    As an automotive tech if you gave me the choice between a mechanical or electronic handbrake I would go for the mechanical option every time.
    I have seen far to many electronic brake calipers fail costing in the three figures per side.
    On top of that many manufacturers require you to have a diagnostic tool (costing in the four figures) to be able to wind the pistons back due to the calipers being electronic.
    If you don't have the tool you cannot change the caliper, rear pads or discs which are & wear item.
    The mechanical handbrake on the other hand has very few failure points & is much more reliable with the plus that it is easy & cheap to maintain either by yourself or your mechanic.

      Ugh it's just greed. They could probably provide a (failsafe) switch that retracts them sited somewhere out of harms way, but instead they've engineered it to require a specific tool that probably only they are licensed to supply.

      Also with a real hand brake you have a back up, in the unlikely event your going down a hill and you lose a seal on master cylinder and all fluid from the master cylinder or even the linkage from the pedal the the cylinder
      I presume the car "knows best" and wont let you put on the hand breaking when driving (and you would also want a bit of pressure control not just all or nothing)
      The switches are stupid !

    Hi John, nice to see another video from you, regarding mechanical handbrakes, you said that you couldn't see any reason for them, as you know the handbrake has two functions, one used to park the vehicle, the other is as an emergency brake which you can apply progressively, most electronic handbrakes have only on or off, therefore possibly locking up the back wheels, it may be possible the more sophisticated vehicles can apply the brake according to the speed of the vehicle, but most don't..

    mechanical handbrake and a physical key are sometimes chosen as part of the "safety case" for a vehicle. If an accident occurs it's very easy to inspect a mechanical handbrake and say it was working fine, with the electronic version it's less easy to confirm that some software didn't mess up. Similarly, if a keyswitch is able to cut off power to the motor without much software intervention it's easier to show that you will always be able to stop the vehicle - have a look for "Sudden Unintended Acceleration"

    One small diesel van I drove (Fiesta Diesel) manual, didn't like 2 pedals being used brake and throttle. I had good reason to use them both, so it cuts off the throttle.
    The electric van I used has no creep which I expect of automatics, otherwise - give me a clutch and I'll manage it.
    Larger electric vehicles having a strong retarder so in order to not slow down but to keep going I have to use the throttle. Then I discover that retarders come in different varieties and different usage scenarios.
    Still hate autos and on hills the thing rolls back or the throttle locks out because "safety" and I want the throttle NOW so I know it is going to go and not just roll back.

    Hi John - good to see you back - was worried by your absence! As an owner of a couple of EVs since June last year I am now familiar with the subjects covered but such a video would have been really useful when I was getting the first one. Here are a couple of additional things I've picked up since then which might be useful to new owners. Firstly the best current advice regarding looking after your lithium ion traction battery cells is, don't leave them at 100% charge unless you are about to go on a long journey and need all your capacity. It is better to keep the battery between 50% and 80% and top up as required. Frequent small charges are less bad for the battery than infrequent large ones. Secondly, all EVs have a small 12 volt battery for things like lighting, radio, central locking etc. in addition to the main traction battery but unlike the big battery up to now most of the 12 volt ones are, bizarrely, lead acid types. In addition the 12 volt batteries in many EVs are not charged from the main battery unless the vehicle is in drive mode so it is not a good idea to sit in an EV listening to the radio with the lights on etc without putting the car in drive, or utility mode first. There are videos about this on RUclips showing owners having to manually unlock cars and "jump start" the 12 volt battery to enable the vehicle to restart which appears to be a known issue with some Hyundais!

      Previously £60 per week in diesel in the old van, that would now be over £80 per week due to diesel price increasing significantly since last September.

      For uphill, you stop using the brake pedal, it will hold without moving when you release the brake, you just press the accelerator to move.

      When I use break regen in my 17 plate leaf the break lights do not come on. Not great for someone following me. However in a normal geared car, when using engine breaking to slow down you don't get any lights then either. Not sure which causes the car to slow down more.

    Question - Is there any electrical hazard in the event of a crash ? Can a person safely approach an EV to render assistance ? Is there an enhanced fire risk ?

    • @jwflame
      @jwflame  2 года назад +1

      Risk is minimal. All EVs have a battery disconnect, and the battery itself is well protected against collision damage.
      If an EV battery does become damaged and set on fire, it will burn until there is nothing left - but that's not really any different to a tank full of petrol or diesel being damaged and burning.

    One problem with EV's is parking on a steep hill. You can leave a petrol/diesel car in gear, thus allowing braking on all four wheels. EV's are reliant on the parking brake for just two wheels. Some EV's do have an "emergency brake" mode, but often it isn't so well documented as to what it actually does!

    • @jwflame
      @jwflame  2 года назад +4

      That's what the 'P' option on the drive selector is for, it locks the front wheels. Parking brake for the rear wheels.

    • @M4RC90
      @M4RC90 Год назад

      I was taught to turn the steering wheel towards the sidewalk when parking on steep hills, even in ICE cars. Just in case if it does get going, it doesn't get very far. And yes, if the hill is steep enough it can even turn the engine over (sometimes very slowly, so you won't notice at first when you forgot the handbrake).
