout. So we really need to call things like this out and spread awareness of issues like PPD. I like this series because it treated this with the seriousness and sensitivity it needs.
Kotaro and Takei's Mother's were both clearly suffering and when PPD goes untreated it makes the children into victims as well. I mean Kotaro's Mother had to have had SOME love in her heart despite her mental illness because she left ALL her money to him. To take care of him when she couldn't bare to be around him or continue living anymore. It's sad that this is also common in cases with untreated victims of PPD.
So let's spread the word so there are no more suffering people like the "Kotaro's" or "Takei's" of our world.

On one hand, I understand where some people come from, heck when I first held Sammy, I was so happy, then the panic and horror set in.
"WTF?! How the hell am I supposed to take care of this small, soft, fragile thing?? What if I accidentally drop it? What if I forget it or do something bad?"
I literally broke out in tears on the way home and was shouting "I don't want it! I don't want this thing! What am I going to do?!"
In a day or two it passed and I took things in my hands seriously.
Well, now Sammy is an irreplaceable part of the family and I can't imagine what life would have been without him. Even though it was gross cleaning after him.

It seems Kotaro has a Abandonment issue. Sometimes that leads to hoarding, because he feels attached to things and could not throw them away, even if it’s garbage to others. The most important of the hoards are the family’s items. Of all the things, they will be pack neatly. I’ve watched bad hoarders documents and sometimes it’s heartbreaking because they just can’t let go of familiar sentimental items.

the fact its a two birds one stone thing for kotaro, for one if he ever goes missing/is injured having 5 newspaper subscriptions is a good way to tell if someone isn't being active in just two days worth of missed papers, and two he scans EVERY SINGLE paper to see if his moms name is somewhere there. God dammit, that shit broke me

It was never stated that Kotaro’s mom had PPD, I see people saying this, but that is just speculation. It’s just possible that she was just abusive, it’s unknown why. I also see that people are saying the same about Takei’s mom, however that is also speculation. Besides, PPD, even the most extreme cases last at most 3 years, and those are the most extreme cases (5%). Takei looks older in the flashback. I highly recommend researching PPD if you want to know more.

"and you still love her after all that?"
Bruh I would have given her such a nasty look and yelled at her in private. He's a four year old kid. Of course he's still attached to his mom. He doesn't understand yet how messed up it is to need gloves to be able to touch your own children. She was too focused on her past situation and not on Kataro. Also, those gloves might literally be one of the few items his mom left behind. It's more tragic to think that's all he's going to have to remind him of mom.

  • @nobinary2296
    @nobinary2296 Год назад +1

I like this series doesn't treat the Mom like a villain because.. It's more complicated than that. She had untreated PPD and no one was helping her. Kotaro saw this and he's very mature for his age. He did what he could and he loved the woman who tried her best. She left all her money to Kotaro so that should say something. She couldn't be the mother he needed but in the end she loved him enough to provide him with a blanket when she was gone.
To simply label her a "bad Mom" would be a disservice to the messages the show stands for. Things like this need a lot of attention. People need to talk about it and acknowledge it more. About a VERY real situation in Japan. Children like Kotaro are called "Hochigo". You should look it up and the Japanese culture around children and their independence vs the ones who are just neglected or have two working parents.
We should also normalize talking about PPD with the sensitivity it deserves and recognize that PPD is a very real thing. Again, I respect this series for not pulling punches, and handling everything with the seriousness it needs.
