- 'The Old Fashioned Way' is an original SudburyTV program that celebrates modern people who use archaic tools and techniques. This episode follows teams of oxen and horses that log conservation land in Sterling, MA in order to minimally impact the environment. The logs are then taken to a hundred year old sawmill where they are sawn into boards.
Oh Yeah! This channel is great. His mill is almost as old as my Home Comfort (1917) wood cook stove. Ya gotta love the old stuff. No batteries, or micro chips, or plastic just a piece of equipment that works every time
Tears ago you could find wooden nickels at the Sudbury general store, that Mr. Swanson owned, on Rt. 20 by the Sudbury/Marlboro town line.
Great to see draft animals in the forest. But there is a better way to harness oxen: Instead of the cumbersome ancient yoke there is the three piece ma-friely German cattle harness, portrayed in the Small Farmer's Journal in the 1990s.
Perhaps, but most folks practicing serious logging with oxen question the durability to withstand the stress of the work involved. The New England style yoke evolved in the working conditions applied. It is durable, inexpensive, easy to build, and comfortable for animals.
@@TMHarrigan I meant to write "animal-friendly". Studies by Bavarian agricultural scientists say, that the three piece leather harness including a cattle collar enables the animals to pull bigger loads over longer distances . For one thing, there is no chafing involved. Wooden yokes , of course, are cheaper, but cumbersome
Mr. Karbaumer I think i read about you on an article of rural heritage.
Yes, that's right , years ago.@@juanjaimes1836
I hope I will find a time suitable to view this, but the quiet evenings are not it, because 'yall are yelling over (and without) music.
