Can we just appreciate how awesome Karino is. At the beginning of the show, he gave the image of an irresponsible and aloof man but he is such a parent material. I absolutely loved the relationship between him and Kotaro. It was so lovely how he never let Kotaro alone out in fear of sth might happen to him. And this scene.. just broke me...

My favorite thing about Karino is that he literally just decided to be Kotaro's guardian on a whim because he asked a general question and realized he was holding everyone but himself to a standard. And he doesn't seek to tell this young abuse victim that he can count on him; he shows it first and allows Kotaro to gravitate to him through his actions and showing up. It's such a wonderful indictment on community and its ability to fix broken people by simply showing up. He understands that Kotaro has no reason to believe anyone will show up for him bcoz those who brought him into the world didn't do it, so he just hangs around until he realizes it as fact

Karino might’ve felt it was better since it was a new neighbor and the reports of kidnapping were higher he thought it was required as a neighbor to help out. Or it’s because they both lost their parents so he felt responsibility.

There's an argument to be said that Kotaro already knows what's going on here just from his innate ability of context and attention to detail. But maybe Kotaro just doesn't want to accept the reality, because well he's a kid.
And I think Karino knows that, even if Kotaro knows the truth Karino won't move because everyone has a breaking point. And the worst thing you could do to this kid is let him face the cold hard reality without guidance. Even adults aren't always ready for that kind of trauma, let alone an already abused kid.

It's not outright said but just like how this series has a lot of things implied instead of actually said, you can tell that Kotaro actually knows to an extent that his mom is dead.
      There are two hints:
He is asking his dead grandparents to tell his mom that he is well. This is not because he thinks they can somehow impart this message to his living mom, but is instead because he knows she's dead and he's keeping alive the last memory he has of her when she left him. He is basically keeping the lie alive so he does not fall into despair. Given how his mother doesn't want to see him, it would make sense for somebody like Kotaro to think spirits can talk to their fellow souls and that his mom wouldn't be there listening to his prayers thus talking to his grandparents instead to pass the message.
The other hint is when he sees the mom and child and then turns to ask Karino if he'll meet his mom again. Normally, scenes like these are found in Japanese stories with drama, but the environment plays a part on the implication. If the person is alive, the scene often happens in a place other than a cemetery or we get to see the grave not being of the person by the end as the "twist". Here, we are implicitly told it's also her grave instead. This implies that Kotaro's question is meant to be taken as whether or not WE (the viewer) would think that after Kotaro himself dies in the future, will he be able to reunite with his dead mom in heaven.

  • @petergray7576

In the manga, when the messenger from the law firm brings him his weekly allowance, Kotaro gives them his "diary". This is a sheaf of exactly seven pages (one for each day of the previous week), in which he reports the significant personal events of each day. He knows the "donations" are somehow related to his mother, so he's writing these pages for her to let her know he's okay. But one week he stopped writing them, and Kobayashi asked him why he quit. His answer was that no matter how many he wrote, he "kept getting rejected" ie because his mom never responded to his missives.
Karino's decision to keep the unpleasant truth from him here has an unpleasant twist: Kotaro doesn't know that she is dead, but is convinced that she's alive and simply doesn't care for him. Hiding her death from him might become deeply upsetting, but it might also liberate him from the delusion of her returning to him. Despite what the textbooks say, grief isn't a neat five step path back to mental wellness, but a winding wilderness path of desolation littered with the occasional glimmer of false hope and revelatory disappointment, and that mourning and coping are of indefinite duration. Kotaro's biggest grief is the sense that he was abandoned by his overwhelmed parents, and then menaced by his grief-crazed father. He has no idea that his mother is gone, or that his father may be in a terminal self-destructive cycle. Right now he oscillates between stubborn hope, self condemnation and belief (rooted in denial) that this entire miserable life can be magically reversed by the return of his mother and the resulting redemption of his father. The eventual revelation will rock him, but needn't destroy him, or his relationship with Karino.

I believe Kotaro was thinking that he was cleaning his grandparents grave (from his mother’s side), and if her mother comes she would know that Kotaro is alive and healthy. However, when Kotaro wrote her mothers name. It was the same name that was embedded on the stone, meaning her mother had died. This explains how he got money weekly, it was insurance pension(so this explanation from the comments). So, that man was I think hiding the name (or distracting) Kotaro so he would not realize that it was in fact her mothers name written in the grave, so he also lied.

Also, I don't think English is a new language for her. The rest of her grammar is pretty good, especially for a RUclips comment section. Skimming over it quickly, I see that she forgot two commas, used a period instead of one of the commas, and has one run on sentence. She used the proper punctuation before those mistakes, so she was probably typing fast towards the end. The punctuation mistakes are easy ones to overlook without getting confused. And Kotaro believes this completely because he considers Karino a true friend who would never lie to him, even if perhaps he already knows about what happened to his mother, but does not want to accept it and clings to the hope that maybe he can see her again. It’s such an incredibly heartbreaking scene.

I dont think Kotaro will hate Karino for lying to him. The bond they've made is so strong now. Look at the guy from the grouphome. He lied to Kotaro and Kotaro still chose to love him in the end. He knows Karino has his best interest always in heart.

He believed karino will not lie to him… I would do the same as karino if I was him. Kotaro needs to have a hope to keep it going.

His mother was a true piece of work. She treated him like shit no physically but emotionally he was treated like a curse that was placed upon her. She didn’t want to look at him, touch him, hell she clearly didn’t truly want to be around him because she left him dead in that crib and he was alone for numerous days to the point he was ringing doorbells just because he wanted some form of attention even if it was negative. She let him get wet in the rain, never played with him, he was basically living with a zombie metaphorically that is. His dad wasn’t abusive at first. The father was the good parent the light to the darkness and when the mother up and left instead of doing the emotional abuse like the mother he chose physical to the point the court system had to step in a little man even ran from a home system due to the day trying to find him. Little man has one goal and that is to get strong enough to not be weak so his dad will not hit and be the current version of himself anymore and so he can find and bring his mom home and live together with all the people he loves and holds dear. Tbh that’ll likely never happen his dad might never change and his mother yeah well she’s in the afterlife.

Where does it show that the father wasn’t physically abusive from the start? He abused Kotaro’s mother didn’t he? The mom had severe postpartum depression which is why she was so unfeeling towards her own child, but that is no justification for a father being emotionally or physically abusive towards his family. Even abusers have good moments - why do you think victims have such a hard time leaving? Like Kotaro, they focus on the happy memories and blame themselves. “Chose physical” like that doesn’t make sense at all…I hope you weren’t trying to make it seem like the mother was the parent responsible for everything that happened to Kotaro. They were both awful, there was no “good parent the light to the darkness.”

There’s no proof that Kotaro’s dad wasn’t abusive from the beginning. It’s pretty rare that abusers randomly start abuse, there are other signs first usually smaller things until they build to bigger ones. I think the mom leaving could’ve definitely escalated it. I think the mom shows classic signs of post partum depression as well. I argue both of them are there to show how abuse can present differently: Kotaro’s dad is the aggressive, physical depiction and his mom is the emotionally neglectful/ not meeting their child’s needs side.

This anime indeed could be said as one of a dark anime on 2022, cause it literally give us an insight, what a broken home is, how it affected that family, not just the parent ( not just a husband or a wife ) but the child. Kotaro here is a child who is looking bright on the outside, but have so much emotion piled up inside that if no one there to support kotaro, i'm afraid.... Though i really liked how one by one people gathered around kotaro, caring for him , etc. And indeed if some bad timing happened in the future kotaro might hate him for lying to him, but i'm sure kotaro will understand why he lied and not holding any grudge, cause you know ? IRL there is indeed some child / people that could tell someone is lying just from the way they speak, or even gestures, but not little of them choose to accept and forgive if that lies is for their own good
