Story behind the song:
Ask any cellist. They'll tell you about what's it's like to play the cello part of Pachelbel's Canon in D. It's the same 8 notes over and over and over again. The good news is, it's easy to memorize. The bad news is you don't know when to stop. There's a rumor floating around that says Pachelbel either died while writing it, never finishing the cello part or that he dated a cellist and it did NOT go well. This arrangement is dedicated to all the cellists that have fallen asleep while playing this song...or at least wanted to fall asleep. Steven Sharp Nelson actually began writing this arrangement while bored at a wedding.
Ahem...all the bitter cello-malice aside, Pachelbel's Canon in D (written in the 1600's) has stood the test of time -- celebrated as the most recognizable piece of classical music. We like to call it the "one-hit wonder of the 1600's." It really is an amazingly catchy piece of music. It demonstrates the musical form of the "canon," when a melody is played and then repeated in a round by other voices. (watch how the melodies are passed from one cello to the next - right to left)
ALL THE SOUNDS YOU HEAR WERE CREATED BY THE CELLO -- bowing, plucking, strumming, and beating the cello any way possible.
This arrangement was written before ThePianoGuys posted our first video, "Michael Meets Mozart" - but we hesitated to film it because of how involved the idea was. We've never used "extras" before! So we put it off. And put it off. And then put if off some more. One day Al van der Beek was skimming through our thousands of messages on Facebook and happened to see one with the title "wedding" in the subject line. A woman emailed us about an opportunity to film at a big magazine spread wedding photo shoot. It was perfect--they would have the location, flowers, actors, and even a cake. Everything we'd need. To make a long story short, we excitedly scheduled our video shoot for the same day as their photo shoot, but a few days prior to the day it fell apart. After much discussion, we determined to move forward on faith that we could still work it out. Paul Anderson marshaled all sorts of connections and called on whomever he could and by nothing short of a miracle in a matter of days the wedding was all planned -- complete with a beautiful location, stunning decor, sharp tuxedos, fancy flowers, a photogenic bride and groom, 60 energetic guests, and an iced cake!
The piece at the beginning that is just ending is Steven Sharp Nelson's 4-cello arrangement of "Thanks Be To Thee" (att. to Handel). Download the full MP3 here: thepianoguys.c... (TRACK 7 on the album "Tender Mercies")
Thanks to our many "cameos" we're reluctantly-proud to admit that this is the first video where you can SEE ALL FIVE PIANO GUYS! Everyone appeared as themselves, except for Jon who got a little carried away with his characters. :)
A HUGE thank you goes out to our vendors that made this wedding look so amazing. Please visit their sites and use them if you're planning a wedding!

I got married to your version of Canon. It was perfect, thank you very much.
As a cellist who has played that same boring 8 note Pachalebel Canon part at a hundred weddings, I REALLY appreciate this! Awesome.
Mike Hughes ruclips.net/video/Ptk_1Dc2iPY/видео.html
Stop playing the same... improvise. Use this as an example.
@@enocec83 And go against the face of tradition?! *gasps and faints*
@@chetanaik, why not?

I love how happy he is when he plays the cello!!
Have you seen him play the Turtles "So happy together"? it's adorable.
can not agree with you more
Bride "who's going to play music for our wedding?"
Groom "Steven, Steven, Steven, and Steven."
You're getting married to both a husband and a wife in the future? Interesting.
Steven and the Stevens.
Maybe "bride" and "groom".
Ill edit it, but i posted this 3 years ago bruh
Steven to the fourth power
I'd totally have this version at my wedding!
Now I just need to find someone willing to marry me...
+Catkeeper I have plenty men/woman for ya. XD
+Ebon Evergaze are u a slave owner or something?
+Catkeeper i agree.. waiting for someone willing to marry me too... lol
+Avisha Rampersad 2016 seems like a good year for a wedding. If you're not doing anything, come with me and we'll find an aisle to traipse!
Lol.. Bill Casti people keep saying that about 2016... Am I missing something?!? Lol
Pachalbel was a genius. He wrote a beautiful part for the violins, he wrote a beautiful part for the piano, and when he got to the cellos he wrote down eight perfect notes...and died. XD
Wasn't written for piano...Sorry to be "that guy", but I'm gonna be a real jerk and get technical for a minute (and hope I'm not wrong xD). So, Johann Pachelbel was a Baroque composer - firstly, the piano didn't exist, so he would have written for harpsichord (like Bach). However, his "Canon in D" was written for three violins and what's called a "Basso continuo" - a very repetitive line for either a cello or double bass to support the melody played on other instruments. To summarise, Pachelbel's canon was never intended to be fun for the celloist or put him in the spotlight, and no harpsichord (let alone piano) part was written specifically for it. Thanks for hearing me out :)
Lmao
I really hate cannon in d

I love this! XD XD XD
u made my day!!!
XD
I found the piano guy at 3:03 wearing make-up 🤣
yup dancing as well
I really like this version. It doesn’t slaughter the beauty of Pachebel’s Canon.
What these guys are doing for classical music is just magical. They've broadened its appeal and brought it to a much more diverse audience. These guys love what they do and want to share their enjoyment with the whole world. BRAVO!!
Those guys are the same person doing all 4 parts.
David Ivey no its quadruplets
David Ivey It's actually two guys, one who does the cello parts and one who does piano. They sometimes have other musicians play various parts for them, as well. In this video, it is indeed the cellist playing all the string parts, with the tracks overdubbed and his multiple images edited in. The piano player is in drag, hidden as a member of the wedding party. He loses his wig and reveals his true identity toward the end of the clip!
Exactly!
Well said, sir.
Steve's face sometimes looks like Mr bean

Oh my goodness, I saw that too!!!!
The one where Bean is at church, trying to get a candy unwrapped quietly.
😂😂😂
That one is soo funny!
No
I know right!
Weird thought: if a blind person every asks me to describe the colour orange, I would let them listen to this video. It's got energetic and zesty tones I love it!
I remember how much I love music not only when I listen but watch you guys too
All weddings should be like this
Yes lol
Agreed
Patrick Smith This is gonna be what they play at the reception to my wedding!!!!!
Patrick Smith 90th like
The only version of Pachelbel's Canon that cello players are wiling to play.
Leigh Robertson haha. When I had to play this, I convinced my conductor to let me pluck my cello and do a rhythm rather then the sleep inducing version.
Having been married to a very fine cellist for 43 years, I can attest to the truthfulness of your comment...
Everyone thinks it sounds good, we just hate the very existence of such a beautifully torturous piece.
It was one of the first things that I had to play in an orchestra. I was about twelve and I still have PTSD twenty years later.
I love how Jon was the old lady and the minister!!!
Musicians...great musicians... with a sense of humour - what a treat! Well done!
You just watch twoset violin, and you’ll see a great sense of humor XD lol 😂 but yeah I love the pianoguys
I've played this piece at request so many times I understand falling asleep within the grounded bass repetitions! Love their interpretation of a 1600's chord progression.
even my son, four years old, is dancing with this song!!!! brilliant!!!
U sure ur a mom that watches RUclips I thought they watch tiktok
The video is a little bit goofy, but the music itself is amazing. This is by far the best rendition of Pachelbel's Canon I've heard.
A good one, yes.
But i prefer the LAGQ's one ;)
+Elisha Kim
I'm not... The original is good, I just like this version even more.
Elisha Kim It is rare enough to notice when it's not so bad
As a pianist I never knew how boring the cello part was because I always play the boring and pretty part. This goes to show the creativity you can take when you improvise!
The editing on these movies seriously blows my mind. Perfection!
yeah. at first i thought they were twins and had the same haircut.
Perfecto!
Agreed! So jazzy! The energetic effort appears effortless and therein lies the beauty of it!
OPTIBOSS i know right!! it looks so good!!!!

as a celliest i say playing 8 notes over and over is boring so instead of the origanal i want THIS played at wedding!
You can tell Pachelbel to go to hell! The Piano Guys have far more talent than him!
SOOO TRUEEEE!!! I play the cello, and one of the most boring times in the orchestra was playing this song. I was like, 'uh, where do we stop? here?' the whole time
Dang dude
I’m also a cellist, and I find this hilarious, yet I also have wonder which took longer to make, this comment, or Steve’s video
That is one of the best songs I have ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And when they all got home, they realized that no one had actually been married.
Bruh
I guess they got some money. That's what actors usually get. Might be even better.
This is year old comment why are people commenting
@@breeze173 because why not
Lol
I love how even in the fun version somebody still has to play the boring part
Lol!🤣🤣🤣🤣
How true, but
So funny!!!
0:57, that awkward moment when half asleep steven plays better than you ever will ):
Daniel Liu 😂
YUp!!!
Daniel Liu p
Yup --- I agree with You ... I wouldn't know HOW to play a musical instrument even when I'm awake.. So What's Your Point??
M
John as an old lady is priceless! :)
Cellist crowdsurfing!!! Awesome!
Not only is Mr. Nelson an ace cellist, but he can clone himself as well! I'm sure it made this smart and upbeat arrangement easier to compose.
no one can make a cello so fun like the piano guys can🎻🎻🎻🎻
Check out 2CELLOS and then do the judging
+Lwena Lauder facts
+Lwena Lauder eh piano guys are cooler in our opinion :D
+Bessita _ That is not fun... but kind of insane..
true
Even when he was pretending to be off key when he drifted off to sleep at 0:56 sounded like a cool beat.
I love Pachebel's Canon in D, and it's even lovelier as the piano guys play it.😍
i wish i could hire them for my wedding in the future
Clorox Bleach If you could even get married or laid with that stupid ass cliché name
as if that's his/her real name duh!
Clorox Bleach omg I see u everywhere
I love this! Jon in a dress was the BEST
John dressed up as a grandma kills me. I remember when I first watched this and I didn't realize it was him until the wig flew off
Dude... I'm speechless!! What a wonderful, marvelous version of the most beautiful classic song of all time!!!
They all look like they're having a blast!
The wonders of acting.
theimprobableone
I don't think they even have to with that upbeat tune
Arun Allen 🦄🐮🐮🦄
Honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of this song until I saw him perform it in concert. Oh my goodness, that man is hilarious live. (They both are.)
I have never seen anybody jam so hard to a cello before.....nice! XD
It's not that uncommon, actually.
Ethan Perez oh really? well next time I hear a cello I will definitely dance to it then!! XD
+Rinnay Shinimi (Rin) you should listen to 2Cellos, they have lots of rock stuff :D
Ethan Perez oh really!? I do like stuff like that so maybe I will ^o^
me !
As a violinist, I adore this song. But for all my cellist friends, I’ll refrain from having it played at my wedding😂
Same tho but i am a pianist
what if they ask you play solo?not those 8 notes, will you accept their invitation
Your cello friends will thank you.
As a pianist and violinist, I enjoy playing the same material over and over😅😅😅
LOL IS THAT JON DRESSED UP AS AN OLD LADY?
ive never seen him as old lady since 3 years ago

This is my favorite classical piece. Love the twist!!!
saw them in Chicago last night - hilarious when they play this. worth the price of admission alone!!!!!!! cannot wait to see them again
Lucky
How did they play this live?
I’m a cellist, and once, I played canon in D. I literally fell asleep. I loved this.
You can see Paul, Jon, Al and of course, Steve.
Great job guys! I've bought it!
One of my favorites. So much fun.
Here's an idea. What if you guys do a cello based rendition of Dueling Banjos?
TalonsCrow that would be awesome!!!!!!!!
No crickets were harmed in the making of this video.
Phew, thank god.
Lol
My friends call me Jiminy Cricket
That was the best part! 😂

When there's a rainbow of a song bursting to come out of you but the whole world just wants it in black and white.
2024. Still love this video
This is one of my favorites...I've been playing the piano for ten years now and these guys and their work have been an inspiration from the start :)
I've watched this a lot of times and I just realized that the four guys are all the same 😂
+Jedi Santos lol
+Jedi Santos i thought why do they all look like Steven Nelson im like wtf
Snipe Camp look like? they are the same, lol
😂I noticed at the end😂
+Jedi Santos Wow you must not have watched very many TPG vids.
We had this at our wedding, oh, so wish we had this arrangement. love it!
I watched this live at their concert, was really funny the way he performed it 🤣
So cool 😎🎶! I would LOVE it if this happened at my wedding 💍.
Still one of my all time favorite videos! Never fails to cheer me up.
In any way when my listen this song , that make me feel better ..even if mood badly.
MUSIC can cure the people heartSss.
It's taken me coming back over this a few times to see that Steven does a FANTASTIC job at pretend falling asleep while playing perfectly. Most impressive.
somebody understands my pain - but I seriously need 4 Steves at my wedding in 10 years or so
9 years now
8 years
let me remind you. 8 more years
7 more years now. Time is getting close.
7 years now
So relatable for this piece I play cello and this is so true! Sometimes you get some fun solos, but most times you're playing a bass part. At least in the songs I've played. Maybe that's why I like the PianoGuys so much, because the cello is the melody A LOT of the time. #celloprobs
This may be the most legitimately awesome thing I have ever seen.
This is so beautiful to walk down the aisle to a different beat.Everybody had a good time.
Very creatively done well done. Genius and brilliant
There is a reason why Canon in D is a cellist's worst nightmare. XD
+Gamer Ella - Minecraft no my teacher was complimented for playing without sheet music. "oh my u memorized it".
+Gamer Ella - Minecraft lol its legit 6 notes repeated in the same order like 434545645674234653467 times so you pretty much just fall asleep
+Prateek Khandelwal I've actually fallen asleep while playing the bass line before, apparently I kept playing while I was asleep and didn't miss a beat. I guess it's quite literally THAT EASY!
Well the cellists are actually used as the metronome, so if they screw up the whole tempo crashes, BUT it is extremely boring to play
Or the violinist who has to fill in when the cellist in your ensemble doesn't get the times right.... :/
Love this upbeat arrangement Guys !
Bravo! Instead of crying, I'm dancing! ❤
What an amazing video clip and so cleverly done. Steven x 4 & Jon in crowd to an inspiring version of Pachelbel's Canon in D. Whatever these guys turn to they make it amazing. love there music, love there style. they always inspire me and lift me up. keep the awesome music coming Piano Guys - You bless us all
Hi! This arrangement you made to the canon is impressive, many congratulations
i love rock canon
I think this version is so much a better fit for a wedding, not slow and solemn but vibrant and full of life.
1:51 - 1:52
The best dancing ever of 2015
*2012 lol
I never realised how boring the cello part was until this reinvention
My wife is a very fine cellist, and I've heard for many of the 43 years of our marriage that it's horribly boring. As an oboist, I'm happy to say almost no parts for my instrument were ever boring... And no, the oboe isn't the tall wooden bedpost instrument. That's the bassoon. It's also a double-reed instrument, so is also an awesome addition, but the oboe is smaller than a clarinet, though not by much, and sounds great, if played well.
The cellos have the bass part or the accompanyment (sorry I’m not good with spelling) and the violins have the main melody.
If you want a chuckle about the boring cello part, look up Rob Paravonian's "Pachelbel Rant" about how the piece has followed him ever since he was forced to learn it in the school orchestra...
You make me sad.
@@KLP99 played bassoon, oboe, clarinet - enjoyed bassoon the most :D
I will not deny that this is a beautiful piece of music, but if you play the cello.... Let's just say this becomes one of your worst nightmares. I'm glad that TPG can make this something I would be looking forward to playing! 😊
I particularly liked the little grey haired old lady- whoever she is!!!
1:39 dannng what a fancy shirt for the wedding!
Ahhh this brings back memories
Anyone still here?? 2019??
YESSSSSS!!!!
I’m new

Right! :)
You are a gem among loose shale. Truly amazing. Ty
Beautiful and creative :D
(And lol John in that grandmother's costume XD)
Geez now I have a strange surge to learn the cello O-o...
Start with violin or viola because is would be easier mad if you do viola, it's the same thing as cello but the notes are one lower on the staff. And instead of three fingers it's four and your second and third finger are basically the second finger on viola.......... I have a viola and cello
+Paperphoenix TFM My sentiments exactly!! :D
+Paperphoenix TFM i started playing cello write from the start it's much easier than you think if you just cut out enough time time practice effectively, and no i didn't start playing cello at age 8 or something I started when i was 17, and i play, as people have critiqued, decently well. :)
+unia linda LOL if the man wants to learn cello you don't beat around the bush with viola, you start learning base clef.
I took piano lessons since preschool. So, I won't have problems reading notes :D
this is totally going to be my wedding
I am surprised that somebody actually liked my comment (other than me). shocking!
i wish

I'll be happy to be the one playing this music on the violin. XD
What a Marvellous video!!! Wonderful!
What a wonderful music, and an amazing execution!
That awkward moment when you realize they are all the same person halfway through the video ...

If mr Bean (Rowan atkinson) was a cello player. This would be him. xD
Ben Pocklington hahaha. True.
Would have been nice if Mr. Bean attended the wedding as well. haha.
I actually thought it was him at first glance playing cello. Lol
Leo Leo Wong
ooooh I can see that.
I can also imagine him dancing down the aisle with everyone else. :)
Hahaha
Ben Pocklington Dude that is so weird, but true lol xD
Can the guests be any more vanilla with their dancing? Lol.
