    I love it so much when Devs actually care about their game. Hugo is the freakin' Creative Director of this game, and based on the way he's talking about Doom it is SO obvious that he's played through the game himself, most likely multiple times, and he absolutely loves it. There are tons of games out there that I find myself asking "Did they even play their own game?"

      It's hilarious to me how John Romero is so well-known for his playful 'trash talk', and id Software popularized the idea of a video game itself trash talking you (mocking and taunting you when you want to quit the game), yet everyone was furious about that Daikatana ad.
      How people took that seriously and got offended/put off by that, knowing full-well that Romero is a notorious playful trash talker, is just ridiculous.
      People are always so desperate to be angry about something. It's so weird.

      He is. Hugo is one of the very best in the gaming industry at what he does. Because to him it's all about having FUN. And his references to Robocop is precisely WHY DOOM and DOOM Eternal just WORKS. The Original DOOM was also based things the devs had FUN with: Games -- D&D in particular --, films such as Aliens, Darkness of Evil; Thrash Metal Music, etc. Pizza and soda, and lods of FUN hammering away on the keyboard, blowing up hords of demons.

    Hugo really learned from John Romero. That's almost EXACTLY what John said about E1M1: it was the last level they created. It was going to set the tone for the game, and it had to be one of the best things the player would see. It had to capture the player's attention from the get-go.

    After the disappointment that was RAGE, I had kind of written id Software off, and even more so after hearing about all the old-school members leaving. When the rumblings about the new DOOM were happening online, I rolled my eyes and assumed the worst.
    Not only has the game completely proven me wrong, but these interviews have given a lot of insight into a team that shows it still has that essence. Once again, I'm actually looking forward to new stuff from id Software, like how I used to when I was 13.

If you could use a breather or just want to hunt down secrets/stories/collectibles, they're waiting for you, too. The core gameplay loop being "killing demons" *might* have seemed repetitive to some players if they didn't indulge in the accompanying exploration/lore/achievement hunting.

They admit to REALLY liking the Doom on Earth idea but they were all very honest with each other admitting that no matter how good it may have been, it didn't have the "spirit" of DOOM. Thus, years later we have DOOM 2016 and it fucking blows everything else out of the competition.

    A follow up project to show the evolution to Doom Eternal will definitely be really interesting.

    Man when hugo started talking about the rules of the game around 23 minutes in, I was so happy to hear that mindset, I love openworld games as much as the next guy, But it always has a chance of feeling way to open in terms of how to play to me and it can kind of ruin an experience, you might start playing in a way that isn't to fun for certain parts, where as in a game where he developers know exactly what your going to be doing, It can become this super fun game. Idk how to fully explain it, and hugo did a better job anyway.
    I just love to hear that they thought about the mechanics that way

      Nicholas Schrock No, Miyazaki talks about how they weren't trying to make a hard game. It was never the intent.

    • @N0D1RECT1ON
      @N0D1RECT1ON 7 лет назад +18

      I'm guessing by his choice of words "unique focus on difficulty" he's referring to Miyazaki's actually intent to create something challenging but fair with the point of it being that you're victories felt earned rather than it being handed to you.

    • @M1ndblast
      @M1ndblast 7 лет назад +3

      Nicholas Schrock that's a massive leap of logic you're making there, they didn't say that.
      The difficulty is there but it's not mystical or fully unique or so hard you need to be pro mlg just to beat it. That's just the player reports/reviews hyped and distorted.

    • @samr7542
      @samr7542 7 лет назад +13

      Guys, for fuck's sake, semantics. Put your giant e-peens away for a second. Dark Souls is generally more difficult and impenetrable than most games, what with not giving the player many directions, not hand-holding like most AAA modern games, etc. That's unique in the modern big budget game landscape (add to that its unique multiplayer component and its huge unexpected success in the West).
      But regardless of its difficulty, you don't think Dark Souls is simply interesting enough in its own right to want a good doc about it? Gimme a break.

Of all the disappoint I've had with various franchises lately (movies and games), Doom 2016 has been a shining example of when a group of people making a piece of entertainment "get it".
