Being brought up non-prejudice, I met a Latin man, neighbor Who turned to Mongo Santa Maria, a master artist from a distant time and country hearing his music was a gift. Remember this if you’re prejudice you lose
"Afro Blue" is a jazz standard composed by Mongo Santamaría. Mongo Santamaria recorded his composition "Afro Blue" in 1959 when playing with the Cal Tjader Sextet. The first recorded performance was on April 20, 1959, at the Sunset Auditorium in Carmel, California, with Santamaría on percussion.
"Mongo Santamaria" (April 7, 1917 - February 1, 2003) was a Cuban percussionist and bandleader who spent most of his career in the United States. Primarily a conga drummer, Santamaría was a leading figure in the pachanga and boogaloo dance crazes of the 1960s. His biggest hit was his rendition of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man", which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. Also "Afro Blue." From the 1970s, he recorded mainly salsa and Latin jazz, before retiring in the late 1990s. He passed away in Miami due to a heart attack at the age of 86.

Bernadine Wiggins ...*conga (conga drummer).
Hubert Laws' s solo flute is doing justice to this rendition.....
Correction, you are hearing the Piccolo
The piccolo solo by Hubert Laws is excellent... His brother Ronnie Laws made some ass kicking music too.
9cc The unmistakable Hubert Laws ever since then❤
I have to revisit my piccolo, I certainly have to❤

Actually it's a piccolo but yes, absolutely amazing. And that sustained note is otherworldly.
Hubert Laws is playing a Piccolo.

One minute of this contains more music than any 10 rap/hip-hop songs COMBINED!
Excelente ejecucion
Fantastico Uffffff
Had lunch with my idol Mongo a month before I was shipped off to Vietnam in "67".

¿alguien sabe si la armonia del minuto 1:32 al 2:01, es original de elllos? Misma armonia puede esucharla en Universal Mind de The Doors. (min 2:22) ruclips.net/video/yWkOXyQMCfI/видео.html
Parece ser que fue al revés! The Doors copiaron esa parte del solo en Universal Mind
Obviamente la original es la de Mongo, la canción de The Doors pasó tiempo después.
Is it just me, or does that picolo come in playing off-key? seems off-key a lot in this cut. Otherwise this cut is a classic.
This isn't the original studio recording. This was Live at the Village Gate, NYC, NY - March 1967.
russhamer ...It's you.
@@brucescott4261 hahaha....where are my cutips!!!
Off key are not no disrespect to the commenter and all time Classic
@@sammiebouldin1267 it is off-key. and i mean no disrespect. this is classic and mongo conributed so much to this rich musical tradition
too repetitive conga patterns to earn “explosion”…..someday, listen to Santana “Future Primitive” about middle of piece….congas break away from pattern repetition and come from nature.
