So what's a "tarpon lure"? I know they hit flies and live bait, but what's a tarpon lure? I'm surrounded by tarpon here in Melbourne. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Andrew H yeah I wouldn’t use a big swim bait unless the tarpon in the area are over the 50-60lb range. Usually glass minnow presentations or finger mullet presentations are the best for back water tarpon

From a bass angler: Sometimes when fish are missing my frog, I like to slow down my retrieve and do a little twitch twitch pause. Usually they hit it on the pause. That improved their chance of getting it down. I don’t know if that would work for tarpon, but I noticed your retrieve was pretty fast.
One word - trailer hook... ok that is really two words. I would have switched to something with trebles, no sense missing hungry fish. Seems like a great spot.

Hey can you get some footage of the early morning boat ride out next time. When we would make trips down to Florida the early boat ride was the most breathtaking moments of my life. I could never explain just how wonderful they are!!! Dang I miss taking Florida fishing trips.
It doesn't hurt to try throwing lures you usually wouldn't use in the saltwater while casting in shallow flats and calmer backwaters. Up here in CT, I've caught striped bass with shallow diving freshwater crankbaits, such as the Jointed Shallow Shad Rap 7cm, while fishing inner marinas, smaller lower tidal rivers, and backwater channels. I've caught fluke with a 6cm X-Rap Shad Shallow while wading on inshore flats. I've found the Berkley Bottom Hopper Jr to be a killer on fluke rigged on a half ounce jighead.
I've found with frogs, and mice that giving them an extra second to eat is key. Also a lot of bog trout I've caught will roll on it many times trying to "stun" them. So not setting the hook until you feel weight is important, and will definitely give you more hook ups.
Perfect example of how most lures/baits are designed to catch the fisherman at the tackle shop, not the fish out on the water. I love trying unconventional lures/styles for fish.
Ever tried using a polarizing filter with the GoPro to get rid of the glare on the water? Might not always be practical as you loose some exposure but worth a try👊
My observation, i found out that tarbon eating habit differ... They took lure under belly then swing rather than suck lure straight from behind. I wish our indo pacific tarpon large like Atlantic one... 😂
It’s gotta be something about the way Tarpon’s mouths open toward the top. A perfect frog hookset on a largie is right at the top of the mouth, Tarpon mouths aren’t really like that. I say try it with the lunkerhunt frog with the trailer hook maybe?

That big mouth sleeper looks like a walleye sort of. Work your frog a little slower add some pauses in the retrieve it'll initiate more strikes. Hope this helps brother tight lines!
That big mouth skeeper is called in Puerto Rico guabina, a taino name. It is very agressive. I've caught a lot of then with artificial lures and is very good to eat, the flesh is very white.
And cutting the legs off a little shorter. I even cut some of mine with one a little longer than the other supposedly supposed to look better. But idk if it really makes a difference lol.
You should try a popper for the tarpon I’ve never caught one but I’m sure they’d suck it down much easier. But that was awesome should definitely make another video there!

Scott Michael braid is not very abrasion resistant. So tarpons teeth will easily cut through it. Braid to fluoro leader is good so you’re clear.
