Lol, reminds me of a time in the late 80’s! I towed my 63 nova from Huntington Beach to Santa Ana, Ca. I’m in the nova, no brakes, no motor, it’s midnight and my buddy stops at a red light(no traffic), he’s got my stereo cranked up and can’t hear anything else as I’m screaming GO GO GO………..KaBLAM right into the the back of my el camino! Luckily no damage to either of MY cars…….we still laugh at that today!
I lost it when Paul grinned and said "at 40 it smooths out, though!" lol never change, Paul.
Hahaha same here :D
Same here, cracked me up, I've been there try doing it in L.A. LOL
Paul seems like a good quality man. Omg his answer to when he will be happy the nugget is done so he can stop lying to Ed.. spoke allot to me about his character.
Why is that funny? Sound pretty typical?
Paul is an optimistic, git er done and it was easy type guy. I love it too. Eternal optimist
"But we're not on fire....we got that going for us" 😆
I like how Paul always find the positive in any situation.
At least we're not on fire ...
That's the exact same mentality my Dad raised me with 50 years ago!!!
Don't ever change!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
You guys should build a solid tow rod with an absorber in it for your next tow
Tractor and truck pullers call those "OH Shit" bars.
Most towing I've seen in the UK they use solid tow bars so only steering is required. Usually a fold up one that fits in the van, a ratchet strap holds it straight, also means the towed vehicle is only about 4' or 5' behind.
Yup, a chunk of 3" pipe and you have a great tow bar. They can tow anything with that. and, more importantly, stop it.
With the biased weight being on the end of the towed vehicle (it was w-a-y heavier than the Taco) I believe a solid tow bar would have simply pushed the little Tacoma's rear end passed it's front end when attempting to slow/ stop.
As mentioned, run a chain through a piece of pipe and you have a tow bar. 👍
Randall totally gets a pass-he was just along for the ride in that goat rodeo🤣😉
Paul missed his calling, instead of "Houston we have a problem", it would have been "you cant stop like that! and it smooths out a 40!" Classic! Reminds me of my Uncle Paul and his shop, only that was back in the 60s. Still got a smile. Thanks for letting me get away for 15 minutes!
as soon as i saw the colors on the truck i knew its was an old Bell truck, looks like it used to be what we called a digger-derrick truck, which used to dig holes and set telephone poles. it probably had a crane arm on it with a hydraulic auger and jaws to hold onto the pole, which was controlled from that seat behind the cab.👍
I love it when Mr. Paul said "If it won't start it won't run" Sound advice.
"But at least we are not on fire!"
You just gotta love Paul's optimism... 😂😁😇
My buddy and I towed his old Comet from Bountiful to Sheridan Montana, with a logging chain in the 80's. Coming off Monad Hill, I lost the brakes and started to pass him going down. The look on his face as I started to pull along was priceless.Just south of Blackfoot, a wheel bearing on his 56 Chevy pickup gave out. A guy let us use a bay, but we could not get the race off. I used some emery cloth to smooth it out. About 390 miles later we made it. Talk about sketchy!
I screamed with you Paul, "What are you doing!?"😲 I laughed the entire video!
Ol Randal was like “hey Paul, brake check”. Lol I’ve been on that ride before it’s nerve racking! Love you guys and your content
That boy ain’t playing with a full deck
I like that” we’re not on fire so we’ll keep going.” I tell myself that every day.
Omg, this may be my favorite episode! No one died!!
Randle should get more credit, he’s a funny dude 😂🤣. I was snort laughing!
This should be interesting. Can't wait to see what Paul's got planned for the old Binder.
those are good times. reminds me of my childhood. dragging an old Mopar home with my dad pulling a car home. love the videos, they take me back sometimes to some great memories.
Nice looking small block 🧐😁 you had you was holding up in the intro. That tow job was hilarious. “Well at least we’re not on fire” people can say whatever they want it takes a lot of practice to pull it off smoothly.
That's not a small block. It's the 454 that was in Landon's truck, cousin Merlin just rebuilt it and now it's gonna go in Grampa Sherm's tow truck.
It was a joke. I never miss a episode.
That was some adventure Paul! A friend and I have done something similar years ago. Towed one home from 90 miles away. We got lucky and found two identical pipes to run our log chains through to keep the towed car from running over the one pulling. Had a highway patrol cruise next to us for about 10 min. on I-40 trying to decide to pull us over then went on. Keep on making the great content, but please be safe!
Get un 8 ft or so pipe ,run a chain through it and attach to each vehicle ...vuala instant tow bar ,works phenomenal...
Paul, you are the king of sketchy tows! I love it, great job!
Michelle looking out the window "what did he drag home now?" lol The folks in town, "Yup that's the Cox boys dragging home another project". Boys and their toys. It's not fun if it's not sketchy. Loved the camera action of the look on everyone's face, lol lol. Great adventure, guys glad everyone is safe. Stay safe and GOD bless
These are the types of adventures that will stay with you for a lifetime and will be the basis of many funny stories for future generations. That was great...lol...laughed my butt off. Thanks!
Nothing like a white knuckle ride to get it home! Love it!
Next video- “fixing the spare tire carrier on the yota” lol, good times
I would definitely not let Randall tow ya ever again 🤦🏼♂️🤣
Ya know, when we were kids many moons ago we did some sketchy towing of each others cars, but never this sketchy!
Good job! ❤️
Yeah I’ve definitely done this scetchy before lol😂
@@06lbzduramax3500 me too. Good times
No guts no glory, love this video. Done this a few times myself, makes you a little nervous when you can't stop. Always made it to where I was going, and glad when I got there
Between Fab Rats, MORR, Trail Mater and Robby Layton, it's starting to feel like they have a near infinite number of projects. They make for great videos though, so a win win for us.
Brought back a bunch of good old memories watching this recovery and still chuckling!
Oh how this brings back memories of sketchy tows I made with my Dad as we drug home MoPars, Simca cars, and old trucks. At night was always a blast…
“That coulda gone worse…” When you hear that up front, you know you’re in for an adventure.
I have a feeling that radiator would have leaked anyway and you know your going to make a much cooler front bumper that one just did not hold up to a challenge grate video as always awesome new toy just like the sticker says the one with the most toys in the end is the winner 😀
Don't think I could grit my teeth or clinch my butt any more than I did for this video! When we were kids if one of us ran out of gas we would sit in the trunk and somebody would pull up behind us we could put our feet on the front bumper and push the guy down to the gas station LOL that brought back memories Thanks for the content!
You've got large cajones Paul and Randall. I'm glad nobody died! Had me holding my breath for a couple of seconds there.
Good to see Jace getting some one on one time with Dad!
Definitely needed somebody else in the tow vehicle. I know it's difficult but you got to be smarter than what you're working with. Can't wait to see this project go🤙
Kinda obvious that not much intelligent thinking went in to this mess.
At 4:30 - Paul to Jace - "OK, hold on, crank her again!" Typical Dad directions to a son if I've ever heard any. LOL
You last few uploads have been just getting or receiving stuff/vehicles. Watching Paul do work and build vehicles is much more enjoyable than just seeing him go collect a truck for restoration.
More enjoyable for you, perhaps 😁
Randall did a heck of a job! This was definitely entertaining!
That second time stopping paul looked a little upset at randal. Lol
And exactly WHOS fault it that???
Understandably….
radios would have been helpful.
Gotta love those nylon tires! You could drive 5 miles before they were round on a cold morning.
Randall was just pissed off at that big white truck for riding his bumper so he figured he would brake check him…😉🤣
Said it once, I’ll say it again, this channel is a hoot and a half!!!!!
God bless y’all!
You guys give me a good laugh. It’s nice to see other people doing sketchy stuff like my friends and I do. 😁
My had grandpa a plaque above the door in his RV that said, "He who dies with the most toys wins". He collected quite a few. I got a kick out of seeing that bumper sticker.
It's summertime bug season in the desert. A "clean windshield" is both a myth & a legend.
I loved the commentary of Paul driving with no brakes he seemed to be having fun. To me my favorite line was if we blow a tire hang on we are going for a ride. I think Paul would rather tow something with no brakes because that seems to be more fun for him. I am looking forward to what you guys are going to do with that
nicely done removal from tree though MORR will dock points for running over the towstrap love seeing old trucks come to life
except nothing came to life, more like drug out of its old age home to a grave yard where it is going to get cut up
I could hear Matt yelling " don't run over the rope"
Luckily it was a strap
So funny watching you tow the truck 🤣 when you hit Randal and your face was just perfect 😅 but I do agree with Randal that you are a but of a hoarder 🤣 did Michelle know you bought another one ❤ poor Michelle x
Well . . . now you know what you should have done. That old binder will buff out and the radiator probably needed a redo anyway. You just made some great content - that's all.
You guys are always absorbing new projects. I love it.
I've been eyeing similar trucks for a crawler hauler. Nice rig.
I love the "drag this jewel home on a tow strap" videos. It's a regular occurrence in my world too.
Something tells me that Paul has a lot more experience doing sketchy stuff than Randall does ;-)
Wow Randal, way to suddenly stop whike towing a vehicle with no brakes....good job staying positive Paul, cant say I would have been as understanding.
Oh I'm jealous on this one used to have one like it with a 6v53, compressor, welder, crane. Ran it for years untill someone stole and stripped it never found another that wasn't rotting out and I don't do sheet metal work
Take a long pipe and run a chain throw the pipe to hook to the two trucks that way the toed truck can't run into the pull truck ...
Have done this a few times myself , works GREAT. 😉
You gotta love tows like that! I towed a 1/2 ton truck that lost all power and I didn't have my receiver insert, so I had to use the safety chain mounts. One of them broke during the tow, but that's why I went through both - double security!
Glad everyone is safe, now pardon me while I take a stroll through the Randall comments....
With the manual trans, why didn't you pop start the engine??
It's always an adventure with fab rats. I tell you the smile on Paul's face every time he gets a new toy is priceless. Great video folks.
A long time ago there were some abandoned railroad tracks that made for a much shorter drive into town than the highway. Much like Paul’s “square tires” the sleepers, or railroad ties would shake out your fillings at slow speed. But, once you got up to 40 or 50 it was a real smooth ride. It was even better on my dirt bike!
Even though the towed vehicle was hurting for brakes it should have been slowing both vehicles down. In a normal situation it should be stopping both vehicles. You both know where you are going and can prepare way ahead of time with what little slowing down help you have. Live and learn
Very true but then good old Randle isn’t just slow when it comes to talking 🤣
Yeah he deft didn’t seem to know how to slow Paul down correctly. You don’t slam on brakes. Yoh slow down let him bump you and slow both trucks down.
@@Truckee18 Brandon should have been aware of how to tow (and not tow) a vehicle... No sudden stopping.
That said, It's really the one that blew it by not staying on top of the clutch and not keeping that emergency brake in his hand at all times.
I would have kept that truck in third or fourth gear and just kept the clutch in and let it out gently to slow.
@@randallsmerna384 who the hell is Brandon? You mean Joe Biden?
@@Bill-xc8le you’re mama
I don't know about towing with a strap, but with a chain, run the chain through a long piece of pipe and when the tow vehicle slows down the chain will keep the towed vehicle from hitting the tow vehicle from hitting the tow. But if course this wouldn't make a video of you damaging a vehicle then having to repair it
My thoughts exactly. That's what we used to do. And you can't really make those pipes straight again after using them a time or two. ⛓🎺Couldn't find a pipe, so I used a "coronet".
A strap works the same, just a lot smoother. 👍
However, using a pipe would mean you're either going to bend the pipe with that much weight behind it or you're going to turn the pipe into a lance.
Seems like if He had just had the transmission in third or fourth and kept the clutch in he could quickly engage it if he needed to slow.
I also would never have taken my hand off that emergency brake the whole time.
And to be quite honest I would have just had it towed because:
1) Towing it that way is illegal.
2) You put people's lives at risk. Something could have gone wrong and you could have pushed him into an intersection or pulled him off the road if things went awry with the big truck.
3) Much better time management.
4) Would have avoided having to do the repair which saves time and money. I bet that repair is going to cost WAY MORE then what a tow bill would have been...
It's the same concept behind "You only drive with an unsecured load once".
IDK, I just don't like unnecessary damage and expense.
@@randallsmerna384 The towing vehicle was going too fast. Yes, a decent towbar would be a good idea, but maybe a bigger towing vehicle too. Paul must be a very good driver though.
Paul, You need to make a spring loaded tow bar. A pipe that slides in a pipe with a couple springs set to slow the compression. A hitch on one end and chain to the frame on the towed vehicle. The towed vehicle can maneuver side to side.
Paul, one of the coolest old trucks I've seen was an early or mid 60's International 1800 with a huge horse box on the back. The interior was almost pristine, and the outside had one repair on the driver's side, but easily repaired. Unfortunately later that day the scrap yard crushed it. Two old truck collectors said that they would have bought the cab and frame without the 30' box. Some people just don't value history.
Hoping for a glimpse of the GN
I really appreciate that you weren't throwing Randall under the bus there at the end of the video. Fact of the matter was you were towing a massive truck with no brakes, could have been far far worse.
Excited to see what you end up doing with the rig!
Yea was going to say the same thing - Paul knew the risks when he decided to put 2 of his toys at risk. Personally, there is no shot I would have flat towed a big truck like that without brakes, but I guess you do what you gotta do.
Well most of us know shaking an extended elbow and clenched hand, RUUUDDDYYY!
I was fully expecting Randall to have a black eye the next morning. lol but Paul rarely gets mad at anything but slipping wrenches and stoved hands.
But, we're not on fire...
I'd be in jail for that. You guys are inspirationally hilarious. Please keep this up!
Well, Randall just finished his lesson in "who's the brakes?" when tow strapping.
The yota was the brakes unfortunately 😄 Paul was like 🙄
@@jhawk1985 it had the ability to stop itself. It just needed a more graceful slow down/stop. When you have a dead car hooked to a tow strap the rear vehicle is the one that's supposed to initiate the braking to keep the line taught and you can't brake like you would when you're by yourself since you don't have a lot of room to work with between vehicles.
@@chrisoffutt8968 I know the rear vehicle is the brakes. I have pulled cars and been pulled.
love y'all guys.. y'all are hilarious.. thanks for what y'all do..
You know if nothing else, this video was an exact parody of the FREE America 🇺🇸 I once lived in!! I would be looking at who kmows how many fines and lawsuits for doing that here in Californy!
We never gave it a second thought at one time! Thanks for the happy memories! I love you Fab Rats!
Towed home a 56 international s120 on 42 inch super swampers that hadn't been moved in 15 years smoked a 12 volt air compressor and a gas station compressor trying to air up the tires and with no power steering and only the engine for brakes 20 was about top speed good times good times
Omg this was hilarious! I could picture me doing this! Always a great adventure with you guys.
That was a scary fun ride. Glad you all made it back safely. Too bad bout the bumper, grill and radiator. Should not have stopped completely, a slow rolling stop would have been better. 🤙😎
Paul in a rig with no brakes smiling big as ever😂😂😂😂
That will be a good rig when you IRON out the problems, Randell did okay, it's not like you get to practice that sort of driving. I remember doing a tow and the tow vehicle had no brakes so the one being towed was doing the braking for both without booster pressure, bit confusing but we made it.
...oh well, bad things can happen...lol..good one, keep safe...
you guys are wild! What a tow job! Can't wait to see this old international truck running!
But it's gonna have a headache for a week!
One time going up to Alice Springs we had Bedford bus 30 seater dad made into a camper, and a Falcon 500 ,mum went around a corner in a creek then the sun was in her face as we went over the hill straight after the corner, couldn't feel the steering ended up an embankment put fan into radiator, someone pulled over so mum asked them to tell my dad in the blue bus to come back and get us, we had no tow rope so used the seat belts out of the car, there wasn't much room between the bus and car, towed back to a station, next day soldered the rad, ready for the next 700km or 500 mile, all the best to yous and your loved ones
paul has alot more patience than my dad if i stopped like that while flat towing the truck wouldn't have been the only thing smashed up lol
You guys are freaking awesome! Totally normal stuffs happening.😂
Straps run through a piece of pipe might have helped.
I could hear Trevor yelling, "Randal!" when he stomped on the brakes.
I had a smile bigger than Paul’s the whole time. Makin stories to tell the grandkids.
When you were walking up to the truck the first time, you could see where the brake fluid leaked down inside of the front tires.
Everyone is ragging on Randall for stopping to quickly but go back and watch Paul. He's looking everywhere except forward.
I get you checking the mirror from time to time, but just before Randall started slowing Paul looked at the side mirror, glanced out front, down to the key, then to the camera, then out front to see Randall had started slowing. That's on Paul.
Just finished saying the same thing elsewhere.
I would have kept tranny in third or fourth with the clutch in so that I could gently engage the clutch to slow.
Also, I would never have taken my hand off the e-brake nor my eyes off the road.
yup, totally could have hand on the e brake like his plan was the whole time
I love watching you folks work! It's almost like we are part of the team!
Hey Randall .. ‘momentum’ will keep going for a good bit … next time start slowing 1/4mile out when pulling a truck w no brakes ..
I’ve definitely been there and done that more times than I care to remember .. but - lesson learned the hard way are the ones that stick with you the longest ..
lol …
Paul - wonder why it wouldn’t. ‘Roll off’ and spin the motor over to crank it .. done that too… those old internationals are solid tanks .. it will drive thru most anything within reason ..
keep the videos coming and I’ll keep watching
My dad was always a big fan of using a 10’ length of pipe and running the tow chain through it.
A neighbor had a chain break, or something, recoil caused the pipe to bounce up on the trucks hood, pipe went through the windshield.
@@jlsage4059 yeah, I’m not saying it’s a safe way. It’s just the way he always did it.
Is Randall clear on the basic concepts of towing like this? The first bump was difficult to understand, but that last one was just an amazing lack of awareness.
Can’t blame him though. The rear vehicle should have been the brakes. Randall did just fine for what they had. I wouldn’t even be mad about it because that’s the risk you take and Paul knew that
Couldn't wait to get back to the shop to carry out some modifications...'He Who Has The Most Toys Wins'
This reminded me of when I used my 79 Bronco to pull my dad’s 5 ton wood chip truck about 20 miles on back roads. We pulled this adventure at 2300 to avoid state troopers and sheriff deputies. Ended up blowing out the front driveline and burned up the brakes on the Bronco because dad lost his brakes coming down the last little hill before the turn for the property. I basically had to stop a dead 5 ton truck with the spare tire and rack. Good times.
You should of just got it running and drove it…. But I know you guys like doing things the hard way 🤣
without breaks we always use to tow with an old driveshaft instead of a strap
Cool idea!
You will have to explain to Randall the basics of towing someone. He should have been watching then he stopped and pulled out so the impact wouldn't have been so bad. Glad no one got hurt and its home at Fab Rats.
We flat towed a old box truck with air ride seats and cab over that wouldn't lock down though it was going to put me face first on the road and the crazy old guy that was pulling it with his pulp wood truck was hammer down ! Lol the tires were way worse but we didn't die did crash it into the 350 crawler it didn't move at all lol good times from Va back woods and we don't have much flat ground .👣
Excellent job guys.....now that's a carbon copy situation we've all been in ....only if your a motor-head....great footage and editing !!
