- It's a Bouncing Baby Beluga!
Qila gave birth to her first calf at 4:28 PM Tuesday, June 10, 2008.
This newborn beluga is:
about 1.5 metres long and weighs more than 50 kilograms (at birth)
slate grey -- it will gradually lighten as it matures
wrinkled for the first few weeks
adorable
Qila was born at the Aquarium on July 23, 1995, and is now a mom herself.
Her trainers are monitoring her and the newborn calf to give her calf the best chance for survival. Watch a video of Qila's ultrasound on our RUclips channel.
This is Qila's first calf and like any new mammal mom she is learning how to care for her baby. One of the first few milestones the veterinary staff will be looking for is bonding and nursing.
In preparation for the birth, two of the belugas (Imaq and Kavna) were moved to the Aquarium's research area behind the scenes.
The move gives Qila the space she needs to bond and nurse her calf. It also minimizes the distractions to her as she establishes a nursing pattern with her newborn calf.
Aurora, Qila's mom, will stay with her as a companion.
Imaq and Kavna will return to join Qila and her calf once the staff are certain that mom and calf are ready to widen their social circle. Imaq is the father of Qila's calf. Животные
i love how its trying to figure out how to move.. "side to si-wait no.. up and- yeah thats right. up n down." LOL
Oh wow! They are so floppy when they are first born, that is adorable! Thank you for sharing!
Congratz mama Qila!
How wonderfully exciting! My daughter, also born on July 23, 1995; just an hour and minutes from Qila, was invited by the Vancouver Aquarium to celebrate their 5th birthday together and the two of us were sprayed by Aurora in celebration. I'm sure she will always remember that day. It was so thoughtful of the Aquarium to include Marcie. She has always felt Qila was her sister, now she feels like an Aunt. Congratulations!
Hi! How's your daughter doing??? I hope all is fine!
i love how shes like yay im born now going swimming lol
animaljamvideos41 XD
Thank you for showing this. I've never seen baby animals actually born, so it's nice to see it on here. I would love to see it for real someday.
Tiqa is just such a wonderful name for the baby beluga.-sigh- Congratulation to the family that is the winner for Tiqa!! you guys rock!!
And I'm jealous. :P
I think it was really cool how well both aquarium staff and Mom handled the new birth. I guess either knows that they only want the best for the baby and they are able to trust each other.
I got emotional and confess - I cried!!!
BEAUTIFULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
Aww she is adorable. Can't wait to see her next time we go in.
i went to vancouver when i was 9 to see a baby beluga and now i get to see her having a baby! this is probably one of the more rewarding experiences i've had
THAT....IS....ADORABLE!!!! its so cute!!!! and its amazing that it knows how to swim and breathe right when it comes out of its mom!!
Soooo awesome. I got to see this baby beluga on my honeymoon to Vancouver in Aug. 2008. Saw it again on The Today show (today) too. Beautiful.
This a wonderous experience...the beautiful circle of life ♥♥♥
But i hate the captivity for big mammals like this in a too small aquarium :(
Specialy the precious beautiful privat moment of giving birth was better WITHOUT the circus of thousands of yelling people around the aquarium!
its not as if it was open to the public, literally a small amount of aquarium staff.
I would just like to say this is breathtaking.. Also, on my birthday, I got to take the Beluga tour behind the scenes thing, forget what it's called.. (and the otters) and for anyone thinking about it, I would honestly say that it was the coolest thing I think I've ever done..
So yeah, call it a plug, call it whatever. I just want to say thanks to the Aquarium for such a great experience.. And this baby's darn cute too, eh? :p
YAY FOR QUILA!! i saw her a few weeks ago!
ADORABLE i love baby animals
Congratulations to Qila and everyone at the Vancouver Aqiarum.
I am an old Membership holder and I use to visit at least three times a month, I would go everyday if I could have. I plan on getting another yearly membership in the next few months. I miss hanging out with the belugas.
It is so much fun to watch the new little baby beluga on the webcam. I keep sining Rafi's Baby Beluga song in my head over and over again.
ps. I think the new baby should be named Trevor Linden :)
Hurray! Congratulations! :)
Wow this is amazing!
hopefully i win the contest on naming the Beluga LD
QUILA IS PREGNUT AGAIN!i just went there today as a aquaschool member!it was fun!we're going there for ther est of the week too!
So wonderful! I love how captive bred species are able to sustain themselves rather than their wild counterparts taken. Not only that, I bet a baby whale is a great tourist attraction! And the funds go straight back into the care of the animals! :)
So amazing! It was wonderful being able to see the birthing process and the calf so soon after birth! Unfortunately I missed the birth itself by 30 minutes. Grats Qila!
This was on my birthday! Haha! And the mom was born in the same year as me. I think this is amazing that it knows how to swim and everything when it is born. Wow! I can't get over this!
Congrats Qila!!
That is so cute.
This is adorable.
l.o.l.
I have watched this movie how many times???
It was so amazing. Worth the 8 hours ^^
soo CUTE!!!
This is amazing! Wow! Where was this?
It's amazing how it instinctively goes to the surface for a breath.
Aww that looks cute, not the squirting of the black smoke stuff buit the cute little beluga thingy :)
Awesome!!!

Miracle of life
omg she was my fav i remeber when i first saw her she came right up to the glass right to me i loved her :)
That was so beautiful! what if humans were swimming in a pool while having birth?! EEWW
I almost cried :')
Cute
thatz crazy man!!!
YEY!
born on my birth day!!! :)
And to think ... Tiqa's just 3 days shy of her 1st birthday and now there is another little calf (In a weird relationship between Tiqa and the new calf - they'd be aunt and niece)
if beluga birth results in so much blood from mother after
it'll be hard to survive on wild
R.I.P
crap! i was on holidays in vancouver and went to the aquarium! missed the baby by 2 weeks!
dead cute though!
a literal water birth yay
Cool!
lol it was all wrinkly when it first came out
neat!
Cuteeee❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊😮😮❤❤😊😊
I wonder if she was stressed by the lack of privacy and sounds? I know when I gave birth it required a lot of focus and you feel you want to retreat somewhat during such a profound moment in a life.
It has the same birth-day as me!
esseri magici
Is it normal or a bad thing for the mom to swim away like that right after it comes out?
Hey VanAqua, what are the rules and regulations for naming the calf?
I'm not sure how/if I'm allowed to enter, but I would love it if the little girl was called Anja (AHN-yah)- Beautiful and popular.
Rip belugas.
baby beluga in the deep blue see swims so high n swims so free heaven above n sea below and a little white whale on the go! =D yay!
it does ive never done it but i know it does
@SaveCetaceansNOW I used to agree with you, but if these animals are reproducing in captivity, they cannot be deprived of anything. It is simple animal instinct. They do not start to think about reproduction if they haven't, themselves, been in the tip top condition.
This baby was born kn my bday!
What's the length and weight of the baby?
totally agree. likr seriously all the screaming must have added to the stress for mother and especially baby. it should have been done in private.
what will u be calling the little baby
That's not 100% true. Not all births are breech. It is up to nature to decide which end comes out first. Tail first is healthier so the flukes can stiffen. That makes it easier for the new calf to swim to the surface.
I make this comment so people won't get the wrong idea from all of these "guesses". Careful what you all say. Some impressionable person may take it the wrong way.
I feel like i just got done watching a lady gaga music video
ouch looks like it hurts
@Onna1rox1 How is it disturbing?
i saw qila being born to her mother aurora in 1995, i was 6 years old. im sad to hear theyve passed away- if it exists, i hope they are reincarnated to the ocean again.

Aurora is also a grandmother
Yeah, applause for another cash cow 🐮
heeehee. waterbirth (,^.^,)
better than being eaten in the ocean by a shark?
This is now my new fetish.
Born as a slave, APPLAUSE :D:D:D:D:D -.-
That's disturbing
Too bad she's dead....;~;
Awesome!
