I discovered this a few years ago while driving a limo. It always played on WXFM when I was parked at the same place. Every time Ihe I heard it I had to get out of the car and start dancing on the sidewalk!

Fantastic Ensemble..... Herbie Hancock , Ken Dorham such a sweet sound in its purist form. Great Jazz compositions like this always tell a story about the ups and downs of life . That's what I get about this piece of music.....
What I loved about Kenny Durham even though he was sick in the hospital he checked his self out and went to see MY Lee Morgan what a faithful n loving man. R I P. Kenny n Lee
I rate him as up there with Lee Morgan. I rate others too as performers or composers but these two did both writing New music, New sounds.... OK I might invite Donald Byrd to make it three... or not... perhaps not so original??
I was all over Miles. Then one day my teacher call me and Said WAIT WAIT !!! An gave me some Kenny Dorham tunes. Since then I am a diehard Dorham fan .
this song is just so sweet, it goes right through my skin. It simultaneously grounds me inside myself while transporting me to a far time and place. I can never get enough of it.
Five Thousand Stars!!!!!!!!! This is one of the baddest Blue Note LPs in the entire catalog! This is always as fresh as the first time I heard this masterpiece by K.D. Kenny Dorham was not only one of the finest trumpet stylists of all time, but also an incredible composer. He was truly underrated as a trumpeter but he's one of my top 10 favorite jazz composers along with Monk, Horace Silver, Strayhorn, Ellington, Bill Lee and others. Yes, that's a young Herbie Hancock along with some of the baddest Joe Henderson every recorded and an even younger (only 17 yrs old) Tony Williams along with Butch Warren. Honestly, Tony is playing his best on this record. He never played better than on this, his very first ever recording date!! K.D. knew how to put a band together to put his music forward in the best way possible. I transcribed Joe's entire tenor sax solo and my transcription was published in DownBeat magazine some years ago.
HERE IT IS!!! This takes me back to my shack in Waikiki many years ago when I was on the radio over there. All that sweet Hawaiian uke music needed some counterpart and this and SIDEWINDER did it for me. Thanks for this post.
I was wandering who was on the piano because of that funky piano at the start and at 13:15. Herbie! It always brings a smile to find out it is someone great in his early years.
Same! His comping becomes increasingly more compelling throughout KDs solo, and then he brings it allllll the way back down for the sax solo. Then there’s a section in the sax solo where he’s trading 4 bars of chordal accompaniment with himself in two different registers. Then he takes a fantastic solo of his own!
NK, you are over-qualified for this job, thankfully! It almost brings tears to my eyes that this is real music (jazz) in its purest form, and these musicians(!!!!!!!!) played with each other. Thank you for bringing it real. Please do continue.
I particularly enjoy Joe Henderson's solo on that great track : it is all at once laid-back and adventurous, soulful and playful ! Would it be crazy to recognize at the beginning of it what will be the theme/bass line for Coltrane's "Acknowledgment" ("A Love Supreme" was issued a year later...) ?
Miles Said It The Drummer Is Time Keeper He Lite The Fire , This Cookin At Its Best A Prodigy And A Teen When This Session Was Recorded ; Incendentially Herbie Hancock Is Lone Survivor Of This Session !
After hearing Roy Hargrove's superb version of Una Mas on Habana with Chucho Valdes, I had to go back to the source 🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺. One of the best fusions of Hardbop and Latin rhythms.

Truly a talented musician worthy of greater recognition.
First time I heard of this was with Roy Hargrove and Crisol, they were on fire. Their version I believe is called Uno Mas
classic jazz, love it.
I love Butch Warren's playing on this.
The tastiest minimalism! 🎶

I'm just discovering kenny dorham and he is a true master of the saxophone and he can run scales with rapadness..... Arthur Tillman
just fyi, Kenny was a trumpet player.
Classic stuff man on G O D
Thank you Nikos. Just what the Dr ordered.
Una Mas!!
it killed me to find out herbie was only 19 yeahs old ...playing along side these OLD DUDES !?!?
Herbie was 22. Tony was 17. Joe Henderson was 25/26. Warren was 24, so it was the old dude Kenny playing with young cats. Get ur facts correct!

Dorham some say better than Miles. Like this track, fantasic personnel also.
ken braxton same level

I think it's just that Dorham is so underrated.
