I’m deeply touched by Mr. Santamaría’s solo. My father Guy made sure we paid attention. We had all his recordings with Tito Puente, Cal Tjader and on his own. It’s not just the authenticity (for I enjoy Giovanni Hidalgo and Tata Güines too). But when Mr. Santamaría plays I feel I’m in the presence of God. Whoever he is. It’s religious. By the time I saw him live at the Blue Note, NYC in 1984 he was past his prime and his musicians looked worried. He still brought me to tears and I treasure the memory.
Aside from Andy Gonzalez on bass, the incredible Barry Rogers on trombone, Ignacio Berroa on drums, Bobby Porcelli on sax, Bob Quaranta on piano. VIVA MONGO!
answering 3 years later: He plays the first generation Meinl Woodcrafts from the middle of 1980s. 28" tall Bavarian Oak drums made in Germany for Meinl by small company manufacturing barrels: Fassfabrik Mueller.
Inmortal, Ramón Santamaría!!!

This is the best played & arranged version of this song ever recorded IMO - despite the poor video/audio quality.
